Commercial Ship In Flames After Red Sea Missile Attack

Howard Altman

A commercial vessel is in flames in the Red Sea after being attacked by at least one missile fired from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen, two U.S. officials tell The War Zone.

The M/T Strinda was attacked by a missile coming out of a Houthi-controlled area in Yemen, two U.S. military officials told The War Zone. The vessel is battling a fire, the officials said. It was struck 60 miles north of the narrow Bab el-Mandab Strait, one of those officials told us. The Strinda is a Norwegian-owned chemical tanker, according to its owner, Mowinckel Chemical Tankers AS.
The Arliegh Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Mason responded to an emergency call and is now in sight of the Strinda, three officials told us. All three spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operational details.

This marks the second time in two weeks that the Mason has been involved in a situation involving missiles fired from Yemen. Nov. 27, two ballistic missiles fired from Yemen came down in the Red Sea in the vicinity of the destroyer USS Mason (DDG-87). At the time, the warship was concluding its response to a distress call from the M/V Central Park, a commercial vessel that had itself come under attack from a group of armed raiders that had attempted to board it.

The attack on the Strinda comes days after France said one of its frigates in the Red Sea downed two Houthi drones flying toward it.
And this is just the latest case of Houthi missiles hitting commercial vessels. As we previously reported, on Dec. 3, three missiles fired from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen struck three commercial ships in the Red Sea Sunday, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. The Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Carney responded to distress calls from two of those vessels and downed three drones approaching it.

On Saturday, in conjunction with the Army-Navy game, the Navy released a video supporting the sea service featuring vivid video of the Carney responding to Houthi attacks.
The Houthis have repeatedly attacked shipping in the Red Sea and launched missiles and drones at Israel. There have been several instances where U.S. Navy vessels have also had to shoot down Houthi drones and missiles. On Nov. 19, the Houthis staged a helicopter-borne raid on the Galaxy Leader, a Bahamian-flagged vehicle carrier transiting the Red Sea. The Houthis still hold the ship and its 25 crew members. A U.S. military official told The War Zone it is believed to be the first Houthi helicopter-borne raid on a ship. You can read more about these incidents and others involving the Houthis in our story here.

Speaking to reporters Monday hours before the latest attack, Air Force Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon's top spokesman, had no details to provide on a new international maritime effort to protect shipping there through the creation of a new task force.
“We continue to take this very seriously and we continue to consult with allies and partners around the world about a maritime task force, in order to address this,” Ryder said.
This is a developing story.

Update: 8:33 PM Eastern -
We received additional information about what struck the ship as well as the location of the attack. The Strinda was hit by a land-based cruise missile about 60 nautical miles north of the Bab el-Mandab. No one was injured in the attack and no U.S. vessels were near it when the attack occurred, a U.S. official tells us.
We also updated this story to change the designation of the ship to M/T.

CENTCOM Statement on missile attack in the Bab-el-Mandeb
At around 4 p.m. EST on December 11, the Motor Tanker STRINDA was attacked by what is assessed to have been an Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM) launched from a Houthi controlled area of Yemen while passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb. The STRINDA reported damage causing a fire on-board, but no casualties at this time. There were no US ships in the vicinity at the time of the attack, but the USS MASON responded to the M/T STRINDA's mayday call and is currently rendering assistance.

Looks like M/T Strinda is a Norwegian-flagged tanker, with a prior ETA to Suez of 15 December (last seen on AIS on 3 Dec). Involvement of a NATO-ally vessel could make things a bit more interesting.

Traffic in the Bab-el-Mandeb looks pretty normal for now, as far as I can tell.

Reminder: there's a PLA "support base" *right there*, and there has been a PLA naval task force operating in the region for many years.

The base was opened ostensibly to "support its patrols in waters off Somalia and Yemen".

So...when are we going to hear about PLA Navy vessels doing their part to defend international vessel traffic from the Houthi threat? I'm waiting...

BREAKING: YEMEN'S HOUTHIS HIT A NORWEGIAN SHIP WITH A MISSILE

Struck by a Houthi missile last night, the vessel is the latest target in escalating maritime attacks.

U.S. Navy responded, aiding the distressed ship amid these growing regional tensions.

The video below, which is going viral and being linked to this incident, is actually a missile launched in 2016 by the Houthis against a UAE vessel. There is no footage of the Norwegian ship as of yet.

This follows the attack on the USS Carney, a U.S. Navy warship, and commercial vessels by Yemen's Houthis in recent days.

Recently, the Houthis threatened to block all vessels heading to Israel.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly warned Biden: "You take care of the Houthis or I will."

US needs to pony up and hit these Houthi sites. The BS trying to put an international coalition together needs to stop. Houthi naval, air and missile sites need to be hit and hit hard. The Suez is a vital sea lane that cant be closed and if this crap continues marine insurers will shut it down.

F'em. Let them sink every ship that crosses. They obviously don't want to take on Iran. Ask the PLA to enforce. They want to be the Big dogs in the region. Let them play cop and negotiator.

Why, specifically, the US? Why not China, Russia, Japan, UK, Italy, France, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Egypt, etc.?

He will be sending another 6 billion to Iran while he's busy talking this situation to death. Talk is cheap. This situation demands strong action.

But for the innocents who are there, I’d agree. However, there are innocents there, so find another way…

There are "innocents" in every war that ever was or ever will be. You don't surrender to evil for the sake of potential death of "innocents". God will take care of them.

Iran-backed Houthis of Yemen on Tuesday warned cargo vessels in the Red Sea to refrain from sailing towards Israeli and Palestinian territories and to keep their radio communications on in order to quickly respond to Houthis' messages. It also warned cargo ships against "falsifying their identity" or raising flags different from the country belonging to cargo ship owner.

