I think his family that was moved(out of the public eye) has ebola also and will never be seen again.

Dr. Guptka on CNN just called the newly diagnosed health care worker a nurse. Don't know if he is talking over his head or not or if they have additional information in advance which will be released at the news conference.

I actually will be surprised if the family totally vanishes, it is possible but I think the amount of screaming from some quarters along with "interventions" from certain politicians etc are likely to limit that; rather they will keep them isolated and with no news unless or until one of them ends up in the hospital and then "family privacy" will prevent many updates.

As for getting sick, probably some (if not all) of them will but viruses are funny things as are human beings, it isn't 100 percent certain that anyone WILL be infected with something, just that they have a high chance of doing so. If this was not the case, every single person in the Liberian slums would likely be ill or dead now; many are but not everyone. Even in the Black Death of the 14th century there were people who for no obvious reason caught it in either of the two first waves that happened 12 years apart. Today we know that some of these people carried a favored gene mutation (as did some of those who survived getting ill) that also in a weird twist of fate, helps prevent or limit the damage from HIV/AID's. Other people may just not have caught it for whatever-reason that we don't understand; even in North America 10 percent of the people survived (at least) even if up to 90 percent died from European diseases. So most Native Americans alive to today, had ancestors who were from that ten percent...

So while it is unlikely, it is possible that Duncan's girlfriend might get lucky and not get sick; obviously some people living in similar circumstances in West Africa do not become infected even after caring for family members. But one of the children who maybe barely touched "Uncle Duncan's" hand might become very ill and die, diseases are like that, unpredictable. You can make very educated guesses but you still can't predict them for certain.

Finally, I've noticed that the majority of people I've seen (and seen in reports) in Africa who are ill appear to be age 40 and under; I am sure some elderly people do become ill and die but if the area were not such a horrific "hot zone" looking to see if there might be previous illnesses that would not have to be Ebola but something that turns out to provide limited protection. This DID turn out to be the case in the 1918 flu epidemic and was also the case in the second wave of the Black Death in the 14th century, though of course we can't be as certain on the 14th century stuff except that the majority of deaths were children and teenagers in the second round.

I will however, but happy but surprised if no one from the family catches it, ultimately while his behavior is understandable, Duncan will go down in history as a very selfish man...

Dr. Guptka is a good man and he doesn't always "go with the program" if he thinks that medical information is important; he because a personal hero of mine when he told the local cops and military to "drop dead" when they tried to force evacuated him away from his patients whom he had just operated on after the Earthquake. He then went on international news while those "authorities" were there and said to leave would be a death sentence for people he had just operated on and he wasn't going anywhere. He then trained the camera crews that stayed, on the stop to be his care assistants.

He never said it, but he gave the impression the local "authorities" would have to shoot him live and on camera if they really wanted him to leave his patients, I'm sure he realized that his network might fire him but he didn't care.

In the morning most of those people were still alive and so was Dr. Guptka, doesn't make him a perfect person no one is but it makes him a hero and a very good doctor.

If A, then B. What if A wasn't true? What if Duncan DIDN'T have ebola? Now that opens a whole new box of what-ifs! Would certainly explain why the judge and company rushed in where angels fear to tread.

I am pretty sure he did, everything fits so far but the real question is about Ebola itself in terms of how easy is this version to catch and how do you protect front line hospital staff from a disease that looks like flu or Malaria in the first few days. You can't really have every ER nurse and doctor in a Moon Suit all the time, in every ER in North America and you can't quarantine everyone with flu symptoms during the Winter in North America.

Melodi, I put that on the table because I'm not entirely convinced everything does fit so far. I've said that while now acknowledging that you have far more medical wisdom than I do.

That is quite amazing about Dr. Gupta...I did not know that. I've always liked him...and seen him during this Ebola thing give information that was contrary to other talking heads.

So this is 16 days since the first time Mr. Duncan went to the hospital and was sent home. Is that correct? September 26th wasn't it?

I wonder how much more susceptible the HIV population is to the Ebola, considering their immune system is compromised.

And think of these incredible numbers! Could Ebola be worse than this?

Perspective: According to WHO

•35.3 million people worldwide currently have HIV/AIDS,

•36 million people have died of AIDS since 1981

1.6 million people died of HIV/AIDS in 2012.

