EBOLA 2nd Confirmed Ebola Case In US (Dallas #2) CDC Confirms 10/12

One of the articles states that people who came into contact with the health care worker are being monitored. I wonder how many people that is, and how many they've overlooked.

If the person worked AT the hospital, as I believe is the case, then there is NO WAY IN H they can find "all" the persons they came in contact with.

Fellow employees, patients, everything the person touched, every person who used a bathroom right after this person did...

FOMITES.

And how long the virus can live on fomites.

NO freaking way.

I do NOT believe these medical care workers were provided PRESSURIZED suits! I believe they only had non-pressurized, ordinary medical coveralls, gloves, mask, face shields and booties. Pressurized suits PROVIDE a safe, SEPARATE, AIR SUPPLY For the health care worker and are BIG TIME EXPENSIVE!

Positive pressure ventilation and suits are not needed to prevent infection from Ebola. However, it makes the health care workers and scientists working with the virus a lot more comfortable to have that cool filtered air impinge against your face and circulate in the suit. I wore the full military MOPP gear with negative pressure mask for years and have been in gas chambers with real nerve agent. The equipment works. However, the equipment is hot, uncomfortable, you sweat like a pig with the sweat running into your eyes, ect. The biggest thing with a negative pressure mask is the seal. You must be clean shaven if your a male and the mask needs to be properly fitted.

With the military mask they come in difference sizes so we used calipers to measure the features of the face to see how big of a mask to use. With most commercial masks one size fits all but in case of an aluminum nose bridge in the P95 masks you should press that against your nose until it takes on the features of your nose as well as cinching up the straps that go behind your neck or your ears. Not so tight that it deforms the mask but tight enough so it's snug. With a full face or half face mask you can cover the inlet of your filter and attempt to breath in deeply. If you can't get any air the mask is sealing properly. I'd bet dollars to donuts that the nurse failed or perhaps wasn't trained in how to take the gear off and/or she made a mistake and was infected.

Agree. If one is worried about people with compromised immune systems how about all the people undergoing chemo for cancer, or type 1 diabetes or some other genetic disorder.
Hate to break it to both of you, but they are ALL important here because the more people who can contract the virus easily (for whatever reason they are compromised) the more potential cases you have to spread quickly and then pass on to others.

Viruses don't care about your sex life, your previous blood transfusions, your chemo or your insulin shots; all they care about is an opportunity to infect a host; and actually I hadn't even though of this one seriously (too much going on) and it is a very good point to think about.

Can the "it isn't Ebola" conspiracy theorists PLEASE start their OWN thread???

I would like to read the NEWS about EBOLA here.

Please be considerate to those of us who do NOT share your view.

And gunnersmom, I am not so much speaking to "you" directly as to the several others who DO hold that view, who may want to discuss that angle in THIS thread.

I am simply asking they do this in their OWN thread, so that THIS thread stays clear for the "it IS Ebola" discussion.

Thank you.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come off that way. I followed up that post a while ago, not realizing (stupidly) that others were saying the same thing. I'll go now because I have nothing worthwhile to add.

Local ABC affiliate has news reporters at the apartment complex interviewing nurse's neighbors! And the police are just standing around.

Agreed!!! It's sooooo annoying that people keep bringing up AIDS. I can't catch AIDS sitting next to an infected person on a plane. I CAN catch Ebola sitting next to an infected person on a plane. Also, a person with HIV/AIDS can live for 20-30 years. A person with Ebola lives for about 20-30 days. Ignorance. SMH

You may be missing the point.
A person with AIDS, who then is infected with Ebola,
may be asymptomatic long after the viral load would be causing a fever
in a non- immunocompromised person.
(allowing them to walk around very infectious for much longer period of time.)

This would also be the case with immunosuppressed people as well...

only thing I can find so far, not the whole press conference.

You can see County Judge Clay Jenkins standing in the back very nervous, eyes all over the place and swallowing hard.

The 48 people in the self monitor pool are health care workers.

Fire and rescue Hazmet team cleaned all common and open areas of apt complex. Mayor said Police not allowing anyone to enter apt complex then later said no one to enter apt.

Thank you. Everyone looks like he's sweating.

At 9am EDT WSB radio played a segment of the press conference.

It's VERY telling what they played.

