The not yet fielded USN Constellation-class FFG is in this lane with the Hunter.

It has too few guns for assault drone swarms & it doesn't rock the radar w/enough long VLS cells to stop ASBM's that China is proliferating to world naval choke points via Iran.

And this new world requires the USN to field DD Tenders to forward reload it's surface combatants, complete with a new missile launch system that allows it to be done underway.

Port side is no longer safe from long range (1.200km) drone swarms.

There’s several different guided 57MM rounds being offered by different manufacturers. And the FFG should be able to carry over a thousand of them.

The U.S. is actively weighing options to strike Houthi targets in Yemen in response to its continuous attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group was moved to the Gulf of Aden to increase strike options per U.S. officials to POLITICO.

Strike options have been presented to commanders, but there is no word yet on timelines or approvals.

US weighs strike options to deter Houthis from more Red Sea attacks

The Biden administration has been reluctant to respond militarily against the Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in recent weeks for fear of provoking Iran.

Top Biden administration officials are actively weighing options to strike back at Houthis in Yemen after the Iran-backed group launched new attacks on naval and commercial ships in the Red Sea on Saturday, according to two U.S. officials.

The Pentagon has in recent days moved the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group from the Persian Gulf into the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Yemen, to support a potential U.S. response to attacks, said one of the officials, both of whom were granted anonymity to speak about sensitive plans. The military has also provided options to commanders to strike the Houthis, the official said.

The Biden administration has been reluctant to respond militarily against the Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in recent weeks for fear of provoking Iran, which backs Hamas and Hezbollah in Yemen as well as the Houthis. Previously, the Pentagon had recommended the administration not do so.

But a significant uptick in attacks in recent days could potentially lead top U.S. national security officials to change their calculus.

The destroyer USS Carney, operating in the Red Sea, shot down 14 one-way attack drones launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen early Saturday morning. Meanwhile, a British destroyer, the HMS Diamond, which had recently arrived in the region to help protect commercial shipping, also shot down a Houthi drone.

On Friday, a Houthi drone struck the Liberian-flagged Motor Vessel Al Jasrah in the Red Sea, causing a fire. The same day, Houthi forces also launched two ballistic missiles toward the Bab el-Mandeb strait, one of which struck the Liberian-flagged Motor Vessel Palatium 3. U.S. warships responded to the attacks at the time.

A Pentagon spokesperson declined to comment on ongoing operations.

The assault has had a significant impact on the commercial market. Maersk, the world’s biggest shipping company, on Friday halted all shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital passageway for cargo and energy shipments traveling between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The news comes as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. C.Q. Brown are set to travel to the Middle East this week. Austin is slated to huddle with leaders in Israel, Bahrain and Qatar; Brown will join Austin in Israel.

The Pentagon has bolstered its presence in the region, moving three additional destroyers into the Mediterranean Sea this week. The ships join the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group that has been operating in the Mediterranean since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, a deployment that Austin extended again this week.

Over the past week, missile-defense destroyers Laboon, Delbert D. Black and The Sullivans have arrived in the Mediterranean, POLITICO reported Saturday. US weighs strike options to deter Houthis from more Red Sea attacks

U.S. considers striking Yemeni group | Semafor

Jay Solomon

The Pentagon is deliberating whether to directly strike Houthi rebel military targets in Yemen in response to the Iranian-backed militia’s escalating attacks on military and commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

Biden administration officials told Semafor they’re increasingly concerned that the Houthis, and their sponsors in Tehran, are trying to undermine global maritime trade, both to undercut trade to Israel and to raise the costs to the U.S. and its allies for supporting the Jewish state’s now 11-week war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Already, some global shipping lines are diverting their cargo traffic away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal to routes circling the Horn of Africa, which significantly increases transit times and costs.

But U.S. officials say they’re weighing a strike on the Houthis against their fears of potentially fueling a broader war against Iran and its proxies. Biden administration officials have repeatedly said their priority is keep the Middle East conflict solely focused on backing Israel’s campaign to dislodge Hamas from its base in Gaza, though they haven’t ruled out more aggressive military operations. Iranian-backed militias have also launched dozens of attacks on U.S. military bases in Iraq and Syria over the past two months.

