Academician Zheng Shouren, expert in water conservancy and hydropower engineering, dies
Zheng Shouren, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor-level senior engineer, died of illness in Wuhan on July 24. Zheng Shouren has been responsible for the whole process of Wujiangdu, Gezhouba diversion, closure design, and Geheyan site design. Since 1994, he has been responsible for the design of the Three Gorges Project. He stayed at the construction site and solved many design-related technical problems in time, and contributed to the design and construction of the river closure and cofferdam of the Gezhouba Project, the excellent quality of the Geheyan Project, the power generation one year in advance, and the design and construction of the Three Gorges Project. He has successively won 17 provincial and ministerial awards including the National Science and Technology Progress Special Award, the First Prize, and the International Dam Commission Lifetime Achievement Award. Later, he donated more than 800,000 yuan in various bonuses, manuscript fees, and lecture fees to public welfare undertakings. He said: "As a water conservator, being able to participate in the Three Gorges Project is the greatest happiness. As long as the Three Gorges Project requires me for a day, I will stick to it for a day."
According to the People’s Daily, my country has lost 23 academicians in 2020!

Typically on this, the Lord's Day, I would do no shopping. Today I feel prompted to go to both Costcos in my city. JUST GO.

I have enough for me and mine. But what of the poor, the unwise, the infants, the infirm elderly? "The government" cannot save them; will not save them. Trump would give all he had, but it's not enough. Governors and Mayors have all but declared WAR on seniors, the disabled, and the needy. Believers (and I care not your faith- you are my family in Christ) are persecuted by "the government". Who will succor the innocents and needy? I will "step up". And here and now, that means disrespecting Father Son and Holy Ghost by shopping on a Holy Day. [There's precedent for that--something about King David; something else about eating corn on the stalk...]

IF YOU ARE GETTING A "FEELING" OF NEED FOR IMMEDIATE FURTHER PREPARATIONS, GO NOW.

For those of us who are not engineers can you please let us know if the dam is going to collapse or not? I will have to run to Costco (an hour long trip) to get some more OTC meds and Vitamins if so. Thanks :)
She's going to blow Captain. Be shaking apart now.

Disclaimer: Not an engineer and did not stay at a Holiday Inn.

Suggestion: Top off what you can.

Run time 9:38. Lots of clips of massive land slides due to flooding in China.
View: https://youtu.be/qX0yUj0Te1c

I'm not sure that all of these landslides are in China. I distinctly heard a man in one of them speaking a language that sounded like Italian, some of the foliage looks too "tropical" to be this area of China and makes me think more of Indonesia, and the large mountain losing an entire side, near the end---I think I've seen that one before but can't remember where/when.

Couple quick points.

The CCP controls the 3GD video, do not expect a ‘live feed’ of any catastrophic failure. Won’t happen I expect its already on a delay with false timestamp or they are looping previous images.

Don’t be fooled by animations showing the dam appearing to entirely blow up across its entire length. I would think this is about the least possible scenario outside multiple explosions.

There could be a failure of water overtopping the dam with likely structural failures like the cranes and vehicles washing away and flooding from access points on the top.

There could be a structural failure at a a high stress point along the length. This could be a breach of any size that could possibly be alleviated by the helicopter sandbag drops depending on the size.

There could be structural failure from cavitation of the massive discharge eroding the ground on the output side that would destabilize parts of the massive structure losing ground to support the weight.

There can be internal damage from generation units and flow control gates from the silt and debris clogging or blocking moving parts.

A failure could be a series of events over a long period of time.

I think you have time to go shopping...

A question: It has been said that China allowed the release of the virus to the rest of the world, so we could all share in their pain. If that is true, what the heck are they going to do if 3GD fails? Yikes.

NEW INFORMATION

"The CCP controls the 3GD video, do not expect a ‘live feed’ of any catastrophic failure. Won’t happen I expect its already on a delay with false timestamp"

Absolutely correct, Squid!

