Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on Wednesday held an evaluation ofOperation Protective Edge with IDF representatives, General SecurityServices members and others, where he announced the operation is to be expanded.

“We continue with strikes that draw a very heavy price from Hamas. We are destroying weapons, terror infrastructures, command and control systems, Hamas institutions, regime buildings, the houses of terrorists, and killing terrorists of various ranks of command,” said Ya’alon.

The minister stressed that the operational activities will continue and expand, and called on Israeli citizens to stay patient as the IDF attacks the terrorists; roughly 120 rockets were fired from Gaza on Tuesday, hittingas far as Hadera, 45 kilometers (28 miles) north of Tel Aviv.

“We will continue to hit Hamas and other terror groups in the (Gaza) Strip with heavy blows from the air, from the sea and from the ground so as to ensure the security of Israeli citizens. The campaign against Hamas will expand in the coming days, and the price the organization will pay will be very heavy,” warned Ya’alon.

The IDF struck 160 terror targets in Gaza on Tuesday night as part of the operation, and has hit over 440 targets since the operation started on Monday night, including targeted strikes on terror leaders.

Ya’alon continued, saying “I would like to praise the conduct of the citizens again, and call on them to continue paying attention to instructions. I again strengthen the hands of the commanders, the fighters and the support fighters in the air, sea and ground, who continue to act firmly and professionally to defend the security of Israeli citizens.”

“Even in these hours, the rocket attacks continue on Israel. Sirens were heard this morning in Gush Dan (in the coastal area), Rishon Letzion, Beit Dagan, Ashdod, Ashkelon and other cities around the country. The Iron Dome system shot down at least six rockets,” added Ya’alon, noting this morning’s attack on the Tel Aviv area.

At the start of the operation Tuesday morning, Ya’alon said it “won’t end in just a few days,” adding “we are preparing to expand the operation by all means standing at our disposal so as to continue striking Hamas.”

A couple of strategies can be used to contend with Iron Dome system.
One is to direct large numbers of rockets simultaneously at one target.

Doug Pologe @DougPologe · 15m
+ Another is to scatter fire all over the place,
since Israel only has seven Iron Dome batteries deployed.

Doug Pologe @DougPologe · 14m
+ Firing long range has an intended psychological effect.
Additionally, scattered fire tests Israeli air defense capabilities & deployments.

Israeli teens who were abducted by Palestinians were shot at least 10 times with a silenced gun, US official says - @nytimes

JERUSALEM — Three Israeli teenagers who were abducted by Palestinians in the occupied West Bank last month were shot at least 10 times with a silenced gun in what appeared to be premeditated killings, a U.S. official involved in the investigation said.

The disclosure clashed with speculation by some Israeli and Palestinian commentators that the captors intended to take hostages for a prisoner exchange but panicked and shot them.

The killing of the three Jewish seminary students followed the collapse of U.S.-brokered peace talks in April.

One of them, 16-year-old Naftali Fraenkel, also held American citizenship.

Israeli police believe the killings led far-right Jews to kidnap and burn to death a Palestinian youth in revenge, and the incident also contributed to an eruption of three weeks of clashes between Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli military.

(Not true, we posted about that ^^^^^^^^^^)

Missing since hitch-hiking home on June 12, their bodies were discovered on June 30. Israel blamed Hamas for their deaths but the Palestinian Islamist group has neither confirmed nor denied the allegation.

One of the three Israelis, Gil-Ad Shaer, 16, telephoned police and said "They've kidnapped me!" after he, Fraenkel and 19-year-old Eyal Yifrah got into a car which investigators suspect was driven by a Hamas militant posing as a religious Jew. A second disguised gunman sat in the front passenger seat.

A U.S. official involved in the probe said the FBI, whose mandate includes Americans abducted abroad, received a recording of the distress call from Israel within days and sent it for audio analysis in the United States.

Distorted, tinny reports heard on the tape after an Arabic-accented male voice shouts "Head down!" in response to Shaer's attempt to raise the alarm were found to be consistent with shots from a silenced firearm, the U.S. official said.

"There were 10 gunshots," added the official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The use of a silencer led U.S. investigators to believe the captors planned to kill the three teenagers from the outset, the U.S. official said.

Israeli officials declined to respond to the American account of the investigation, saying it was still ongoing.

"We haven't even caught the kidnappers yet, so we're not going public with anything more now," said an official with the Shin Bet security service, which is in charge of the case.

Escalation in the Middle East: The perfidious calculus of Hamas / Breaking News
09 Temmuz, 2014 | 15:11

An Iron Dome launcher fires an interceptor rocket in Ashdod

Hamas in the Gaza Strip barely support many it is downright hateful. Even so they can rain rockets on Israel. Meanwhile, retaliatory strikes will bring the Islamists Sympathies and flush money into the cash-strapped.

“Hamas is playing a dirty game,” rages Khaled (name changed by the editor). “The Gaza Strip is your game board, and we are their pawns. They do not care if they lose a lot of us. Mainly, they win the game!”

The man who makes air his wrath is a Palestinian journalist who has spent his whole life in the Gaza Strip. A man whose family has badly suffered from the crisis and blockages of the past years, and has therefore not so much developed a fervent hatred of Israel, but to the ruling of the Gaza Strip radical Islamic Hamas.
Therefore, it also does not write better his real name. Hamas is the most rigorous action against their opponents.

If you will, Hamas aims with her current hail of missiles not only to Israel but also to men like Khaled: With their latest weapons transition the organization wants to polish up her shattered image as a representative of the legitimate resistance against Israel. By letting shoot rockets that Hamas deliberately provoke grandees Israeli air strikes. The suffering it causes is to do two things: on the one hand radicalize the war-weary people of Gaza and back into the arms of Hamas. Men like Khaled to get caught again by the rhetoric of resistance.

