Pakistan seeks answers from India after crash of mystery flying object

ISLAMABAD, March 10 (Reuters) - Pakistan's military on Thursday said an unidentified high-altitude supersonic object originating in India had crashed in Pakistani territory, in an incident endangering civilian passenger flights, and New Delhi should provide an explanation.

The two nuclear-armed neighbours have fought three wars and have engaged in numerous military clashes, most recently in 2019 which saw the air forces of the two engage in combat.

"On 9 March a high speed flying object was picked up inside Indian territory by air defence operations centre of the Pakistan air force," Pakistan military spokesman Major-General Babar said in a hurriedly-called press conference on Thursday night.

He said the military was not sure of the nature of the object, which crashed near the eastern Pakistani city of Mian Channu and originated from the Indian city of Sirsa, in India's western Haryana province.

There was no immediate response from India's Ministry of External Affairs to a Reuters' query on the matter sent outside working hours.

"The flight path of this object endangered many national and international passenger flights both in Indian and Pakistani airspace as well as human life and property of ground," Babar said.

A Pakistan air force official at the press conference said the object was being analysed forensically and initial studies suggested it was a surface-to-surface supersonic missile, but was unarmed.

He said it travelled at an altitude of 40,000 feet, at Mach 3, and flew 124 km (77 miles) in Pakistani airspace before crashing.

Babar said the military would not jump to conclusions until they got an explanation from India, but said that Pakistan strongly protests against this "flagrant violation" of its airspace.

"Whatever caused this incident to happen, it is for the Indians to explain," Babar said.

Finally not a lurker!
India and Pakistan have long been mortal enemies and are both armed with sophisticated nuclear weapons. Many observers - including myself - believe that they are the most likely adversaries to initiate a nuclear war. They have been on the edge many times. For most people in the West, India and Pakistan are off the radar screen until something like this most recent terrorist attack makes the news. The reality is that the tension between the countries is almost constant and the fireworks could start at any moment.

Best regards
Doc
And with burgeoning populations and dwindling food supplies they have less to lose all the time.

Pretty fortunate that this occurred at a time of relatively calm background conditions. Pakistan's reaction acknowledged the possibility of benign explanations (including a test gone wrong). In more tense times, things could have gone seriously off the rails.

Accidental missile releases have happened elsewhere. Taiwan experienced an accidental cruise missile release in 2016: "It launched in the direction of mainland China, and hit a fishing boat off the Penghu islands"

Terrorists using armour-piercing bullets from Afghanistan in J-K
By Jasleen Kaur -- May 04, 2022 5:58 pm -- Updated: May 04, 2022 5:58 pm

New Delhi, May 4: Some of the terrorists in the Kashmir valley used American armour-piercing bullets in encounters with Indian security forces and were successful in breaching the bulletproof jackets of Indian Army soldiers.

The bullets are part of the American weaponry leftover in Afghanistan by US forces, which had to leave earlier than planned due to capturing of all important provinces and cities by the Taliban.

"The terrorists used armour-piercing bullets against security forces and were able to breach the bulletproof jackets worn by some of the troops. The terrorists have also been found using advanced Made in Canada night sights that again is the leftover stock of the NATO troops there," Government sources said.

The matter was discussed by the top Army brass during the Army Commanders' Conference held in April, they said. Armour-Piercing bullets or steel core bullets can breach protection provided against bullets by a certain level of jackets and create issues for troops carrying out operations.

The Indian Army has also started taking remedial measures to counter the threat from these bullets. "The terrorists have used these bullets during the encounters and they breached the jackets in a few cases. We were using level 3 jackets till now and from now on, we would soon be getting the level 4 jackets which provide protection against these bullets," the top officer from the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said.

It was estimated that the American leftover weaponry would be used by these terrorist groups to do violence in India.

According to reports, the American forces have leftover weapons and equipment worth around $7-8 billion including helicopters, infantry combat vehicles, communication equipment and other weaponry.

The majority of it has been taken over by the Taliban while small Islamist terrorist organisations have also gotten hold of this weaponry and are using them.

German call for U.N. role in J&K is injustice to terror victims: India

After German FM says India should follow U.N. “track”, talk to Pakistan, MEA calls it a “grave injustice” to terror victims

The government took strong objection to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s call for the “engagement of the United Nations” in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir in response to a question during a joint press conference with Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto in Bonn on Friday. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called such comments a “grave injustice” to victims of terrorism.
In her remarks, Ms. Baerbock said Germany supports U.N. role in resolving the Kashmir dispute, praised the LoC ceasefire agreement of February 2021, and also called for a “political dialogue” between India and Pakistan.
“Germany has a role and responsibility with regard to the situation of Kashmir. Therefore, we support intensively the engagement of the United Nations to find peaceful solutions in the region,” Ms. Baerbock said after bilateral talks with Mr. Bhutto in the German capital, where he said he had raised the Kashmir issue.

“There are tensions as [Mr. Bhutto] described, so we encourage Pakistan and we encourage India to follow the track of the ceasefire, to follow the track of the United Nations, and to intensify the political dialogue, and also the political and practical cooperation in the region,” she added.
Reacting sharply to the wording of Ms. Baerbock’s comments, the MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Saturday said that the “role and responsibility” of any “serious and conscientious member of the global community” was to call out international, cross-border terrorism.
“The Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has borne the brunt of such a terrorist campaign for decades. This continues till now,” Mr. Bagchi said referring to the unfinished prosecution of Pakistan-based terrorists involved in the Mumbai 26/11 attacks. “When states do not recognise such dangers, either because of self-interest or indifference, they undermine the cause of peace, not promote it. They also do grave injustice to the victims of terrorism,” he added.
Agreeing with Ms. Baerbock on the U.N. role, Mr. Bhutto said that peace in South Asia is not possible without the “peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the U.N. resolutions, in accordance with international law,” and even sought to draw a parallel between “unilateral actions in Ukraine” and “unilateral actions in Kashmir”, in reference to the government’s August 2019 reorganisation of the State.
The comments came a day after a speech by Home Minister Amit Shah in Baramullah in Kashmir, where he ruled out a dialogue process with Pakistan, saying the Modi government would not talk to Pakistan, but to “the people of Kashmir” only.
Earlier this week, New Delhi had also conveyed objections to Washington over the visit of the U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan to Muzaffarabad, and the U.S.’s reference to the area under Pakistani occupation as “Azaad Jammu Kashmir”, indicating concern within the government about global references to the Kashmir dispute. In June, during a visit to Islamabad, Ms. Baerbock had also spoken about supporting the United Nations role, which India rejects, and the need to ensure that “human rights are being guaranteed” in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the MEA had not responded to the comments at the time.

Background

Since the Simla Agreement of 1972, when India and Pakistan agreed to resolve their disputes bilaterally, New Delhi has not recognised the role of the United Nations in Jammu and Kashmir, and the issue has remained largely dormant at the U.N. On August 16, 2019, days after the government’s move to reorganise Jammu and Kashmir and amend Article 370, the U.N. held its first discussion on Kashmir in decades, albeit behind closed doors, where the U.N. Secretary-General had called for “restraint” from India and Pakistan. Ms. Baerbock’s comments on the U.N. role, made twice this year, have hence raised concerns and met with objections from New Delhi.
