Whenever The story gets tot he exciting parts I end up checking over and over all day long despite knowing the likelihood of an update is low.

To the question... Is this the same Group that the girls are going to go undercover into to see how deep the rot goes?
We're just not sure.

Well, we aren't yet but I'm pretty sure clarity will expose the villains anon . . . . . .

Fire is SUCH an effective tool!!!!! There is no way the enemy can hide from it, and you dont wait around till it passes. Fire spreads twice as fast uphill as on flat ground. They best be running like their life depends on it. It burns half as fast downhill as flat. Should provide ample concealment from forces on that side.
Nice tactical plan CCG!!

On the Road North

No one was comfortable with the fire. It’s huge intimidating presence was like nothing most of them ever felt before, and the few who had were still suitably impressed and in awe by it’s power and ferocity. Between the heat, the smoke, the billowing steam and the bright columns of flame, everyone’s vision was horribly wrecked. All they could do was latch onto the back of the vehicle in front of them and trust they would make it through.

It felt like forever as they climbed out of the small valley, flames to either side of them. As they neared the crest, when the wind and the light was right, a few could make out the shapes of two black trucks off to their left, doors open and shapes moving about, but no one dared stop or even call out on the radio. They had to escape the inferno. The road twisted and turned, and the flames roared in their ears over the sound of their own engines.

Once past the crest, the flames were gone. They had already burned through here earlier and were higher up the hillside to their left. Kara looked over at Kingfisher. The look in his eyes she knew was reflected in her own. Did everyone make it? The radio crackled in their ears.

“Clear the crest.”

That was Jonas and Dylan in the rear. The convoy was clear! Now Kara’s biggest worry was their protectors. Where were Garen and Bekka?

“It’s not the first time we have used them for this.” Kara said to the several people standing around her.

“It was a little weird pulling into a cemetery though.” Hanna said.

“At least it’s peaceful.” Ewa commented.

Petra looked over at Ewa when she said that.

Brice spoke into the pause. “Well, if we are stalled here for a little while, I suggest latrine, food, then a rest cycle for those driving if they have a second driver ready. And for those that don’t some rest anyway. Speaking of…” she turned to look at Kara. “how long are we waiting?”

“They should be showing up any time now.” Kara answered with a non-answer.

“We could just call them on the radio.” Chance said, only to be immediately countered by Ivar.

“They wanted radio silence after the big turn at the fire so we didn’t lead someone this way.”

“Yeah, OPSEC can go too far, but I haven’t had it happen to me yet.” Jonas added.

“Well, the big push was to get the sick and injured to safety quickly, so what’s the plan, Kara?” Amber asked.

Kara looked around the group. She had to get them home, but she didn’t, couldn’t, leave Bekka, Garen and the others without backup. While she was thinking, she heard a voice in her head. It was quiet, but it gave her strength. ‘You know what to do. They will listen to you. You can lead them. Trust yourself.’

Kara felt the calm wash over her. She knew what to do.

“OK everyone. You have twenty minutes to check on the sick and wounded, get some food in you, make some coffee. If the others haven’t caught up to us by then, we press forward. We will leave one vehicle here to be the bridge and the link up.”

“And that would be?” asked Ivar.

Kara turned to Kingfisher. “I need you to stay here with Violet and Silas’ Toyota. Violet knows how to get home from here and knows how to code things for us on the radio. You might have to stay a day to make the link up with Garen and Bekka’s crews. By then we should have more info via radio and if they need help, I can send it from there.”

“Sounds like a plan, Kara. Kingfisher and I haven’t had much time to catch up anyway.” Violet said.

“Don’t worry about us. We will be fine.” Kingfisher said to Kara, as he stared straight at Amber.

“Great! Let’s get going. I want to get you guys home tonight.” Kara said as she walked off.

Kingfisher stayed standing there as the others walked away. All except for Amber. She walked towards Kingfisher. As she got to him, he placed his hands on her shoulders.

“Don’t worry, Amber. He’s tough and crafty. He will be fine. Worst case, Violet and I will go snatch his goldbricking ass out of whatever spot he’s lollygagging at and bring him home to you.”

“Don’t take too long. I don’t want to unpack from a move alone again. Done it too many times.” Amber said with a hitch in her voice.

“He will be home soon. I’ll take care of it.”

