The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 32% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -9 (see trends).

It appears that the passage of health care legislation has significantly increased enthusiasm for the President among Democrats. Overall, the number of voters who Strongly Approve of Obama’s performance has moved to the highest level in many months. This is consistent with a sharp increase in the number of Democrats who say the country is moving in the right direction.

However, that increased enthusiasm has come at a cost among unaffiliated voters. Among those not affiliated with either major party, just 23% Strongly Approve of the President’s performance while 48% Strongly Disapprove (see other recent demographic highlights).

Also, on the health care issue itself, 53% of voters now trust Republicans more than Democrats. That represents a big bounce for the GOP over the past month. The latest weekly tracking of the issue shows that 54% favor repeal of the President’s health care plan.

Republicans also currently enjoy a double digit advantage over the Democrats when it comes to the nation’s top issue—the economy.

Seventy-two percent (72%) of voters favor offshore oil drilling. Most (59%) want the President to go further and allow drilling off the coasts of California and New England.

The Rasmussen Reports Media Meter shows that most coverage of President Barack Obama has been positive over the past seven days. However, it is less positive than the week before.

On other matters, 51% of Americans consider Easter one of the nation’s most important holidays. Also, a plurality of basketball fans expect Duke to win the NCAA championship this year but Butler has the most fan support.

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates are also available on Twitter and Facebook.

Overall, 46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Fifty-three percent (53%) disapprove. To get a sense of longer-term trends, check out our month-by-month review of the President’s numbers.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows that 34% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -7. These are the President’s best ratings since February 1.

On major issues, 48% of voters say that the average Tea Party member is closer to their views than President Barack Obama. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 44% hold the opposite view and believe the president’s views are closer to their own.

Since the passage of the health care plan, enthusiasm for the President has increased markedly among Democrats. That is reflected in the growing number of voters who Strongly Approve of his performance. However, the passage of health care legislation has had little or no impact on support from Republican and unaffiliated voters. That’s why the number who Strongly Disapprove has remained over 40% for months. It’s also why 53% of voters now trust Republicans more than Democrats on the health care issue.

Friday’s report on job creation has provided a boost in both consumer and investor confidence. Confidence is now back to where it was when Lehman Brothers collapsed in the fall of 2008. Since release of the employment data, the number of unaffiliated voters who Strongly Approve of the President’s performance has increased from 20% to 27%. Forty-five percent (45%) of unaffiliateds still Strongly Disapprove.

Last week, 54% favored repeal of the President’s health care plan. Those numbers will be updated at 10:30 a.m. Eastern today.

Fifty-four percent (54%) of voters nationwide favor repeal of the recently passed health care law. The issue is having an impact early in the election 2010 season. Harry Reid is struggling in Nevada, a state where 62% of voters favor repeal. In Kentucky, 65% support repeal and Republican candidates have a big edge in that open seat race.

The Rasmussen Reports Media Meter shows that coverage of President Barack Obama has been 54% positive over the past seven days. However, positive coverage peaked in the weak following passage of the health care bill and it has been declining since.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 28% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -14.

The President’s Approval Index ratings bounced following last Friday’s jobs report which showed the highest level of job creation in three years. However, that bounce appears to have faded-- especially among unaffiliated voters. A similar pattern was found in our separate polling on consumer and investor confidence. Confidence spiked in the days following the jobs report but has since retreated back to the levels found last week.

Media coverage of the President has become less positive over the past week. The Rasmussen Reports Media Meter shows that just 50.2% of the coverage of President Barack Obama has been positive over the past seven days. That’s down ten percentage points since positive coverage peaked following passage of the health care legislation.

On the Generic Congressional Ballot, Republicans are preferred by 47% of voters while Democrats earn support from 38%.

It is now clear that the Democrats succeeded in energizing their base by passing the President’s proposed health care reform. Since passage of that legislation, the number who Strongly Approve of Obama’s performance has stayed between 28% and 34%. For months prior to passage, the number who Strongly Approved generally stayed between 22% and 27%.

While the Democratic base has been energized, there has been little or no change in views of the President among Republicans and unaffiliated voters. The number of voters who Strongly Disapprove of the President has remained consistently above 40% both before and after passage of the health care law.

Ever since the health care bill was passed, a majority of voters have wanted to repeal it. New weekly tracking numbers on support for repeal will be released today at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.

Forty-seven percent (47%) of voters believe repeal of the health care bill will be good for the economy while just 33% believe it will be bad.

Most voters believe that tax cuts are good for the economy and tax hikes are bad. It's been a year since the Tea Party movement began and Rasmussen Reports has provided a brief profile of Tea Party Members. Most voters believe the new health care law will lead to higher middle class taxes. That's one reason most voters support repeal of that law.

Skepticism is the word of the day. Most Americans lack confidence in the stability of the banking system, most doubt that they will receive their promised Social Security benefits, and most believe there is significant disagreement within the scientific community about Global Warming.

President Obama has indicated that an immigration reform debate will be brought to Congress soon. In Arizona, 70% favor new legislation giving police the legal authority to stop and check the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. Interesting thread and it's given me an idea... Since this is daily polls, I'm going to see if they fluctuate with what Obama does on a daily basis. Make a national speech, check the polls here the next day. Sign something new into law, check back in here.

I want to see how closely the poll tracks with what he does on a daily basis or if the variations are do to the people polled.

You mind me doing that on this thread Terri? It might not be but for a few days unless there are some really interesting correlations going on.

You mind me doing that on this thread Terri? It might not be but for a few days unless there are some really interesting correlations going on.

I don't mind at all! More contributions to the thread make it that much more interesting. Keep in mind that these daily polls are done on a three-day rolling average. So, if you want to correlate polling numbers to a specific event, it will take three days before 100% of the people in the poll will have seen or heard about any particular speech or thing that Obama does.

Thanks for telling me! I could have made a royal mess!

But this is a good daily thread and I'll see about quoting the rating in with the story and give the timeline. I might not be able to get in on every day given how my schedule goes but I'll make sure I don't miss a dramatic change or event.
