WASHINGTON — Among the men and women now serving on the front lines to protect the Nation's Capital is a Maryland National Guard member who saw combat in Afghanistan.

He also works as a police officer and has a wife and young son waiting for him to come home.

Years after fighting in the Middle East, his current deployment has him stationed at the US Capitol.

The shifts are long, the outside conditions are cold, and the overall experience of being there has been anything but pleasant.

"I just got off the phone with him and he said some of the young men that he’s with don’t have enough money to buy some extra gear they might have so they’re wearing three pairs of extra socks to keep their feet warm," his mother said on Wednesday. "He went online today to order some more gear from Amazon that he’s going to have delivered to my nephew who lives in DC and then my nephew is going to walk over some of the stuff.”

The guardsman's mother asked WUSA9 not to broadcast their last names due to the sensitive nature of her son's deployment.

However, after hearing about the conditions her son is living in now, she wanted to let others know about the experience facing the men and women working to keep DC secure.

After her son deployed last Thursday, she said he and other Guardsmen have been forced to use trash bags and armor for pillows and blankets.

The servicemembers aren't allowed to drink coffee "because of the optics," according to her son.

No laundry service is available after her son brought enough clothing for two days, the mother claimed.

By the time dinner rolls around, the guardsman's mom said troops could be greeted with an unappetizing option.

"He gets cold food at about eight o’clock at night. He gets a box of cold food left out on the sidewalk for him. Cold spaghetti at eight o’clock," she said. "He feels like he really isn’t getting enough food, so he’s bought some of his own food. He’s gone to local convenience stores.”

"I can hear stress in his voice. He sounds tired," she said. "It hasn’t been a good deployment and he doesn’t feel like he has a defined mission.”

With the world still dealing with a pandemic, the concerns have also stretched to COVID-19.

Her son says troops often sleep close to one another at night, with some often taking their masks off.

"He said he’s not allowed to request a test unless he has obvious symptoms," she said.

After many photos of guardsmen sleeping on floors were posted to social media on Wednesday, the National Guard released a statement saying the photos likely showed the troops when they were considered on-duty.

"Please know our National Guardsmen have appropriate lodging for when they are off-duty; the photos circulating are of them on-duty, in a designated rest area between shifts," the statement read. "Being present is the first step in ensuring the safety of our citizens and our Nation's Capitol. Our security personnel work in shifts and rest when they can as others stand watch."

With many people reaching out about how they could help, the National Guard added that it cannot logistically accept donations of any kind.

Moving forward, the mother of the Maryland National Guard member who spoke to WUSA9 hoped her son's time on the front lines would be over soon.

"It’s hard and we’ll be thankful when all of our soldiers can come home," she said. "He said in many ways he felt he was better cared for by the army in Afghanistan than he feels he’s cared for now.”

Last I heard the Mayor refused to allow National Guard to stay at the local hotels.

The treatment they are getting is standard for what liberals think they should have.

Lastly, don't blame Trump for this as he no longer has 100% control as people are turning on him now that he is nearly out of office.

Coddled much? Based on mommy's statements in the article, I'd have to say 'yes'.

Lol, ever serve in the MDARNG? I have. It's very often hard to determine who the actual enemy is.

But hey, the flowers at Camp Fretterd look nice.
Thats an inside joke.
The Guard didn't have enough money to feed us, but they had enough money to plant flowers from one end of Camp Fretterd to the other. Very often the NCO's had to pass the hat to get money to put fuel in our vehicles, just to get around and do our job. But those flowers.....

If Biden manages to get into the White House they can expect much more of this kind of treatment. Hopefully this will make them VERY angry.

I imagine it will be like it was in the past before we were a nation.

The officers will be treated as Kings. Best food / best lodging (taken from populace) / best care / etc.
The rest will be given left overs. We will have more die from other causes than war during the next serious conflict.

Yeah. Lest by her critique she invoke "cancel culture", leave the family open to accusation of "not patriotic", have their fences ripped down and graffiti'ed, and she lose her job.

I find this believable.