Kingfisher stood there watching her walk back towards Petra’s truck. He knew he would stop at Brice’s truck to talk to Kestrel and Brice before they left. He just wished the other two trucks would show up before they had to go with Kara’s plan.

“So, one- or two-hour naps, sleep in shifts?” Violet asked Kingfisher as the trucks drove out of sight.

“Let’s go with one. I hope we won’t get much time, though. I hate us all split up like this.”

“Yeah, but it’s peaceful here.” She smiled at him.

“For now. Too many spirits are wondering why we are here.”

“Now you are starting to sound like Brice.” Violet said, turning towards him.

“She was always right. I was just too noisy in my own spirit to hear much around me most of the time. I’m better now. It doesn’t take a combat zone to quell the background noise in my spirit now.”

“I’m glad. You were always like a box of anger looking for someone to happen to, not that I ever saw it leak out.” Violet added hastily.

“Brice said I was always too full of my ancestors, the warriors of old were still fighting to come out in my spirit. I guess all the trips downrange finally gave them enough fill of war, they finally let me have a little peace.”

“I think I know a little of what you mean. Just a little, mind you.”

“I wish you didn’t have to.”

“I know, but you knew more than any of the others that was where I was ending up.”

“It was Brice who made me see it. I didn’t ‘see’ what she did, but I watched and saw in my own ways the spirits of the warriors were always with you wherever you went. You always tried to learn their language, to feel their ways.”

“You were the only one who I felt I could talk about it with. The others would have just laughed.”

“Brice wouldn’t have laughed.”

“Brice wasn’t around anymore.”

“Amber wouldn’t have laughed. I told you that then.”

“She would have either went into doctor mode and psychoanalyzed me, or mom mode and tried to tell me I was wrong.” Violet paused and looked at the moon before she continued. “I scare her sometimes. I wish I didn’t, but I do.”

“She’s not scared of you; she’s scared for you. She doesn’t want you hurt. It’s a parent thing.”

“You haven’t seen her lately.”

“That thing Silas was talking about with you and Petra?”

“How much did they tell you?”

“Not much and they said to not talk about it with anyone else, but I figured with it just you and me, with no one else who’s talking around, it was safe to bring up.”

“What do you think?”

“I think if it’s something important to you, and you put your mind to it, you will exceed all expectations.”

She smiled at him. “Spoken like a true parent.”

“Yeah, I guess so, but remember, I had a small part in raising you too, squirt.”

“And teaching me half the tricks I used to drive dad nuts!”

“He wasn’t driven nuts. Those were just ways he saw his instructions were being carried out and you were learning.” He smiled at the small look of shock on her face.

“Yes, that’s right, Squirt. He told me to teach you that stuff, so he had a scapegoat and could honestly say to Amber he didn’t do it.”

“That sneaky bastard!” She chuckled as she said it.

“Yeah, I wasn’t going to teach you shit without his permission. Now, you sack out and get some rest. I’ll wake you in an hour.”

“I’m glad you chose to come north to us. I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you and Veronica too. You two have plenty to teach Kestrel once we get settled in.”

Canary Six Tango, Near Dawn

The radio woke him up. They had swapped a couple times through the night.

“ATC, TMO Heavy… ATC, TMO Heavy…”

Kingfisher recognized Kara’s voice calling in. He didn’t know for sure the one answering her, but she sounded familiar.

“TMO Heavy, this is ATC, go ahead.”

“ATC, TMO Heavy Flight is entering the pattern looking for landing instructions for filed destination.”

“TMO Heavy Flight, the runway is yours. Follow me truck is in place and will lead your group to their taxiways and marshallers are at the hardstands. ETA?”

“We are about ten minutes out from touchdown.”

“Good to hear it. See you on the ground.”

Kingfisher looked over at Violet who was smiling, for more than one reason he knew.

“Good! They made it there! One less worry. Now if these guys will just get here so we can go join them, all will be good.”

Violet just nodded to him as she peeked into the box between the two seats.

Kingfisher followed her motion. “What are you going to do with those?”

“Take them with us, of course. They will be valuable, and besides, I couldn’t just leave them.”

Kingfisher saw the smile on her face. She was just like her parents. Always picking up strays.

Main Forest Camp

Kara was finally able to relax just a touch as she rolled through the open gates as she followed the eight-wheeled ATV towards the administration and housing areas. She wasn’t completely stress free, but a big load was gone now. Once she got them settled in or handed over, she could focus on preparations in case Bekka and Garen needed help.

