So that's it then. Riyaz Naikoo, top Hizbul Mujahideen commander in Kashmir, finally killed by Indian forces. Total 2 bodies recovered from the encounter site, as per officials. Like I said, I had a feeling this might be the end of the line for Naikoo.

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) bid to stop the road construction activities has led to a standoff, with sources saying that an extensive road network has already been established by China on the other side of the border.
New Delhi: India is believed to have rushed in additional troops to the River Galwan flashpoint in Ladakh and constructed defensive positions after China upped its military presence in the region.

The moves follow report in a Beijing mouthpiece that PLA border troops have strengthened “on-the spot response” and Chinese experts were quoted as saying that “if India exaggerates the friction, it could pay a heavy price.” Sources said several hundred soldiers from each side have been deployed as the Galwan standoff entered its second week.

Top-level engagement has been held to resolve the crisis. The Chinese side has over 80 tents and has made temporary defensive positions, with reports coming in that fast response reinforcements have also been moved closer to the Galwan river.

Sources said China’s aggressive deployment has been responded to by the Indian side with soldiers being sent from other areas as well. The strict Covid- 19 protocols are said to have been kept in abeyance as the situation has escalated.

There have been no comments from the Army on the issue. First reported by ET, the Galwan standoff, which started on May 5, has now triggered a reaction in China as well, with the ruling party’s mouthpiece Global Times saying that it has “harmed military relations between the two countries”. The mouthpiece has accused the Indian side of “purposefully instigated conflicts”.

In an article on Monday, Global Times quoted sources close to the Chinese military as saying that troops have “made the necessary moves and enhanced control measures” at Galwan.

Titled “Chinese troops tighten control in Galwan Valley after India trespasses Chinese territory”, the article says India has built defensive fortifications and obstacles to “unilaterally change the current border control situation”.

It also said that tensions are at the highest since the 2017 confrontation at Dokalam. Sources said the Chinese moves have come after a road was being constructed by India to carry out patrols in the area that would also be useful for the local population.

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) bid to stop the road construction activities has led to a standoff, with sources saying that an extensive road network has already been established by China on the other side of the border.

While most such standoffs are shortlived and get resolved after mild pushing and shoving by troops, the Galwan standoff turned ugly after scores of soldiers were injured when the Chinese side tried to use excessive force to push back an Indian detachment on the spot in early May.

The standoff has an uncanny resemblance to the Dokalam standoff in 2017, when Indian troops moved into the plateau to stop a Chinese road construction project near the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction. This triggered a large build-up of forces from both sides before top-level consultations were carried out to resolve the matter.

Can Kashmir Conflict Drive India, Pakistan Towards A Nuclear War? India says that Pakistan made the highest number of ceasefire violations in Jammu and Kashmir – over 3200 times or an average of nine times a day. | EurAsian Times:

Article has strict no c/p or screen shot in place, but the conclusion seemed to be that although India has 1.3 million troops,
which is 4 txs that of Pakistan, Paki's nuclear capabilities will seemingly hold the spectre of NW between the two at bay.
The author/authors further conclude that such a war is neither imminent, nor likely, at this time.

hmm. Is that for real, or just one of those now that they have made the claim, you know war is going to fire up by nightfall cause that's how it works kind of things? I dunno. :hmm:

WHO map shows parts of Ladakh as Chinese territory

DIPANJAN ROY CHAUDHURY
ET Bureau | Updated: Apr 29, 2020, 03.03 PM IST
WHO map shows parts of Ladakh as Chinese territory

Agencies
New Delhi: The World Health Organisation (WHO), which is facing accusation of delaying declaring coronavirus a pandemic allegedly at Beijing’s behest, seems to have floundered on the depiction of China’s map on its website.

Parts of Ladakh (Aksai-Chin) in the China section of the WHO website has been shown as part of Chinese territory with a dotted line and colour code. Also, Jammu & Kashmir and the rest of India are depicted in different colours. A part of J&K — Pakistan occupied Kashmir — is marked with a dotted line, suggesting it as a “disputed territory”.

Many UN maps show parts of Kashmir as “disputed”, but this is probably the first time J&K and Ladakh are shown in different colours than the rest of India in the map of a UN body. ET has learnt that India has formally raised the matter with concerned UN authorities and awaiting response.

