The Latest: Trump campaign manager: Trump skipping debate
January 26, 2016 7:27 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa

Here are the latest developments from the 2016 race for president, one week out from the Iowa caucuses. All times local.

6:20 p.m.

Donald Trump's campaign manager says Trump is skipping the next Republican debate.

The Republican candidates are set to square off in the Fox News debate Thursday night, their last debate before Monday's Iowa caucuses.

Trump previously had said he may not show up. But campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said during a Tuesday evening news conference in Marshalltown, Iowa, that the GOP front-runner "will not be participating in the Fox News debate Thursday."

Trump has criticized Fox News for "playing games" and for including anchor Megyn Kelly as a debate moderator. He says Kelly is a third-rate reporter who is bad at her job and shouldn't be allowed to participate.

Trump says he 'probably' won't take part in Fox's GOP debate
By Jonathan Easley
January 26, 2016, 06:40 pm; Updated at 6:59 p.m.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is ratcheting up his fight against Fox News, saying Tuesday that he’s likely to skip the network’s Thursday GOP debate in Iowa because he’s incensed over how they’re treating him.

Speaking at a press conference in Marshalltown, Iowa, Trump said he will “probably” follow through on his threat to sit out Thursday’s prime-time debate — the final debate before the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses.

“I’m going to be making a decision with Fox, but I probably won’t bother doing the debate,” Trump said.

He had initially threatened to pass because he didn’t believe anchor Megyn Kelly, who will moderate Thursday’s debate, would treat him fairly.

The two have been feuding since the first GOP debate in August, when she challenged him on his past statements that were derogatory towards women.

But Wednesday, Trump said the final straw was Fox News’ response to his threat to sit out the debate.

A network spokesperson mocked Trump to several media outlets, saying:

“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president — a nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”

Trump fumed over those remarks at the Tuesday press conference, calling it a “wise-guy press release” and accusing Fox and network chairman and CEO Roger Ailes of “playing games.”

“Most likely I’m not going to do the debate,” Trump said. “I didn’t like the fact that they sent out press releases toying, talking about Putin and playing games. I don’t know what games Roger Ailes is playing or what’s wrong over there. But when they sent out that press release talking about it – I said what are these people, playing games? So most likely I won’t be doing the debate.”

Trump said he had told Fox that he’d do the debate if they donated the proceeds to Wounded Warriors. Instead, he said he’ll hold his own event simultaneously with the debate that will raise money for the group.

“We’ll do something else where we raise money for the veterans and Wounded Warriors,” he said. “We’re going to do something simultaneously with the debate.”

Trump said he was putting Fox on notice that they can’t treat him like just another candidate.

“The point is with me, they’re dealing with somebody that’s a little bit different,” he said. “They can’t toy with me like they toy with everybody else, so let them have their debate and let’s see how they do with their ratings.”

BREAKING— DONALD TRUMP MAY SKIP FOX GOP DEBATE–

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuYA4-fphY8

Donald Trump joined Bret Baier tonight on Special Report to discuss his campaign and issues affecting Iowans.

In closing Baier told Trump he’s see him Thursday night at the debate.

Trump replied, “Let’s see… FOX is playing games.”

Bret Baier: I’ll see you Thursday night, right?

Donald Trump: We’ll be talking. Let’s see. I don’t, frankly, I don’t like the press releases FOX put out. It’s like they’re playing games.

UPDATE: Here is the snarky press release FOX put out earlier:
The Wrap reported:

“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president,” Fox News said in the statement, adding this gem: “A nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”

Wow! They clowned him!

Trump didn’t appreciate the press release…

Rush said this afternoon that Trump was likely creating a larger audience for Fox by building up suspense over his participation. Who knows at this point?

THE RIGHT SCOOP

This was somewhat of an awkward moment as Bret Baier from Fox News asked the Donald straight out if he was going to show up at their GOP debate.

Here’s his answer:

(click on the link above to see the video from tonight!)

He was pretty non-committal, meaning he could go either way.

Here’s the press statement he was whining about:
“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president — a nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”
They’re making fun of his going to ask his Twitter followers if he should go to the debate.

Well, what do you think? Is he going to show?

UPDATE!!!!!

Of course Trump does a press conference like 5 mins after this airs on Fox News and says he probably won’t do it.

Since her attack in the first debate, I don't watch the Kelly File even though I thought she was more tolerant of guests speaking than other Fox shows. I doubt if Trump is afraid of her but he may feel that she has some plan to ruin him before Iowa.

I don't think he's afraid of Megyn Kelly; I think he's pushing his weight around and going to use this as a campaign issue that he doesn't let the MSM push him around and that he knows how to negotiate. I think he will walk away if they don't capitulate. And their ratings will TANK. I know I won't watch if he's not there and I'm sure there are plenty of others who won't either. Should be interesting.

BTW, there are rumors that this is a definite at this point, but I couldn't find links so only went with what I had so far. I think the press release was the last straw. Fox is afraid of losing him and it's showing. I think he has the upper hand at this point. Supposedly he's doing a benefit for the Wounded Warriors instead, will keep looking for a real link.

