ECON Hey Gang! Silver is Over $21!

When I first started buying gas it was 35 cents gallon
and back then often used silver quarters and dimes.
One of each now worth $4.40 and $1.76 respectively.

Gas hasn't gone up in value so much, that it costs more
today than back then, as has the value of our paper $
eroded and gone down, plus taxes. Cigs back then were
also 35 cents and case of 24 beers $4.05 incl tax. None
of them are better versions today that they should cost so
much more now than back then. It's mostly all about the $
that's lost buying power via inflation/theft of our currency.

People don't understand prices rising often says more about
their dollars value dropping. Someday, they'll be wanting to
quickly spend them, like hot potatoes, before they buy even
less tomorrow. That's when you see real hyperinflation start
to kick in...

when I started driving, gas was 19 cents a gallon. I could and did
fill my car
buy a pack of cigarettes
took a pretty girl to a movie
then to Jims Frontier Drive-Inn restaurant
- - - on a ten dollar bill and had change left over

This past Saturday I stopped by a place with antique/second hand rented-space shops. These type places are popular in my AO. I knew one seller had a display case of silver coins, and I was curious (as in Curious George, the one before the Mandela Effect took his tail away...but I stray from the topic at hand.)

The owner had circulated Mercury dimes for $1.40 each. He/She also had circulated Standing Liberty Quarters at $4.25 each.

I pulled up coinflation.com, a wonderful link, and decided I'd take them all. Here are the current melt values from today.

When I was a young girl in the early sixties, I had an uncanny fascination with Mercury dimes. I started with a penny collection (Dad was a stamp collector and encouraged me), but started tucking away the Mercuries when I got them in my allowance. I wished I'd kept all of them, but they're still my favorites to this day.

So was wondering if QM could spot the dollar also?
Cary: The Futures prices can differ a little from Spot, but if that's ok with you, it's hard to beat the simplicity of seeing everything, including the USD, in a single glance at this link:

Does that help?

If you're strictly interested in Spot, the home page of Kitco.com has everything you're looking for (though not all in one place).

Added: I think that the FINVIZ prices are delayed by 15 minutes. The screen automatically refreshes and works in (some of) the overnight markets.

Added: You can hover over or click on a tile to see charts. If you click, select one of these to set the resolution you prefer:

Yea I've always had a soft spot for Mercury Dimes, they look cool. Only thing prettier was Morgan Silver dollars

In the early 2000's I bought my one and only gold coin. On the back cover of the American Rifleman was an ad for gold coins (like often). I thought I should have a gold coin and I ordered one $10 gold piece. I think it was just over a hundred dollars. I still have it in its little plastic case.

My first was a 2 peso mexican gold coin that was little
less than 0.05 oz gold, paid $11 for it in the mid-60's.
I was 11 or 12. Just looked, sells for bit over $100 now.

Around 2:30 this morning there were several good deals on ebay for rolls of silver dimes below spot. Needless to say the sold out shortly.

Reminds me. There was a time in my life that if I had a dime I was rollin' in dough. Enough penny candy to last two maybe three days. Thanks for the memories. Oh, one more. Around 1960, my dad on a weekend would park in front of the Corner Store and send me in to buy a cigar. The owner saw dad sitting in the car out front so I'd get to buy him his cigar (a Wm Penn) for 5 cents. Did that a few times then worked up the courage to walk in there and buy my own cigar. Earned my own spending money doing kid jobs, so once in a while I would buy a White Owl for 10 cents. I had the means to spend big so I treated myself. I had simple tastes, only the best.

Look more closely. This is at the top of the melt value for coins: "Table based on December 20, 2019 close base metal prices." I don't know if they just aren't updating it anymore or if that text is wrong or what. I think the person who originally ran the site sold it and afterwards the links to stories changed significantly. It would be a major shame if they've stopped doing the melt value feature entirely.

Texas Precious Metals has ASEs in stock now, if you choose any year as an option:

Argh, I'm not quite ready yet!!
Wow $33.50 to buy, almost $8 over spot!

But, they're having to pay an extra $2.50
OVER spot to get any to sell them ASE's.

Scroll down to the second part about silver coin values. The first part is about US circulating coin values

As I recall after looking earlier today, Provident Metals was even higher.

The Cub

Behold, I am coming soon.
It has been reported....
that in 1913, you could buy a pair of middle of the road men's black leather shoes for $.41 (cents).

The same shoes today.....no diff. in quality....go for $125.

I recently noticed that my keyboard does not have a cents sign....never missed it.....what does that say?

So, is anybody still buying silver at this price if they can find it? Or do you wait for the next cratering in price before proceeding once again?

Prices are on a powerful uptrend, but pullbacks should be expected, though might be hard to time. Assume that premiums will jump when prices pull-back, particularly as availability falls.

Added: My advice is worth what you paid for it. Trust your own judgement.

If you are looking for oddball types of coins, bars or bullion, then yes. People are digging out the old stuff from storage. Some of it great for the artwork alone.

No. Last I bought was when the overnight repo trade blew up in Sept 2019.

Well **** it's going down now.

Paper silver is going down a bit. Have to keep in mind the paper price has little to do with the real thing as you can’t buy an ounce anywhere for the stated spot price quote. Some of the people playing with paper are doing some profit taking due to the quick run up. Other times when the market is taking a hit margin calls go out and paper gold/silver contracts are easy to liquidate.

Yes, as soon as I can. We'll hold it long-term and pass it down to our family if we don't need it for an emergency during a collapse situation.

Thanks you did a great job. Appreciate the extra work to accommodate me.

And I do understand that they vary even during the day, and maybe minutes, depending on how hot an item is. And it's not spooksville, just don't want any Indians sneaking up on me, so like to keep a watch out.

We like to keep some cash on hand, because it does buy stuff, especially emergency stuff like AC's for house or car, blown tires, etc. Bank holiday's for gas at the local country store.

But once it goes into runs, or hyper it's probably better to use the cash for something like bread, flour, etc. then before its totally worthless. Considering it's fabric though would make great fire starters.

'Course with Peso's being 22+ to the dollar we may go to Mexico after we get that next 1200.00 dollars. Live like kings, for a couple of years at least. LOL
