#Hubei Province reported 4,823 new cases of novel #coronavirus pneumonia (including 3,095 clinically diagnosed cases) on Feb 13, with 116 new deaths and 690 cases of recovery. The total number of infections in the province climbed to 51,986
I am glad to see the recovery rate climb, but that could be because they stopped counting the dead again.

Outside China, Coronavirus transmission ‘iceberg’ may not be as big as feared

As infections from COVID-19 coronavirus continue to rise, a senior UN health expert on Thursday said that there were some indications that disease transmission outside China might not be the tip of the “iceberg” that had been feared.

“We’re not seeing a dramatic increase in transmission outside China,” Dr. Michael Ryan, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme chief, said, while urging against making hasty assessments.

Ministry of Health #Cambodia just announced that all 20 passengers from the #Westerdam cruise ship tested negative for #COVID19. Very good news. I thank the Ministry and the government again for their solidarity and humanity.

85 people are talking about this

As of 4pm on Thursday in Geneva, there were 46,550 infections rom COVID-19, the overwhelming majority in China, WHO reported.

With 1,820 laboratory-confirmed cases and 1,369 deaths, all but two have been in China.

In Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, 13,332 cases have been clinically confirmed.

Outside China, there have been 447 cases from 24 other countries and two deaths; one in the Philippines and another in Japan.

The biggest cluster outside China is on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which is in quarantine in Yokohama port, Japan.

To date, 218 passengers on board have tested positive for COVID-19, Dr. Ryan said.

Other cruise ships in the South China Sea continue to be affected by fears that they may be carrying the virus. Routine testing ‘showed no COVID-19 activity’

Speaking to journalists, Dr. Ryan explained that routine winter testing of patients with chest ailments in hospitals in China, Singapore and Hong Kong had not indicated widespread COVID-19 transmission.

“In emergency rooms and as part of normal winter respiratory disease surveillance, they’ve been actively testing thousands of samples that are not suspect cases of COVID,” he said.

“At the moment, we’re just not seeing COVID activity amongst those samples, and that would give an indication that the iceberg may not be that great – [but] it’s not a guarantee.”

Nonetheless, fears that only a fraction of cases were being detected were “as valid as speculations in the other direction”, Dr. Ryan insisted, before adding that no specific treatments existed for patients, beyond “standard antivirals” used for previous coronavirus outbreaks, such as during the SARS epidemic in 2003.

Vaccines and new drugs would take a long time and require a huge investment in of hundreds of millions of dollars, Dr. Ryan explained, before urging public and private investment to spread the risk. Jump in infections explained by new protocol

Dr. Ryan said that the latest data showing a jump in infections reflects a change in how cases are being diagnosed and reported by Chinese authorities.

From now on in Hubei province only, trained medical professionals are authorized to classify a suspected case of COVID-19 as a clinically diagnosed case based on chest imaging, rather than having to have a laboratory confirmation, the WHO official said.

“This allows clinicians to move and report cases more quickly, not having to wait for lab confirmation, which means that people get clinical care more quickly, and also allows public health responses in terms of contact tracing and other important public health measures to be initiated.” Cambodian cruise ship gesture welcomed

Confirmation of the latest infection tally comes after WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the Cambodian authorities’ decision to allow a cruise ship to dock there.

It had been reportedly denied entry elsewhere because of fears that its passengers may have contracted the virus.

“People with mild respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms are being treated on the Westerdam by cruise doctors & 20 of those are being tested for COVID19,” the WHO chief tweeted earlier in the day.

He noted that the samples have been transported to laboratories via helicopter at Sihanoukville Seaport and that all passengers and crew remain on board in quarantine.

Three cruise ships had either experienced delayed port clearance or been denied entry to ports. Often, said the WHO chief, without an evidence-based risk assessment.

“WHO stands ready to provide any additional support to the Government, especially in building preparedness capacities for COVID19,” he added, before noting that he was “deeply grateful to the Government, particularly Prime Minister Hun Sen”, for their gesture.

In an earlier tweet, the he also thanked Germany’s health authorities after Health Minister Jens Spahn called for more support from fellow European Union members to fight the epidemic.

To date, Germany has reportedly identified 16 cases of COVID-19.

“I fully agree agree that we need to work as one to keep the world safe from this virus,” WHO chief tweeted.

Outside China, Coronavirus transmission ‘iceberg’ may not be as big as feared

I haven't talked about it much, but a large portion of South Africa's population is currently infected with the AIDS virus and isn't in very good shape already. Once the China Plague hits them it will be interesting to see just how sick they get, how fast they get sick, and how long they last before they die. Indonesia, South Africa and South America are in the crosshairs in my opinion.
I thought they solved the AIDs crisis by raping virgins.....

