Panic Early - Panic Often
To my fellow Floridians - getting a little too close to home...

And why do these people give their names? The State is all about protecting their privacy and they just call in to the news using their names and location.

Anyway, she wasn't on the Princess, she was on the ship that docked in Cambodia. ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION OF SELF QUARANTINE. Just checking temperature and calling of they have a cough?!? Do they not read the news? She can be an asymptomatic carrier...

SWFL woman stuck on cruise due to coronavirus returns home

A Southwest Florida woman who was stuck in the middle of a coronavirus quarantine is finally back home in Southwest Florida.

Holley Rauen arrived at Southwest Florida International Airport Wednesday after she became stuck on a cruise ship for almost two weeks when a fellow passenger was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Rauen several ports, including the United States, denied her ship access because of the virus. She said it felt like they were refugees. She says eventually Cambodia allowed her and her fellow passengers in its country and she was able to begin her trip home.

“True joy. Everyone cheered and had gratitude that we could find a safe harbor in Cambodia,” Rauen said.

When we asked about her experience coming home, she called it bittersweet.

“For us it was a very good experience even though it was stressful that we or someone would test positive for the coronavirus,” Rauen said.

She says the Lee County health department called her and her partner and asked them to monitor themselves for 14 days.

Rauen said they will check their temperature twice a day and monitor any coughs.
Well I feel safer knowing my county government is on this case. /sarcasm off

I could have been next to her at Sam's this morning.

Boy this is not good... Covid-19 cases are leaping higher in disparate countries around the globe -- doubling overnight in South Korea, Italy and Iran.

New research continues to clarifying how *extremely* contagious this virus is (as the rash of worldwide infections confirms). It increasingly looks like the only hope countries have of containing covid-19 is to use the draconian mass quarantine efforts that China is enforcing on its populace.

Don't assume that can't happen where you live. It may be the only alternative for your government to pursue, which is why preparing now for self-isolation/home quarantine is extremely prudent.

At this point and I'm hesitant to even say this I think they need to get out of the way let somebody that knows about radiological biological and chemical attacks run the show. (US Army)..If the CDC and HHS does not get on the ball real fast they'll be 20% less people in our country this time next year and that's probably an underestimate...

Maybe a good idea, but I doubt anyone would like the results.

I wouldn't want to destroy the integrity of the layers.

Hell, an absorbent gel might sequester some of the moisture out of your breath?

I've made a quick look for the ASTM specs on that material, looking for airflow characteristics, in particular....no joy.

Walkntrot's blanket statement doesn't ring true to me, now I'm on a mission.

Japanese health minister admits 23 passengers were released from cruise ship without being retested for coronavirus
From CNN’s Yoko Wakatsuki in Tokyo

The Japanese Ministry of Health has discovered that 23 passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship were released after their quarantine without being retested, a condition of their release.

“I (feel deep) remorse that an operational mistake invited such a situation and we would like to make sure that such a situation will never occur again,” health minister Katsunobu Kato said during a press conference Saturday.

The ministry also confirmed that one of the ship’s passengers, a woman in her 60s from Tochigi Prefecture in Japan, tested positive for coronavirus after disembarking the Diamond Princess on February 19.

She was among the 443 passengers cleared to leave the ship on the first day of disembarkation after a 14-day quarantine.
She is the first known case of infection after the end of the passenger quarantine period.

Just a couple of thoughts.
Dust masks. Yes, I know they won't protect you from the flu. But, I might use one just to stop me from inadvertently touching my nose and mouth. It's amazing how reflexive it is just to scratch your nose.
Contacts. I wear them every day. May stop doing that and go back to glasses, again to stop the reflexive touching around the eyes. An alternative might be shooting glasses, as they usually wrap around a bit and would further inhibit reflexive touching around the eyes.

I know it's not protection, but if I go out it might help me from touching my face until I get home and use hand sanitizer.

That's probably true.

Just making some notes here:

From the articles I've been reading the death rate, if I am remembering right, is about 3%.

Someone would have to run the numbers through a calculator but the (reported if trustworthy - not) is about 70,000 in China with a pop of several billion. Meaning percentage of pop is low.

However this thing is really weird. They get what....12 cases in Italy and they shut down 12 cities (maybe it's 24).

That's what has people spooked.

