China Hit By Tsunami Of COVID Infections In Reopening Scramble But It's All Just Omicron, As No New Variants Emerge
by Tyler Durden
Friday, Dec 30, 2022 - 11:39 AM

There are good and bad news in China's scramble to emerge from its catastrophic 3-year long zero-covid hangover, into a country reborn, metaphorically speaking, and with herd immunity.

First, the bad news: Bloomberg reports that according to Airfinity Ltd., a London-based research firm that focuses on predictive health analytics, China could see as many as 25,000 deaths a day from Covid-19 later in January, casting a shadow over the start of the first Lunar New Year festivities without pandemic restrictions.

Mortalities from the contagious respiratory illness will probably peak around Jan. 23, the second day of the annual holiday in the country of 1.4 billion, Airfinity estimated, adding that daily infections will peak 10 days before at around 3.7 million cases. These numbers are roughly in line with our own calculations.

“Using the trends in regional data our team of epidemiologists has forecast the first peak to be in regions where cases are currently rising and a second peak driven by later surges in other Chinese provinces,” Airfinity said in a statement late on Thursday.

Daily infections are currently at around 1.8 million, with mortalities at 9,000, the researcher said. That’s up from the 5,000-plus daily estimate by Airfinity earlier this month, and contrasts sharply with just around a dozen Covid deaths the Chinese government has reported in total since the dismantling of Covid restrictions in early December. By the end of April 2023, China may see 1.7 million deaths from this wave of infections, Airfinity said.

Airfinity’s estimates are based on data from China’s regional provinces, which had reported numbers far higher than official national figures, combined with trends seen in Hong Kong, Japan and other countries when they lifted strict restrictions, the researcher said. The extent of the latest outbreak has been difficult to gauge after officials abandoned publishing an accurate case count and narrowed their definition of a virus death.

Amid expectations that China would maintain its strict anti-covid policy well into 2023, Beijing suddenly ended its Covid Zero framework in mid/late December, abandoning the strict testing and lockdown measures embraced by the world’s second-largest economy since the start of the pandemic almost three years ago. The resulting outbreaks have been difficult to gauge without an accurate count, forcing observers to rely on outside estimates and anecdotal evidence.

And while the chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Wu Zunyou, said in a briefing Thursday that Covid outbreaks have peaked in Beijing, Tianjin and Chengdu, he added that the situation in Shanghai, Chongqing, Anhui, Hubei and Hunan remains serious. More ominously, Italy's Milan reported that up to 50% of passengers on a recent flight from China have covid. Wu added that the disease will probably spread during Lunar New Year, with many expected to travel around the holiday, he added. With the lifting of travel and other restrictions for the first time since the start of the pandemic, a huge rebound in travel is anticipated during the holiday week in January.

Meanwhile, with scenes of overwhelmed hospitals playing out across the country, officials on Thursday said some regions are now grappling with a surge in severe Covid patients. The occupancy rate of intensive care unit beds for the whole country hasn’t crossed the red line of 80%, but some parts of the nation are bracing for a peak in severe cases, said Jiao Yahui, an official overseeing hospitals at the National Health Commission.

The jump in cases has fueled concern across the globe about the emergence of new Covid variants that could be more contagious, lethal, or both. That has prompted numerous countries to adopt mandatory testing and entry restrictions for travelers from China, which also announced this week that it would reopen its borders on Jan. 8. Liang Wannian, China’s senior official overseeing epidemic response, said the country is strengthening the monitoring of Covid variant and will report to the World Health Organization if it discovers any.

Now the good news: while China's rushed reopening will likely lead to another wave of global covid infections, it will likely be the mostly innocuous Omicron variant; the risk is that a new, more dangerous/virulent variant emerges. However, so far no novel Covid-19 variants have emerged in China, according to a global consortium that’s tracking coronavirus mutations, easing concerns that the country’s record wave of infections would give rise to new strains that could circulate around the world.

National, provincial and private health-care authorities in the country have provided nearly 1,000 genetic sequences from infected patients to GISAID in the past five days, said CEO Peter Bogner. So far, all the samples continue to be omicron, though subvariants that have hit other parts of the world – including XBB.1 and BQ.1.1 – have emerged, he said.

“The variants continue to circulate without any significant changes that raise any specter of concern,” Bogner said. “You do not have any kind of data that suggest anything but business as usual.”

