The United States Senate on Saturday voted 55 to 45 to subpoena witnesses in former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial. Following the vote, the Senate went into a recess, at which time a deal was struck in private. Impeachment managers and Trump's defense team agreed to forgo witnesses and instead enter Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler's (R-WA) statement into evidence.

News broke Friday night of Beutler recounting an alleged conversation she had with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Herrera Beutler claims McCarthy recounted a conversation he had with President Trump during the Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol. McCarthy allegedly told Trump to "call off" the riots but Trump declined, saying those causing the riots were not his supporters. The president allegedly believed the rioters were members of Antifa.
House impeachment lead Jamie Raskin (D-MD) read Herrera Beutler's statement on the Senate floor before it was entered into evidence as stipulated hearsay.
Below is her statement:

In my January 12 statement in support of the article of impeachment, I referenced a conversation House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy relayed to me that he'd had with President Trump while the January 6 attack was ongoing. Here are the details:
When McCarthy finally reached the president on January 6 and asked him to publicly and forcefully call off the riot, the president initially repeated the falsehood that it was antifa that had breached the Capitol. McCarthy refuted that and told the president that these were Trump supporters. That's when, according to McCarthy, the president said: "Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are."
Since I publicly announced my decision to vote for impeachment, I have shared these details in countless conversations with constituents and colleagues, and multiple times through the media and other public forms.
I told it to the Daily News of Longview on January 17. I've shared it with local county Republican executive board members, as well as other constituents who ask me to explain my vote. I shared it with thousands of residents on my telephone town hall on February 8. (See blow).
To the patriots who were standing next to the former president as these conversations were happening, or even to the former vice president: if you have something to add here, now would be the time.

Democrats likely backtracked on their calls for Herrera Beutler's deposition when Trump's defense team promised to bring forward more than 300 witnesses.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told fellow GOP senators via email Saturday morning that he will vote to acquit President Trump when his impeachment trial comes to a vote. McConnell, while saying his vote is a “close call”, he believes the Senate lacks jurisdiction as “impeachments are a tool primarily for removal.” McConnell also said concerns about a president engaging in criminal conduct in his last days in office can be addressed prosecution after he leaves office.

McConnell does not make clear whether the “close call” is one of jurisdiction or of Trump’s guilt or innocence.

Colleagues–as I have said for some time, today’s vote is a vote of conscience and I know we will all treat it as such. I have been asked directly by a number of you how I intend to vote, so thought it right to make that known prior to the final vote.

While a close call, I am persuaded that impeachments are a tool primarily of removal and we therefore lack jurisdiction.

The Constitution makes perfectly clear that Presidential criminal misconduct while in office can be prosecuted after the President has left office, which in my view alleviates the otherwise troubling “January exception” argument raised by the House.

Given these conclusions, I will vote to acquit. Mitch

Speaker Pelosi can testify on when she knew about the threats to the Capitol, what she knew specifically. And in particular she could testify, we heard already the House Sergeant of Arms turned down National Guard protection for the Capitol on January 6th because, of course, the optics. And I think Speaker Pelosi can testify on whether she made a decision based on optics, based on politics not to have additional protection at the Capitol to prevent the terrorist attack that played out.

Saturday’s session could feature the vote on whether to convict or acquit Trump. Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy is presiding over the sham impeachment and will also vote to convict.

A guilty vote by Republicans will effectively end the Republican Party so Democrats aare keeping their fingers crossed

Democrats need 17 Republicans to convict President Trump of organizing an “insurrection” against the US Capitol.

This was after the 2020 election was stolen from President Trump by a dementia patient in a basement.

Today will include closing comments and then a vote to acquit.

I really would like to know what the RULES of ENGAGEMENT were for those officers supposed to defend the capital. I would not be surprised if they were forbidden to use deadly force.

From a military viewpoint, as I explained to my DW, if you're guarding a position you only call "HALT" once, twice at the most. If the person doesn't halt and freeze IMMEDIATELY your only option is, and your duty is to immediately SHOOT the threat! Not to wound, but to immediate HALT them....as in dead.

The second those protesters tried to breech the doors and windows of the capital building and refused to halt or retreat, (and many of them were ARMED with poles, sticks, etc.) those officers should have shot them in the face! Sorry, but that's how I feel and that's my military mindset. If those had been Marines guarding the capital you can bet that break in would NEVER have happened and there would have been a lot of civilian casualties.....injured, wounded and DEAD!

When an officer of the law says to HALT....you better well FRIGGEN IMMEDIATELY HALT or you're just asking to get shot in my opinion.

Now....on the other hand, considering all these recent police shootings of unarmed civilians, we have to come up with another way of incapacitating a perp INSTANTLY without killing them. Apparently those TAZERS aren't cutting the mustard. And another thing......I really think ALL law enforcement need to be at least second degree practicing black belts in some form of martial arts. It's pretty obvious that a good many of them can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

For example:
I witnessed several episodes and heard about a lot more of dipsticks trying to take on Japanese Policemen. Suffice to say it didn't end well for the perps. One incident I personally witnessed was a huge drunk Marine that wanted to take the "candy cane" from a JN cop. The "candy cane" is the Japanese cop's swagger stick/baton that's painted with red and white stripes. The idea being that they use it for traffic control as it's easily seen. Well to say that the Marine never laid a single finger tip on the JN cop is and understatement and our Marine was very quickly rendered unconscious and on the ground in a matter of seconds. He was pretty hurt....but he wasn't dead.
