I asked Grok AI on X a question: Is mpox clade 1b under control?

As of the latest available information, mpox clade 1b is not entirely under control, and there are signs of continued spread and challenges in managing outbreaks:

  • Spread Beyond Africa: Clade 1b has been detected in countries outside of Africa, including Sweden, Thailand, Germany, and the United Kingdom, indicating international spread. This suggests that containment within Africa is not fully effective, and the virus is capable of crossing borders through travel.

  • Ongoing Outbreaks: In Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, clade 1b cases have significantly increased since late 2023, with over 20,000 cases reported in 2024 across 13 African Union Member States. The geographical expansion within Africa, including into countries like Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, shows ongoing transmission issues.

    1734228942799.jpg
  • Public Health Concerns: The World Health Organization has noted the spread of clade 1b as a concern, with the virus showing potential for more severe symptoms and higher mortality rates compared to other clades. The situation in the DRC has led to a declaration of a public health emergency of international concern.

    1734228942863.jpg
  • Control Measures: While some countries have control measures in place, like enhanced surveillance and vaccination efforts, the rapid spread and the nature of clade 1b suggest these measures are still catching up. For instance, the UK has confirmed cases but maintains that the risk to the general population remains low, indicating ongoing vigilance rather than complete control.

  • Transmission Concerns: The virus's ability to spread through close contact, including sexual transmission, adds complexity to control efforts, especially in areas with limited healthcare infrastructure or where sexual health services might not be robustly integrated into broader public health responses.

In summary, while public health measures are in place and being enhanced, mpox clade 1b is not under full control globally. The situation requires continued monitoring, improved healthcare responses, and possibly international cooperation to manage and mitigate its spread effectively.

Four New Cases of Mpox Clade 1b Found in Germany, Forcing School to Close
Nikhil Prasad Fact checked by:Thailand Medical News Team
Dec 17, 2024

Authorities in Germany have reported four cases of the new Clade 1b variant of the Mpox (Monkeypox) virus. The infections were confirmed in a family residing in the western German town of Rösrath, located near Cologne. Among those affected are two school-age children who attend a special needs school in the area. Health officials believe the initial infection occurred after one family member returned from a trip to Africa, where the virus is more prevalent. The virus was then passed on to other members of the family.

To prevent further spread, the entire family has been placed under strict quarantine. Health authorities acted swiftly to inform anyone who may have come into contact with the infected individuals, including school staff and classmates of the children. While no further infections have been reported, cautionary measures remain in place to protect public health.

School Closed as Precautionary Measure
The special needs school attended by the two infected children has been temporarily closed. Lessons will continue through online distance learning until the end of the week.

Officials from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's leading health authority, have worked closely with local health agencies and school administrators to ensure the safety of students and staff.

“This decision is purely precautionary,” a spokesperson for the RKI explained. “The Mpox virus is not highly contagious under normal circumstances, but we want to take every step to minimize any potential risk.” The school’s closure has been met with understanding from parents, who support the move to protect their children.

This Medical News report highlights how authorities are being vigilant while keeping the public informed. Families with students attending the school have been urged to monitor for symptoms, which include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, muscle pain, and skin rashes.

What is the Clade 1b Variant of Mpox?
The Clade 1b variant of Mpox has raised concerns among global health experts due to its emergence outside of Africa. Previously, the virus was largely confined to regions in West and Central Africa, where rodents act as natural hosts. The virus occasionally jumped to humans, often through close contact with infected animals.

The current infections mark the first notable cases of the Clade 1b variant in Germany since October. The first confirmed case involved a 33-year-old man who likely contracted the virus during his travels in East Africa. Unlike other Mpox strains, the Clade 1b variant appears to have a slightly higher risk of spreading, prompting international concern.

However, health authorities emphasize that Mpox is not as easily transmissible as other viral infections like COVID-19. “Close physical contact, suc h as skin-to-skin interactions, is usually required for Mpox transmission,” said the RKI in an official statement. Activities such as hugging, kissing, or other intimate contact pose the highest risk for infection.

Global Response
In August, Mpox was declared “a public health emergency of international concern” due to its increased spread in parts of Africa and sporadic cases in other continents. This declaration aimed at encouraging governments to take proactive steps to contain outbreaks and prevent further infections.

