The herd is in the very early stages of another big spook, from what I'm reading around the web. I expect panic buying to return soon, especially if/when the next stimulus checks go out.

Thanks to all who are keeping us ahead of shortages.

One thing I discovered during the last round, eBay was a fantastic resource for finding needed goods when they couldn't be found elsewhere. You have to watch for price gouging but I found a lot of reasonably priced food, meds, and supplies when other stores were sold out.

I totally agree. Ditto on eBay, I found that tip somewhere on the board and went there for an OTC med that has been chronically out of stock within a 2 hr drive of home. This was recently recommended by my PCP, so I couldn't have stocked ahead before. I found an excellent source on eBay, and have a good supply on hand after several orders.

I'm getting kinda tired of having to order formerly readily available stuff from Amazon. Prime does have it's uses though. Need to order more food saver rolls today - don't want to be caught short!

And of course, I'll cruise books and see if any of my favorite authors have come out with anything new. Anxiously awaiting delivery of the newest Jim Butcher, long awaited, Dresden Files which should be here next week (hopefully not delayed again).

IF, JUST SAY IF, 25% OF MY PEOPLE ARE SICK......................AND CAN NOT WORK
AND...........................ANOTHER 25% OF MY PEOPLE.....WILL NOT WORK BECAUSE THEY MIGHT GET SICK

SO, ONLY 50% OF MY PEOPLE WORK

SO, PRODUCTION GOES DOWN 50% OR MORE,....COST GO UP 100% OR SO............I CHARGE MORE

OR 50% OF MY PEOPLE WORK TWICE AS LONG EACH WEEK

100% OF MY PEOPLE....ARE PAID "TIME AND HALF" FOR HALF OF THEIR WORK HOURS

SO, COST GO UP 25%...........................I CHARGE MORE

AFTER A FEW WEEKS.................OVERTIME IS NOT FUN ANYMORE

50%, OR 40 OR 30% OF MY PEOPLE WORK REGULAR HOURS

PRODUCTION IS WAY DOWN...................COST ARE WAY, WAY UP....I CHARGE MORE

BUT, YOU SAY IT COST TOO MUCH,.............YOU WILL NOT PAY

IF YOU WILL NOT BUY, I STOP PRODUCTION,
I SEND THE REST OF MY PEOPLE HOME

NO STUFF TO BUY

THE MORE COMPANY'S THAT STOP PRODUCTION

THE MORE THE PRICE WILL GO UP

UNTIL, NO BODY MAKES MY "STUFF"

NOBODY CAN BUY MY "STUFF"

.............MAYBE ON EBAY

I couldn't get any food saver rolls last week on Amazon. Walmart did have 2 boxes of the size I needed, so i took 1.

Terrwyn, are the tweets not showing for you at all? If they don't, I can certainly post what was said.

Could you tell us a little of what is said? I cant access the tweets.

I'll go with the thought that you can't see them at all :-)

First tweet - Shortages of soda and beer promised - Coke and Pepsi now producing only "main flavors" due to a CAN/ALUMINUM SHORTAGE ... ? /pic shows a sign saying Due to a national can shortage, Coca-Cola and Pepsi will be produce fewer flavors. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers.

Second tweet - follows below the first - "As more people drink at home, they're stocking up on cans in grocery stores and tasting rooms instead of going out to bars and restaurants. Curbside and grocery sales of canned beer, hard cider and even wine have grown faster than planned." The latest in Coronavirus shortages: Aluminum cans/ Will aluminum cans have the same fate as toilet paper and cleaning products due to Covid-19? link to pennlive.com

Third tweet - follows below the second - “We have a lot of sodas we cannot get ahold of because they just don’t have the aluminum to make the cans,” Thompson said. Photo shows a sign at Weis markets saying 'Due to a national aluminum can shortage, some items may be temporarily available. We apologize for any inconvenience." Then "National aluminum can shortage affecting Pa. grocery stores. A national aluminum can shortages, caused by an increase of at-home due to the restaurant and bar closures at the beginning of....link to pennlive.com

Fourth tweet - follows the third one - “We have a lot of sodas we cannot get ahold of because they just don’t have the aluminum to make the cans,” Thompson said. Then same pic and statement as in the 3rd.