NOT the 'blah-blah" reassurances of "situation normal; everything under control", but rather:

Reporter: (not word-for-word here) Was the health care worker wearing protective gear?

Spokesman: the healthcare worker was wearing mask and gloves and FULL PPE AS PRECRIBED BY THE CDC PROTOCOL (emphasis mine).

Reporter: Well, then....if the HCW was wearing the CDC-prescribed PPE and STILL got ebola anyway, does that not concern you?

Spokesman: (word for word here) "It's very concerning, yes."

Reporter: And what does that say for people who may have been OR MAY BE EXPOSED, who DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO FULL PPE? Could that indicate it is going airborne?

Spokesman: We are looking into that; we are very concerned.

____________

THEY ARE STARTING TO GET IT, FOLKS;

give the sheeple a couple of days to let this sink in (unless the media gets word to suppress this little exchange, too--but for right now WSB IS PLAYING IT) and ... hoo boy...........

MD being interviewed now, he is very concerned about the second transmission. Dr. Richard Besser says that it cannot be handled by local hospitals, people have to be trained properly so that you do not contaminate yourself which calls for a specialized hospital like Emory, Nebraska, etc. He thinks they should move the pt to one of those hospitals now.

So confusing. One says 48 health care workers under self monitoring another says monitoring 18 patients. I take it this is two different groups?

Dang it!! I missed the conference surfing around the net...tried to follow the link given on page 2 but it's not there anymore. Will there be a taped version to watch?

The Fox KDFW link that I posted appears to have gone from live to rerun, it is currently running at about 7:10 CDST at 9:20am CDST, so the press conference rerun should be starting about 9:35 or 9:40am CDST.

They don't run commercials on this "livestream.com" feed, so if you see a big blue screen with "Fox 4 KDFW WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK", you are watching the stream, but it is just a comercial break.

The news conference referenced above: "There may be a pet inside the apartment ... take care of the pet ...We do not believe that pet has any signs

... at the same time ... we have moved ... Hazmat unit ... over here to Presbyterian ... decontaminated the car that the patient drove in ... secured it so that nobody could come in contact with ...

We put an action team in place ... much work to be done ... make sure you knew ... as soon as you woke up ..."

Sorry for cross posting, got a stream up over here just in time to hear that...patient was following full CDC protections..

No wonder the judge was stumbling for words and clearing his throat at the podium. It's getting real to them now.

I wonder how mad the DOCTORS will be at the CDC for lying to them & telling them everything was going to be just hunky-dory as long as they "followed protocol"?

THEY BELIEVED THEIR CRAP---and now it's coming back to BITE them.....

infighting?

I sure as H HOPE so---so that MAYBE some TRUTH will come out.......

Just like criminals who take part in a crime----once it "gets real" that SOMEBODY is going to go DOWN on a murder rap, the OTHER rats very quickly start jumping ship and POINTING FINGERS AT ONE ANOTHER....."I didn't do that---YOU did that!"

On WFAA channel 8 Dallas abc news live right now is speaking with Dr. Richard Besser former director CDC. The news anchor just remarked that it is now apparent that Dallas is the center of a web of ebola infection and Dr. Besser is advocating that this current ebola patient needs to be transferred to another facility such as Emory.

You completely missed the point. Its not about AIDS patients because they have a compromised immune system its about people who think that AIDS is still a bigger problem than Ebola.

Heh..so whatever happened to that line of horse feces the CDC was handing out back in August when Dr. Brantley arrived? Frieden said at that time any hospital could handle an Ebola patient safely just following standard isolation protocol. Still couldn't believe he said that with a straight face as he knows himself that Ebola is a level IV pathogen. And big problem with transferring a patient is there are only about 20 beds in the whole country in facilities that are level IV equipped. Even a standard negative pressure isolation room doesn't come close to the standard of a level IV facility with multiple airlocks, decontamination showers, UV lighting booths, ect. And then you run into the problem with additional possibilities of infection enroute during the patient transfer as well as just who is going to be paying for all this.

And the CDC is supposed to have their news conference at 11:30 AM Eastern.

Game changer!!

I have to admit that I'm very surprised that this has been admitted to. I thought for sure that additional positives would be suppressed. Wondering now what the status is of the Duncan family and others. If a health care worker in full gear has been infected I find it hard to believe that those that lived in the same apartment are all negative.