The map of India depicted by WHO differs from the standard depiction even of the United Nations itself, by not showing parts of J&K which are under actual control of India as a part of our country,” Gautam Bambawale, India’s former envoy to China, Pakistan and Bhutan, told ET. “WHO’s depiction of J&K with a different colour wash from that of India is strange, incorrect and surprising.”

Pakistan had ceded part of PoK to China in the 1960s. China occupies around 37,000 sq km in Ladakh, bordering its Xinjiang province.

Earlier this month China included parts of Arunachal Pradesh within its international boundaries, according to an updated version issued by Sky Map, which is China's authority on digital maps.

The map of China, until now, was based on the 1989 edition of the Sky Map of its national borders, though Beijing has since solved its border issues with Russia and Central Asian countries.

However, as per a DW (German media) report in Chinese language, some users noticed that Sky Map had now updated the geographic information at the "county" level. "The county boundaries of some counties clearly transcend the red colour-marked 1989 edition of the national border, especially in Tibet area bordering Bhutan and India," the report said.

China has claimed its sovereignty over Tibet "counties bordering India and Bhutan from east to west”, it said. China calls Arunachal Pradesh as part of ‘South Tibet’.

Nepal parliament approves new map as land row with India escalates

Gopal Sharma
2 MIN READ

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - The lower house of Nepal’s parliament on Saturday approved a new map of the country, including areas disputed with India, the speaker of the national legislature said.

The move signals a hardening of Nepal’s position over a decades-long border row that has strained ties between the South Asian neighbours.

India’s foreign ministry rejected Nepal’s new map, arguing that the addition of Indian territory is not based on historical fact or evidence.

“It is also violative of our current understanding to hold talks on outstanding boundary issues,” foreign ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava said in a statement.

Nepal published its revised map in May after India inaugurated a 80 km (50 miles) road connecting its northern Uttarakhand state with Lipulekh on the border with Tibet that passes through the land Nepal says belongs to it.

The map shows a sliver of land on the northwest tip of Nepal as the Nepali territory.

Agni Prasad Sapkota, Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives, said the new map was approved by 258 out of 275 members of parliament, exceeding the required two thirds majority. There were no votes against.

The map must also be passed by the National Assembly, the parliament’s upper chamber, and approved by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari before it becomes a part of the constitution.

In the capital city Kathmandu, dozens of people painted the new map on a street and lit candles on it in celebration of Saturday’s decision.

Standing outside parliament after the vote, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli held out the prospect of talks with India to resolve the dispute.

“It is a good thing that there is unity,” Oli told reporters. “Now there will be talks (with India).”

Singh talks tough as India moves tanks near border
India's Defence Minister boasts of 'national pride' and increased military strength in border stand-off with China
by Dave Makichuk June 15, 2020

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh came out firing on Sunday, vowing that India will never compromise on its “national pride” as it is no longer a “weak” country, while military sources confirmed the nation has moved main battle tanks (MBTs) closer to the Chinese border.
Singh, who strongly touted India’s increased military capability, also assured the Opposition that talks were in progress to resolve the border stand-off with China and that no one would be kept in the dark, The Indian Express reported.
Addressing a virtual rally in Jammu and Kashmir, Singh said: “I want to assure that we will not compromise with national pride under any circumstance. India is no longer a weak India. Our strength in national security has risen. But this strength is not meant to frighten anyone but to secure our country.”
Stating that military talks were underway, Singh said: “China has expressed the desire to resolve the issue through dialogue and our effort is to find a solution through talks at the military and diplomatic level.”
“We will not keep anybody in the dark. We will tell everything at an appropriate time to Parliament and to everybody,” he added while referring to the situation along the defacto border, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

According to Military Leaks, last month, an aggressive cross-border skirmish between Chinese and Indian forces resulted in minor injuries to troops at Pangong Tso lake, located in the Himalayan region of Ladakh.
The incident has been followed in recent weeks by unconfirmed reports of tensions in the mountainous area, though neither side has publicly acknowledged it.
The Indian Army has since deployed more tanks closer to the Chinese border in the Himalayas following conflict at Pangong Tso lake.
Both countries have mobilized thousands of troops, armoured vehicles and combat aircraft, Military Leaks reported. The T-90MS and T-72M1 tanks were transported to an unspecified location closer to the LAC, according to sources.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has held large-scale maneuvers featuring thousands of paratroopers and armored vehicles in the country’s high-altitude northwestern region.