No one is scared of 24 million people in the US with the flu and 14,000 dead, no closures of any kind. We haven't quarantined a single city.

And just for a FYI the last time me and SouthernBreeze got the flu at the same time, we didn't go to no hospital. We self quarantined because we were to sick to get out. Drank fluids/gatoraid, and took a bottle of Tylenol.

In my mind the question should be why is the government quarantining places for this when they don't for the flu??????

Not trying to nit-pick, but if we go with numbers and percentages, the largest population est. I've seen for China is 1.5 billion, not "several billion." The infection rates in South Korea and the cruise ships suggests that under certain circumstances, the RO can be alarmingly high, and Iran's first official numbers were two DEAD people.

It's still early yet. A week ago, I was a skeptic, because China is just too bat-shit-crazy-dysfunctional to make any definitive conclusions about face plant videos, "hospital"/jail videos, corpse filled van videos, welded door videos, etc. Now, we have more reliable sources of outside information - less dramatic, so far, but seriously Not Good.

Short version for relevant stats and medical info: Watch a few of the most recent Chris Martensen videos.

Now heard on another forum - news piece the following news. Can this be confirmed? It is thus ... "I have several supposed leaked accounts out of China in which am told that Blacks and Americans of West European extraction are not succumbing like the Chinese". If this is so then it would be interesting.

Honestly I'm not very familiar with colloidal silver. I don't think that it would be a good idea inhale it, however. The thought behind CS is that contact with organisms will kill the pathogen. Topically silver compounds can work very well for this purpose. Viruses, however, typically spend a good amount of their life living INSIDE cells, so there is no direct contact between the CS and the actual virions.

Oral CS can interfere with the absorption of some antibiotics and thyroid and heart medications. I would probably not do oral CS either during an active infection because you do want the antibiotics to work as effectively as possible to prevent an opportunistic bacterial infection on top of the virus.

Its hard to make a blanket statement about what antibiotics would be most effective for your fish. For me, I like to keep Doxycyline on hand. The really good stuff like Moxyfloxacin is only available for humans.

I'm glad you said that instead of me. A long time ago I posted on another forum that Colloidal Silver doesn't work and people jumped all over me. Since you said it already I'll say it too. It doesn't do &hit because you cannot ingest enough to get at the pathogens. What rondaben said!

What Rodabean said is pretty much what Nightwolf said about Colloidal Silver as well, Nighfwolf said it has shown to be very useful for exterior treatments like on burn bandages or other wounds. But that taken it internally is not advised at this time.

He suggested however that having some around to treat other injuries you might not want to take to the ER or simply not be able to treat at the ER in the middle of a pandemic is a good idea.

He then mentioned again the fact that in 1918 and in the 14th/17th century outbreaks a lot of people died from non-flu/non-Plague related illness or injuries that could not be treated because of the pandemic situation.

I got dust masks to put under home-made salt masks or even to try wearing under the high-level masks that usually make my face break out (I get burn marks after about 2 minutes all around my mouth and nose).

I think using the menstrual pads (possibly taking them apart a bit) and using them with the salt masks or dusk masks might also help (even a homemade cloth mask).

Nothing is 100 percent but the masks and face shields (even made from a cut-up water bottle) do help and they are very good at helping people not pass on anything if they have already caught something.

Exactly. Three breaths and you're breathing through the walls of an inner tube. Good luck.

Do you know that the moisture absorbing material turns into a impermeable membrane when exposed to moisture...or does that product grab the moisture and still maintain a matrix that allows airflow?

Do they all use the same absorbent product?

Do all of those products perform exactly the same?

I don't know these answers either, but I think there are some physical properties of the materials used that aren't being considered.

Testing is counterproductive. It establishes definitively to the public that the virus is here and propagating. Being positive or negative does not change empiric therapy between this and influenza. fluids, antipyretics are the same for the first week to 10 days. The 20% or so that would progress to serious/critical requiring high flow oxygen or ultimately ventilation/ECMO will proceed towards that end regardless of testing and will be dealt with when they get there.

When you realize that this CANNOT be controlled the need to test becomes irrelevant. Not testing is simply a means to mitigate panic. People aren't afraid of the flu--they are COVID (or they will be, rather).

I worried that this would be the case, weeks ago. However, I sincerely hoped I was wrong. I would have very much liked, being wrong...

