Politics wise, using the April 21st speech to announced the war would really freak out NATO.

Yeah, if Putin is just going to seize the canal, secure a land bridge to maripol from the Ukraine, and push forward, say 50 miles? all along the front line, he could do that within the next 3 days or so, assuming he had the logistics set up. My understanding is he still has a vast horde of stuff pouring in from Siberia of all places. Time, ask me for anything but time.

Siberia was where the Soviets pulled the resources to bolster the Red Army after it got ground up holding off the Germans as well. At that point the Japanese were not seen as a second front threat when compared to the Germans. I have to wonder what the perceived threat from Beijing looks like to Moscow both right now and out a few years?

Many Russian tanks and infantry fighting vehicles use a three number system as a form of tactical call sign for individual vehicles. I'm somewhat familiar with their WWII system which I believe they still use today.

From an online article - Soviet Hammer: Red Army Armour in Berlin 1945

The tactical number " 252" could be an example of the standard system , which identifies it as the 2nd tank in the 5th platoon of the 2nd regiment in a brigade. However, the first number, " 2 " , could also indicate the 52nd Guards Tank Brigade, the second brigade within the corps.

The Wehrmacht also used a three number system that identified a vehicles' position within a tank or armored infantry regiment. For example "324" would designate, 3rd company, 2nd platoon, 4th vehicle in that platoon.

Interestingly there is little evidence supporting the notion that Russians or Germans ever obscured these numbers for security reasons. Unit cohesion seemed to be the primary consideration. The only real reason to cover the tactical number is if the vehicles are going to be redistributed within an existing or into a new formation and new numbers then assigned to each vehicle.

During the final push towards Berlin, Russian armored fighting vehicles had white stripes painted around the tank turrets. The stripes also were sometimes painted longitudinally over the top of the tank and vertically on the sides forming an "+" at the top of the turret. Some call these "invasion stripes" and were used as a form of friendly ground unit identification and for positive identification to Russian ground attack aircraft which were freely roaming the battle space.

Now it gets interesting.

Ukraine AFV's used the white stripes during the last dust up a few years ago. Those do not appear to be currently in use by Ukraine. Ukraine also uses the three number system for it's AFVs. Now compound that with the very recent appearance of invasion stripes on some Russian vehicles. Then for extra excitement Russia, and Ukraine use almost identical AFVs. Both sides also paint their vehicles in a type of olive green Some Russian vehicles may also sport elaborate camouflage paint schemes. This is by no means universal and appears to be most often seen for parade vehicles, recon, or elite "Guards" units.

Bottom line, it is going to be interesting to see how Russian and Ukraine AFVs don't encounter friendly fire issues since they use the same tactical markings, vehicles, paint, etc.

Question for consideration .... Do you all think that Putin will take into account the potential U.S. domestic situation in his timing of any major operation? The Russians know well the disruption BLM/Antifa operations have caused over the past year and they'd be well aware of the current trial in Minnesota. Could the Russians want to wait and see if the U.S. falls into any kind of internal unrest before making a move? I doubt Russia has any fear of European military forces but they'd be foolish not to respect ours. If we are mired in widespread riots it may limit our flexibility overseas?

They may very well be waiting for just that. Though I think that the US is nearly in enough turmoil as is. I think they could begin their operation as soon as the mud dries as some have said here already.

Edit: one thing that keeps coming to mind for me is the time of season. Tactically when you expect a hard battle and want time to win decisively, attack at dawn so you have the most daylight to finish the fight. If you want to do a quick raid, strike at dusk so you can melt quickly into the darkness (pre night vision of course). In WW2, Germany struck Poland in September, at the "dusk" of the fighting season because they were expecting a quick fight. Today Russia is moving its offensive forces, encircling Ukraine and putting its whole military on alert in the "dawn" of the fighting season. It paints a grim picture...