Fifth tweet - Even Forbes picked it up: followed by a pick of empty grocery store shelves. 'Beer buyers beware - Your favorite brands may go missing this holiday....Coronavirus has adversely impacted sales of Corona and other big brands, just not the way you think it has...followed by a link to forbes.com.

Mine has a "sterilize" function, which I greatly appreciate.
Yes! It's not that I mind doing dishes, but I've got a lot better uses for my time. And since everything we eat is cooked from scratch (family joke: "mom's idea of cooking from scratch is going out and digging the potatoes first!"), and since we grow/produce and then process/can/freeze everything, even with just two of us home, there are a lot of dishes...

But there are two times of the year I just don't want to do without one... holidays and canning season. Being able to run 4 cases of jars through the sanitize cycle while I'm picking the produce saves an hour or more... and with my spine problems, I'd have a choice... either wash the jars by hand or pick the fruit/veggies... too often these days, there's no way I'm going to be able to do both.

Our dishwasher died (bought in 1997... I guess we can't complain!) this spring. Our son found a nice used one... I love it. It has a cycle which only washes the top rack, so during times we're not making a ton of dishes, I can run it using half the detergent and still get stuff clean. It's the first dishwasher I've owned which actually, really *washes* dishes... I'm trying to break myself of the habit of essentially rinsing everything clean before loading it, because it doesn't need it.

As far as aluminum cans... I wasn't able to get the sugar sweetened Pepsi for hubby Monday... he enjoys an occasional soda, and we try to avoid anything with HFCS. But I wonder if they aren't making the cans even thinner, too... I opened a pack of beer in the root cellar yesterday, and three cans rolled off the shelf onto the floor... no more than 18". Instant beer explosion! One can split down the side at least 2"... the other got a puncture (the floor of the root cellar is #2 stone, for humidity management). Damn, what a mess! I swear, those cans weren't any thicker than my heavy duty aluminum foil in the pantry!

I have had a brand new canner in my preps since 2007. I cant remember what kind but I think I got it at Lehmans. I got my grain grinder at Pleasant Hill back then also. Anyway I would have to have DH get it out as I cant do it. probably an expensive one as I bought the good stuff usually. I never got around to canning anything as our gardens fizzled out due to hotter weather and myself getting ill. I would love to gift this to someone younger that is homesteading and with a family. I wouldn't know how to go about choosing someone fairly so if any of you have any ideas let me know. I would imagine shipping would be expensive have to go UPS or Fed Ex and they are out of site but still a lot cheaper than a new canner.

You can probably find someone here. Its a pretty cool place.

Hope this helps.

Gawd I love the dishwasher. It's like the usually shiftless elf population around here on rare occasions actually does some work overnight. Surprise! Clean dishes this morning! Love it.

Oh...and I ain't sweating the can issue with my beloved Diet Coke. Only savages drink it out of cans. I require the 16 oz. plastic bottles. :lkick: I reserve the right to be a Princess about some things.

Reality-wise...if you use a lot of canned goods, pick them up now, a few at a time. Have a plan. I'm not convinced there is a "can" shortage, but I DO know now with recent experience, that as soon as the herd spooks, cans of anything and everything disappear from the shelves.

Me too! Especially during canning season! Got the timing down so that when I start the dishwasher with a load of jars I turn the canner on - by the time it hits the dry cycle, water is ready to go.

And sometimes my resident sock elves even load it at night when I'm too tired or hot to do it and wake up to clean dishes in the morning (I can really rack up dirty dishes when I'm in the throes of creativity).

Just a bit more confirmation on the aluminum can shortage stories. Friend of a family member has a close relative who is a delivery driver that services a route for canned beverages. Just found out out that person has been having difficulty filling some orders.

Here we go again. We seem to be continuing down a rough road. Plan accordingly.

It's just me and DD but we use our dishwasher maybe 2x a week? I use a lot of paper plates and plastic ware LOL.