Here's the ultimate difference between this and the flu. The flu isn't killing the doctors who are treating the patients with flu.

No it is doesn't normally.... which brings us back to the original question.... why in the world would China do what it did for a "simple" outbreak of the flu.....

Calling this a "flu" is a disservice to all involved.... it may be flu like, but it is more than just the flu.

My beloved Dad worked the railroad. Whenever I would complain about my job, he would recall his starter gig at the bottom of the Southern Pacific totem pole: "Beats shoveling shit out of cattle cars."
I don't know what is worse, shoveling or using a hose to wash it out of something. I always seem to get the crap in my mouth when using water.... the other, when shoveling, I usually trip at some point and fall in it.....

Either way, shoveling / power washing shit sucks!!

Maths: If only 10% get the serious version, which has sometimes happened, at 300 million people in this country and if half of get infected, that's still 15 million people needing serious Care. A post earlier here said there are about 970,000 hospital beds in the US. So that means there is one hospital bed for every 15 people who will need it. That is starting to sound like China.

Do my maths sound correct? Maths is hard! This reminds me of a famous science fiction story called the cold equations. A woman had sneaked aboard a space craft that only had a certain amount of fuel and oxygen. And they literally could not get to their destination with her aboard. The equation showed that there was not enough fuel and oxygen. So someone had to go.

Your are correct..... MATHS is HARD!!!

Supply chain issues beginning to hit me personally now, but luckily nothing terribly important (this time). I ordered patio furniture for the new house from Macy's a few weeks ago and just received an email informing me of a (long) delay.

"Unfortunately, we must inform you of an unexpected delay with the receipt of your merchandise from the manufacturing vendor to our warehouse. The anticipated receipt date has been changed to 05/05/2020."

So China expects to be able to supply the furniture by May. Somehow I won't be surprised if the delay lasts a bit longer than that too.....
Someone is rather optimistic are they???

Negative room pressure is an isolation technique used in hospitals and medical centers to prevent cross-contaminations from room to room. It includes a ventilation that generates negative pressure to allow air to flow into the isolation room but not escape from the room, as air will naturally flow from areas with higher pressure to areas with lower pressure, thereby preventing contaminated air from escaping the room. This technique is used to isolate patients with airborne contagious diseases such as tuberculosis, measles, or chickenpox.
Could that be done with a fan in a window of a room (could use air conditioning filters to outside) with towels to block drawing air from outside room ???

I believe the bases were meant for quarantine of otherwise healthy people while they waited- not sick people. The people they need to quarantine now have tested positive and must be medically treated. They are likely moving them to an interim facility where they can provide mass treatment, yet where it is closer to a larger hospital with a negative pressure facility for very serious cases.

There has also been talk about evacuating Armed Services families from S. Korea. They will need a place for them to quarantine before they are released.

The problem with a dependent evacuation, besides screening/quarantine is that Lititle Kim up in Pyongyang might start to get jumpy.

ANNISTON, Ala. (WBRC) - The Department of Health and Human Services announced on Saturday that the FEMA Center in Anniston will be used to quarantine some passengers from the Diamond Princess.
Passengers who tested positive, but do not have symptoms, will be quarantined at the FEMA Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama. If an evacuee becomes seriously ill, they will be transported to predetermined hospital.
Passengers will be kept in a separate area than the training facility.
Here is the full statement:

HHS is taking precautions to protect the health of all Americans from Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). To that end, HHS and FEMA agreed to use a federal facility, the FEMA Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama, as a place for some of the American passengers from the Diamond Princess to stay. These are passengers whom the federal government evacuated back to the U.S. from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.

The passengers who will stay at the Center tested positive for COVID-19, although at this time they either do not have symptoms or have mild flu-like symptoms. Any of the evacuees who become seriously ill will be transported to pre-identified hospitals for medical care. Under the HHS-FEMA agreement, the Center for Domestic Preparedness will provide the housing, and HHS will provide basic medical care and all other support services for these returning passengers. Passengers will stay in a separate area from the Center’s training participants and will remain at the Center until they are medically cleared.

The Center has unique facilities and routinely offers week-long, hands-on training for large groups of professionals from federal, state and local emergency management agencies, hospitals, public health agencies, and law enforcement agencies on disaster response.
