I ordered 2 herd books that were recommended somewhere on this forum. The first is Medicine from the Heart of the Earth by Sharol Tilgner. The second one is The Medicine Makers Handbook by James Green. I have 2 by Rosemary Gladstar and one other author I can't recall at the moment. Hopefully they will be helpful if medication becomes hard to get. My faith in the medical community overall is pretty slim already. I have individuals in the medical community that I trust though.

We worked on firewood yesterday. Some we bought a couple of years ago was too long. We picked through and put aside the long pieces. Yesterday we cut off the ends on half of it. Hopefully we will finish it today. We loaded the porch wool rack yesterday too. We need to brush the flue today and clean that out. It looks like we will be needing to build a fire this week.

Prayers going up for everyone here.

I had to build our first fire of the season in the heater last night. Low 40's and rain. Suppose to warm into the upper 50's, today. No more rain for a few days. There are some minor things I'd like to get done outside in the next few days, but it's only cutting back old flowers, so no big deal if it doesn't get done. I have a new garden wagon for bringing more firewood to the house, which helps me a lot, until Cary feels better. He never bothers with the wagon. He just brings it up to the house and inside by the arm loads.

I changed Cary's closet out, yesterday. As I was going through all his winter clothes, I realized that he needed more winter shirts. He had received a new Cabela's catalogue while in the hospital, and I had him look through it. He ordered two new shirts and more wool socks.

He's doing better, but his BP is still going up and down. Doctor doesn't want him to restart his BP med, until it stabilizes a bit more. I'm keeping it checked twice a day. He ate a good supper last night, and is drinking plenty of water and some ginger ale. He got Sprite Zero while in the hospital, and he likes it better, so that's what I'll get when I go shopping in a couple of days, hopefully.

He has a follow up appointment with his PC doctor on Friday.

Got the roof put on the green house, luckily the wind wasn't blowing! I'm going to thin my bok choy, I'll give my sister a bag.

Got the Walmart order emptied and onto the shelves. I'm running out of space plus I think one of my shelves is overloaded. This week will be focused on meat and canned dog food. I'm afraid of not being able to get Biljac so I need a backup for Bob the dog.

Prayers for everyone here.

Not shaping up to be a good week...
Found out yesterday that my closest neighbors are moving. They spent a fortune remodeling their place last year, and I can't believe they decided to leave it. He said they don't plan to rent or sell at this time. I may have to go back to work to be able to buy it, I don't want anybody else living that close to me...
Another neighbor died a couple mos. ago, I didn't really know him, we'd just wave on the road. I wouldn't have known him if he wasn't in his truck with his dog. He had about 300 acres and I have a fear of a subdivision going up on it.
I spent 45 minutes last week looking for one of Mom's cookbooks and never did find it.
Years ago, I had a bunch of stuff stored at her house in between moves, and one day I went to visit and found out that Dad gave away my bookcase and some of my books. I spent a couple hours loading the rest of them up, but I didn't have anything to put them in when I got home, so they pretty much stayed packed up and crammed wherever I could find a space in a cabinet to stick them. (My cats LOVE to destroy my books --- they NEVER offer to touch anything of dh's and he leaves stuff all over the place) Most of my stuff is old and out of print now.
I cleaned out a wardrobe and moved a bunch of stuff and found a throw that I don't even remember having and a bedspread and 2 blankets that I had thought had been disposed of years ago. And I found an old time travel romance that I really liked that I thought was gone as well. I've got thru less than half my books and still haven't found Mom's cookbook, but at least I'm making some progress.
Hope everyone starts feeling better soon!

Thank you for getting the thread started, Briches!

Glad to hear that Cary is doing better, SouthernBreeze!

I'm looking forward to getting back to 'real' prepping after at least a month's worth of focusing on other things. I did pick up 24 cans of cat food on my way home from work the other day to add to what I already have stocked; and added another bag each of cat and dog food on my way home from work this past Friday. I've about got all the laundry detergent I had stocked moved from under the basement kitchen sink to the utility closet - have to clear another shelf in the utility closet before I can move the last 20 jugs; so will try to finish that up; then will use the area under the sink to store the canned cat food and smaller bags of dry cat food.

