It is a BEAUTIFUL day here! Between DH and I and helper, we have finished the vertical supports for the new carport, bucketed up chicken feed and put in the hen house for the next good while, harvested cabbage and gotten it stored in a non-working freezer (will do a blog post on that later), harvested carrots and onions, cleaned the garage, one load of laundry, changed the sheets, made cookies, French toast, and tuna casserole. And it's only 1:20!

We went to the city today and topped off a few more things on my list...I think I'm close to done. I'm playing it by ear for the next week or so. All we have left is to add a little more fuel to the preps and we'll be as good as we can afford to be.

While we were there, we dropped off a load of stuff at my big antique booth, went by a couple of the larger Dollar Trees for things ours is always out of, bought both grands some boots at Academy and met our oldest DS at Wendy's for supper...the grands picked the location.

I'm exhausted and I hope a good night's sleep will help with that...part of it may be my motion sickness from riding home from the city in the dark. The hills and valleys are beautiful and worth suffering through it though.

I need to dedicate the next few days to the fall garden and then start getting things together for the Christmas open houses at the shops I have booths in...they start them early here. I've been collecting vintage Christmas items since right after Christmas last year and just I hope I have something that will appeal to the shoppers.

My last prep will be the house cleaning I mentioned before..can't wait to do a deep cleaning on this place and take some of my stuff to the antique booths, burn some and pack some. I'm getting better at letting it go. Don't feel bad for me, I have way too much stuff and it's starting to feel more cluttered than warm and inviting not to mention there will be less dusting involved going forward.

I pray this is all a non-event and if it's not, I pray we all have just what we need to get to a better spot, rather it be location or supplies or family members.

We went to the post office Friday to get my package. My pulley for the well was damaged in shipping. How do you bend and cut steel in shipping? A new pulley should arrive Wednesday. We will return ship the damaged one Tuesday when we go to town.

We need to get several new handles for various tools. I pick up rakes, shovels, and other tools as I find them priced cheap. The local auction has been a good place. I hope to pick up several handles tomorrow. That was a hole in our preps I had over looked.

My neighbor ended up with 25 chicks I hatched. 22 are good strong babies, but the 3 late hatchers are weaker. They may not make it. But she will give them every opportunity to do well.

We have been working on fire wood. We had bought some few years ago that after it was dumped, we saw it had pieces that were too long. This is the year we need to burn it so we are going through it. We are moving it to the spot that had some of last years leftover wood. That will leave us an empty space to put the new wood we are cutting. All the long wood will be cut to fit our stove. We should finish that up today. Hubby will be glad to have that chore done. It has been on the list a long time.

Everyone have a blessed week.

in regard to the pully you received damaged - you might have been the end recipient of an insurance scam >>> crap gets damaged in the warehouse by the idiot workers - they keep the damaged goods aside for individual orders like yourself - insurance claim gets filed with the shipper and they ultimately get a double sale .....

Cary has a doctor's appointment with his Urologist this afternoon. We'll get the results of his CT scan. Praying for good news. One more to go if this one is normal. We will both be so glad to get rid of this group of doctors. They have been nothing but a pain in the butt, since he started using them. It's not so much that the doctors are bad. It's their staff that is incompetent.

That's about all we have going on today.

That explains a lot. I think I've been the victim of that a time or two. Especially when a metal item is broke and the box it came in had nary a blemish but the inside box the manufacturer put the item in was torn to heck and back.

That's what we do. We don't buy anything like that new unless we have no choice but I've noticed they are getting more and more scarce. There use to be an old man that set up at the sale barn north of here that sold new handles for about anything you could think of from a shovel to a hatchet and his prices were very reasonable...we are both sorry we didn't stock up on his stuff but money was pretty tight back then. The new handles we find now cost almost as much as the tool they are made for.

I had a bad night from coughing and not getting much sleep. However, I've been up for several hours and had a nice big hot cup of bullet proof coffee and I think I feel better. I had not been using cough drops because of the carbs in them but I gave in and they are helping.

DH has a dental appointment this afternoon to get a tooth extracted and I have to go with him in case he can't drive afterwards. Fortunately I'm starting to feel up to it. My nose looks like Rudolph.

Needless to say I've gotten less done than I usually don't do.

Tomorrow I have an appointment at the VA for a regular check up. I'm not sure I'm going to tell her about my carnivore way of eating. I'm sure she would not approve.

The box was too big for that pulley. It's heavy, so it was sliding back and forth in the box. The box looked pretty rough. No doubt it was dropped and maybe run over by a fork lift. I am sending it back in a smaller box with lots of packing that it didn't have in the original box.