#BREAKING: Two missiles fired by #IRGCterrorists-backed #Houthis missed a commercial tanker Ardmore Encounter loaded with Indian-manufactured jet fuel. Another escalation as it was the first energy shipment targeted heading to the Suez Canal. 1/3
No immediate links to #Israel found either, so continues the pattern after the Strinda. USS Mason also shot down a suspected Houthi drone flying in its direction during the incident, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters. 2/3
The vessel was on its way from Mangalore, India, and had an armed security crew aboard it, according to data transmitted by the ship. Those guards apparently opened fire to drive off skiffs loaded with men trying to board the vessel, the private intelligence firm Ambrey said. 3/3

BREAKING: YEMEN’S HOUTHIS TARGET JET-FUEL TANKER IN RED SEA

UK reports that Houthi rebels launched missiles at the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, Ardmore Encounter.

The vessel, loaded with Indian-manufactured jet fuel, was heading towards Italy when it narrowly evaded the attack near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

This comes after yesterday’s missile strike on a Norwegian vessel and earlier assaults on the USS Carney heightening tensions in the Red Sea.

If Yemen won't or can't stop these Houthies, we sure as hell can. It behooves them to STOP this lest we turn
Yemen into RUBBLE!

Send a CHAMP or newer across the area.

The CHAMP is superior to other electronic warfare weapons because it destroys electronics, rather than jamming which temporarily affects systems that come back online when it stops being applied. Congress has suggested repurposing excess cruise missiles demilitarized under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty to turn them into CHAMP weapons without violating it.[7] On 14 May 2015, the Air Force nominated the Lockheed Martin JASSM-ER as the optimal air vehicle to carry the CHAMP payload.[8] CHAMP is capable of up to 100 shots per sortie.[9]

In May 2019, it was revealed the Air Force had deployed at least 20 CHAMP-equipped missiles.[10]

Successor[edit]

The AFRL and Office of Naval Research will conduct tests during summer 2022 of the High-Powered Joint Electromagnetic Non-Kinetic Strike Weapon (HiJENKS), a successor to the CHAMP using smaller and more rugged HPM technology that can be integrated on a wider range of carrier systems.[12]

Iran defense minister on US plan to establish a maritime task force in the Red Sea:

Nobody can maneuver in a region that we control.

There is no room in the region for further movements and conflict of force. If the US does such a stupid thing, it will face a lot of problems.

U.S. warns Yemen's Houthi rebels to stop attacks in Red Sea

Barak Ravid

The Biden administration has sent messages to the Houthi rebels in Yemen via several channels recently warning them to stop their attacks on ships in the Red Sea and against Israel, two U.S. officials said.
Why it matters: The Houthi attacks have created tensions in the region and are posing a growing threat to ships navigating one of the region's main commercial shipping routes.
Driving the news:
Since the Israel-Hamas war started, the Houthis have launched more than 70 drones and ballistic missiles towards Israel, which is more than 1,000 miles away from Yemen, the IDF said.
  • Almost all of the missiles and drones were intercepted by Israeli, U.S., French and Saudi air defense systems.
  • In recent weeks, the Houthis escalated their attacks and started targeting commercial ships in the vicinity of the Bab el-Mandeb strait in the Red Sea, which they claimed were owned by Israeli companies or were heading to Israel.
  • But most of the vessels that were attacked had a remote or no affiliation with Israel.
  • On Thursday, the Houthis conducted another attack on a ship owned by a Chinese company.
Behind the scenes: U.S. special envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking, who visited the Gulf in recent days, asked his counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar to convey warning messages to the Houthis, the officials said.
  • Lenderking stressed the U.S. is highly concerned about Houthi attacks that threaten freedom of navigation in international waters.
  • The U.S. officials said several countries in the region gave similar messages to the Houthis over the last two weeks and made clear Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea or against Israel over their territory are "unacceptable."
  • These warnings so far haven't led the Houthis to de-escalate their attacks, U.S. officials admit.
State of play: As a result of the attacks, the arrival of commercial ships to the port of Eilat in southern Israel has almost completely stopped.
  • Ships heading to Israel from Asia now take a route that circles Africa, making the journey three weeks longer and more expensive.
  • Over the past two weeks, ships headed to other ports outside Israel also started using the longer route to reach Europe in order not to be targeted.
The big picture: The U.S. is expected to announce on Friday that a special upgraded multinational task force will start operating in the Red Sea to deter the Houthis from further attacks and counter them, two Israeli and U.S. officials said.
  • The White House National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby said over the last week that the State Department and the Pentagon have been working on getting countries to contribute navy ships for the task force that will operate under the U.S. central command's naval forces.
  • A senior Israeli official said the task force is not going to escort ships in the Red Sea, but that the presence of more navy ships in the region will make it easier to respond to threats.
  • Houthi official Mohammed al-Bouhaithi told al-Mayadeen television network on Thursday that the Houthis will see any navy ship from the U.S. or other countries that are part of the task force as a legitimate target and threatened the Houthis could block the Bab el-Mandeb for all ships if the war in Gaza continues.
What to watch: The Israeli government has become increasingly concerned about the Houthi attacks with some officials saying it needs to respond militarily.
  • A senior Israeli official said the Israeli war cabinet decided against military action for the moment so that the Houthis and their Iranian backers aren't able to distract the IDF from the war in Gaza and create a wider conflict in the region.
  • White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stressed in his meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu and the members of the war cabinet on Thursday that the U.S. is committed to protecting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, U.S. officials said.
  • The Israeli government has agreed to see what effect the multinational maritime task force will have once it starts operating in the Red Sea and to not take any action of its own for now, Israeli officials said.
