WEATHER DERECHO - Significant Thunderstorm Wind Threat This Afternoon for Southern WI and Northern/Central Illinois

Just to let you guys know that are without power help is on the way. Must have passed 200 utility trucks heading west bound on 80. Started seeing them around 2pm at the pa line.
Noticed alot of Alabama power must have been in NJ or NY from the prior storm, rt 80 is not the normal way to get from Alabama.

Com Ed probably hired a portion of them for IL & particularly Chicago - the Northside Elites are getting restless

In parts of the Midwest, homeowners and utility companies have cut back on tree pruning as a cost-saving measure. As a result, when we get severe wind storms, there are plenty of limbs and occasionally entire trees falling on power lines. Clearing the roads first and then removing the trees so that the power crews can get to the lines takes more time!

Add to that the size of this storm, and then it makes sense why some customers are likely going to be without power for a week or longer.

In my neighborhood, the electrical lines are underground. There was a problem at the transfer station, so we were only out about six hours, as compared to our neighboring towns, many of which are either still out or just got power back this morning.

Wow! Well, the farmers out west were crying that the crops looked incredible, but the prices were awful... wait a minute, and things change.

My engineer son says you couldn't pay him enough to be a farmer... or to flush a million bucks down the crapper in a Lost Wages casino, which to him is the same thing!

Not here, thankfully. They actually RAISED our prices for power, but they've been aggressively pruning. Really aggressively; whole chunks of woods, halves of trees, anything that looks at a power line funny is getting chainsawed harder than a co-ed in a slasher movie.

Post Sandy biggest problem was the town employees won't touch the trees till the power company says the wires are dead.
Most roads got cleared by the people that live here.
Including one huge tree that someone moved with either a dozer or track hoe.
(Torn up asphalt was the give away) they put the tree and 12 poles (with all the wire and crap) into a pile. Someone came along and put a big sign on it. Something to the effect of "here is your stuff" to the power company.

Packy reports on Facebook they are very worried about the meat in her freezer though she was able to get a battery booster power pack for her phone (and was trying to get something for her medically stuff sorted.

She put out a call for anyone local that may have a chain saw, there's died and there are NO REPLACEMENT PARTS (let that sink in a moment).

They have just been told it may be next week before power is restored, right now the priorities are keeping the freezer cold and her medical devices powered.

She isn't in serious danger without them but is uncomfortable.

If you are on her facebook link she also posted photos of her surrounding area, here are a few

Power back on around noon, will post more later.

Awesome!

I have a tiny electric chain saw, which probably won't do you a lot of good, unfortunately. You might try

You might also give the university a call about volunteer help. The Drake Football team is going around their neighborhood, doing free tree clean up -- there might be something similar there. If not, there should be! Several strong guys can do in 40 minutes what would take 4 days for a lot of us.

A little update: About 1000 homes are still without power in my area, my old neighborhood is/was attached to the grid of the neighborhood that got hit the hardest, something like 1000+ power line poles snapped off at the base. That section is still down from what I understand, but they did get my neighborhood separated from that part of the grid and attached us to another part of the grid... WE HAVE POWER AGAIN!!!

So I have a pretty extensive shopping list starting with a much larger slightly used... and you know they'll be coming up here in the next week or so... generator. Our current generator is about the size of a large truck battery with a handle on it, it's a Honda and no I don't know what the watts/amps/output is other than the guy, who is currently fixing it, said it will run the deep freezer.

A new smartphone for me because my iPhone 5 is now classified as an idiot phone.
A battery-operated, a large one, fan... got a small one at Walmart last night but want a larger one for the bedroom.
Battery backups for the CPAP machines, etc.
Battery operated radio since my old boom box died.
A much larger LED lantern, we have two small ones which are nice for going up and down the stairs, but one that would light up a whole room and not just a tiny corner would be nice.
Find our flashlights... and buy more batteries... I had plenty of AA and AAA batteries Thank God, but our DD batteries were from 2016 and couldn't/wouldn't power a lightning bugs butt!

Because of years of hanging out on forums like this one we knew to get ice right away for the deep freezer and then to cover it with our wool blankets x 2, the thick comforter we have, and the down sleeping bags. So everything in the deep freezer is still frozen solid... but I don't think it would have made it much past Saturday afternoon when we would have had to start cooking, canning, and tossing stuff cause thawing would have been inevitable since there's no dry ice to be found anywhere around here right now.