These maneuvers were clearly organized to demonstrate to India the extent of China’s military capabilities in their border regions.
Tensions flare on a fairly regular basis between the two regional powers over their 3,500-kilometre (2,200-mile) frontier, which has never been properly demarcated, according to media outlet Al Jazeera.
But sources and Indian news reports suggest that despite the tough talk from officials, India appears to have effectively ceded to China areas that the PLA occupied in recent weeks, notably parts of the northern side of Pangong Tso lake and some of the strategically important Galwan river valley.
“The Chinese are refusing to move back from their newly captured positions both in Pangong and Galwan valley. They are consolidating the new status quo,” a senior Indian military officer stationed in the region told the AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.
According to BBC sources, Chinese forces have put up tents, dug trenches and moved heavy equipment several kilometres inside what had been regarded by India as its territory.

The move came after India built a road several hundred kilometres long connecting to a high-altitude forward air base which it reactivated in 2008.
Who is to blame? It appears competing strategic goals lie at the root, and both sides blame each other.
The traditionally peaceful Galwan River valley has now become a hotspot because it is where the LAC is closest to the new road India has built along the Shyok River, sources say.
India’s decision to ramp up infrastructure seems to have infuriated Beijing. The road could boost Delhi’s capability to move men and material rapidly in case of a conflict.

In what seems to be an intelligence failure, India seems to have been caught off guard again. According to Indian media accounts, the country’s soldiers were outnumbered and surrounded when China swiftly diverted men and machines from a military exercise to the border region.
This triggered alarm in Delhi — and India has limited room for manoeuvre. It can either seek to persuade Beijing to withdraw its troops through dialogue or try to remove them by force. Neither is an easy option.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan’s government has alleged that India is preparing to launch a “surgical [military] strike” on Pakistani soil and has called for the international community to help de-escalate the situation between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
Speaking to the press in the United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi on Friday, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi warned that Pakistan would retaliate if attacked.

“I have learned through our intelligence sources and they have picked up this information that India is planning a surgical strike against Pakistan,” said Qureshi.
“This is a serious development and I also have knowledge that they have tried to seek tacit approval from important players who they consider to be their partners.”
The two countries have fought three full-scale wars since gaining independence from the British in 1947, with tensions remaining high in the relationship in the intervening periods.
Both have been on a high state of military alert since a standoff in February 2019 that saw India bomb territory just inside Pakistan’s borders and Pakistan shoot down an Indian fighter jet.
Pakistan later returned the pilot of the downed fighter aircraft, helping to reduce the immediate tensions.
Foreign Minister Qureshi warned that Pakistan would strike back at India “a notch above” if attacked.
“I want to tell India very clearly that Pakistan is fully prepared to respond and to defeat their designs,” he said.
“We will do it effectively as we did respond immediately and effectively in February 2019. And we will respond effectively if they choose this path.”

India’s government did not offer any immediate comment on the allegations.
Pakistan’s national security adviser Moeed Yusuf said Pakistan had obtained “very specific and reliable intelligence” of the Indian plans to launch strikes.
“We remind the world that peace is a collective responsibility. The world must prevent India from destabilising the region in its attempt to divert attention from its domestic troubles,” said Yusuf.
The two countries frequently accuse each other of sponsoring armed groups or planning attacks against the other.
In September 2016, India claimed to have carried out a “surgical strike” on Pakistan-administered Kashmir to hit armed groups linked to an earlier attack on Indian security forces in Uri town in the Indian-administered Kashmir.
At the time, Pakistan denied Indian forces had ever entered Pakistan-controlled territory.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s military and the foreign ministry said Indian forces fired on and damaged a UN vehicle in Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Friday.
“[The] Indian Army resorted to unprovoked fire in Chirikot Sector of LOC [Line of Control]. Indian troops deliberately targeted a United Nations vehicle with [two] military observers on board,” the military said in a statement.
The military also released images purportedly showing a bullet hole and other damage on the vehicle.
The UN has so far not offered any comment on the incident.
‘Catastrophic consequences’
Last month, Pakistan shared an intelligence dossier with the international community which it said contained evidence of Indian sponsorship of armed groups operating on Pakistani soil.
While such allegations by both sides are common, the revelations were unprecedented in their specificity, including audio recordings and documents said to be tied to specific attacks, armed groups and armed groups’ leaders.
Qureshi said the international community had been made aware of the Pakistani intelligence.
“We have communicated this to important capitals,” he said. “We have shared the information that we have picked up with important capitals and they are fully aware of Indian designs and our resolve.”
He warned that any Indian attack on Pakistan could have “catastrophic consequences” and would “seriously undermine” the intra-Afghan peace process, which began in September and which Pakistan has been facilitating.
“In our opinion, Pakistan feels that if they undertake this misadventure, it will seriously undermine the Afghan peace process, which has moved forward and if things go wrong, India would be held responsible for this,” he said.
“I urge the global community to caution India to refrain and desist. And to not test Pakistan’s resolve.”Pakistan alleges India preparing for ‘surgical strike’

