This is my first post. I am in Austin. I shop with my wife, and use my keen powers of observation to notice things and draw conclusions. My first conclusion is that the shortage of Mason jars is about to get worse.

The fact that the company that owns Ball and Kerr has had a notice on their website for months now about the shortage should have been everyone's first clue to stock up or find an alternative... and due to that shortage good luck finding a dehydrator now.

I wonder why it’s so hard to find help, and if that’s true in their other depts., or just in that one.
Are so many unemployed people still getting benefits?

Not buying it as they were the older employees running that meat department. 45 and over my guess. Not sure what was up. Never seen that. The prepackaged meat counter was full.

That’s not going to help matters any, for sure

Maybe a department “call-out”? Everyone getting “sick” all on the same day? Of all the department in a grocery store, the meat department would be the most difficult to staff. Many positions there require experience; meat cutters require certification (here in AZ anyway. Is it the same everywhere?)

Kroger is notoriously difficult to work for. They are known in the industry to be heartless slave drivers. Maybe the local meat department staff just had it and sent a message to management.

Another possibility is their meat delivery didn’t show up so there wasn’t enough product to put out—? I’m guessing here. With JIT inventory, a missed truck really puts a damper on your business.

Keep asking around. Definitely sounds like something more than meets the eye is going on.

OK, they are ruining my life now. I just spent an hour trying to find veggie pepper online. Don't want the 1 lb if you could even get it the problems Frontier is having. Want the glass spice jars. Finally found someone with 9 jars so snapped them up if they don't cancel which I have been running into.
I've used it on everything for years. I know we are spoiled but even though I still have a couple of jars how the heck does a person even think of all the BS shortages they have now. Pumpkin? Veggie pepper?

An Amazon seller has some available nov 2nd. A bit pricy for a 1 lb bag.

Walmart looks to be having difficulty filling my internet order for 3 bags of dog food.

On wednesday morning I placed an order for 3 bags of the 31 lb bags of purina one dog food in the chicken flavor that I normally feed my dogs. Walmart at the time stated a sunday delivery which I though was strange as its longer then the normal 2 day delivery window but I wasn't concerned as I still have 5 unopened bags of food left for the pups and this order was to keep the supplies up. So this morning I get an email from walmart with 2 fedex tracking numbers showing scheduled delivery today, sunday, with the third bag of dog food showing as still processing and no tracking number provided.

I'm not sure how walmart does fulfillment in the N.Ga area but I do find it interesting that they couldn't come up with 3 bags of dog food at the same time from their warehouses. Or this could be a supply issue with purina not making enough purina one chicken to keep walmart in stock.

I need to start paying more attention to the dog food aisle at a physical walmart store as I shop there to see what the stocking levels look like in person. If store levels are low I might need to place more frequent internet orders to increase my supplies as the dogs eat a bag every 3 weeks.

tbd

I'm going to throw this little note on here that for the last couple of months fedex has been doing 7 day delivery in my AO. Delivery volume is so high that they are running trucks daily so that they can keep up according to my driver.

Sure, it is nothing special. pepper, garlic, celery flakes, red bell but it lasts a long time in the sealed jars and I don't want to buy everything separate. I use it instead of salt cause of BP. Like I said spoiled and lazy that's me now days.
Dh makes his own version of this but with ONLY hot peppers. I've never seen veggie pepper for sale here but it sounds good so I may have to try and make my own version.

FedEx started delivering on Sunday in most locations back in Jan. Most people have NO idea the volume of parcels that the delivery services handle. It's Christmas every day now, and Christmas is just plain HELL...
My walmart orders used to ALWAYS ship from Fla. which is certainly not their closest hub to me, but they always arrived in 2 days. Now there is no rhyme or reason to when, or if, a Walmart order shows up. I've had part of an order ship from Arizona and another part from NY and take 10 days to get here...

I noted Tractor Supply was short on dog food too.

I agree about keeping your eyes open. I wish I could still shop in person. I'm running into the same thing with just everyday average items. The last order I placed was not that big and it came in 3 different deliveries. Vitacost is doing the same thing. I ordered 4 cases of Orgain protein drink and got the 4th case separate a week later. And whats weird I live a few miles from a large Walmart distribution center.

I’m not positive about this but regarding all of the dog food posts, and since I work in the veterinary world, my guess is that the online ordering for dog food has at least doubled since covid, if not tripled. At least in our clinic it has.

That is why there are so many issues right now. I always, always, tell our people to NOT get behind or wait until the food is about gone to order more especially for those who’s dog requires Rx food.

It’s been really hard to keep up with just about all of the food but especially the Rx ones. We keep several in our stock room but there’s literally hundreds of variations and we don’t have the room. Plus, people want more items delivered these days. I don’t blame them about that! Those bags are heavy!!!

Ok - I got back a bit ago from my sunday morning outings and where one of my stops was walmart. This is one pic of the canned dog food area. The shelf went on and it had some stock but mostly of the more expensive stuff like little caesars. The dry looked better but only because they had the bags spread out to cover shelf space.

And I got another email from walmart while I was out. It says:

We're very sorry, but due to high demand, one or more of your items is delayed. We're working hard to fulfill them as fast as we can.