China is also ramping up efforts to track mutations, with the recent upload of sequencing data comparing with just 25 samples submitted in the previous month, he said. The data are important for helping with future needs as statistics on cases and deaths provide backward-looking information, he said.

“There is huge self-interest,” he said. “That’s the one you can act on. It’s actionable information. You can adjust your diagnostic kits, your vaccines. There’s not actionable information in how many people died. It’s the rear-view mirror. Genomic information provides actionable insights.”

Update from the UK, who have changed their position:

UK to require COVID negative tests for arrivals from China
Anirudh Saligrama
Fri, December 30, 2022, 1:23 PM EST

(Reuters) -The UK said on Friday that passengers arriving in Britain from China will require a negative COVID-19 test after a surge in infections in China.

Starting on Jan. 5, Chinese travellers will need to show a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than two days prior to departure, UK's Department of Health and Social Care said in a statement.

The move comes after doubts over the transparency of official data from Beijing raised concerns about a wave of infections.

Airlines will be required to check all passengers from China for tests, and passengers will not be allowed to board a flight without providing evidence of a negative test result, it added.

The UK joins other countries, including the United States and India, to impose COVID-19 tests for travellers from China. France, South Korea and Spain have also done so.

The Times and The Telegraph on Friday reported that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had weighed in to take the step.

The BBC had earlier reported that the UK government was set to announce the China arrival policy, without providing a specific time.

UK officials had said on Thursday that the government was reviewing whether to impose restrictions on people arriving from China.

Chinese state media on Friday called the imposition of COVID tests by various countries on travellers arriving from China "discriminatory".

China has rejected criticism of its COVID-19 statistics and said it expects mutations to be more infectious but less severe.

More European nations tighten COVID rules for China flights
Dec 30 2022

PARIS (AP) — France, Spain and England will implement tougher COVID-19 measures for passengers arriving from China, authorities said Friday.

France’s government is requiring negative tests, and is urging French citizens to avoid nonessential travel to China. France is also reintroducing mask requirements on flights from China to France.

French health authorities will carry out random PCR tests at airports on passengers arriving from China to identify potential new coronavirus variants. The new rules take effect on Sunday, but officials said it would be a few days before they are fully in place.

The U.K. government announced that anyone traveling to England on direct flights from China would be required to take a pre-departure test from Jan. 5.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay said that the U.K. was taking a “balanced and precautionary approach.” He described the measures as “temporary” while officials assess COVID-19 statistics.

France and Spain said they would continue to push for a Europe-wide policy.

France’s hospitals have struggled in recent weeks with a large number of patients because of three concurrent outbreaks: the seasonal flu, a wave of bronchitis cases and COVID-19.

Earlier, Spain’s government said it would require all air passengers coming from China to have negative tests or proof of vaccination.

Health Minister Carolina Darías told reporters that Spain would be pushing for similar measures at a European level following the surge in cases in China. She said coronavirus health controls would be stepped up at Spanish airports.

Darías didn’t specify when the new requirement would take effect.

Spain made the announcement after Italy said it would require coronavirus tests for airline passengers from China. Health officials from the 27-member European Union on Thursday promised to continue talks on seeking a common approach but held back from imposing restrictions.

“There exists a shared concern internationally and nationally over the evolution of cases in China and the difficulty to make a correct evaluation of the COVID-19 situation given the scant information that we have available,” Darías said.

Darías noted that China would be lifting travel restrictions from Jan. 8 and there was likely to be a major increase in people traveling abroad. She said the chief concern was the possible emergence of new coronavirus variants and it was important to act fast.

The United States announced new COVID-19 testing requirements Wednesday for travelers from China, joining some Asian nations that had imposed restrictions. Japan on Friday started requiring tests for passengers arriving from China.

So I'm posting this FYI. YMMR. There is clearly something spreading very quickly that is more than a COVID 19 variant. But no one has identified it except to call it "flu" because it comes up negative for Covid in testing. But Turnbull has been documenting this other thing that is spreading in the UK, Ireland and....China! It is also in the U.S.
Read thru this thread and make your own surmising about it all. Turnbull is calling this "new thing" SARS-COV 3". Just read the replies blue link

you must dilutet it massively, look at charts online. Health food outfits use to sell it in 1 gallon jugs, I had one and kept it in the frig for 20 years.

