This is not good.

The Big Apple may have its first case of Ebola.
A 33-year-old Doctors Without Borders physician who treated Ebola patients in Guinea and returned to New York City 10 days ago was rushed in an ambulance with police escorts from his Harlem home to Bellevue Hospital on Thursday, sources said.
Craig Spencer was suffering from Ebola-like symptoms — a 103-degree fever and nausea, sources said.
Clad in hazmat suits, FDNY hazardous materials specials sealed off his fifth-floor apartment. Cops blocked off West 147th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam after he was taken to the hospital, witness Oscar Nunez said.
“EMS HAZ TAC Units transferred to Bellevue Hospital a patient who presented a fever and gastrointestinal symptoms,” the Health Department wrote in a statement.
Spencer had been working with Doctors Without Borders in Africa, treating Ebola patients in Guinea, sources said.

I bet the Ebola doctor knows when He has Ebola. He would not have ridden in an ambulance if he did not think he had Ebola! Sounds like the real thing!

I just hope he hasn't treated any patients since he returned from Guinea.

If he is positive this should be all it takes to show the airport checks don't work.

I was just watching this on Fox Business News and they said it seems likely that he has Ebola, and this is based on the doctor's own self-diagnosis (which I would consider quite reliable).

Good news is, he knew he was at high risk when he came into the country, and has been holed up in his own apartment ever since.

However...

I do wonder how someone could do that, without having provided in advance for adequate food stores.

The mid term elections are not until Nov. 4th.
Therefore, he will be diagnosed with the flu or stomach virus.

Statement from Bellevue Hospital:

Today, EMS HAZ TAC Units transferred to Bellevue Hospital a patient who presented a fever and gastrointestinal symptoms.
The patient is a health care worker who returned to the U.S. within the past 21 days from one of the three countries currently facing the outbreak of this virus.
The patient was transported by a specially trained HAZ TAC unit wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). After consulting with the hospital and the CDC, DOHMH has decided to conduct a test for the Ebola virus because of this patient’s recent travel history, pattern of symptoms, and past work. DOHMH and HHC are also evaluating the patient for other causes of illness, as these symptoms can also be consistent with salmonella, malaria, or the stomach flu.
Preliminary test results are expected in the next 12 hours.
Bellevue Hospital is designated for the isolation, identification and treatment of potential Ebola patients by the City and State. New York City is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of all New Yorkers.
As a further precaution, beginning today, the Health Department’s team of disease detectives immediately began to actively trace all of the patient’s contacts to identify anyone who may be at potential risk. The Health Department staff has established protocols to identify, notify, and, if necessary, quarantine any contacts of Ebola cases.
The Health Department is also working closely with HHC leadership, Bellevue’s clinical team and the New York State Department of Health to ensure that all staff caring for the patient do so while following the utmost safety guidelines and protocols.
Bellevue and the New York State Department of Health to ensure that all staff caring for the patient do so while following the utmost safety guidelines and protocols.
The chances of the average New Yorker contracting Ebola are extremely slim. Ebola is spread by directly touching the bodily fluids of an infected person. You cannot be infected simply by being near someone who has Ebola.

Not surprised if there is another one. I do not understand why they are not using the rapid test to identify people before they travel, there are several test types they could use, one takes only ten minutes and is Ebola specific using a chip device, the other one identifies there is some kind of infection and takes 2 hours. While hospitals are only allowed to use the one that has found to be very accurate, Ebola specific, in research, I would imagine that doctors without borders would qualify for one, too, and if they do not have it, the military said they did? Are they testing them and then sending them back home if they indicated an infection, with a wait and see if their immune systems fight it off, and if not, they are back in the states where they can receive the best treatment? It is probably wrong to think they might do something like that. Most people wouldn't want to deal with my brain's way of processing things, I keep most of my thought processes to myself so as not to scare people about all the possibilities. That is probably why I don't scare easy, my brain has already been there, done that. They still have huge gaps in their plans to keep us safe, that is for sure. They need to stop travel without necessity and mandatory testing to clear them first. Nothing else will contain this because of the incubation period.

Ambulances are no more equipped with PPE's than those Nurse's flimsy PPE's that took care of Duncan. Ambulances are not stocked with level 4 haz mat bio gear.

was he taking his temp twice daily? I wouldn't think spiking a 103 temp is something you would just wake up with. hopefully they are starting the tracing of contacts now and not waiting till last minute.

Yup! :D

Having those units sit and gather dust is a terrible waste.
At least take them into the field and run parallel tests...

From CNN - he did not self-quarantine:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/23/health/new-york-possible-ebola-case/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

A Doctors Without Borders physician who recently returned from West Africa was taken to a New York hospital for isolation and testing for the Ebola virus, a law enforcement official briefed on the matter told CNN.

The 33-year-old physician, employed at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, developed a fever, nausea, pain and fatigue Wednesday night and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan Thursday morning for isolation and testing, the official said.

The unidentified doctor returned from West Africa about 10 days ago, the official said.

Investigators are taking the case seriously because it appears the doctor didn't self-quarantine, the official said.

The official said he was out in public. Authorities are possibly going to quarantine his girlfriend, with whom he was spending time since his return from Africa.

A statement from the New York Health Department said preliminary test results are expected in the next 12 hours.

I've been wondering about this. We've been hearing all about the threat to nurses, but it seems to me that EMTs and Paramedics are on the front lines and equally, if not more, at threat in dealing with exposure to potential Ebola cases. I've never seen any of our local first responders show up to a call in anything other than the company issued uniform (t-shirt, pants and work boots), lots of exposed skin and entry points for the virus.

Rummer, that is what is making me angry, they know we are not equipped to handle this, and there is no way to be equipped without zero risk, or even minimum risk. I have neighbors, friends, family and associates in every aspect of emergency response and I know first hand they do not have the proper equipment, training, organization or protocols in place. These are people who already put their lives on the line for us every day with great risk, we are upping that by 1000 fold and it doesn't have to be that way. The risks can be contained over there because of the proximity and little access to international or even intranational travel due to geographic challenges. We know how to do this right, it is very hard for me to understand why Obama is refusing to listen to the experts and public on this? All of us get it. Why doesn't he? I know this question will elicit many possibilities, but where is Congress, where is the Military? I hate feeling like we are living under a dictatorship by a different name.

Here we go again.

It seems the Ebola virus affects the brain immediately, way before any symptoms. These ppl want to be out and about. Even after they know they are infected with Ebola, they want to Bolt. They have Ebola Dementia from the very first day they are exposed to the virus and it starts replicating like mad in their body.

FDA has not approved the rapid test PCR machine for diagnosing EVD, our FDA at work for who?? 'nuf said! This is the same machine that NG CST have specifically for this purpose of field testing for bio agents. Sorry don't have the link handy for the blurb on the test kit being deployed recently.

Just when you thought it was safe to assume that Ebola-in-America was fixed (one day into Ron Klain's tenure as Ebola Czar), NYPost reports some rather disquieting news. A New York City doctor - who returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea 10 days ago - has been rushed under police escort to Bellevue Hospital... He is being tested for Ebola. I think that's courtesy of the new spin doctor in Obola's White House.

Found this comment at Zero Hedge. Cracked me up.

This is getting ridiculous. The guy had to know. Imagine coming back from treating ebola patients and your friends ask you how it was?

"Oh it was great, I have a fever now but it's probably nothing."

A mild case of ebola....that's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

I swear I jumped off the couch and screamed at the moron. Hubby said 'UT OH. Don't break the TV'. That statement has my eyes shooting bullets lying like that. Mild case my left butt cheek.