•2012, an estimated 2.3 million individuals worldwide were newly infected with HIV

I had no idea it was still that many annual deaths. That's a lot in 2012.

ETA I just saw that 2012 number is worldwide, no just US. Whew. But still a lot.

One of the articles states that people who came into contact with the health care worker are being monitored. I wonder how many people that is, and how many they've overlooked.

If Ebola isn't transmitted until the person has a fever, then doubtfully many contacts. Being a 'nurse' the person probably checked in immediately - we can hope.

Does anyone have a live TV feed link to the news conference?

I may have some "medical wisdom" but I am not a doctor nor medically qualified - but I do have a serious interest in the effects of diseases on human history (and co-wrote a series of novels set in the 14th century) and I am married to a medical student whose father is a doctor. I was also raised in a medical family, we lived with my great-aunt the doctor until I was nine and I thought all families pulled out the PDA (Physicians Desk Assistant" to look up the dosages on pills when a chile became ill, usually at the breakfast table.

So most of my "wisdom" is sideways but I also have had a good education in how authorities try to keep lids on boiling pots, often until they explode...another bit of history...

The guy that is doing the interview is scared shitless. Halting speech, clearing his throat, looking at his notes and is reiterating that you can't contract Ebola except by contamination by bodily fluids. This guy isn't a doctor though he will be introducing the doctor shortly. The mayor of Dallas will also comment. Carried live on CNN and I'm sure the other networks. They will not release information about the patient as far as name, ect.

Just a follow up to my post above. I hadn't yet read the main ebola thread and didn't know others were discussing what I posted here. I shoulda known better.

Someone get this talking head off the set and bring on the doctor "remember you can not catch bla, blah blah, family request privacy blah, blah..."

Dr. Varga saying patient was self monitoring, required to take their own temperature 2x daily and the patient self notified the hospital. Took 90 minutes for getting patient to hospital. One close contact with the patient is being monitored. Patient is stable and reiterates that no personal information will be released. Emergency department at Prysbeterian in on diversion due to staffing levels. Triple checking to make sure they are in compliance with CDC procedures.

No real details do to family privacy request...CDC will monitor everyone in self-monitor pool - patient was in self-monitor pool another person from the household has been place in full quarantine - CDC will start interviewing everyone, more staff from CDC being brought in.

Judge Clay Jenkins from Dallas County was the guy doing the introduction. Back at podium and saying all health care professionals that had any contact are again self monitoring and taking temps. They have 19 'disease detective' resources on the ground and are requesting more. Saying that the CDC is not there today and Jenkins is saying that they are getting ready to leave and go back to the CDC. Jenkins saying that the State is not with them this morning but are actively working to keep you safe. Saying that the 48 people they were monitoring continue to be asymptomatic. Saying all necessary protocols are in place.

Mayor says they learned about it at midnight and says the citizens of Dallas remain safe. Says Dallas fire and rescue Hazmat team has cleaned up open areas of apartment complex in 3700 block of 'Marquita'? Says they sprayed clean up agent and police are standing by to make sure nobody enters apartment complex. Says they have contacted everyone on the block and has sent out reverse 911 calls in a four block area around the complex that the patient was living in.

Holy moly. Decontaminated apt complex where worker lives. Pet may be inside. 3700 Marquita apartment in Dallas. Going to go in and clean interior of apt later today.

Mayor says they decontaminated the patients vehicle and will send hazmat team into the apartment to clean it later today. Saying had action plan since last week and they are executing that action plan now. Saying they will give instant information to the public as available and that the CDC also will be doing a test to confirm and now turning it back to Dr. Varga.

OH CRAP!!!

Saying the patient involved was involved with Duncan's care during his second visit!! That would of meant the worker was following all of CDC's precautions. No wonder they are grim this morning. And says that the worker was wearing protective gear and following full CDC precautions. Gown, gloves, masks, shields and saying they are very concerned. Serious feces now.

Trust these idiots at your own risk.

Then ask yourself:

It THIS government can't keep an 8 year old Guatemalan girl from crossing our Southern border, how are they going to contain this? Much less without stopping all visitors from West Africa INCLUDING Nigeria. We won't. We can't. So millions will die as a result.

Have a nice day!