On the other hand, the Hamas leadership aims to increase the visibility from: The break with the Syrian regime in 2011 and the military coup in Cairo last summer, as the Generals beat the interleaved with Hamas Muslim Brotherhood from office, the extremists of their main ally deprived. “Now they want to make us civilians as long bleed front of the cameras until pities the Arab world and exerts pressure on Egypt to open its border with the Gaza Strip,” says Khaled.

Escalation in the Middle East:Money troubles plaguing the Hamas

“Hamas is deep in the shit,” says political scientist Mkhaimar Abu Sada rare in blunt language. The otherwise reticent academics teaches at Al-Azhar University in Gaza City. The population of Gaza was close to open revolt against their rulers, says Abu Sada. Since the cash flow from Syria, Iran and is now dried up from Egypt, put the motion in massive financial trouble. For nine months, the government of the Gaza Strip have can no longer pay the salaries of its 40,000 officers.

Thus under pressure, Hamas had, after much hesitation admitted in early June on the formation of a unity government with the hated Fatah Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of the. But the kowtow to Abbas, who governs in the West Bank, did not produce the desired result: The unity government was unable to work due to internal feuds from the beginning and could not repay the outstanding balance of Hamas. The expected improvement of living conditions in the Gaza Strip remained from that Hamas continued to lose prestige.

So the radicals sat on escalation: the kidnapping and murder of three Jewish teenagers on June 12 and the subsequent alleged revenge killing of a Palestinian youth in the past week triggered the current cycle of violence. Hundreds of missiles flew in on Tuesday night toward Israel. The Israeli government approved the mobilization of up to 40,000 Reserve soldiers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in the fight against Hamas, it was time to “take off the gloves.”

He stands inside under political pressure to respond with full force to the provocations of Hamas. So far, he hesitates. A new Gaza war would create major risks, Netanyahu reputation and even the office could cost. His foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, who is pushing for the use of weapons, Netanyahu announced on Monday because of the following.

Escalation in the Middle East:Israel’s mobilization must draw no invasion by itself

The now approved mobilization to Netanyahu buy time, serve to satisfy the desire for revenge right-wing nationalist Israelis. The fact that it automatically pulls the invasion of ground troops with the associated escalation by itself, is not to say 2012, when it came to the last major slugfest between Israel and Hamas, Jerusalem was to march his troops along the coast, but agreed after eight days mutual bombardment to a ceasefire.

Whether the conflict in Gaza grows into a real war, now depends to a large extent from Egypt. President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi’ve Abbas assured on the phone that his country would push for a cease-fire between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas, it said on Wednesday in Ramallah.

In plain language this means that Cairo think about it, to make concessions to Hamas. Hamas will get involved only to a ceasefire if in return some of their demands are met. Its primary objective at the moment is to move Egypt to open its border with Gaza. If Cairo engage in it, the living conditions in Gaza, would suddenly improve – and Hamas would have their power for a while longer ensured.

Thanks everyone for their extended coverage of tweets and news feeds in Israel, lilbitsnana, mzkitty, HC, PI thanks your the best!

Thinking out loud here for a few minutes but you know who has to be loving this is President Assad of Syria.

For the first time in over 3 years he is not in the cross hairs and this should give him the opportunity to lick his wounds and regroup his forces.

I would think Assad does not have the ability to help Hamas and Hezbollah with the Israeli's in this conflict like he has in the past threatening to attack if Israel goes to far, and I think the same goes with Egypt, just way too much going on at home to venture into Israel.

Now what in the Hell is ISIS up to?

This group has to be spread pretty thin, with fronts in Syria and Iraq, probing Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait threatening Jordan and now sticking their nose into Gaza and what it looks like to me that ISIS is pushing Hamas, Hezbollah and AQ to the side and taking the fight to Israel which IMHO is a mistake at this time...

One thing that is getting over looked here is that Syria fought ISIS tooth and nail so they are not undefeatable by any means and a well organized and disciplined military should be able to take out the main fighting force but once broken up ISIS will turn into cells causing trouble for everyone in the ME who battled against them.

The million dollar question here is what will Israel do about the rocket attacks that it has not done in the past that will not unite the Muslims world against Israel if they go too far?

As far as I am concerned Israel can level Gaza and the West Bank as well, IIRC there was a News blurb about ISIS is trying to gain a foot hold in Lebanon so that's a problem as well.

The only country in the ME that has not been singled out for reeducation is Iran and I wonder what's up with that?

The next few days should be very interesting and I am holding my breath waiting for a hit on an airliner or a hit here in CONUS by ISIS like they have threatened to do, and what worries me the most is so far ISIS leadership says they are going to do something and a month later they make good on their threat, when does Raman don end?

Sorry for rambling on here...

Oh I forgot something that was posted earlier today but what is a "Roof Knocker" by the IDF?

Thanks again!

SIRR1

Assad still has his problems.

IS (or ISIS) has grown exponentially since they announced the Caliphate, tenfold minimum and I think that is extremely conservative. I have seen some estimates that they have grown 50 fold or more.

ISIS does not mass altogether, rather they set up groups/cells in locations and insert some leaders, provide weapons, etc and it takes off from there. There is no lack of volunteers/new recruits from all over the world. Last count I heard, there are thousands (maybe tens of thousands) that are from the US.

Comforting eh? not

There have been 5k militia from Syria pledge allegiance and move from Syria to Iraq w/in last two days along with their tanks and equipment. There were several hundred killed fighting the Kurds as they moved to the Iraq border, but there were several hundred Kurds killed too. (per info I glanced at last night).

I can't keep everything updated with having just one hand/arm right now, but I have tried to glance at stuff.