Also, they are going to stop us getting stuff we need without a prescription:

I'm new to his tweets. I just need to know why NO ONE else is tweeting what he's tweeting. He's not making it up. I can see that. Is he the only one that sees what is happening? He has my attention on this covid thing that isn't covid they are calling the flu.

This is a scary scary virus. In the tweet (post 66,574) I posted above a Chinese doctor gives several x-rays of patients with lungs turning white. So this thing is killing people in China and it kills quickly due to respiratory distress. And it's the same thing in the UK and Ireland.

What is confusing is that there is also this new XBB15 variant that is breaking out. That variant seems minor to me compared to this other thing. There is evidence that it has appeared in California (see the tweet thread above). Will anyone in the U.S. follow this like Turnbull?

If we're hearing about Strep a, pneumonia and full hospitals we'll know it's here. It seems like a brand new virus of some kind. I think we'll know soon enough. The problem is that all eyes are focused on this new variant XBB15. Who and when will they identify this new virus or will they do what they're doing in the UK and just call it the flu?

Fever.
Isolation. Terror.
No one to help.
I can’t do that again
I think we've been hit with another bio weapon. We're at war. I keep thinking of this verse in Matthew 24:22 "And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened." Those who have faith will handle this tribulation we are in as they hope for a better world soon to come. Happy New Year!

So these countries just 2 days ago were all self righteous that they weren't going to test incoming flights from China. Someone must have convinced them behind the scenes that there are unknowns or knowns.

What is happening feels very coordinated, like no one was going to do anything until they got their 'marching orders'. Now all are falling into line. I don't know who is making the decisions (WEF? other group?) but apparently now a lot more countries have decided to test (Canada, Australia, SK, France, etc). I will be posting articles in a bit. This testing thing is not going to stop the spread; we already know the serious illness is not showing up on tests. We also don't know how the tests are done and what proof is needed that the test is that person's and when it was taken. And if all countries aren't doing it, someone can connect through a country that doesn't require a test. If they really wanted to get a handle on it, they'd prohibit flights from China until their outbreak calms down. The UK/Ireland too. Not going to happen though...

Like I posted above, this to me seems very coordinated. No one does anything, says anything, reports anything unless it's approved by ????. Whoever ???? is. Some powerful world body that is orchestrating all responses, as they are universal around the globe and anyone who steps out of line is severely punished. Just look at what they're about to do to Bolsannaro (sp?) for daring to question the vaccines and for recommending the non-approved remedies. Look what they did and are doing to Trump, and he did recommend the vaccines. But he also recommended hydroxychloroquine and antibodies, things that weren't on the approved list at the time.... This isn't going to be front page news until they're ready to make it front page news. Until then newshounds are on their own to try to get whatever info they can find.

‘80 Percent of Patients Have Differing Degrees of Pneumonia’: Chinese Doctor

By Sophia Lam
December 31, 2022

While the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) top health body announced a downgrading of China’s COVID-19 management measures and renamed the Chinese term for COVID, Chinese doctors posted online that the virus has severely impacted the lungs of most of their COVID patients.

A respiratory and critical care medicine physician from The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University posted on Weibo on Dec. 28 that among the 60 patients he saw in the outpatient clinic, “80 percent had pneumonia of differing degrees.”

“Almost all of them were positive for COVID, and most of them have the characteristics of viral pneumonia from the scanned images. ‘The novel coronavirus pneumonia’ is true to its name. The disease cannot be regarded as the upper respiratory tract infection of the novel coronavirus ‘flu,’” the doctor wrote.

His post was removed from China’s social media platforms.

The Epoch Times wasn’t able to contact the doctor.

“Almost all the patients who came to us had fever and pneumonia. I don’t know the number of deaths, but our director told us internally that it is definitely not the publicly announced cold and upper respiratory tract infection, but purely a disease that hurts the lungs, which is terrible,” Dr. Song (pseudonym) who works at a Hospital in Qiqihar City of China’s northeastern Heilongjiang Province told the Chinese language edition of The Epoch Times on Dec. 27.

Severe Symptoms, Massive Infections: Doctors

Dr. Song said in the interview that patients reported severe symptoms.

“Some patients have bone pain all over their bodies like an electric drill is piercing their bones. Some have intense sore throats preventing them from drinking water or eating, and they feel pain even when they breathe,” Dr. Song said.

Song said he was infected with COVID, and so were many of his colleagues.

