Israel-Owned Ship Hijacked by Iran-Backed Houthis in ‘Grave Incident of Global Proportions’

Chris Harris

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have reportedly seized control of a cargo ship partially owned by an Israeli shipping magnate.
An Israel Defense Forces spokesman called the hijacking incident near Yemen in the southern Red Sea "a grave incident of global proportions."

Al Hadth reports the ship is called the Galaxy Leader, and sails under the Bahamian flag.
It is claimed that there are 22 crew members aboard, but that none are Israelis. All are said to be civilians.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office responded to the hijacking Sunday morning, blaming "Iranian terrorism" for the incident, calling it a leap forward in "Iran's aggression against the citizens of the free world."
The ship was bound for India and was seized after leaving Turkey.

The boat is owned by Israeli shipping magnate Abraham "Rami" Ungar of Ray Shipping Ltd.
The ship was being leased out to a Japanese shipping company.
The Houthi Movement is an Iran-backed, armed organization based out of Yemen that emerged in the 1990s as an opposition to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Vehicle carrier, not a huge ship (620'). Probably won't stir up too much attention. Suez max is about 1,300' x 250' IIRC. When the Iranians or their proxies start messing with VLCCs or ULCCs watch out, of course they're WAY to big for the Suez so the Houthis won't get a crack at them.

Bahamas-flagged vessel reportedly seized as it transited the Red Sea, with 22 crew on board

19 Nov 2023
News

Galaxy Leader is owned by Tel Aviv-based Ray Shipping, one of the largest providers of pure car and truck carriers

HOUTHI rebels have reportedly hijacked Bahamas-flagged Galaxy Leader (IMO: 9237307), a car carrier owned by Israeli shipowner Ray Shipping, as it transited the Red Sea on Saturday.

Yahya Sare’e, who is the spokesperson for the Yemeni armed forces, warned via social media platform X at 1400 GMT on November 19 that “Yemen reiterates the threat against Israeli vessels in the Red Sea”.

The 2002-built vessel’s last signal was at 1136 GMT on November 18, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence, with media reports there were 22 crew on board, none from Israel.

Galaxy Leader is owned by Tel Aviv-based Ray Shipping Ltd, which operates a fleet of 65 pure car and truck carriers, according to shipping databases and its website.

The beneficial owners are Rami Ungar and Yael Ungar. According to Lloyd’s List Intelligence, the company is the one of the world’s largest providers of car carrier tonnage.

The ISM and technical manager was listed as Stamco Ship Management Company Limited, in Greece, with the registered owner Galaxy Maritime Inc incorporated in the Isle of Man.

A call to Stamco’s office in Piraeus was not answered.

This is not the first time that vessels owned by Ray Shipping have been targeted while transiting the Middle East Gulf and Red Sea region.

Iran has attacked two Ray Shipping-owned vessels firing a missile at the Hyperion Ray (IMO: 9690559) on April 13, 2021, and was said to be responsible for an explosion to the Helios Ray (IMO: 9690547) on February 25 earlier that year.

The Houthi spokesperson said all ships connected to Israel would be attacked as a result of Israel’s actions in Gaza, and asked countries to withdraw nationals working on these vessels.

There have been some questions over a U.S. response to #IRGCterrorists-backed #Houthis' hijacking. But in the past, the U.S. only responded when American warships, like the USS Mason, were directly targeted by the Houthis in 2016. 1/2
Biden hasn't even responded to the Houthis downing a U.S. drone earlier in November, so I'm skeptical he will do so here. 2/2

A wash whether this was a straight-out act of piracy or an act of war. A pretty mixed, international tangle. Offhand, I'd say, fair game for anybody who wants to take them on and who has the skilled manpower in the region. (Hint hint).

At least that's how I foresee this eventually playing out. :shr: Who will get credit for the save? That's all politics and diplomacy after the fact.

MARITIME ENGLISH: AN INTRODUCTORY GUIDE

In an industry that boasts a strong international presence, it is essential to have a common language that everyone on board a vessel can understand and communicate in.

Maritime English, also known as Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP), is the lingua franca at sea so to speak, and is vitally important for a multitude of reasons; the safety of the crew, the efficiency of daily tasks and the integrity of the ship.

By having specific terms to follow, Maritime English rules out any confusion that would arise if normal terms that are used in day-to-day life were to be uttered. For instance, left and right can be rather ambiguous demands for direction, if the captain and a crew member are at different areas of the ship.

Maritime English’s main purpose is to serve as a manifestation of foundation English along with unique phrases to allow ship to ship communication, ship to shore communication and internal communications on board a vessel.

Here are some examples of Maritime English terms for positions on a boat:

It seems to me that Biden opened the door to this when he seized ships owned by private Russian citizens! Thanks Joe, another brilliant policy decision!