I'm sure I'm missing something... FYI I was still able to cook because our gas stove is from 1952 and doesn't have all of that fancy stuff on it, and surprisingly we still had hot water, gas water heater.

Thank you! We've bought tools from there before... I'll be checking Theisens this evening... and also check for DD cell batteries and a much larger LED lantern. If they don't have it then maybe go to Huxley on Saturday to see what they have in stock, or Bomgaars in Boone.

Per the neighbors: D batteries and lanterns are pretty much gone since Ankeny was out for awhile and neighborhoods on the east side of Des Moines are still out, so Fleet Farm, area Walmarts -- sold out.

You might also try the drug stores (CVS, Walgreens, etc) in your hunt for batteries.

I loaned my big battery and my battery-powered fans to several seniors who are still without power in Des Moines. One will need to be moved out to her daughter's in Newton if she doesn't get power back today -- she's 91 and not doing well without a/c.

Yikes, I can't even imagine... thank you for lending her a fan I tell you that was the worst part not having a fan! turns out I can live without a lot of stuff, but not my fan!

Call ahead. Some places were without power for awhile and are woefully behind on getting truck deliveries in. Boone was hard-hit.

When you can, buy yourself 3 - 4 different sized battery fans. They can be used at other times, too! They make a huge different in comfort and morale.

I still don't have power. Yes, I'm whining. At least I can recharge my RAV battery pack at my workplace.

At least you can do that at your workplace. The downtown Des Moines Y got their behinds kicked hard and are now open for showers and for people to recharge phones. They weren't going to open because of CV-19, but they got talked to by the higher ups on the board. There is a major lack of open shelters!
And they've gotten tons of tax breaks and need to contribute a bit to the community!

Basically, any run by batteries that are in stock are going to be OK. The main thing is "in stock" because they are a China item and rapidly running low.

Thank you, I'll set up an account with WM and get these ordered, and any batteries I also need.

This one looks like a contender.

Grinnell was hit very hard. Now have opened a shelter with showers cots and charging station. I just got phone back today. Lost many BIG trees rural Jasper county. I was outside in my garden when it hit. Wicked temp seems drop 15 degrees in a second and than tress flying like toothpicks. No one hurt no real property damage but tree carnage. From Poweshiek Co. EMA:
Damage from Monday’s storm has caused severe damage to electric lines across Poweshiek county, most extensive is the Grinnell and Malcom areas. Power will not be restored for the next several days. Crews are working around the clock to repair damages across the city and the transmission lines that feed the city of Grinnell and Malcom areas. It is anticipated that power will be restored no earlier than Saturday August 15th, and that is at the earliest and best case scenario. More information will be coming out tomorrow about additional services available to Poweshiek county residents.

Stay safe!

What were the windspeeds there like? I've yet to hear what they were for the Ames area, I know that two blocks west of me it looks like a bomb went off.

I imagine there will corrections as time goes by. Data is still being collected.

From the photos that friends posted on FB that live just west and north of me it looks like a damned bomb went off, limbs through the roofs and walls of houses, vehicles, etc. Praise God our biggest obstacle was part of the neighbor's tree being on our garage roof, and it didn't cause any noticeable damage since it was just the top portion of the tree, where the lighter smaller branches are.

packy, im also a big fan person and stocked up on a few. here are a couple really great fans that run on batteries we really like

small tabletop - looks small but very powerful. runs about 8hrs. i also plug it into a power bar when necessary

the one you found and posted is also excellent,

ive also got a couple of these--little fan with a handle. they are Great to either put in bag and take with or flip the handle to set on a desk or even put the handle in a coffee cup to stand it up..

hand held battery fan

sometimes you just GOTTA have a fan or 2 or 4
hope things get back togeather quick for everyone.

That hand held fan would be most excellent at a baseball game or at the local outdoor theater they normally hold in the summer thanks for the links.

they are really great, cant tell ya how many times it saved my life in the summer when the AC in the truck was out.

here is another portable one but ive not tried it, but it sure looks like it would be great especially for people who live in hot climates