This was rolling through her mind as she followed the little blinking light ahead of her. She wasn’t sure who it was driving it, but her guess was Emelia, given her size. The drove along the winding road, past the turn-off for the housing area. Now Kara was a little confused.

It made more sense when they rolled into the RV camping area. In front of her she saw several people standing along the roadway, flashlights or Cylumes in their hands. The eight-wheeler she was following went right into one of the RV pull-through sites and stopped a moment. Kara saw a small hand held up in the ‘stop, stay’ motions she knew before it drove on to the end of the one next to her, providing a stop signal for the next vehicle. She looked across. She had seen this before, just with airplanes.

Each pad down the line had someone waving a vehicle with trailer onto one of the RV pads. As soon as the vehicle stopped, the person standing there raced away, down the line to catch the next vehicle. It didn’t take long before they were all in slots.

Kara turned off the engine of the truck and just sat there. She wasn’t sure how long she just sat before there was a thumping on her door. Opening it, she looked down at who it was.

“Which trucks have the sick and injured? We have the stokes on the eight-wheeler and Sabine has a clinic set up over in the Admin building we are taking them too. Everyone else, we have hot food in the RV camp building.” Emilia said quickly and with far too much energy compared to how Kara felt.

“The big pick-up with the Airstream has the worst one. Start there. I’ll try to herd the rest of the able-bodied.”

“Derek, Gretchen, Felicia, and Owen are already starting that. Bron is waiting with the food and Doug is with Sabine waiting on the casualties.”

“Shit! You guys have it all handled. What’s left for me to do now?” Kara asked, hoping it wasn’t much.

“Get some food, make introductions, then we figure what’s next.” Emelia said as she went over to the eight-wheeler.

“I know we don’t have everyone, but we have most of you. I’m Doug. I know Garen has filled you all in on most of the overall structure and idea of this place and what we are trying to do. The forest areas are the areas I’m supposed to control and watch over. It’s a big area and it’s going to take a lot of us to keep all of us safe here. Right now, the main goal is to get all of you guys fed and some sleep. We had you guys park down here so you were all together rather than string you all up and down the houses and end up with people scrambled in the dark. In the morning, after everyone has had time to get some rest, and the rest rejoin us, we will start showing you around and figuring out who is going in what house. If you have needs or problems before then, several of us will be around, either here or in the main admin building where we have somebody with the sick. So, eat up, relax, the comfort station in the middle works, so there are hot showers and flush toilets available.”

Doug walked back over to the counter where Bron was dishing out a second plate of food to Petra and Jennifer.

“Well, I guess the sleepy little back corner of our realm isn’t so sleepy anymore.” Bron said after Petra and Jennifer walked away.

“That’s for sure. I guess it’s both good and bad. It’s like when the park sees it’s first rush during spring break after the calm wilderness feel of wintertime.”

“Yeah?”

“The mood is different, but now it won’t be, well we won’t feel like a pat of butter scraped over too many pieces of toast.”

“It was getting kinda cartoonish, trying to cover everything, do everything and prepare for more. Now there will be more people to shoulder the load, that’s for sure.” Bron said as she made a plate for Doug.

“I know I’ll feel better once the rest are back.”

“Yeah, me too, but I know it’s doubly so for you. I’m sure they will be fine.”

“That’s what I keep telling myself, but Kara is working something in case they need help.” Doug said as he took the plate she handed him.

CCG, up story a ways you mentioned something about checking to make sure someone was not wearing polarized glasses. Could you expound on that?

Polarization cuts glare and stray reflection, like the glint off of a wire stretched across a trail. that was some old school training. The other thing is proper use of a polarizer filter on a camera is used to actually detect IEDs, so Garen's older training doesn't reflect some of the newer elements dealing with light refraction, polarization and IED detection.

The trucks were in the center of the road now. This gave them a better buffer from the flames. It was hard to talk over the roar of the flames without shouting. Didn’t matter. No one felt much like talking anyway. Everyone was focused on the flames, trying to spot movement. This was tough because everything was moving, or at least it looked like it was, with the jumping flames throwing shadow and light all over the place in a crazy dance.

The heat was drying them out and driving their thirst to near unquenchable levels, but everyone stayed focused, a hard task as the minute hand on their watches made the circuit once then twice. They stayed in place well over an hour, then two until the flames had pushed things back far enough to give a better look at the near ground.