On the Diet Coke thing I am stocking up a little bit but I think there is actually an expiration date. Not sure but I probably go thru a 12 pack a week. Used to be probably twice as much but I have been drinking a lot more water. I like the plastic bottles but they're a little pricey. Trust me if it comes down to the plastic bottles will be bought. :p

I am back to every shopping trip just picking up a couple extras here and there- toiletries, paper goods, canned goods and cleaning products. I have quite a bit on hand but if things go south I just want to have as much as possible to get us through as long as possible.

DD decided to put off college until spring. I have mixed emotions. With everything going on, I'd rather her be here during the time leading up to the election and not in Los Angeles. But I want her to start her life. She had a great thing going with her music here in town and performing at several venues. Everything stopped in March and I know she misses performing live. I want her to get out there and live life and have fun and learn to be on her own. Right now, she has bought into all the panic and is afraid to leave the house due to Covid. She got really upset because when I bought my new car I took a photo with the sales guy and had removed my mask. He still had his on as did the guy taking the pic but when I say upset I mean complete M.E.L.T.D.O.W.N. I try to talk to her that you know it's good to be cautious but I refuse to hideout in fear. I am not sure if some of it is since losing her Dad she has a very big fear of losing me. All I can do is pray.

That is a shame she is so traumatized. Maybe it would help to talk to someone online. In looking for myself I saw there are all kinds of counselors online. Fear can be incapacitating and very hard to deal with.

I have mentioned that to her. With Cigna we get 8 appointments free and many can be done online. I am going to mention it again.

Please do, but online just isn't the same. The therapist can't pick up on facial cues or body language without in person. Son is going to school to be a counselor so I have an inside line.

Praying for her to reach some understanding and level of acceptance.

Neither here nor there.
I just swiped this off of Facebook from one of the members in the canning group I belong to, I predict a run on the last canning lids in 3... 2.. 1.

"Just a heads up- I know that many of us have noticed a shortage in canning supplies. I went into my local hardware store to grab a few things for canning beans tomorrow, and the manager pulled me aside. She asked if I can quite a bit, and if I have enough supplies to get through the fall canning season as well.

She informed me that what they have is all that they’re getting- that her inventory orders are being cancelled by the supplier and they won’t be able to restock for the forseable future. I’m in good shape- but have also been grabbing a box of lids here and there whenever I’m out an about. Thought I’d pass along the info to you all!"

Good to know because I've been doing the same thing with lids. I'm good on jars and rims, but lids are always a must have.

Still need to get rid of a bunch of jelly jars, but I just deactivated my NextDoor account due to too many Karen's and their awful site popup about your post. Oh well, they can just sit in the basement till the cows come home, which will be never at my house.

Absolutely. I've been grabbing a few boxes and adding to the stash whenever I see them but still leaving some for somebody else. So far the local grocery store has had plenty. Wide mouth seem to be shorter supply, but what the heck...they don't go bad. "Too many" is not a thing.

I needed to run to Walgreens today. No paper products. But they had Coke Zero in both bottles and cans! They also had a very small amount of cleaning products. I added to my pantry.

Kroger tonight was very well stocked and prices not bad except for beef as usual.
They even had some small bottles of alcohol left so I bought another one... (we were told at work that it’s on backorder amd we’re a Vet Clinic! We HAVE to have basic things like that to disinfect and draw blood! We are running out too)

Anyway, bought more cheese for the freezer and yay!... froze now vegetables were stocked again so I bought a lot of peas.

I'm making a Sam's Club run tomorrow. Gonna grab another huge package of toilet paper, some protein bars/powder, and whatever else I can think of. So long as the expiration date is out a ways, I'll be a buyer.

Ok, if there is an aluminum can shortage, and a shortage of the polymer to make plastic bottles (which is the reason I've been told there is a distilled water shortage), what are they going to put beverages in? Are we going back to glass?

Well shortages have finally hit central Nebraska. I usually order for delivery but had to go into town for supplies that can't be delivered every month. As of yesterday very few items on front of shelves. Huge gaps. What I don't understand is supply chain logistics. I have 5 in the family that do transport by tractor trailer. They are over the top busy? So I'm sorry this is a planned shortage. They easily could transport food. Yet NO REQUEST for food transport. Just nonessential supplies that fool dgi's are ordering. Anybody else with logistics that can give a different scenario?