“As we’ve demonstrated in the past… our military will not hesitate to take action where we deem it necessary and appropriate, including to protect against actions in the maritime domain that could threaten our troops,” Pentagon spokesman Gen. Patrick Ryder said in Washington this week in reference to the Houthi attacks.

U.S. and allied forces have intercepted Houthi missiles and attack drones in recent weeks that the Pentagon believes were targeting Israel. The Yemeni army has vowed to militarily back Hamas following its October 7 attack on Israel. And the Houthis have widened their campaign to target commercial ships that the militia alleges were heading towards Israeli ports.

On Tuesday, the Houthis struck a Norwegian-flagged tanker, the Strinda, with a cruise missile. Last month, they seized a cargo ship allegedly partly owned by an Israeli businessman and took its 25-person crew captive. “If Gaza does not receive the food and medicine it needs, all ships in the Red Sea bound for Israeli ports, regardless of their nationality, will become a target for our armed forces,” Houthi spokesman Yehia Sareea told Yemeni television this week.

The U.S. has deployed two carrier strike groups to the Mideast since early October and has the assets to target Houthi missile batteries and radar systems inside Yemen. But so far, the Pentagon has stood down due to these fears of escalation, according to U.S. officials. The U.S. hasn’t directly attacked Houthi military positions in Yemen since 2016, when the Pentagon destroyed one of the militia’s coastal radar installations using Tomahawk missiles in response to attacks on U.S. naval ships.

The Pentagon’s deliberations on the Houthis are occurring as U.S. officials seek to widen the numbers of countries participating in a maritime coalition, called Combined Task Force 153, which is charged with policing the Middle East’s key waterways and choke points — including the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb strait.

Current circumstances also easily lean to the procurement of something along the lines of the proposed BMD/"Arsenal Ship" based upon the hull of the San Antonio Class LPD.

*If* the U.S. was going to strike the Houthis, I imagine you would see:

- Carrier strike group moving toward Yemen
- Amphibious ready group moving toward Yemen
- Senior U.S. officials meeting Middle East allies
- Forming an international coalition/task force

Guess what...

Not only do you have a SSGN in the region. You most likely have 2 SSBN's.
That is a lot of firepower. Add in bases in the ME. With bombers on stand by.
The Navy alone, could give a lot of hurt.

IMHO those TLAMs are better used against Iran proper. The Houthi are better addressed by BUFF. That begs the question as to the reasons why the Saudi/GCC air campaign was as "effective" as it was?

Yeah, the area is as much of a shooting gallery for today's weapons as the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. Those BMD ships should have been in the works years ago. Heck, they were talking about using LPD hulls for this role for literally decades and two ship classes ago.

U.S. Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin has Officially Announced today the beginning of “Operation Prosperity Guardian” in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which will involve a Multinational Maritime Coalition of at least 10 Countries including the United States,United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain who will address Security Challenges in the Region while ensuring Freedom of Navigation.

Statement from Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on Ensuring Freedom of Navigation
~2 minutes

The recent escalation in reckless Houthi attacks originating from Yemen threatens the free flow of commerce, endangers innocent mariners, and violates international law. The Red Sea is a critical waterway that has been essential to freedom of navigation and a major commercial corridor that facilitates international trade. Countries that seek to uphold the foundational principle of freedom of navigation must come together to tackle the challenge posed by this non-state actor launching ballistic missiles and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) at merchant vessels from many nations lawfully transiting international waters.

This is an international challenge that demands collective action. Therefore, today I am announcing the establishment of Operation Prosperity Guardian, an important new multinational security initiative under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and the leadership of its Task Force 153, which focuses on security in the Red Sea.

Operation Prosperity Guardian is bringing together multiple countries to include the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain, to jointly address security challenges in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with the goal of ensuring freedom of navigation for all countries and bolstering regional security and prosperity.

I don't know anything about the weaponry on the deployed ships in the region but wouldn't an EMP device take out the drones? If not that then that fancy machine gun that shoots fast that they use to take out the fancy Russian missiles work cheaper than the million dollar missiles? Just inquiring out of ignorance of weapons systems.

ETA: Some of those chaff bombs that they used to take out the power lines in Bagdad? Wouldn't they mess up the propellers and take down a wave of drones?
See what happens when I go to sleep? I get weird thoughts. :D