Relating to last week's conversation about brooms, I have a question about brooms and sweeping that I was asked by either one of my nephews or one of my grandsons (I have four of each) years ago. When you vacuum, it's called vacuuming; when you dust, it's call dusting so why when you're using a broom is it called sweeping instead of brooming. I think of that each time I'm sweeping with the broom! For the life of me I cannot remember which of the boys asked me that. The youngest of the "boys" turned 30 in May.

Yesterday I was miserable and watched church on U-tube instead of going out. Stayed in my pajamas all day. Today is better but beyond doing dishes I doubt much will be accomplished. I did work outside for about 20 minutes clearing a flower bed of stuff ready for mowing it and covered the a/c unit. I had seven or eight of the outside lights so pulled those and cleaned them, then tested which worked and threw two away. Several stakes were missing but I was able to take two off what got tossed so am only short one. I'll put the lights back out after the flower bed is mowed.

The washer repairman is coming later this afternoon. I'm praying I don't need to replace the machine. It's about 12 years old which I guess is "old" for today's machines. Used to be you could count on a washer lasting 20 years with few repairs. Guess that's what I get for trading in a working machine. In preparation for retiring, we replaced the washer, stove, fridge, deep freeze, carpeting, vinyl in kitchen/laundry/dining and vehicle. The washer has never been a favorite and neither is the carpet but everything else is golden.

I finally found canned hams at Walgreens...been looking for a while. They are only twelve ounces but much better than nothing. When I found them, they were on sale with the sale ending at midnight and it was close then so I ordered the maximum amount of 12 at a little over $3 each and free shipping.

It took a few days for them to ship and it was split into two shipments. The first one held ten and they came in a box that was not professionally packed...a few pieces of bubble wrap and lots of empty space. Miraculously, they came with only one tiny dent in one can. The next package shipped from Tennessee containing two hams and it sailed right on past Arkansas, heading for California where it stayed for several days before finally coming back in my direction...they eventually got here about a week late and in a brown, well worn, unpadded envelope and well dented but could have been worse. They still seem to be well sealed with the vacuum in place so I'm keeping them. They came Fed-Ex.

I'm not having the best luck with shipping lately. I ordered from All Day Chemist about four weeks ago and thank goodness I wasn't desperate for any of it because a few days after it shipped, the tracking number quit working. I finally messaged them this morning and haven't heard back yet but they are in a different time zone. If I don't hear something by tomorrow, I'm calling. It said my package would be here by 11-6 when it first shipped so I'm not concerned yet. I should have addressed the issue sooner but life has been busy. Considering my last few shipments have been here in three weeks, it may be lost.

Picking up odds and ends here and there. More toilet paper. Going to Walmart tomorrow for a few things. Did an order with Amazon that will be here Saturday. Just trying to hang loose. Did two loads of laundry today. Tomorrow they are coming to cut 4 trees down from around the house. Been lucky with the hurricanes, but don't want to push our luck anymore.

I'm focusing on emergency communications this week. After binge watching so many lesson learned from Helene, I figure it's been a while and I need to take a deep dive into coms. Made a connection with an active HAM about a mile from where dad lives. Ditto on sister's homesteads. Helped an inner core person program a handheld for local repeaters and MAG group. Got out everything, dusted it off, tested it out, and generally updated a few plans and checklists. Feeling better about that, now.

Only worry about what you can control!
I just got back from a four day cold weather camping trip, where I put my emergency preps to the test. Lows at night ranged 26 to 28 degrees.

The new Napier truck bed tent system with the Linkz add on room worked perfectly. The diesel heater sipped fuel and kept the tent well over 60 degrees at night.

The 5 gallon water filter I made with 5 gallon buckets and 4- 9” Berkey filters kept plenty of on hand safe water from the creek for washing and cooking. We made drinking water from the creek several ways including the sawyer 100,000 gallon filters and tried some purification tabs.

The cook stove made meals easy and the camp stove oven proved its worth.

No propane lanterns, just Ryobi 18volt lights and plenty of battties, I never drained a single battery in 4 nights. I had a really small 800 watt generator ready in case I needed to charge them.

Where we camped there is no WiFi, cell signals or electricity. I put myself in a similar situation to those in North Carolina and found myself in a position , that could have gone on for a long time. I feel confident that we are ready for any evacuation situation, everything can be loaded and moved in under 30 minutes including enough food for months.

My confidence is even higher for long term grid down scenarios at home, with solar panels , wood heat stove, wood cook stove, huge propane storage, refrigeration and freezers that can run on solar.

All in all it was a 100% passing test. Very tiny if any change for adjustment.

We made it back from the doctor's office with great news! No cancer. He will have one more scan next year. It is recommended that he get one every two years from here on out, but without the contrast. It's not likely that the cancer will return, but it's not impossible, so a scan every other year will be prudent.