With the speed everything burned, the larger healthy trees were spared as the greedy flames tore through the underbrush, choked with decades of bushes, shrubs and thickets of vines. This wasn’t as horrible as many would make it out to be. The forests need an occasional cleansing to keep things in check and improve the health of the forest as a whole. The problem is when people prevent the periodic clearing tha the fuel load builds up to the point when the spark finally hits, it burns too hot and too long, destroying everything.

There was no signal, no timer, no pre-set point, but the eight of them seemed to come to a mutual observation point. It was time to move to the next location. Few words were said as they piled back into the trucks to move up the road to another ambush point where they would wait a couple more hours to see if anyone tried following them. The last two in were the drivers.

Garen walked up to Bekka.

“Thing you used enough dynamite there Butch?”

“Better now than in the summer when it would have really taken off, jumped a few ridges and ate everything.”

“I know you did the calculations, but it still looks excessive.”

“Then again, maybe seeing the extent we are willing to go to might make them think twice about attacking people.” Bekka said as she climbed into the driver’s seat of the truck.

“I hope so.”

“Right now, doing the math, we can accommodate each family a house. The only stipulation is if we spread out now, there won’t be much room to expand later. Most of the houses are three bedroom, but there are a few four-bedroom ones. We will go around and do some picking and choosing. There are a couple already spoken for, but that shouldn’t hurt the selection. We have a couple wheelchairs available so Tracy and Sofia can be part of the process too.” Doug said to the gathered group.

There was an excitement in the air. The place was beautiful in the daylight and if the rest of the cabins were like the one they saw in the RV park, they had a very good feeling they were going to like it here, which was fortunate since they didn’t necessarily know of somewhere else to go.

Ivar, Amber and Sofia were together looking around after Doug’s speech.

“Here we go again. Picking a house while he’s running around somewhere else. Just like Spain.” Amber said, the frustration thick in her voice.

Ivar put his arm around her shoulders as Sofia held her hand. Ivar’s gruff voice was still able to make her chuckle.

“Hey, it’s not my fault this time. Besides, I don’t think things are going to be carved in stone in the next twenty minutes. We just find two and stake them out. If he doesn’t like it…”

“If he doesn’t like it, tough ****ing shit.” Sofia chimed in, getting a grin out of Amber.

“I wonder if Doug has any purple paint handy.” Amber said.

“Bathroom again?” Ivar asked.

“Sounds like a plan, since we just know how much he likes purple.” Sofia said, the sarcasm practically dripping before she busted up laughing.

“Technically, the color was ‘lavender’. Or that’s what I had the guy put on the can. He hated that bathroom the whole time we were there.” Amber said, smiling.

“Come on. Let’s find some cabins” Sofia said.

Jonas and Petra were walking down the path, each holding one of Jennifer’s hands. This was to keep her from running ahead and causing chaos as only a rambunctious ten-year-old can.

Jonas couldn’t help but notice how much Jennifer had come out of her shell lately. He knew the change in venue was a big part of it, but he couldn’t discount Petra’s influence on her. Margaret was always seeing the worst in people, always so protective of Jennifer. It seemed like she was trying to keep Jennifer a five-year-old forever.

Petra, on the other hand, was a much more positive person. Part protector, part helper, part co-conspirator, she reinforced Jennifer where she needed it and encouraged her to be the girl she was growing into. It was this hugely positive influence Petra had on her that scared him. He worried what would happen if the relationship they had, and what they were now trying to build it into, went wrong. What would it do to Jennifer? That was one of the big things keeping him from considering progressing with her in the first place.

Right now he forced himself to focus on the positive as he watched Jennifer and Petra giggle and laugh as they walked along.

“They sure are doing everything they can to make us feel wanted.” Alonzo said.

“I just hope things are still looking as friendly a week, a month or a year down the road.” Ewa said in a soft voice. It was just the two of them standing in the main room of the four bedroom house they had picked for them, Hanna and Rahel. The furniture was a rustic style but proper for the cabin. The fireplace was well used but clean. One of the advantages of the four-bedroom cabins was a second bathroom. Hanna already gave her choice about which bedroom she wanted and picked one for Rahel before she was out the door, headed to the makeshift clinic to check in on the sick kids.

“Well, if things turn a way you don’t like, remember the offer is still there if you decide to bolt. The Beatle can fit all your stuff and Leanan, but I hope you will give it a try for now.”

“I will. You have no idea what your offer means to me. Thank you.”