We'll let you know when your items ship or if we have to cancel.

Purina ONE Natural Dry Dog Food, SmartBlend Chicken & Rice Formula, 31.1 lb. Bag

I'm not quite sure whats going on with dog food supplies but I think I am going to keep my supplies up higher then normal at least until the end of the year.

TBD, have you tried chewy.com? We love them!!

Carlyblue

Yes I have tried chewy. Nothing against them but this time walmart was cheaper per bag so walmart got my order. I just found it interesting that of the 3 bags I had ordered only 2 were scheduled for delivery and the third bag was delayed and out of stock.

I'm not worried about it showing up. Purina is a big company and I'm sure that walmart is if not their biggest customer then in the top couple of ones so walmart will be getting resupplied. I was just surprised that warehouse inventories were so tight to impact a 3 bag order.

In my looking at dog food at my local walmart store this morning it didn't seem like the low inventory levels were directed at just one brand. I'm in a rural area so it difficult to compare to other stores. Someone above mentioned their tractor supply being low of dog food. My local grocery store mostly only sells small bags are higher per pound prices so I never even look for dog food there. Feed store only sells a couple of brands I never heard of and keeps their stock in the warehouse and pulls it for you as you purchase it so I have no idea on their supplies.

So again I'm not quite sure whats going on with dog food supplies but I think I am going to keep my supplies up higher then normal at least until the end of the year.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t feed that food. I read the ingredients list.

I'm on my 2'nd set of dogs being fed purina one food as their primary dry feed with the first set started being fed purina one in 98. All big dogs, 80lb range. Last set of hounds lived to be 14. These Curs are both around 8 now and I never had any health issues with either set.

I believe the trick is to feed dogs a diverse diet rather then just find a food and feed nothing else but that. Purina One is the 2'nd to the best purina brand feed only under the pro plan feeds. But basically it all boils down to cost -vs- quality. Dogs get fed a free range fried egg and cheese mix each morning with their dry food and each evening get fed something like canned tuna, sardines or something similar with their dry food each evening. So I'm not to worried about what they eat.

Well that all depends on the production date codes on the bags of the food, hence the reason you may not have gotten the third bag.

True - But again purina one wasn't on the identified list of recall feeds. Plus purina makes their feeds inhouse and not through a contract manufacture like a lot of the lower quality brands or even the smaller higher quality brands. Or at least they did the inhouse thing when I last looked at the company for investment reasons back a couple of years ago.

Sorry this thread has veered from grocery stocking issues. I was only pointing out that dog food inventory levels might be in short supply and you might want to pay attention in your areas if you have dogs

Look, they’re your dogs and you can feed them whatever you like. I read the ingredients. It’s basically corn (indigestible to dogs) and meat processer floor sweepings. JMHO.

Yes, it’s expensive to feed 5-star kibble. But then when my kids were toddlers I didn’t feet them dirt.

As far as dog food goes mine both get the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Duck and Potato (they have allergies) which I get at Petco (need to get there this week as I have a 10% off coupon on dog food). I spent about a month researching dog food ingredients when I had the Lab allergy tested and another month when I had the Min Schnauzer tested. Of course, what one can have the other can't. Anything with peas, pea flour, etc. is verboten as it gives both of them the runs.

Was at Wally in Arvada CO last Friday and the pasta section was 99% empty and the Ramen/noodle section right next to it was about 80% empty. Baking aisle was pretty well stocked except for spices and salt. Did pick up some of the shelf stable milk to keep on hand for emergencies which I hadn't seen in months.

Weird things are empty!

Every time I read this thread I'm so thankful that I'm a long term prepper. There are things I've been unable to replace that I've used from my pantry, but not enough that I'm worried about not eating. Its important to be flexible and not panic when you cannot find what you need. Often times it seems the items missing on one shopping trip are available on the next trip while there are different items missing. I have the basics so if frozen pizzas aren't available I know I can make my own scratch pizza and the same with most other meals. And I still have enough canning lids for another season. With the drought this season's harvest was dismal so not much canning happened here.

I know others have been looking to add to their stash of canned pumpkin. My Krnger must have just re stocked. It was full of name brand and generic, both large and smaller size cans. The little blue sticker was there even though it was stocked. I assume that means they don't really know how often they'll get shipments in. I bought a dozen or so cans. There was at least 5 times that left. Also, my WM seems to get random shipments of canning jars. The past 3 or 4 weeks they have had 3 flats of quarts. If you need them, keep walking by where they keep them. You might find a few.

After a solid month of looking, I finally found some cotton balls at WM this AM. I didn't realize how many of them I used until I ran completely out. I could have broken into the livestock's roll cotton stash, but I like to keep that sterile until I have to have it.

This morning I ran into some " out of stock items on chewey. Sheba perfect portions medley. Before anyone starts criticizing the quality of fancy feast or sheba it is the only thing the brats don't turn their nose up at. Even the ferals turn their nose up at the case of quality food bought. Went ahead and found some on Amazon but I get really worried when I have trouble buying cat food.

Were they the jumbo sized cotton balls? I can find the small ones, but not the jumbo's at our Walmart. I like using the larger size better. I can't find them anywhere.