“Many of the doctors and nurses in our hospital were infected, but we just hang in there and continue working. I can hear my colleagues coughing painfully every day,” Song said, adding that only those with persistent high fever are allowed to go home and rest.

Dr. Chen (pseudonym), from a hospital in Anshan City of China’s northeastern Liaoning Province, said that many of the patients he sees have developed lung infections.

“Patients in our emergency rooms have shadows on their lungs in their CT scans,” Chen told The Epoch Times on Dec. 27. She said that she had discussed the symptoms of her patients with a former classmate who is now working in a hospital in Japan.

“My classmate said that, even when Japan was at its worst during the pandemic outbreaks, it wasn’t like the current situation in China. He told me that it is something serious since so many people have died with white lung syndrome,” Chen said.

White lung syndrome refers to the alveoli in the lungs being filled with exudative or inflammatory cells that block the passage of rays of a CT scan or X-ray and thus show up as white areas, explained Dr. Dong Yuhong. Dr. Dong is the chief scientific officer and co-founder of a Swiss biotech company and a former senior medical scientific expert for antiviral drug development at Novartis Pharma in Switzerland.

Most of the medical staff members in the hospital have been infected, and it’s difficult for the hospital’s medical professionals who are ill to get an appointment due to the surge in the number of patients, according to Chen.

“Most of the doctors and nurses were positive for COVID with a fever, and they had to stay at home. There was a lack of medical professionals, and the authorities just pushed medical students to the frontline and asked them to replace doctors,” Chen said.

Chen couldn’t get herself in the queue for a CT scan because there were too many patients already waiting.

“The whole place was packed with patients today, and I wasn’t able to get myself an appointment for a CT scan,” Chen told The Epoch Times.

This was the second time Chen tested positive for COVID, and she had a low-grade fever of around 98.8°F for seven consecutive days, according to Chen. Her mother and her sister were also infected by COVID, Chen said.

Shortage of Medicine: Doctor

Chen blasted the communist regime for its stringent zero-COVID measures and strict control of medicines.

She said there no cure for COVID has been developed in the three years since the pandemic broke out and that even the hospital was short of medicines for COVID.

“We have run out of medicine for COVID. Our hospital doesn’t even have any medicines left for colds and fevers. I prescribed medicine for pneumonia yesterday, but it was out of stock. Two days ago, I looked for some traditional Chinese medicines, but the hospital had also run out of stock of Chinese herbal medicines, including dried ginger,” Chen said.

The Chinese authorities recommended a Chinese herbal decoction, containing dried ginger and licorice root slices, as a prevention against COVID in 2020, as reported by Laonian Ribao (Seniors Daily), a state-run daily publication for seniors published by China’s northeastern Heilongjiang Province, and reposted by Sohu, one of the major Chinese online news portals.

Unable to get any medicine in the hospital, Chen went to a pharmacy but didn’t find any there either.

“The pharmacy staffer told me that the municipal government has issued an order to limit the amount of medicine that can be purchased and they had sold out all cold and fever medicines,” Chen said.

Face masks and rubbing alcohol were also out of stock in the local pharmacies, Chen added.

“There are thousands of pharmaceutical companies in China; how come we don’t have enough medicines?” Chen blamed the CCP for its control of pharmaceutical production and sales.

“The CCP has no humanity. They’re murderers!” Chen said in the interview.

Censorship of COVID Deaths

One Twitter post revealed that a provincial authority mandated “quality inspectors of each department” should see to it that novel coronavirus pneumonia should be avoided when doctors record the patients’ cause of death.

The post doesn’t identify the name of the province.

The Epoch Times wasn’t able to verify the authenticity of the tweet.

Recent official announcements show that the CCP is working hard to play down the severity of the recent outbreak that is sweeping the country, with hospitals and crematories overwhelmed and long queues of hearses outside funeral homes waiting to deliver bodies .

Following the abrupt dumping of its zero-COVID measures in early December, the Chinese regime downgraded the management of the disease from Class A to Class B, and scrapped mandatory isolation measures on Dec. 26, according to a notice on the website of China’s National Health Commission (NHC). The NHC announced on the same day that the Chinese name for COVID-19 has been changed from “novel coronavirus pneumonia” to “novel coronavirus infection,” as the virus now only causes “a common respiratory infection” with “extremely low severe illness rate and mortality rate.”