Two drones approached and dropped IEDs at the Indian Air Force base in Jammu. This is a first kind of attack that has occurred in India according to security sources

Pak Terror Group Lashkar or Jaish Could be Behind Jammu Airport Blasts, Intel Sources

J&K DGP Dilbag Singh told CNN-News18 there was “use of drone with payload in both the blasts at Jammu airfield suspected to drop the explosive material”.
The twin blasts triggered by a drone at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Jammu Airport early Sunday morning could be the handiwork of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba or Jaish-e-Mohammed, according to security agencies.
Two low-intensity improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were dropped from a drone at the IAF base in Jammu around 1:30am on Sunday. The blasts took place very close to the helicopter hangar but no serious damage was reported to any equipment. Two Indian Air Force personnel, however, sustained minor injuries while a building was partially damaged in the blasts.

J&K DGP Dilbag Singh while confirming the development to CNN-News18 said that there was a “use of drone with payload in both the blasts at Jammu airfield suspected to drop the explosive material”.
Intelligence sources have revealed that the Air Traffic Control (ATC) building and the parked Mi17 choppers were the targets of the bomb blasts but both got missed. One of the blasts, however, took place 100 metres away from the ATC.

Sources have also revealed that one of the drones was carrying 5kg TNT bomb while the other had a lesser payload. Experts from the bomb unit of National Security Guard (NSG) and other agencies are further investigating the nature of the bomb.

Earlier, Jaish-e-Mohammed in connivance with Hizbul Mujahideen had regularly received ammunition from drones via their handlers from across the border in Pakistan, especially in the Samba sector of Jammu & Kashmir. On specific intelligence inputs, Over Ground Workers (OGWs) have been arrested in the area as well.
However, this is the first time that a drone has been used to target a high-security strategic asset in the middle of Jammu.

Major Terror Attack Averted
J&K DGP Dilbag Singh further told CNN-News18 that, “There was another IED of 5/6 kg weight recovered by Jammu police. This IED was received by an LET outfit operative and was to be planted at some crowded place. A major terror attack has been averted with this recovery.”
“The suspect lifted is being interrogated. More suspects likely to be picked up in this foiled IED blast attempt. Police are also working on Jammu airfield blasts along with other agencies," he further said.

Govt sources have told CNN-News18 that this is not the first drone-related bomb blast carried out in Jammu & Kashmir.
Last year, on December 20, a mysterious blast had taken place near a Temple of Jhandi village in Kathua district. Security agencies probing the blast had suspected that a drone from across the border in Pakistan caused a blast using an IED.
“The nearest international border is about 13-14 km from the Jammu Air Force Base. NIA is currently assisting with the probe led by Jammu & Kashmir Police. Movement of Jaish Over Ground Workers (OGWs) in the area has been noted in regular intervals. This incident is of very serious nature," National Investigation Agency (NIA) sources revealed to CNN-News18.

The IAF in a statement posted on Twitter had earlier said, “Two low-intensity explosions were reported early Sunday morning in the technical area of Jammu Air Force Station. One caused minor damage to the roof of a building while the other exploded in an open area.”
“There was no damage to any equipment. Investigation is in progress along with civil agencies," the statement further read.

Intel About The Use of Drones by Pakistan
CNN-News18 has also obtained a copy of Intel input from May 2020 indicating that Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) was preparing drones which could carry grenades or IED for their Hizbul Mujahideen Cadres in Jammu & Kashmir.