I just looked---up to now, we here in GA where I live have been EXACTLY 12 HOURS behind the timestamp on the dam. (eastern daylight time)

If it was 2:23 PM here, it was 2:23 AM there.

I just noticed---and THIS IS NEW SINCE MY FIRST POST THIS MORNING ABOUT 10:30 am

THERE IS NOW A 1-MINUTE DELAY ON THE TIMESTAMP.

It is currently 2:25 pm here; the timestamp on the video is reading 2:24.

And that One Minute gives them time to SHUT DOWN the video before the world sees this thing going kerplooie.

Based on the information available no responsible engineer (I am one) can answer this question or even begin to address much of the wide-eyed doom-spec on this thread. The only thing I can tell you with any certainty is that, given everything going on in the world today, you most certainly should be well-stocked on your meds and vitamins.

I believe the rapture is eminent and this will be the cause of the predicted tribulation death of a third of the waters of the ocean.

Don't bet on it. Always prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and if you survive, no BS like "survivor's guilt."

Hope, like waiting for "The Rapture," is NOT a strategy... Not planning to win/survive, is planning to fail or die...

If the nuke sites flood and the rods along with other radioactivity floats towards the ocean there is no way of knowing if they get stuck in sand or buried in dirt along the way. It would pollute all the soil around it and as the ground dries that would begin to put dust into the atmosphere. Radioactive sources could be eventually found and removed due to detection equipment and robots but the dust blowing around can not. A seal will have been opened.

DW and I hope and pray for it everyday but we don't know what is going to happen. Prepare yourself both spiritually and physically as best you can. These are extraordinary times.

wonder what the Pacific becoming radioactive would do to all the cities on the left coast?

Countrymouse, because of the ocean currents circumnavigating the globe, ALL waters will be affected. Don't forget weather in the equation. Evaporation and rain will spread enormous amounts of pollutants, as well as radiation from nuclear power plant cooling ponds, and perhaps, reactors themselves. The damage the Chinese have created to Mother Earth is incalcuable, and perhaps, irreversible in the very, very long term... Think of half lives of radioactive isotopes, as well as toxins that leach into the very Earth, itself...

A good gentleman on this forum remembered his father's WWII service fighting the Japanese. To his dying day, his hatred for them was unassuaged. He opined that this might well happen here, in our lives...

The animus engendered by the Chinese Communist Party will be such that it's adherents will be hunted down and killed, wherever found... A noble thought, indeed...

Even if the dam doesn't blow, and I'm very much hoping for a miracle, the flooding in China will impact their country as well as the countries that depend on China for manufacturing for years. If you need anything, and can afford to buy it, do so.

Learn to do without, or find analogs/work arounds/alternatives to what you have, what you need. Likewise, learn how to repair what you have, and make what you need...

Welcome to subsistance living, where a wealthy farming family is not on the verge of starvation...

Couldn't hurt them more than the mayors are doing now. Sigh. I know, that's not fair, because there are nice, charming and sane counties along the coast. But . . . .

I should add that the radiation will not stop at the coastline. It will sweep over the nation, depending on the winds, all across the heartland all the way to DC. THAT is something to ponder.

Well, OA, without getting into the Bible (which is forbidden on a non-religious thread) all I can say is this---

What you say in your first sentence is EXACTLY what is predicted to happen.

In one quote, we are told 1/3 of the waters on earth will become unfit for life.

Later on in that same book, we read that ALL the waters of the earth become unfit for life.

So yes--it IS a "progression" of effects.

Because they CAN'T. Open the gates---those floodways ALREADY CAVITATING will COLLAPSE the dam.

I don't understand. Per the graphic, the inflow and outflow match within a couple thousand cubic meters per second. That's pretty good, considering the inflow is such a guesstimate.

One of the gates were closed sometime last night. There was a comment on the live YouTube feed that it had been closed due to cavitation damage and other gates had been opened further. If you feel like going back, it's around page 31.
