If your prepared you don't need to panic even though deep concern can look like it to others. This is what panic looks like if your not prepared.

Heard from one of the guys in China that food prices seem to be rising a lot and most factories at the company pushed back reopening for another week again. But, also hearing if they don't get back to work soon many people will "starve" so...

I wonder - if some factories will decide to just open up at night virus be damned and just replace folks as they drop. I remember a couple of years back telling one of the guys over there how sorry I was about the mudslide and all the people lost and he looked at me funny and said "oh it's no problem, we have lots of Chinese people" He was one of the nicest Chinese I know but he had absolutely no feeling at all at the loss of all his fellow countrymen.

You should all realize that on many cases here in CONUS you can't just "start the factory" because you are lucky to have only a factory building shell. Everything, like the machines has been stripped down to bare wall and floor. WE NONLONGERVHAVE THE PHYSICAL INDUSTRIAL BASE ANY LONGER.

The price of used equipment should be going up

Project C.U.R.E. sends shipments to China
Centennial organization, its partners send suits, masks to help with novel coronavirus efforts in Nanjing
Posted Friday, February 14, 2020 10:33 am fair use

Staff report
The rapidly changing situation around the novel coronavirus spread is something Project C.U.R.E. and its partners have been monitoring closely, and the Centennial-based organization has sent two shipments of equipment to help.

The first shipment, sponsored by the International Ministries, contained 4,200 Dupont Tychem suits and 21,000 N95 masks, and they will be delivered to Amity China in Nanjing. The second shipment, sponsored by Cheniere Energy headquartered out of Houston, contains 118,020 N95 masks, which equates to 562 cases. Both shipments will be distributed throughout Wuhan and surrounding areas.

International Ministries and the Chinese government are still in need and looking for more masks and protective medical equipment.

“What China urgently needs at present are medical masks, protective suits, and safety goggles,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a press briefing, according to a news release.

Since 1987, Project C.U.R.E has been delivering life-saving medical equipment and supplies to hospitals and clinics throughout the under-resourced world. The programs are funded by grants from the U.S. government, non-governmental organizations and by philanthropic foundations, corporate partners and individual donors. Learn more at Project C.U.R.E. Guys, just a suggestion. Make sure to have an extra thermometer in your preps. Our son came down with the crud a couple of days ago. Yesterday, taking his temp, it was all over the place!!! 101.2, 99.0, 102.5!!! all within a couple of minutes. And at the time, he'd had Tylenol about 30 minutes before and was feeling better. Thankfully, we had a new thermometer on hand. I'm also going to order a glass thermometer for back up because far as I know, mercury, don't lie!

I looked to see what model nurses use. Seems to be mostly Innovo, got one, works great.

Source several cheap pulse oximeters and enough batteries. They can give you a heads up on your O2 saturation so you can tell if the infection is effecting your lung function and how badly. That way if you have an O2 concentrator your not flying in the dark. I have several of these and they are only $12 a piece.

Went to the local hospital this morning and got a flu shot and a PPSV23 shot (bacterial pneumonia vax.). I know neither will directly help with coronavirus, however the PPSV23 should help with possible secondary infection and I figured what the hell and got the regular flu shot too. With my job and travel required I figure I WILL be exposed, probably sooner rather than later.

Interesting thing, no one in hospital was wearing PPE, no questions about China travel, they did STRONGLY recommend using hand sanitizer before leaving as Influenza is "running wild". Explained reason for vaccines to doctor and she though it made sense, usually only see her once every 2 years for Coast Guard Medical certificate or license renewal and have NEVER before in my life gotten a flu shot.

FWIW

Received a note from one of the satellite equipment places I have purchased from and they source their stuff from China. The pertinent points;

Antenna Production Suspended: Limited Inventory Available

Due to the recent outbreak of the Corona Virus epidemic in China, we have been forced to suspend all production of our antennas. At this time, our supply chains in China have become disrupted and it is nearly impossible to obtain any raw materials or manufactured goods from that country.

We do not know when things will return to normal. Workers are not returning to factories. Ports are not shipping containers. The country is in complete lock down.

We contacted everyone who expressed an interest in purchasing our products in the last two weeks and let them know about the situation and reserved their orders. Now we are releasing a public statement so everyone knows about the pending shortages.

We hope the situation in China gets back to normal soon, but there is no guarantee of that happening. In the meantime, we are looking at other supply chain options, including domestic manufacturing of certain products.

There is an old machinist in my town who has a barrel machine sitting outside in his yard that has just rusted down after the tarps on it disintegrated from weather. The knowledge in that head and the machine in that yard are priceless. How much of this stuff across the country? How much could be restored? How many smart old people?

There were all sorts of articles last year about the big ag machines being unable to get into the fields. They would have sunk in the mud. Crops couldn't be planted in Spring in some areas or harvested in Fall in others.

I think we will be seeing a return to non-mechanized agriculture, and many other steps back before the plague and the GSM are done with us. For some that would be horrible. For me- not so much. Work don't scare me none. Builds character.

True, but once you get old (say over 65), it's hard to work. I would have a hard time with a 40 hour work week. I do housework, but not the heavy stuff. I cook, do dishes, etc. If I had to do all I did on my last job, including a lot of walking and being out in the winter weather, I would not like it. What's that old saying -- the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak?

Many have been stripped. But there are more than a few who could ramp up pretty quick.....

Also, like masks for example.... not too much equipment......

Antibiotics..... we have factories.... just retool a bit and get them going....

The problem is the raw materials.

another consideration.
Steel for example - we gave that to China too

interesting study to some, perhaps...science isn't sexy, but they're chipping away at the things guide future vaccine design and antibody-based drug therapy...which is good for us all.