We're both tired, and we'll probably just have a bowl of ice cream for supper. Not really hungry, since we had leftover pizza for lunch.

Exact thing happened to me this order from ADC. I called and they reassured me it was in transit. It did arrive about 10 days late but all intact!

DH got his tooth extracted today, we went to walmart to get the scrip filled and pickup ice cream for him. I got the cheese slices I'd forgotten on my last pick up and grabbed a combination sandwich. I started to take a bite and almost choaked on the bread (ugh), I didn't want it anyway so I peeled it off and shared the meat and cheese with DH. He was hungry too and neither of us had eaten. Just goes to show that when I'm thinking of eating something not on my diet that I really don't want it. My cough drops (which are helping) have carbs (5 each) and the taste of that bread that I spit out didn't hurt too much.

I think it did me good to get out of the house, but I'm really tired. Maybe I won't be coughing my head off at my doctors appt tomorrow. I sure hope I can sleep tonight. My coughing situation has really improved since last night, I'm blessed.

I love camping and still have my 10 x 10 tent. I can set up by myself with great effort, but I don't want to camp alone. Even though Iowa has open carry laws, you are not allowed weapons in state parks. I still have most of the rest of my camping equipment and could camp if forced. I do not have a heater so no cold weather camping. The coldest weather we ever camped was in the low 50's upper 40's at night. Summer weight sleeping bags on cots with mattresses and wool blankets both under and over sleeping bags. I put a pillow above the top of my head __| which also helped.

The washer repairman came this afternoon, and the news is not good. The washer is 13 years old and needs a $400 repair. I decided not to have it repaired and will go to town when I feel better and purchase a new one. The repairman said that the expected lifetime of a washer today is ten years. Degusting but that's the way it is. I asked the repairman if I could still use the machine, and he said he would not recommend it because it could damage it beyond repair. Since I'm replacing it, I did a load of wash of badly needed socks and undies. If it self-destructs, so be it. Interestingly enough he said, it was best not to mix loads with heavy and light items as that leads to the off-balance issues. If I was younger, I think I'd buy a wringer washer that will last for 50 years with no issues and forget all the EPA approved, electronic crap machines that we're forced to buy today.

I have a good-sized list for Walmart which I plan to take care of the same day. I'm sick of driving to town after weeks d-i-l was in the nursing home and hospital there. Spent more on gas in three weeks that I typically spend in three months. Once a month shopping has saved me a bundle through the years. I don't really need groceries, but will cruise the aisles and pickup whatever catches my eye to add to my preps. I'm thinking of buying and freezing some mozzarella for pizzas this winter. I have an excellent pizza crust recipe and all the other fixings on-hand but no mozzarella cheese.

I have a block of yeast that has never been opened that's been in the freezer for years. Do you think it would still be viable? I suppose I should open it and test it to find out. If it's good, I could put in vacuum sealed bags and back into the freezer. If not, it would be wise of me to replace it pdq. Project for tomorrow.

I brought up a box of empty quart jars to get water into, boiled and sealed. I think that would be an easy job for this week while I'm feeling like crap. I found a good-sized space to put the jars of water and took down the four I did a week ago. I need to clean the shelf before adding more, but thought my head would fall off if I leaned over to do so today. I always store water on the bottom shelf as it is heavy and might leak. The quarts aren't going to leak so that's not an issue but with glass jars weight is an even bigger issue.

I'll bet it's fine! I'm currently using yeast from 2014...having finally used the last of the 2008 yeast in 2022!

I open the vacuum sealed brick, pour some into an 8 ounce jelly jar, then put the rest into one or two pint jars and immediately put them back in the freezer. No vacuum seating necessary... when I run out in my "working jar" in the fridge, I refill it from the freezer jar.

Thanks. I'll open, test and then refreeze. I think it might be older than 2014!!

It's been Monday - at least half the day. Got yelled at by a patient, my coffee was not strong enough, then I went to the post office on my lunch break. I pulled in, took the key out of the ignition (no key chain), and it slipped out of my hand and between the seats. It took me almost 15 minutes to find it and fish it out! In the meantime, a guy pulled in and went to the liquor store next door. When he came out, he looked at me and said, "Ya want a beer? You kinda look like you could use one!" I said, "Thanks, but my employer kinda frowns on that. Otherwise, I'd take you up on it!"

You know you're having a rough day when complete strangers offer you alcohol at the post office!!

At least you could retrieve the key. One day at the post office to pick up the office mail, I put the keys in my pocket, got out of the car and then decided it was too warm for the jacket, took it off and tossed it back in the car, locked it and went into the post office. I don't recall the how of it, but I had the extra key. Maybe in my purse or on the key chain with the key to the post office box.