“The house is beautiful.” Kestrel said for the fourth time as she walked around it, carrying little Shannon in her sling.

“It reminds me of your mom’s cabin.” Dylan said in agreeance.

“Yeah, it kinda does.” Kestrel said wistfully.

Dylan slid his arm around Kestrel. “This place has a good feel to it, so do the people. I think little Shannon is going to like growing up here.”

Later, at the Admin Building

Everyone was running around, trying to get settled. The chaos of moving into a new home was magnified by the number of houses and families. Some people had a lot more to unpack than others. When a person or family was finished, they would look around to see who else needed help. Through it all, Doug, Bron, Owen, Felicia, Derek and Gretchen were going group to group, trying to see where they could help settle people in.

While all of this was going on, a few people cycled through the Admin building to check on the sick and injured. Hanna and Sabine were seeing to the patients while Andrea was running the radios. Late in the afternoon, Sabine sent Hanna back over to check in with Bron. This was when she had a visitor.

“It’s great to see you again, Sabine.” Jonas said as he walked into the sick bay.

“Glad you guys finally made it here. We were beginning to worry.” She said as she set her stethoscope down.

Jonas looked her up and down.

“It suits you. You look good. I’m glad everything worked out.”

“Huh?” she said as she tried to mask her surprise, hoping she wasn’t blushing as hard as her warm skin told her she was.

“Everything going ok with you and Andrea’s pregnancy?” Jonas continued.

Sabine was a little tongue-tied at the moment. “Fine and healthy.” Was all she could spit out.

“That’s good. I’m glad you got what you wanted, and happy to have helped.”

Now Sabine knew she was redder than Alyson’s hair!

“How long have you known?”

“Since Garen told us you three were pregnant. There was no way you could disguise it being two women, with almost a foot or more height difference between you.” He paused, a stray though shooting to his lips now. “It WAS just the two of you, right? Paige wasn’t there?”

Now Sabine was the one who grinned. “No, Paige was all Henrik. I guess I must have got the dose wrong. You weren’t supposed to remember this much.”

“Oh, don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a ton of distinct memories. There’s a lot of fuzz around all their edges. It was more all the other incidentals lining up that brought it into focus.”

“OK, good to know. Next question, now what?” Sabine asked him. Better to get it out in the open right up front.

“Depends. Who knows?”

“Right now? Me, you now, and Petra.”

“Petra! How does she know?”

“She drove the UTV dropping you off and picking you up.”

“Well, that might make things awkward.”

“Probably not. She knew all this about you and from what I understand, she chased you, with the full knowledge. So back to my question. What now?”

“I will be as helpful as you want, but I think the fewer people who know, the better.”

Sabine nodded. “I know it might make things awkward at the least for Andrea if she knew it was you. The easiest way to do that is we keep it quiet like we have been.”

“Probably for the best.” He stood there for a moment. “I have no regrets in helping you two out. I hope you don’t have any ‘buyer’s remorse’.”

She smiled at him, a rare full grin. “No buyer’s remorse. You were a real gentleman to help out some ladies in need. It even helped a few other issues beyond the intended. Now, with you and Petra. Remind her to swing in here for some birth control if she needs or wants it.”

Now it was Jonas’ turn to blush.

“Sure thing, Sabine.”

“And another thing. Considering her tiny size and your ‘not so tiny’ size, be careful the first few times.”

Jonas smiled back at her now. “My first time, my girlfriend was her size. It was her first time too. We learned to be careful, and I still remember those lessons.”

“Good.”

Jonas was about to leave but he stopped. “Something to keep in mind. I was an impatient baby, and so was Jennifer. I was fifty days early, and she was forty-some days early. It seems to run in the family.”

“Good to know. Now, get back over to the house and get Petra and Jennifer all settled in. We will talk later.”

“It’s about ****ing time. Where the hell have you been?” Amber said to Silas as he came walking in the door carrying boxes with Violet.

“Sitting up all night making sure we didn’t lead anyone here who wasn’t supposed to be.” Silas said. As he got closer, Amber wrinkled her nose.

“No. Grab your bag from the bed and a trash bag. Straight to the shower, and bag those clothes. We will air them out and wash them, but you’re not making this place smell like a charcoal briquette the first night in a new house.”

“But…”

“Now.” She stood there glaring at him until he walked off down the hall. Then she heard something. She turned her head just in time to see Violet setting a box down on the table.