South Korea to Impose Entry Curbs on China Arrivals Amid COVID Surge
SK health authorities to limit fever drug purchases to deter Chinese from hoarding supplies

By Lisa Bian and Sean Tseng
December 31, 2022

South Korea announced on Friday that it would limit travelers from mainland China by imposing visa restrictions, limiting flights, and requiring mandatory COVID-19 tests.

The move came after the United States, Japan, India, Taiwan, Italy, and other nations announced entry restrictions on tourists from China as the country grapples with a surge in COVID-19 infections.

Effective Jan. 5, travelers from China must provide a negative PCR test result no more than 48 hours before boarding a plane to South Korea or submit a rapid antigen test taken within 24 hours before departure.

They will also be required to undergo another PCR test upon arrival starting Jan. 2, officials said.

“Until February next year, those entering [South Korea] from China will be required to undergo a COVID test before and after their arrival,” South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said Friday.

Han said that Seoul is “inevitably strengthening some anti-epidemic measures to prevent the spread of the virus in our country due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in China.”

In addition, Seoul will restrict the issuing of short-term visas to Chinese nationals until the end of January next year. The restrictions exclude public officials, diplomats, and those with critical humanitarian and business purposes.

And to effectively manage the China arrivals, Seoul is scaling back the number of flights from the country, and all flights departing China will now have to land only at Seoul’s main Incheon International Airport, Han added.

South Korean authorities also said Beijing’s move to stop publishing daily COVID-19 data adds to concerns over a new wave of infections and mutations, thus pushing Seoul to impose the new entry restrictions.

In order to prevent the spread of potential new mutated viruses into South Korea, Seoul’s pandemic prevention authorities have conducted “whole genome sequence analyses” on all confirmed COVID-19 cases entering the country from China since Dec. 16, according to The Dong-A Ilbo.
Unchecked Reopening of International Travel

Amid a major COVID-19 outbreak, China’s National Health Commission announced on Dec. 26 that the country would end all quarantine requirements for inbound travelers from Jan. 8, 2023.

Within 15 minutes of the announcement, searches for international flight tickets on the Chinese online travel agency Qunar increased sevenfold, with popular destinations including Thailand, Japan, and South Korea, according to a Nikkei Asia report.

And over on Trip.com, searches for popular overseas destinations were up tenfold within the first half-hour of the statement’s release, while searches for outbound flights and overseas hotels reached a three-year high.

Likewise, Alibaba Group’s travel service platform Fliggy saw international flight searches increase more than eightfold, and inbound flight searches hit a three-year peak.

Prior to the pandemic, China had been South Korea’s largest source of tourists.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), South Korea received 17.5 million foreign tourists in 2019, of which about 6 million were Chinese tourists, accounting for 34 percent, nearly double that of the second-ranked Japanese tourists (3.2 million), Aju Business Daily reported.

‘Largest COVID Outbreak in the World’

Beijing abruptly eased its strict COVID-19 restrictions earlier this month after historic discontent over the draconian curbs. But without adequate planning and measures for a graduated retreat from the policy, the health system was left ill-equipped for a rapid rise in cases among a population that had little natural immunity to the virus.

Overnight, frontline services in China were overcrowded, pharmacy shelves stripped bare, and hospitals stretched. Law enforcement facilities and judiciary shuttered.

As many as 37 million people are contracting COVID-19 in a single day in China, according to leaked minutes from a meeting of the country’s top health body confirmed by multiple news outlets.

The cumulative number of infections in the first 20 days of December likely reached 248 million—nearly 18 percent of the population—officials said during the National Health Commission’s internal meeting on Dec. 21, only 13 days after the regime rolled back some of its toughest anti-COVID measures.

The figure is exponentially higher than the regime’s official virus tally, and if accurate, it would mean that China’s outbreak is the largest in the world.

Limited Drug Purchases

Amid China’s major COVID-19 outbreak, panic buying of pain relievers and fever medicines has led to shortages in the country and abroad.

South Korea’s health ministry said on Friday that it plans to limit the sale of fever medicines to deter people from hoarding or buying to sell overseas after many reports of Chinese visitors acquiring large quantities from pharmacies.

“We will deal strongly with … the recently reported hoarding of cold medicine and concerns of an adverse effect on cold medicine supply,” the ministry said in a statement.

According to Korean media NEWSIS, a Chinese national purchased about 6 million won (about $4,700) of fever and other related medicines at a pharmacy in Hanam, a city in Gyeonggi Province, sparking public concern in South Korea.