Take the time in the next few weeks to enjoy the small things that we have enjoyed most of our lives.

I kind of envy you all here. I know what my life is going to be like here in the near future and what it means for my family. I work in an ER setting as does my wife. My son and daughter-in-law are ER nurses. My daughter in Colorado is a home health nurse. Another daughter is in Med school and is being prepped to assist in clinics in KCMO. The only person in my immediate family who will not have daily contact with this bug is my 18 month old granddaughter.

So, again, enjoy the normalcy you have right NOW. Don't spend all of your time here in this thread when you could be enjoying what normalcy there still is out in the 'meat' world.

ETA: This isn't a pitty party on my part, just a suggestion for you all to be careful and don't spend all your time here fretting about what's coming down the pike. It will get bad soon enough and with GOD's grace, most here will make it to the other side with minimal impact to your lives.

Excellent thinking, and I thank you for sharing. We needs tuns more of folk like you and your family who're educated, calm, clear eyed, resolute, and ready to serve, knowing, even as they do, the price that may be demanded for just being old school americans and doing what needs being done!

I do far less hospital setting work, which is good for the tri state area, as I am an incorrigible "comfort giver via therapeutic touch" type...I keep telling folks we already had ft. riley/spanish flu, surely we'll miss this go round- it just wouldn't be fair. But, life is anything but fair, isn't it. You enjoy your freedom and halcyon days, too, please! Today we were iced in and our venues shut down, and already I suffered cabin fever. Quarantine will be a problem lol. Blessings to you & yours, you have my prayers, and thanks.

I agree. With transportation shut down how did they determine what would be effective and acquire the amount of it to spray the entire city with trucks and these portambe machines?

Shadow

Those trucks and the fog they dispense were the most terrifying sights I've seen out of China thus far.
Some here have shared that there are particles in the fog that are binding with the virus, and heavy enough
to pull the virus down out of air. It sounded true to me, but I guess educating myself is in order, coz I don't really know it is true, or even possible.

So---let me get this straight.

We have a member who claims to be a horse. (but that's ok--I like horses)

We have members who do their best to live up to their on-screen names and "snipe" at everyone. (and that's ok--that's their privilege)

We have "panic-sex" members (and I LOVE it, Helen!) :)

We have MANY members--of all KINDS of persuasions--who think the rest of us are going to hell. (and all of whom will be sources of great amusement to the rest of us in heaven when they find the rest of us there)

.....and we can't tolerate someone who'd decided to adopt a new on-screen persona somewhere between Jed Clampett, Uncle Joe (Petticoat Junction), and Grandpa Walton?

.....

REALLY, folks?

The world may well be entering its darkest days.

I, for one, appreciate the slightly humorous distraction of "folksy" words of wisdom.

Can we lighten up and just accept each other--each with our own weirdnesses?

To me, that's what makes this place great, and all of us a FAMILY.

After all, it's not THAT hard to just shake your head and move on to the NEXT post, if it's that aggravating to you.

It is so funny the statistics in the West. This Wuhan city with a population of 11,000,000 or more

Of course they have an international airport and a big one at that. If this bug isn't all around the world by now in a big way I would be very surprised.

11.084 Million

2018 – 11.084 Million
Hence, the population of Wuhan in 2019 is expected to be 11.084 Million + 0.1288 Million = 11.2128 Million. Therefore, the population of Wuhan in 2019 as per estimates is 11.2128 Million.

I'm doing the same thing. I still had over 30 days of thyroid meds and told them I wanted to refill my 90 days. They told me that my insurance probably wouldn't pay for it. I said "I'll pay for it" ( generic so only $12 or so) The insurance kicked in and paid it. So now I have 4 months...and some others at different mg, so actually over 6. I don't have a thyroid due to Graves disease, so I 'have' to have it.

I'm doing the same with bp meds also.

When I told the pharmacist assistant, it is because of China....she looked at me like she had heard that remark before.

This was at Walmart.

I understand that 90% of US pharmaceuticals come from China. We are screwed.

Saved, to glorify God.
TIP- Since it appears that not all healthy people put into quarantine for a couple of weeks because of their possible exposure to an infected person, are not (in every instance) put into ISOLATED (from each other) quarantine, some are quarantined AS A GROUP rather than individually. (not good)

If you are put into a group and quarantined as a group, do not fraternize with others awaiting discharge from quarantine. Don't "pass the time" playing cards together, or any game, sport, crafts or recreation which involves shared touching of objects. Don't share the TV remote.

Wear a mask when not alone(if they give you one). Make a mask from accordion folding a paper towel if they don't supply any masks.(better than nothing). Keep as much distance as you can from other people.

