OH CRAP!!!
Saying the patient involved was involved with Duncan's care during his second visit!! That would of meant the worker was following all of CDC's precautions. No wonder they are grim this morning.
But we have rocket scientists on this board who say they can safely take care of an infected family member at home. Next.
Those don't bother me so much John. It's the ones even on this board that think it's all a hoax and a fake. Tell that to the thousands that have dropped dead and whole villages that have been wiped out in Africa.
If this medical worker with protective gear went hot, imagine the finacee and the 3 kids in the apartment with Duncan before he went to the ER on the second visit. They have got to be hot.

I'm flashing back now to some of the NBC training I had in the military and I don't like what I'm thinking about.
I had the impression the doctor wanted this information out and waited until the "handlers" left and was spitting it out, looking like a man condemned (both from the information and for what he had just said). Like Dr. Gupta, I think he wanted this known, once said it can not be unsaid - however refusing to answer the question might also have somewhat answered the question.Dude,. they are ushering that dr out....wow...don't want him to say something he's not supposed to.....
This was a very grim and serious presser.....crap!!!

I have expected additional cases, especially from the Sept 26th visit. I was really hoping not to have any from the Sept 28th visit, so this is certainly concerning.
Well, on the bright side, so far nobody from Mr Duncan's Sept 26th visit has come down with the virus. I find that very surprising. Maybe the virus is only extremely contagious near the end of the illness?
Also, when Mr Duncan was brought back to the hospital on the 28th, they didn't immediately know he had Ebola. Perhaps the person with the new case was wearing CDC recommended protection for every day in an ER and not for caring for Ebola patients. (that last part is a bit of a stretch, but possible I guess)
Needless to say, husband is very upset and agrees this is a total Game Changer he said "there are no excuses now; they could explain away Western doctors stuck in Africa and they could explain away the Spanish nurse having faulty equipment but this they can't explain away..." Then he went back to trying to help our elderly sick dog, getting some pain medication down her (vet approved) in hopes of getting 120 pounds of dog into a car for an emergency Weekend vet visit...
This has horrible implications for all health care workers on all levels..and of course the public...

John, it isn't perfect, but I am planning now to seriously look at the "garbage bag protocols" invented by that lovely young student nurse in Africa who won an award for it; not perfect for sure and perhaps a faint hope but she has proven that sometimes it can provide a barrier to care for an ill family member and would be better than nothing (or just shooting a house-hold member who became ill and then putting a gun to yourself at the first fever).
If I recall it involved full garbage bags with tape everywhere and making or using a masque....
I don't think that necessarily the protective gear failed or wasn't sufficient....although it might have been considering that scientists working with Ebola are in a full BSL-4 containment facility. The defensive training I had with protective gear was more towards the nuclear and chemical end but the biologicals are similar in that effect to chemical. If your protective suit, gloves or mask are contaminated it can safely be removed and swapped out but it is an indepth procedure and one that you don't do by yourself. You use the buddy system and you each make sure the other one is doing it right.
Say that some body fluids are splashed on your protective suit. You take that suit off and lay it on the floor and then when you step out of the trousers you happen to brush up against that garment on the floor with your foot and now your foot has the virus on it and your starting to track it around. Or your gloves are contaminated and if you take your gloves off in a haphazard way part of the outer layer of the glove brushes up against your skin and now you've contaminated yourself. The workers all need a lot more training on procedures. I don't think the equipment failed but the protocols for getting into and out of the gear either were not followed or mistakes were made.
My husband can, I will probably have him look this up (they are getting hard to find, I just tried getting the specifics) I suspect it is something he will want to have around the house and teach the rest of us to use in a pinch. There are rehydration formulas that can be made from home ingredients, sanitation would be hard but we keep lots of huge vats of vinegar around which is supposed to the best, non-hospital source. She was also able to personally administer fluids by IV due to her medical training and access to supplies. If you are fortunate enough to be able to do the same, bless you. I'm not -
They are prepping for panic. And they have reason.
To see the PTB from the hospital appear so solemn and almost numb is alarming.
I feel so badly for the health care workers who are being expected to take these risks! My prayers for them and their families are on the top of my list. God bless all of you who put yourself at risk for the rest of us.
None of the training we had back in the late 60's and early 70's could prepare us for what is coming...
May God Help Us... Amen.

Irish Journal had story before it hit most of the US internet press...FWIW, if there are other positive cases, look for them to be covered up in the US and Europe. And for very good reasons totally unrelated to a mass hysteria and panic.
I think a talking point has been released. Multiple news channels are asking the same question as to whether or not only specific facilities should handle Ebola patients. That in and of itself might make sense but they are all asking that question. Cue up the Hegelian dialectic perhaps.