He'll be there. He wouldn't miss being on stage for anything. This is one of his tactics to get people to watch FOX and the debate. It's all about ratings with Trump. He'll be bragging about the polls the next day.

Nope. Campaign Manager just said he will NOT attend. Lou Dobbs just broke the news about 5 minutes ago.

At this point I don't think he'll show up unless Megyn Kelly is gone. I don't think he plays games. If he says he'd not going to be there if she is, he won't be there if she is.

This is not about Megyn Kelly - this is about him not being pushed around. And he'll frame it that way over the next few days. Fox loses, I don't know if Trump loses at this point - it depends on how he frames it. All of his opponents (dem and repub) will have a field day with this - he gave them the ammunition - but he's way smarter than them and I think he gave them the ammunition to shoot themselves, not him... fwiw.

Thank you for the update. I saw that he wouldn't be there when I started the thread but couldn't find a link so went with what was the most recent article, hoping to update the title when it was confirmed. Still don't have a link but I'm guessing there will be a written story very soon to match the tv updates.

We shall see. If true, Megyn will use the opportunity to call Trump a sexist and that he's afraid of women. This will be spun by the left. There's a lot of people who like Megyn Kelly, all Trump has to do is refuse to answer the question and put her on the spot. He's good at doing that.

Trump will ‘definitely not’ participate in Fox debate, campaign says
By Ed O'Keefe and Philip Rucker January 26 at 7:10 PM

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says he will not attend a debate scheduled for Thursday night in Des Moines, an unexpected twist just days before voters here launch the election process.

"I probably won't be doing the debate. I'm going to have something else in Iowa," he said during a press conference in a high school workout room on Tuesday afternoon.

After the press conference, Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski confirmed to The Washington Post that Trump would "definitely not" participate in Thursday's Fox News debate.

“He’s definitely not participating in the Fox News debate," Lewandowski said. "His word is his bond."

He said Trump would remain in Iowa as planned and would instead host an event in the state to raise money for wounded warriors and other veterans groups.

Trump has made such threats before, but he said that the Fox News Channel, which is hosting the debate Thursday night, had gone too far by issuing press statements on Tuesday that he said kicked his concern about Megyn Kelly, one of the debate co-moderators.

"They're dealing with someone who's a little bit different. They can't toy with me like they toy with everybody else," he added.

When Trump saw the press release from Fox, "I said, 'Bye bye,'" he said.

Trump said his event on Thursday will benefit military veterans and service members wounded in war.

Although Trump said there had been too many Republican debates, Lewandowki said the decision applied only to the Fox News debate and that he would be open to participating in future debates.

Earlier Tuesday, Fox News Channel President Roger Ailes told The Post that "Megyn Kelly is an excellent journalist, and the entire network stands behind her. She will absolutely be on the debate stage on Thursday night."

Later, the network poked fun at Trump in a satirical statement: "We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president. A nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings."

Trump's feud with Kelly began during the first debate in August, when she questioned him about disparaging remarks he has made about women with her opening question.

Trump is scheduled to appear later Tuesday in Iowa City. On Wednesday, he is scheduled to travel to Lexington, S.C., for a rally before returning to Iowa for Thursday night's GOP debate in Des Moines.

The news media has brought this on themselves. Once candidates figure out that they can walk away from the debates, the pundits etc. no longer have the opportunity to skewer the candidates with meaningless and insulting questions.

Now Sen. Rand Paul will be returning to the debates.
It's like a tag team match with no one on the same team.
What will Mr. Trump be doing while the 'debate' is on?
It resolves a delimma for me. I stopped watching Fox news after the first debacle.
If Mr. Trump would have been at this debate, I would have watched it but felt dirty.
Problem solved.

Exactly!

he's starting a mini-revolution of his own and he is going to forever change the way elections happen from here on out.

Don't forget: at the first debate, the (same) moderators were planning on getting him mad on stage to a state that he'd 'act out' and were then planning on telling him he's 'fired' and escorting him OFF THE STAGE with armed guards. that was THEIR plan for the first debate. So they aren't so innocent here. He's just doing it first.

Also re-read the press release FOX put out, it's disgusting. I can't see them doing a press release like that for Hilary, Bernie or even 0bama. The press release crossed the line. Here it is again for those who missed it in the 2nd post of the thread:

“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president,” Fox News said in the statement, adding this gem: “A nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”

And FYI, I shall post the debate drinking rules, with or without Mr. Trump on Thursday evening. If he shows up, we may have to institute the dreaded:

DOUBLE SHOT RULE

where if he is there, all drinking penalties are doubled automatically.

Pray Jeb Bush doesn't remind us of his former offices too much. :spns:

I respectfully disagree.

You talk it, you walk it.

If you can't handle Fox News, you can't handle Vladimir Putin (who is winning in Syria, btw).

This is about manning up and growing a pair.

Eh, probably most people would agree there have been enough debates. No reasons for any more......

More unexpected ju-jitsu from Trump. He is writing a whole new manual for keeping the opposition off-balance while running for President.

It is a middle finger for the now discredited Fox Network. It will play well to his base and wonderfully with cross-over voters who have long despised Fox.