I, too, was surprised at first. The difference is that Duncan's family was whisked away out of the public view. The hospital worker was in view of lots of other people that would spread the word. I'm still not convinced that Duncan's family members don't have it.

This is also l likely both because most of the hospital staff are likely to be sent home within the 48 to 72 hours (my guess) and/or replaced with military folks in hazmat suits and more to the point even if it isn't closed down under quarantine with no new patients period; they probably only have one or two beds for Ebola patients and no staff left trained to deal who are not home under "observation."

Ireland for example has Two, count them TWO beds for an Ebola patient which would likely be the first patient and their caregiver/family member. If you suddenly have six, your screwed and the same is true of many US cities and rural areas often have NOTHING.

I had the impression the doctor wanted this information out and waited until the "handlers" left and was spitting it out, looking like a man condemned (both from the information and for what he had just said). Like Dr. Gupta, I think he wanted this known, once said it can not be unsaid - however refusing to answer the question might also have somewhat answered the question.

John, it isn't perfect, but I am planning now to seriously look at the "garbage bag protocols" invented by that lovely young student nurse in Africa who won an award for it; not perfect for sure and perhaps a faint hope but she has proven that sometimes it can provide a barrier to care for an ill family member and would be better than nothing (or just shooting a house-hold member who became ill and then putting a gun to yourself at the first fever).

If I recall it involved full garbage bags with tape everywhere and making or using a masque....

But the problem is...........she was a NURSE..........and had access to IV's, and knew how to GIVE them.

I DO NOT.

Dear God, PLEASE show me how I can save the lives of my boys! Your Will Be Done......

I guess it's time to pick up some more hand sanitizer, rubber gloves and N-95 masks.
This won't be the last one...

Zulu Cowboy

None of which, from my reading, will do you any good.

The only thing I have read--in the scientific STUDIES on ebola, not the CDC crap----that will KILL ebola virus germs, is 100% chlorine bleach or that special antiseptic hospitals use (benxohexidrene or however it's spelled).

The rubber gloves have to be CHEMICAL-grade

And N-95 is not enough; it has to be at least N-100 and even then you are only good for about a 20-minute usage of one mask and then it has to be thrown away and cannot be re-used.....

He was cleared and sent home

Wonder how many more days before HE will show up at some ER in Dallas with advanced symptoms?

Or will he also--like the family---simply be "disappeared" and never heard from again? (except for press statements read by others that don't sound a BIT like him)

The reason I posted the info on HIV/AIDS is that I've read that the Ebola is worse on victims with compromised immune systems. With what? 38 Million on earth with the HIV? Most are in Africa. .btw..

I think a talking point has been released. Multiple news channels are asking the same question as to whether or not only specific facilities should handle Ebola patients. That in and of itself might make sense but they are all asking that question. Cue up the Hegelian dialectic perhaps.

I wonder if the "multiple news channels" will report that the entire USA has a total of 21 beds available at any one time in ALL available Level 4 facilities.

21.

I wouldn't have a problem with a N95 mask myself. The virus is .03 to .40 microns in size which in and of itself can easily penetrate both the N95 and N100 mask. It would be a problem if the virus was truly airborne in a scientific sense. However, since best understanding is the virus has to ride on water molecules your N95 mask is an effective barrier to moisture outside the mask. However, if the mask becomes saturated with moisture or after use and the mask dries out and you attempt to use it again the mask won't protect you anymore. That is why they are disposable and shouldn't be reused especially if your in an area with known infection. If the N95 was all I had I would be comfortable using it while I distance myself from the infected area.

I just don't think it's right that this family has literally disappeared. WHY are they not being allowed to even give an update on their conditions. I wouldn't want to be whisked away and not heard from at all. I don't think we should be ok with that even if they might get or have ebola. I KNOW they can get a cell phone into wherever they are. They should at least be able to give an update. I wonder if they are being allowed to speak to anyone. The daughter and her children seem to have vanished off the radar as well.

EXACTLY.

And I wish to God the PRESS would start asking the CDC about this.

Why did they notify a 4 block radius? Could it be they were walking the pet in the apartment in that radius? Who is the one in quarantine, the husband/bf?

Guess what unnerved me the most was the nervousness of the news broadcast. If anyone finds a replay please post.

Yes, please do.