My local Sam's club is starting to have gaping holes in their stock. White rice is GONE! No 50 or 25 pound bags. Pinto beans are almost gone, maybe 20 of the 12 pound bags left. The second shelves that are reserved for restock have partial pallets instead of the normal full sized reloads. They are using pallets of water to fill in the holes as well, in the past all water was kept in the back of the store. The local Albertsons was almost out of flour today....it was fully stocked 2 days ago.....four corners area.
Ours was still fully stocked with 50 lbs rice as of yesterday. 3/4 pallet in the slot and two more full pallets in the rack. 25 lbs bags of pinto beans were 1/2 pallet in slot, one full pallet up.

ETA: Only hole I noticed was curcumin suppliments

Day by day
I hit Sam’s, WalMart, and Aldi yesterday for normal shopping and all were well stocked and had typical numbers of patrons. Supply chain issues have not hit for general consumables yet but I imagine some warehouses are slowly emptying and the last freighters from China will soon be unloaded. I would really like to be wrong but we will see.

Good tends to be a process and bad an event, just the nature of reality. Complex systems are often adaptable and redundant and show little obvious sign of a problem until there is catastrophic failure. People here tend to see the non-obvious signs and take precautions. The public at large is otherwise occupied by anything that only requires feeling, not rationality, and is frequently surprised and at risk.

Today I hit a different HEB. The 'supply chain problems' notice I mentioned some pages back was also posted at this location in the facial tissue area. Also, in the OTC cough/cold meds area there were several shelves empty with similar notices posted.

There are a lot of flu cases/other respiratory problems in Texas, so I would expect some of these items to be in short supply. However, the supply chain issues notes that are posted are something else entirely.

Folks, don't wait to long to get what you need.

Title: The Novel Coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, is Highly Contagious and More Infectious Than Initially Estimated

Abstract
The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a recently emerged human pathogen that has spread widely since January 2020. Initially, the basic reproductive number, R0, was estimated to be 2.2 to 2.7. Here we provide a new estimate of this quantity. We collected extensive individual case reports and estimated key epidemiology parameters, including the incubation period. Integrating these estimates and high-resolution real-time human travel and infection data with mathematical models, we estimated that the number of infected individuals during early epidemic double every 2.4 days, and the R0 value is likely to be between 4.7 and 6.6. We further show that quarantine and contact tracing of symptomatic individuals alone may not be effective and early, strong control measures are needed to stop transmission of the virus.

Tell him aspirin is made from willow bark.
Tell him "elderberry " is just the generic name for Sambucol, which is an Israeli pharmaceutical proven to inhibit replication of several viruses.

But honestly... at Day 9, it won't help. Way too late. At this point, if he's still having chest symptoms (cough, congestion, shortness of breath), it's time to see a doctor... secondary bacterial infection is possible. "Normal" (and of course, there are always outliers) flu cases are beyond most acute symptoms by day 9-10, although severe fatigue may keep them down for a few more days. And rest is important- you definitely can relapse or get secondary infection by pushing too hard, too soon.

Well, after visiting the Alldaychemist website this morning, and then WalMart this afternoon, I'd say it's already too late for many things. ADC has made huge changes in allowable amounts per order... last week, I bought 15 bottles liquid Amoxicillin and the same number of liquid Augmentin. Today., they're sold out of one, and the other is limited to 3 bottles... and the price is 80% higher than last week.

Walmart... I have NEVER seen that store in such disarray... not even during the holidays. I just had a few holes to fill in the preps... and that was a good thing! The OTC meds aisle was badly picked over... several things were only available in the (pricey) brand name. Hubby immediately noticed that many products (almost the entire shelf of eye care stuff, and pretty much all the OTC pain and fever reducers) had only one or two items... instead of a couple dozen. No one was hurriedly restocking, either.

When we got to the checkout, the cashier motioned to my few "healthcare" items and casually remarked, "good idea... better get them before we run out". The place was a zoo (hubby also remarked he's never seen them or Aldis so busy- and for a mid afternoon Thursday, he was right), so I didn't want to get into a discussion, so I just said, "I'd sure hate to be a manager here... they probably have no idea when or if they're going to be able to restock". She rolled her eyes and said, "you have no idea... I think they're all going to stroke out!"

Oh... there were NO elderberry products in the store! The entire section was as empty as the bread aisle before a blizzard.

In 30 days, if China isn't shipping, most of the store is going to look like that. If something happens to alert the herd... it won't last 24 hours.

Get any needed preps NOW!

Summerthyme

Thanks for the report, summerthyme, Hubby had to go somewhere today, he stopped at a Walmart in Fairlawn, VA. He said there was a huge display of elderberry products right in the middle of the store. Added more to the prepps.