The international Mpox outbreak since 2022 has primarily been linked to a different strain, Clade 2b, which spread rapidly in Europe and North America. This new Clade 1b variant now represents a growing challenge for global health authorities as they attempt to track and contain its spread outside its usual regions.

Conclusion
The detection of the Mpox Clade 1b variant in Germany highlights the need for continued vigilance, particularly as global travel resumes. While the virus remains relatively rare and not easily transmissible, its emergence in Europe underscores the importance of quick action and public awareness. Health officials have acted responsibly by isolating affected individuals and informing potential contacts, minimizing the risk of further infections.

For now, the situation remains under control, with no severe cases reported. Germany’s health authorities, including the RKI, continue to monitor the situation closely and implement safety protocols as needed. The temporary closure of the school demonstrates a commitment to ensuring public health safety, especially for vulnerable groups such as children in special education settings.

Bumping up this older thread for relevance…mpox Clade 1 has been found in NYC. This is real bad news if this spreads.
You can read some previous posts on this thread for how BAD, clade 1 is….death rate is no joke and far more serious than the mpox that rampantly spread a couple of years ago.

World Cup

1.2 million international visitors to the event. From all over….

And lookey here! The special exercise in advance of the World Cup just in time for the first case of Clade 1 to be found. They named it “Tranquil Passport”….catchy!

In NYC.

Weird! ( )

Looks like the games will start in June. I need to add this info to my long-term planner.
Thanks for the heads up!
You’re welcome!
Mind you, I’m not running around with my hair on fire over mpox….but we all know they’re itching to cause a lock down or another pandemic.

I’ve got enough of my OWN “personal hair on fire issues” to worry about right now to even consider expending energy on another one.

This would definitely do the trick if clade 1 spreads. And I do think we need to pay attention.

Mpox outbreak: epidemiological overview, 5 March 2026

...A new recombinant mpox virus was identified in England in an individual who had recently travelled to Asia. Genomic sequencing showed that the mpox genome contained elements of clade Ib and clade IIb mpox. This case has previously been reported in the mpox clade Ib figures.

Further background information on mpox clade Ib and clade IIb is available.

Current epidemiological situation of mpox clade Ib up to 28 February 2026

Up to 28 February 2026, 34 cases of mpox clade Ib have been reported in the UK. Of these:

  • 29 in England
  • 0 in Northern Ireland
  • 3 in Scotland
  • 2 in Wales
To 28 February 2026, most of these cases have reported direct or indirect links to travel to countries where mpox clade Ib is circulating. More information can be found in the list of Clade I mpox: affected countries.

However, the epidemiology of clade Ib mpox has changed with person-to-person transmission now occurring outside the African Region including amongst gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) networks in at least 2 other World Health Organization regions (European Region and Region of the Americas) since October 2025. The probability of importation into the UK has increased from medium to high.

But according to Toronto article listed above its ok.....there's a vaccine. You may still get it but it won't be as bad. They're neglecting to mention that if you just quit being a perv you're probably ok.....
Sigh....another plandemic. Just what we need. Time to go buy more toilet paper...

The current outbreak does appear more transmissible in practical real-world terms than the older stereotype of Clade I would suggest, because clade Ib is showing sustained human-to-human spread through sexual networks and then households. (ChatGPT)

What is making you think it's really bad? The recent news articles posted here seem to indicate that it is mainly affecting men who have sex with other men.
According to Google: Clade I monkeypox (mpox) spreads to humans primarily through close, direct contact with infected people or animals, or through contaminated materials. It enters the body through broken skin, respiratory tracts, or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth). Key transmission routes include sexual contact, household contact, and contact with wild animal fluids

The potential problem is the clade 1 fomite life span.

The mpox virus can survive on common surfaces for up to 15–30 days, depending on the surface type and environmental conditions.
  • On nonporous surfaces (e.g., stainless steel, plastic, glass), the virus remains viable longer—up to 21–30 days, especially in cool, dark, low-humidity environments (e.g., 4°C / 39°F).
  • On porous surfaces (e.g., fabric, clothing, bedding), viable virus has been detected for up to 15 days, with some studies indicating porous materials may pose a higher transmission risk due to prolonged viral shedding