The deep state cabal Wants the optics to feed to the lackies in the media of chaotic civil unrest. Having tired frustrated and armed National Guard on one side and antifa useful idiots with some neo nazi’s and some well meaning but thoughtless hotheads from the right sprinkled in on the other will help create their desire for Kent State 2.0 with the headlines and protest songs likely already written.

The follow-up would be the predictable request for UN forces to ‘help and assist’ in maintaining order and collecting all the newly outlawed firearms throughout the US.

Whether this fully plays out we shall see.

If you on this site have family and friends deployed, Send our best from the tb2k community, and Thank Them for Their Service.

Nothing sucks more than being in the military when democrats are in power and you are hated by the political leadership, overused, and abused all at the same time.

You're expecting quartering to come back? Most people don't know what the Third Amendment does, but there's likely a reason it was third on the list.

I do and that is why I mentioned it. Yes there was a bit of that during the War between the states, but the south was treated as an enemy nation for the most part.

I really expect all the old ills to come back and we fall apart as a nation. People want to flaunt their status and want the best status in life, so as the rules get weaker we will see more of this.

Just human nature.

i am torn here. that mom did come off kinda...well you know. her son may very well just be relating his frustration to her but knows very well this is the deal, but she could be taking this where it maybe would be better left alone.

it could be worse than she says. i don't know.

what i do know from my father (after years of stories of how the military is and knowing oodles of military people and growing up around them, and from how i was raised.....embrace the suck. it is what it is. but i also do see 20gauge's point about where this is. it isn't in war in another country. its in d.c. that's a little bit off.

I doubt it would be taken any better today than it was back then. And given the unlikelihood of door-to-door gun seizures, the distaste would likely be better acted upon. No three-star general wants the last words he ever hears to be "they'll never find your body".

Was regular and in a joint exercise with the Cali Guard. They introduced me to the term 'midnight acquisition'. They filled in their needs nicely. God helps those that help themselves.

There would if been a real insurrection if we were forbidden to drink coffee on deployment. I never drank coffee until I got in the Army. I blame that for a lifelong habit. Seeing top come around at 3:30 in the morning in a truck or CUCV with a couple of Mermites full of 80 weight Army coffee was the only thing we looked forward to because the powdered eggs and soggy toast wasn’t worth the trouble to throw it out.

Those guys have it good, compared to some of the places I slept back in 73-74. They're dry & have a roof over their head. Dirty socks, clean them & yourself in the restroom, bet the maid service cleans them, no latrine duty!

There is really only one or two things that worry me about this (otherwise it is kind of Mom getting a bit over-excited about her son's understandable but probably not intended for the public, venting - we all do that at times if we still are lucky enough to have loving and living parents).

The major one was the "not allowed to ask for COVID tests" depending on how sick they have to be before they can ask - they SHOULD as a matter of ROUTINE be at least taking rapid test samples of people - to not do so during a pandemic and not in an ACTUAL war zone is insane and could have some really dire results down the line.

The other was the cold food, on top of a cold deployment and some soldiers obviously not having enough warm clothing or gear (for whatever reason). That isn't because I think soldiers are fading flowers to coddle but because again medically, it just isn't a good idea unless there is absolutely no choice (aka survival training or actually on a battlefield).

Otherwise, they are likely to have troops coming down with all sorts of cold-related conditions from the annoying to the potentially deadly, not to mention that even without COVID the chances of severe colds, pneumonia, and even chest infections (that can put people in the hospital or at least off the duty list) is quite high.

Medical Science knows that HOT FOOD AND HOT DRINKS can got a long way towards keeping the body warm enough physically to help fight things off (and that would probably include COVID 19).

So stationary duty in the cold, improperly dressed, without hot liquids followed by cold foods twice a day (and possibly not enough of it) is just asking for a compromised and sickened military especially when a virus is running around.

If it were just a matter of being uncomfortable (like sleeping on the floor) well that's part of what goes with military life I'm afraid.

Again, I think Mom is mostly overreacting though if it does result in the troops getting improved equipment and access to proper food and liquids for the climate, then it may be worth the embarrassment this guy is going to have.