“What…?”

Violet grinned. This made Amber wary. That smile said she was up to something. It always did.

“Is that what it sounds like?”

Violet grinned even bigger and nodded.

“Do I want to know where they came from?”

“Definitely not, but they are here now, and I can’t right now because of Senshi and Ona.”

Amber walked over and looked into the box.

“They are beautiful.”

“I know. We will spread them around later. Right now, I figured this might be the best place for them.”

“At least there aren’t any Geckos this far north.”

Behind Another Cabin

“We have more fencing. It won’t take long to set up a space behind your cabin, so Leanan has some space of her own.” Derek said as he watched Leanan, Senshi and Ona feel each other out. All three were interested and young enough to not be set in their ways and attitudes.

Derek was worried when Veronica told them to hook Ewa up with at least a supervised play date between the three of them to check their temperament and such. This would have to be known sooner or later and sooner was better. Gretchen wasn’t worried until she saw how big Leanan was.

“That’s her dog, over there.” Veronica had said, pointing.

“Where? Behind the pony?” Gretchen asked, not quite catching on.

“There’s no pony. That’s Leanan.”

Turns out Leanan was easy-going and pretty laid-back. Much more so than the shy and standoffish Ewa. They convinced her it was a good idea for Leanan to have a space she could run and play without worrying. They just stood thee and watched the ‘getting to know each other’ process. It wasn’t long before Senshi was hamming it up and had Leanan romping and rolling right alongside Ona.

Gretchen kept stealing glances over at Ewa as the three of them watched the show. Gradually she saw Ewa relax, just a touch, and loosen her grip on the purse or messenger bag slung on her side.

She wondered what Ewa’s story was. She was even thinner than Kara and had a look about her like she was going to run at the tiniest sound.

“You made it here. The fluffy throw pillows over there will help us keep you safe.’ Gretchen wasn’t sure why she said that, and why she said it that way, but it felt right.

The Old Admin Cabin

It didn’t take Doug long to track down Heidi after he heard the rest of the guys were back. He walked in and heard the shower running. Since he walked past Emilia a few moments ago, this better be Heidi. He followed the trail of clothes leading to the back bathroom. As he did so, his nose picked up something. Smoke. His brain automatically categorized it as wood smoke.

He came into the bathroom to find Heidi standing in the shower, vigorously scrubbing at her hair.

“You want a hand with that?”

“Sure. I could use the help. Since you’re the one who wants me to keep it long, you can help me deal with it!” She handed him the soap. One of the first things he noticed was she was using a bar of strong, homemade soap.

“Isn’t this bad for your hair?”

“Not as bad as the six or eight shampoo and rinse cycles would be to get the smoke out of my hair.”

“Well, if you stopped going to those dive bars…”

“You’re not as funny as you think you are. I was standing in the middleof a forest fire for eight or ten hours.”

“Forest fire? Where? Is it headed this way?” Doug’s brain was going a hundred miles an hour now, trying to think about what resources he had, what they could do and…

“Hundreds of miles away. Bekka was careful where she set it. It’s not headed this way.”

“Bekka set a FOREST FIRE?!”

“Not a big one. It was just a hillside. There were natural firebreaks on three sides, and we set it at the fourth. It is probably all out now.”

“Why the **** would she set a fire in the first place?”

“To clear out a choke point and drive back some people who could ambush us and kill the whole convoy if they were lucky. This way, they just had to pull back, out of position for a day while we went through.”

“But she set a ****ing forest fire!”

“She said it was a controlled burn, and the fireload wasn’t high enough even do more than clear out mostly underbrush.” Heidi turned around to face him now. “Look, Bekka said she wasn’t wanting to do it, but it was a way to save lives. She said she took classes with her degree and learned all about some of this. I agreed with her. I’d rather burn up bushes and shrubs than lose Angelique to a firefight we could have avoided.”

Doug stepped back.

“That’s dirty pool. You could have left Angelique out of this right now.”

“I know, but it’s also honest and true. I’d burn the damn planet down to Emelia or Angelique. That was the honest thought I was having. ‘If I set the hillside on fire, Angelique will be safe.’ That was what I was thinking when I backed Bekka’s play and it worked.”

Doug heard the quiver in her voice. Heidi wasn’t exaggerating. She meant every word of it. He stepped forward again and kissed her.

Eventually, they got around to washing the soap out of her hair.