The report said South Korean Law stipulates that “pharmacy operators are not allowed to sell drugs to buyers in the form of wholesale. Violations may be punished with up to one-year imprisonment or fine up to 10 million won (about $7,900).”

The Korean health ministry on Dec. 28 sent a letter to the South Korean Convenience Store Industry Association, asking its members and related companies to prevent excessive sales of cold medicines.

The Korean Pharmaceutical Association also said on Dec. 29 that it would demand disciplinary action and file complaints with relevant authorities over its member’s behavior of selling cold medicines in large quantities.

Australia to require negative COVID tests for travellers from China
by Stella Qiu
Sat, December 31, 2022, 9:45 PM EST

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia said on Sunday that travellers from China will have to provide negative COVID-19 test results from Jan. 5, joining a growing number of nations that have implemented similar restrictions as cases surge in China.

Citing a lack of epidemiological information and genomic sequencing data from China, Australian health minister Mark Butler said the government has decided out of an abundance of caution to require visitors to present a negative test taken within 48 hours of their departure.

The requirement will also apply to visitors from Hong Kong and Macau.

The government is also considering additional measures including testing wastewater from airplanes and voluntary sampling at airports for arrivals, Butler told a news conference.

"I want to stress that the government welcomes the resumption of travel between Australia and China... I also want to stress that this is a temporary measure, reflecting the lack of comprehensive information right now about the situation in China," said Butler.

The World Health Organization on Friday once again urged China's health officials to regularly share specific and real-time information on the COVID-19 situation in the country, as it continues to assess the latest surge in infections.

Canada to impose mandatory COVID tests for travelers from China
David Shepardson
Sat, December 31, 2022, 5:07 PM EST

(Reuters) -Air travelers to Canada from China must test negative for COVID-19 no more than two days before departure, Ottawa said on Saturday, joining other nations that have implemented such restrictions.

The requirements, which take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday, apply to all travelers aged 2 and older on Canadian-bound flights originating from the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong or Macao.

The temporary measure will be in place for 30 days and be reassessed as more data becomes available, the Canadian government said.

"We will adapt our measures based on available data, the science, and the epidemiological situation in our country and globally to protect Canadians," said Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra in a statement.

South Korea, Spain and France on Friday joined a growing list of countries, including the United States, Britain and India, that have imposed COVID tests for travelers from China.

The U.S. testing requirements also take effect on Jan. 5.

Travelers from China to Canada and the United States who test positive more than 10 days before a flight may provide the airline with documentation of recovery in lieu of a negative test result.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said Saturday it would implement a pilot project on wastewater testing from aircraft with Vancouver airport, and expand such an existing project with Toronto Pearson airport, to assess COVID-19 prevalence in various parts of the world. Samples are sequenced to monitor for novel variants, the agency said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told Reuters earlier this week it was considering sampling wastewater taken from international aircraft to track any emerging new COVID variants.

China had kept its borders all but shut for three years, imposing a strict regime of lockdowns and relentless testing. It abruptly reversed course on Dec. 7 toward living with the virus, and infections have spread rapidly in recent weeks.

China has rejected criticism of its COVID-19 statistics and said it expects mutations to be more infectious but less severe. China will stop requiring inbound travelers to go into quarantine starting Jan. 8, but they still need a negative PCR test result within 48 hours before departure.

COVID-19 News: While the World Is Concerned About China’s COVID-19 Situation, No Media Is Reporting About UK’s COVID Crisis And The Collapse of The NHS

Thailand Medical News
Dec 31 2022

In the past few days, since Thailand Medical News first broke the warning about the possible impact from Chinese travelers after the relaxation of travel measures by Chinese authorities and also about the lack of genomic sequencing data from China, the Western mainstream media has only been focusing on various issues on China but have failed to report about the unfolding COVID-19 crisis countries in their own home countries like the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

In the last 24 hours, the world saw 443,510 new COVID-19 infections and 1,393 new COVID-19 deaths.

Mind you with lots of countries not doing any testing nor even reporting COVID-19 data, these underreported figures still sets the tone for a worrisome projection of what is to come in 2023 as even in December 2019 when the first outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 was detected in Wuhan, China…..we did not face such kinetics.