The Intel note suggests about a meeting held two days ahead of Ramzan (2020) in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) where it was decided to use drone prepared by Lashkar-e-Taiba, for Hizbul Mujahideen cadre in Kashmir.
“This drone will be capable of carrying 5kgs IED up to a distance of 3 km from the controller, and the controller will be able to bring it down and blast it,” the Intel input indicates.
“The meeting which was attended by Zaki-Ur-Rehman, Hamza Adnan, Mossa Bhai, Syed Salahuddin, Khalid Saifullah Sahib, Tahir Aijaz Sahib, apart from Naib Amir of Hizbul, decided that the drone would be provided to Valley cadre as soon as possible,” the note also mentions.

The twin blasts come days after the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) plenary ended in Paris where Pakistan was unable to convince the global anti-money laundering watchdog that it had been able to act against terror financing. Pakistan for now remains in the critical Grey List of FATF amidst several domestic economic challenges.
Sources indicate that the blasts could also well have been in response to a recent blast that happened in Lahore, Pakistan, outside the residence of globally designated terrorist Hafiz Saeed, who is also the mastermind of Mumbai 26/11 attacks. The Lahore blast injured more than 22 and killed three, including one from the personal security of Hafiz Saeed. Pakistan Police had blamed ‘hostile agencies’ for the blast.

Suspected rebels kill five soldiers in Kashmir: Indian army
Tensions rise in recent weeks with a spate of shootings of civilians in attacks claimed by an anti-India rebel group.

11 Oct 2021

Suspected rebels have shot dead five soldiers in Indian-administered Kashmir in the deadliest incident since February, an Indian army spokesman says.

“One JCO (junior commissioned officer) and four soldiers were killed during a search operation probably by infiltrators… The operation is ongoing,” Colonel Devender Anand said on Monday.

The shootings occurred in a mountain pass near the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed Himalayan territory between India and Pakistan.
The shootings were the deadliest attack on military forces in the area since a ceasefire between India and Pakistan along the de facto border was announced in February.
The Kashmir region in its entirety is claimed by both India and Pakistan, who have administered parts of it since their independence in 1947.
For more than three decades, rebel groups have been fighting the Indian soldiers, demanding either independence for Kashmir or its merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan.
Tens of thousands of civilians, soldiers and rebels have died in the fighting. India accuses Pakistan of supporting the rebels, but Islamabad denies the allegations.
The region has been subjected to a legislative blitz since August 2019, with tensions soaring after New Delhi scrapped Kashmir’s semi-autonomy, applying new laws and cancelling others.

Spate of killings
Tensions have been stoked again in recent weeks with a spate of shootings of civilians, including two teachers last week, in the area – attacks claimed by an anti-India rebel group.
Seven civilians were shot dead in six days last week, including two teachers on Thursday, sparking public outrage in Kashmir and across the country. Politicians from all sides have condemned the killings.

Nearly 500 residents suspected to have links with banned religious and rebel groups were detained across the disputed territory following the shootings, a senior police officer told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity on Sunday.
“No stone will be left unturned to find the killers,” the officer added.
A top anti-terrorism intelligence officer was sent by New Delhi to the region to head up the investigation.

Authorities say at least 29 civilians, including workers from pro-India political parties, have been shot dead in Indian-administered Kashmir so far this year.
Twenty-two of them were Muslims, officials added.
The two teachers, shot by gunmen at a government-run school, were from the Sikh and Hindu communities who are minorities in the Muslim-majority region.
A relatively new rebel group, The Resistance Front, has claimed responsibility and accused those killed of working for “occupier mercenary forces and occupier stooges”.
The statements, issued only in English, were circulated in several WhatsApp groups and could not be independently verified by Al Jazeera.
The killings have instilled fear among Indian-administered Kashmir’s minorities, with local media reporting that many were fleeing the region.
On Saturday, Human Rights Watch called for the alleged perpetrators as well as Indian security forces accused of abuses including harassment, torture and extrajudicial killings to be held accountable for their actions.
“Kashmiris are caught in unending violence from attacks by militants and abuses by government authorities and security forces,” HRW’s South Asia director Meenakshi Ganguly said in a statement.
