We're supposed to get more severe thunderstorms tonight, my city is warning we may lose power again... so if you don't hear from me that's why. I'll be glad when our generator is back and working again.

A new smartphone for me because my iPhone 5 is now classified as an idiot phone.
A battery-operated, a large one, fan... got a small one at Walmart last night but want a larger one for the bedroom.
Battery backups for the CPAP machines, etc.
Battery operated radio since my old boom box died.

just ordered a battery-operated and/or hand-cranked operated radio from Amazon that also has a NOAA radio in the unit, supposed to be here on Sunday. Now to find battery backups for our cpap machines and a new to us generator.

I'm watching that line of storms. I've heard 3 different forecasts, so -- again -- the models aren't clear and anything might happen, like the storms moving more to the northeast and missing a lot of Central Iowa. In any case, tomorrow and the next few days will be much less humid! I'm looking forward to that.

Winds from last Monday's derecho have now been estimated at 140mph in Cedar Rapids... Thats on par with an EF-3 tornado and winds in a category 3 or 4 hurricane.

"STRAIGHT LINE WINDS ESTIMATED AROUND 140 MPH REMOVED THE ROOF OF AN APARTMENT COMPLEX, AND DESTROYED MOST EXTERIOR WALLS AND SOME INTERIOR WALLS."

Those winds also took down every single tree in my brother's yard. He's not done hauling limbs and brush out to the street because there's no more room for it.....he has to wait until the city picks up what's already piled there.

I wonder if he's heard that about the 140 MPH winds?

Here's a really informative graph by Iowa Mesonet. It shows the wind speeds with height at the 'Story County Tall Tower' north of Ames during the Derecho. Here's their summary of the event:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The featured chart is a preliminary plot of height profile horizontal wind speed from the ISU "Talltower" facility in Story County (north of Ames). This tower is outfitted with many sensors at various heights and records wind speeds at one second refresh intervals. The chart uses this one second data along with six sensors at various heights to construct a two dimensional analysis of horizontal wind speed during the passage of the most gusty portion of the derecho at that location. Please note that sampling winds at this time resolution more represents gusts than sustained winds. You can see lots of crazy things happen including an initial gust front that rocketed near surface winds to near 90 MPH (11:23 - 11:24 AM) to only subside for a brief moment before the most intense winds arrived. This plot indicates 90+ MPH gusts got very close to the surface with 120+ MPH gusts briefly recorded some 375 feet above ground level."

My brother in Cedar Rapids, Iowa finally got his power back on yesterday afternoon (Saturday 8-22-20).

I think the rest of his street was up earlier in the week, but the meter was torn off of his house by the wind storm, so he had to wait for an electrician to repair that damage and then for the power company to actually turn it back on.

He was without power for about two days short of two weeks. He lost every tree in his back yard and had a good deal of outbuilding and vehicle damage.

I have a lot of old college friends that live in or around CR and they've been showing photos on facebook, the damage is horrific, beyond horrific actually. One of my idiot friends keeps insisting it's HAARP that caused the damage.

Having lost power for 4 1/2 days...these items made conditions much more bearable:

After 2 days I recharged the RAV at my job.

I see they have an oscillating fan as well, OC might like that one better than the stationary fan. I have one battery operated fan and desk lamp so far and two of those power banks now, oh and a battery operated and also wind up able emergency radio. Learned a lot that week, a whole lot has changed from my childhood when storms would knock the power out.
