WEATHER DERECHO - Significant Thunderstorm Wind Threat This Afternoon for Southern WI and Northern/Central Illinois

Found out this evening that my granddaughter, attending college in Cedar Falls, Iowa survived the storms as they went east through the state. The city is devastated. No power. Many many large trees down, roofs gone, and large trucks and motor homes blown over. City looks like a war zone. The winds were so strong that her locked apartment door with a chain latch blew open...broken door frame. It's a stinkin' liberal bastion of education in CF and I'm concerned for her safety there after this weather event.

Is she a prepper at all? Does she have tailgate supplies? (Grill, cooler . . . ) Does she have running water? If not, she probably better come home for awhile.

I went through a tornado, a blizzard, and major flooding when I was in college. I had camping skills and equipment, so it wasn't that big of a deal. Or maybe Michigan women in my generation were a little tougher.

No power here since 3:30 pm, but at least no damage.

It's ironic because I was planning a "no power" 24-hour drill next week to test my new preps. I didn't get around to cooking with my new single burner duel fuel stove, but I tried out the lanterns, the back up computer system, the back up DVD player, and the fans. All worked as expected. I did decide to buy a few more D cell batteries for the fans.

Lots of people still without power in Chicago area. They're getting mad too.

Are they going to use that as an excuse to loot?

Half of Des Moines was without power at one point today. Neighbors were helping neighbors clear streets, drag branches to the curb, or repair damage to homes. No looting or rioting! Okay, maybe there were some drivers not taking turns getting through intersections with non-working traffic lights and maybe tempers got a little short at what drive-thrus were open. Still, no looting or rioting.

I give up.

I don't know. The ones I've seen seem to be from white people. One woman wants to know if the power company is going to reimburse her for all her spoiled food (8 hours so far for her).

Massive "derecho" devastates US corn crop, with tens of millions of acres of corn affected. As well, many grain silos and elevators were destroyed, and with them tons of "on farm storage" -- what remains of the US Strategic Grain Reserve. Yields will be reduced for ALL of those acres, particularly where damage was severe or irrigation was destroyed. R/T 8:39

Didn't some one here have a dream where the corn was the best in 75 years and was destroyed before harvest

Maybe over in Waterloo, but CF is mostly white, upper-class kids. They might smoke a little weed or drink a little too much after games, but they aren't known for looting or rioting.
You're probably right Meemur. Yet there was a teacher there about two years ago that under heavy statewide pressure was fired for often calling for the killing and decapitation of conservatives. Stats came in this morning that Cedar Falls had winds clocked at 112 mph.

This pounded Des Moines yesterday afternoon. Sadly I drove through it on the way to Omaha. We were blessed, trees and power lines down all over the neighborhood but ours stood true. We went out to the marina after is all passed because the power was out and our boat makes it's own, figured I might see her sitting on the bottom. Nope! She stood true and strong! Blessed. But for the 6 sailboats on the hard they were selling, they are not on the hard anymore..lol.

Oh! And around 10 houseboats that were on the hook broke loose and were just floating away. It was a bright, calm day, and then it wasn't...that was harsh.

This too shall pass.
Just chatted with my sister in Wyoming. Her daughter and son-in-law live just outside of Marshaltown, IA. My niece hid in their basement during the wind event, heard trees falling at the neighbor's place but no damage to their house. The family-owned farm where they lived until recently also had a bunch of trees down, but none hit the house. Nephew-in-law was at work; the employees huddled in interior rooms. Several holes in the roof of their building, he's working from home today. His grandparents were at a dialysis place and had to stay there several hours until the roads could be cleared so they could get home. On their way home, they took this picture: Damage from Derecho wind near Marshaltown Iowa August 10 2020 (2).jpg

The main thing is running water. If she doesn't have it, it's time to relocate for a bit. The communists in CF and Iowa City have large mouths but are cowards when push comes to shove. They can be avoided. I lived around some people like that in Columbus. They were the first to leave our neighborhood when Hurricane Ike went through and took out our power.

The houseboats in Saylorville came through OK for the most part. The boats that weren't in the water suffered more damage, I think. A neighbor's fishing boat at the side of the driveway got filled up with limbs, but it'll be OK.

I'll take straight-line winds over the smallest tornado any day!

Just to let you guys know that are without power help is on the way. Must have passed 200 utility trucks heading west bound on 80. Started seeing them around 2pm at the pa line.
Noticed alot of Alabama power must have been in NJ or NY from the prior storm, rt 80 is not the normal way to get from Alabama.

Neither here nor there.
I don’t have time to read this thread, we going into day three with no power. So glad I listened to the member here that talked me out of buying the jackery... that’s extreme sarcasm btw. Most of town has the power back on and from what I’m reading it may be Friday of next week before it’s back on in our part of town. OC is taking our Honda generator in in the morning to see about getting it to work again. Pray we get something figured out and soon I don’t think I can handle more than one or two more nights without my cpap machine, otherwise I may need to find someplace to stay that has power.

I’ll post again when I either have power or manage to get out to a WiFi spot again, oh and our chainsaw no longer works and there are no replacement parts for it.