To make matters worse, we now have more than 740 new SARS-CoV-2 variants, sub-lineages and recombinant variants in circulation and the new Omicron sub-lineages are rapidly evolving and spawning interesting mutations.

What is interesting is really what is brewing in the United Kingdom that not only facing a uptick in COVID-19 infections in the last few weeks but also various other respiratory infections ranging from influenza, RSV, Adenovirus, Strep A and also Pneumocystis Jirovecii.

In the last 24 hours, data from the Zoe app showed that there were more than 237,296 new symptomatic COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours! The country has seen an average of between 160,000 to 220,000 new symptomatic COVID-19 infections per day for the last few weeks since the start of December.

The UKHSA data shows that the COVID-19 hospital admission rate for week 50 was 9.56 per 100,000 population, an increase from 6.61 in the previous week.

While there are no proper updates yet with regards to COVID-19 situation for weeks 51 and 52 as the British authorities are well known for their laziness and slowness, various COVID-19 News reports posted by NHS doctors and online social media postings are showing that most hospitals in the UK are literally at the verge of collapsing to high volumes of COVID-19 infected individuals needing hospitalization.

While the British media has been showing scenes of hospitals In China, they failed to show what is happening in the United Kingdom at the moment, which in some cases is worse than what is happening in China!

While many European virologists and variant tracking experts that can be found on twitter have made claims that all the new emerging variants and sub-lineages are mild and do not cause disease severity, it would be interesting to know why many Brits are flocking to hospitals and getting admitted. I doubt it is due to some kind of ‘fetish’ but rather they are really getting sick and disease severity is truly occurring as we also are seeing many younger adults without any existing comorbidities and who have received all the necessary shots, still developing severe health conditions after contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Just like China, it seems to be difficult to procure accurate and credible daily COVID-19 death rates in the United Kingdom as the Tory government has developed a variety of reporting strategies to conceal this true data. While current estimates indicate that an average of about 75 Brits are dying daily, we think that the actual figures could be as high as 5 to six-fold and not including excess deaths linked to COVID-19, which are also rising exponentially especially heart failures! It is really ironic that British mainstream media are accusing China for lack of transparency concerning the COVID-19 crisis there while their own government under the Tories are no different!

It is interesting to note that the British government has stopped providing updates since the 28th Of October 2022 as to what predominant SARS-CoV-2 variants or sub-lineages are circulating around. This is no difference from what China is doing!

Reports from certain researchers have shown that the new XBB.1.5 variant is already gaining steam in the UK.

https://twitter.com/RajlabN/status/1608359289340727297/photo/1

https://twitter.com/vipintukur/status/1609042429872844800

However, a number of new sub-lineages have also emerged in the United Kingdom with some believed to be driving disease severity.

One is a new BQ.1.1.22 sub-lineage spotting a spike mutation S256P.

We also have a BQ.1.1 sub-lineage with S:Y144- + S:S494P mutations and another is a BQ1.1 sub-lineage with S:M153I +S:Y144- + S:S494P mutations

There is even a recombinant variant ie CR.1 (BA.5.2.18.1) x XBB.1 recombinant that has been detected in England!

There are also reports of a new BN.1.2 variant with a new E:D72G mutation that is also causing some concerns.

https://twitter.com/mrmickme/status/1607544702672474112

In fact with the current COVID-19 kinetics in the UK indicating that almost 1 out of every 10 people is infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and almost 23 percent of all new infections are reinfections and with co-infections also rising not only involving other SARS-Cov-2 variants or sub-lineages but also with other respiratory viruses, along with the fact that there is a huge diversity of vaccine and booster status in the country and also many immunocompromised individuals especially many with HIV, it is little wonder that the next more pathogenic and virulent SARS-CoV-2 variants or sub-lineages would likely emerge from the United Kingdom, where we also have a majority of the population who have hygiene standards that are no difference from the Chinese!

It is also interesting that the British government under the Tories will no longer publishing any COVID-19 data from January 2023 onwards!

So, while the rest of the word is concerned about Chinese travelers who could serve as potential human vectors for new SARS-CoV-2 variants or sub-lineages from China, they should also be concerned about all travelers originating from the UK as well and start imposing stricter testing and quarantine rules for these potential vectors as well!

We have yet to cover about the COVID-19 crisis unfolding in the United States, Canada, Germany and will do that in separate articles. [...]

My God.
If this isn’t Geert’s variant then I don’t know what is!!