I had a PT appointment last night (still recovering from a car accident), and during a lull in the leg torture, the PT asked if I had heard about "that virus in China". I said yes, and asked what she had heard. She stated that all the hospital staff had been in a meeting about it that morning (Thursday), and that: "they still didn't know enough about it to establish guidelines for day-to-day operations." EVEN THOUGH they know it's contagious as Hell. But, since they don't know EVERYTHING about it, they're not issuing guidance for it or revising their protective posture.

Normalcy bias and flat-out denial, are real things. We aren't going to stop this thing in CONUS, because soft times breed soft people who can't make logical decisions... It's going to eat the medical community alive.

I would add that every family member should have their own medical tote in the closet or wherever, with, as you pointed out two thermometers, min. So many devices and meds are so affordable, that it was just easier and safer to replicate items for the ind.s sickroom kits.

I can still put in a hard day of labor... probably 8 hours of hard, grueling, manual work... but it takes me about three days. I feel your pain.

Exclusive: Chinese doctors say Wuhan coronavirus reinfection even deadlier
Instead of creating immunity the virus can reportedly reinfect an individual and hasten fatal heart attack

By Jules Quartly, Taiwan News, Contributing Writer
2020/02/14 15:02

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — It’s possible to get infected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) a second time, according to doctors on the frontline in China’s city of Wuhan, leading to death from heart failure in some cases.

The claim is made by doctors working in the Hubei Province capital that is at the center of the epidemic, which has to date infected 64,201 people and killed 1,487. One of the doctors reached out to a relative living in the United Kingdom, who then informed Taiwan News.

Both the relative and doctors asked to remain anonymous, out of consideration they might face retribution from the Chinese authorities. The doctor, Li Wenliang (???), who first raised warnings about the Wuhan virus, was rebuked by the authorities before succumbing to the devastating disease himself earlier this month.

According to the message forwarded to Taiwan News, “It’s highly possible to get infected a second time. A few people recovered from the first time by their own immune system, but the meds they use are damaging their heart tissue, and when they get it the second time, the antibody doesn’t help but makes it worse, and they die a sudden death from heart failure.”

The source also said the virus has “outsmarted all of us,” as it can hide symptoms for up to 24 days.
This assertion has been made independently elsewhere, with Chinese pulmonologist Zhong Nanshan (???) saying the average incubation period is three days, but it can take as little as one day and up to 24 days to develop symptoms.

Also, the source said that false negative tests for the virus are fairly common. “It can fool the test kit – there were cases that they found, the CT scan shows both lungs are fully infected but the test came back negative four times. The fifth test came back positive.”

According to the BBC and other media outlets, some laboratory tests are incorrectly telling people they are virus-free. There is also anecdotal evidence of people having up to six negative results before being diagnosed correctly.

Dr. Li Wenliang first raised concerns about this. His own test results had come back negative multiple times before he was finally diagnosed.

False negative tests raise question marks over how many people have the Wuhan coronavirus, with many believing the Chinese authorities have massively underreported the number of cases and deaths. Meanwhile, the official methodology for diagnosing the virus in China was changed this week, leading to a sudden leap in the number of recorded cases and deaths.

I don't know if this is real. There are only 3 screenshots in the video in that twitter, here they are (I screengrabbed them).

I think this may be a hoax. How did someone get a hold of their friend's father's phone? This could be a cover because it's their father's phone and they don't want to get him in trouble. Who knows. It's easy to fake text messages so take with a grain of salt. It does make sense though of the concern we're getting from the CDC the last few days.

They are opening more US steel factories even before this. I never said it was painless, but we have a unique opportunity here.

It would be wonderful if the end result was more production in the USA. But it may be very interesting getting there.

I used to like interesting but now I'm too old and tired. I just want easy. I don't like all this mess. It's more fun to doom when they doom is not real.

I wish there were a way to confirm this! If this were a private conversation between two people, and they were asking each other to keep it between just them, how did it get all over the internet?

Ok, I should have waited about making my post. I see that there is the possibility of it all being a hoax.

Hmm, I think I will create, more of an off the wall list. I just bought a China made coffee steel coup for Christmas presents. Again, I did find ONE coffee cup, kitchen stuff of any type not made in China. The knives, the cups and glasses, especially the kid stuff, assuming you are buying for a kid get your Disney stuff NOW! The list just goes on and on, as in one of the few things were the plastic storage boxes made by Sterilite that had made in USA on them, but that was all in Target. Some of the clothes were not made on China, but most of the shoes.were. We actually have a Danner shoe store and factory here in Portland, as well as a "Made in LA" clothing store here too. So, it is possible to buy American, here and there, and if you are willing to pay for the premium.

I was barking up this same tree for H5N1. A flow meter would help you set your pedal speed and/or pressure. You could have a crank and an air cylinder (piston in tube style) to give the intermittency of breaths. It could be done.

I'm in the process of hacking the crap out of an older Respironics REMstar Plus CPAP to work as an emergency ventilator if needed. The blower motor is rather controllable and I have two extra pressure sensors now in the case. An arduino is going to be the brains behind it, dropping the speed way down to allow an exhale, and then ramping it back up for a preset amount of time to push an inhale cycle.

It was either the REMstar, or I was going to start from scratch with an EDF 90mm Brushless Ducted Fan Unit from Amazon...

I'm also playing with two 10 watt UVC lights (12V) from Amazon along with a HEPA filter in backpack configuration with a 30mm Brushless DFU for a portable positive pressure breather for if it gets really bad and I still have to go out away from the house. A 12V12AH AGM gives me about 3 hours of runtime with some overhead.