Check into a Speed Queen washer. They are old school technology and last I knew, you could still get one without any digital gizmos. They are a little spendy but can go for years with no repairs.

Thanks for responding...that's been my gut feeling. I didn't call but did that message thing earlier today but haven't had a response. I'll call tomorrow.
They sent me a working tracking number and chastised me a little for being concerned since it's only been three weeks since it was shipped and they plainly state it takes longer.

I wasn't concerned about the amount of time that had passed, I was concerned that I had a dead tracking number that worked originally which I still find strange.

Surely they could see this is not my first rodeo and I have placed multiple orders over a several years span and this was definitely out of the norm. Strike one.

Edited to add....the tracking number was the same as the original. I can only guess why it quit working.

Anna I agree with Wildwood. Speed queens are the best. No computer junk. Spins the clothes so well that the drying time is reduced greatly. Clothes aren't as heavy when loading into a laundry basket or dryer because they don't have so much water in them. They are a bit pricey and we had to wait for several months for one but that was during covid. Our old machine was a maytag that was at least 30 years old so we got our money out of that one! The speed queen also doesn't have a water governor on it allowing more water to be used per load. The guy we bought ours from said the company pays a fine to the lovely US government to allow them to be manufactured without the governor. They are also USA made.
We are headed to doc today which takes up the whole day. Hubs labs have doubled in the last 3 months. Just reading that an actual human trial for fenben has been completed which gave the recipients 4 times the amt of fenben that we were using without any untoward liver issues. We started that yesterday. In the long term i am peaceful but in the short term I am a bit panicky. I will find my way!
Wildwood stand your ground!
Have a great day everyone!

Doctors appointment day today. And thank God I'm feeling better. And while I like the cooler weather I'm glad its still warm during the day, which negates the need to use the wood stove. If we don't use the wood stove then the electric bill would double. DH suggested I wear a mask and I immediately said no, but now I'm wondering if it might help.

I can get by without a cough drop now which means I can get back 100% carnivore. I'm still feeling so much pain relief from it, even though I did eat off, that its totally worth what ever it takes to stay 100%. I'm hardly ever hungry and when I am it doesn't take much to fill me up. What a blessing.

We're getting a break from a trip into Tupelo today. I'm spending the day doing laundry for the week and cleaning a bit. We'll be gone the rest of the week, so I'm trying to get things done today. Cary is still on light duty, until Thursday.

I forgot to mention that there were no signs of kidney disease on Cary's scan, either. His creatine levels were back to normal, too, so no lingering effects of the contrast.

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon with my Ophthalmologist. I might need new glasses. My vision has changed so much, but I don't know if new glasses will fix the problem. We'll see.

Thursday, Cary gets his staples pulled. He has had absolutely no problems with the loop recorder.

I have my first of the month shopping lists all made out. We're not going to be able to get to the grocery store, until the day before the election. I didn't want to call it that close, but it is what it is. I'll be topping off a few items and getting a bit extra in case we have to "lock up shop" for a while if the election doesn't go well. Better be safe than sorry. I won't be adding anything to storage. Just a bit extra of things I buy anyway (produce, fruit, eggs, milk, etc.)

Girl friend and I made a large run tog Costco yesterday... grabbed a lot of stock up/top off items...this will be our last run there until after the election.... maybe if things remain ok...
Still have a few top off items to grab here and there...but they are close to home..so we have several days to get those things in short quick runs...for last minute things
We have already voted and paid property taxes for the end of the year...and getting ready to pay health insurance until January.. Bill just came yesterday.

We had a Maytag before our Speed Queen too. When we got our Speed Queen, there was a shortage and we also had to get on a list. Our Maytag was on it's last leg but working and life was hectic so we got the SQ set and we had to store it for a while. We decided we'd wait until the Mayag gave up it's last gasp...it took a year lol.

Before the Maytag we had a Kenmore we bought new when we got married. It lasted almost thirty years. At the same time we got the Kenmore, my grandmother gave us her Kenmore dryer...my parents gave it to her when they got a new one. It had dried my sisters diapers. By the time we got the Maytag set it was way over thirty years old and worn slap out. I hope the SQ lasts that long.

Is anyone besides me getting very nervous about election day? I know that God already knows how this is going to play out, but my anxiety is building. It's what comes after that has me so nervous.

Also, we will be voting at our little country precinct that has less than 200 registered voters, but we'll also be in Tupelo that day for Mom's doctor appointment. I'm nervous about being in a city the size of Tupelo on that day.

Am I just being silly, or do you all feel the same?
