CORONA Call Ups

Last time we went to Camp Shelby for summer camp, I had to drive a Jeep down there. I was the only person who knew how to work a clutch, or so they said.

First of all, there is no way that is right, no way you can fix it.

Second of all is that A/C vents? I think I puked up my lunch in my mouth some.

Spent 3 years in TX never saw an A/C or an automatic, unless it was the M16, and they had to have the red things in the barrel.

First night on guard duty at Camp Shelby, MS they put me out in the field guarding our teletype machines with one of those M16's with the red square on the end. Whose going to steal a teletype machine, out in the boon docks? My duty is not to question why, it's just to do or die.

Anyway there I was, out in the boon docks without any TP, and a garbage bag full of McD's bags, and left over fries. The only thing out there was me, and poison ivy vines, all's quite on the western front.

When all of a sudden out of nowhere a coyote yelled.

I politely turned that M16 around and grabbed it by the barrel to use as a baseball bat (the coyote didn't know he was supposed to be scared of the thing) and turned up the radio.

Then I yelled at it, "Come on sucker, let's rock and roll!"

When you're in lockdown ya have plenty of time to think of these things.

Take the Blank Adapter off, chamber a blank round and insert a cleaning rod patch holder down the barrel, muzzle loader style.
When fired like that, it'll stick the patch holder in a cinder block wall.
Or so I'm told. :angl:

What are you kidding me. They didn't trust us with blanks just the blank adapter. If someone fired a blank, you won't be able to find anybody for a week, and summer camp was only 2 weeks long. They didn't even bother giving me an empty mag. LOL

Spent 2 weeks down there a couple of times, and would just shake my head as to what went on. After that first night there were some 155 Howitzers just down the road, firing into the impact zone, the shells whistling through the air, sounded cool, but they wouldn't even give us blanks.

I guess they were afraid we would shoot at each other. Come to think of it they might have been right.LOL

Weekend warrior pilot was hot-dogging a Huey, broke the tail boom off and killed a few.

A tanker crew managed to shoot another track and killed a few more.

I got out after that.

The stupid kills, or at least it should more often. If you are in proximity to stupid people, you are in danger.

Not calling you out, or starting an argument, or anything, but I read over the EO and didn't see anything relating to, or stating that the call up was "medical". Good assumption, for sure, but not stated. As I read it, so some clarity is needed at least for me.

If the units being called up are Engineers or Medial units, I can see that as: units constructing hospitals, and medical staff to occupy them, no problem and would seem to be inline with what the President has been saying, no problem help is on the way sort of thing.

However, if the units are MP or Infantry units that would be a big dot, for total woo, and conspiracy theories out the ying yang. Meaning enforcement of local no travel, shelter in place laws issued by cities/states. Your papers please.

Also what does Coast Guard have to do with building hospitals and staffing them? Ya see woo already started.
The call ups are to fill slots that are either:

Taken out due to virus

Fill MOS slots and personnel who are focused on supporting efforts to contain virus

Fill MOS slots that are vacated through attrition, cross training, other emergencies or actual OCONUS combat losses.

The EO does not state that all will be called up right now, it gives the branches and DOD the flexibility to fill vacated slots over a 2 year period as quickly as possible.

I just re-read your post. Those are heating vents your making reference to. Later versions deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan had aftermarket air conditioning installed due to the brutal heat and the body armor our troops had to wear.

Yeah also ran into a few of those incidents.

The impact zone was in the center of Camp. So all the maneuvers were around the edges, and everybody would shoot into the impact zone. They had "special" shells because of the closeness to the zone. Meaning loaded light.

One guy grabbed the wrong shell, it over shot the impact zone, and landed among some tanks, killed one,.....I think.

Another occasion: For safety reason being an Armored Unit there were designated sleeping areas, where the camp was set up. Well one young lady didn't like sleeping with the others, and got off by herself. Got ran over by a tank.

When I was RA, we never, well that is wrong we went one time, and set up a Division Rear down around Austin or so, at an old airport, no longer in use. Took the PX, and theater with us, and bunks. Had one hanger with nothing but bunks in it. No privacy at all. They had all the women bunking on one side, and all the men on the other side. Needless to say no one got in their jammies. We did have to shave out of steel pots, but the cooks had gotten up early and heated us some water. Boy was it rough. Had to take showers standing on wooden pallets, and those porta potties, yuck. LOL

I was again blessed when in the Guard, with a different Job/MOS and worked at TOC, so was again pretty well taken care of.

ETA: It wasn't just Guard people who acted weird. While stationed at Hood in the 70's a guy stole a tank and was driving it to Coppers Cove to visit his girl friend.