I have quite a few cans of dry milk, but those are long term storage so I try to keep a stockpile of bagged dry milk on hand as well. I'm going to see if I need to rotate out some of it - it gets used a lot more in the winter than in the summer as Hubby makes up 1/2 gallon jars of hot cocoa mix to take to work. I may need to make up a quart jar for myself to keep at work - may buy some flavored dry creamer to change up the taste; hazelnut might be good. This is the recipe that we use, but we double it:

Hot Cocoa Mix
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup instant nonfat dry milk
1 cup powdered creamer
3/4 cup cocoa powder

I'm going to try to do a couple of deals at CVS when I go to daughter's town to hand out Hallowe'en candy. The one I'm going to try for today will be for Boost - Buy 4/Get $10 ECB. I've got 2 - $4/off 2 coupons. I hope that I can do the deal, but they haven't had many protein drinks in stock recently. The coupons expire today, so if CVS doesn't have them in stock, I'll try Wal Mart. Then there is a Charmin deal - spend $20/get $5 ECB. I'll have to wait to see if I end up with any of the $1/1 Charmin coupons before I try the deal.

I've got another weird work schedule - had three off, work tomorrow, then have three more off before working Fri/Sat. I was foolish enough to agree to be on 'super-secret' call for one extra shift at work this week - it isn't written down anywhere and I'll deny it to the death to anyone but the one co-worker who conned me in to it  The money would be nice to have - especially since I don't know how much longer we're going to be able to get by with weekly testing vs vax - but the doc who is on this week is not my fav - he admits a lot of ASPD type patients, and getting threatened all the time gets old...

It's starting to look like rain outside - hope it either holds off or waits until after Trick or Treat! I'm going to have to cover the plants on the porch tonight; then get most of them carried inside tomorrow as it's supposed to get down to 32*F in the early hours of Monday, and down to 28*F Tuesday night. I should probably go out here in a bit and throw some leaves over my sweet potato beds as well as I have some sweet potatoes that are barely under the soil in a couple of my beds. Might as well go do that now, I guess....

Take care all; stay safe out there!

Prayers from this corner, as well! I hope everyone gets to feeling a lot better this week.

Last two days have been in the upper 50s / low 60s with wall-to-wall sunshine. I've been spreading manure and mowing, trying to finish the yard work. I'm taking a break at the moment to log in and catch up.

The senior snow birds are leaving for GA and FL. There were about 10 RVs at the pumps this morning when I drove by the gas station. For safety, a number of them are traveling in convoys this year. I'm hearing that there have been problems with would-be robbers at the rest areas, and that this info isn't making the news.

I was hoping Judy would check in. So glad Carey is getting better.

I've been low energy and pretty worthless. I need to take off a couple of days to just work at home. I'm canning unsweetened applesauce today. Last of the apples thank goodness. I ordered hubs some hoodies he needed for working outside. The one I wanted from Carhartt was 60 + 13 for s/h on Amazon. Um, no. It's seems we won't get to travel for Thanksgiving so I bought a turkey, $26 for 13 lbs, but it is one with no abx, fed vegetarian diet, ect. Kroger had no butter ball turkeys only kroger brand. Walmart had Perdue brand for 0.89 put lb. We had to switch wet dog food because our brand has not been available for awhile. I've misplaced my best flashlights, so I bought some more. That's all I can think of. Seems like most things have been negative lately. Hoping and praying for better days.

Renee, hope your shifts go well.

Cary still has a bit of chest and head congestion. I've read that pineapple is good for that. I have no pineapple of any kind in the house. What is the best to get? He doesn't want juice, so would frozen or canned be best? I have no idea how to peel a whole pineapple, I'm ashamed to say. I've never bought a whole pineapple in my life.

Sherree, just grab a knife and go at it! I don't think there is any wrong way. I just leave the "bark" on the outside and use that to hold it by as I eat down to the skin. It's messy, but so good!
If you don't want to buy a whole one, I would think that frozen would be easier on his throat.
I make smoothies in the blender with just fruit, milk, and a little bit of powdered milk. Cary might like one of those.
Good luck! I hope he feels better soon!

Thanks. I'm concerned that he still has this chest and sinus congestion with a cough. He is about finished with his two oral antibiotics. He took a cold while in the hospital, and his doctor wasn't too concerned, but with already having pneumonia in one lung, I don't want to take any chances. He doesn't have a temp. I think pineapple is something I could get him to eat.

If you have never cut one, you may not make the best choice in purchasing a good ripe one. I would go with canned. The canned pineapple stings your lips less too.

Good, fresh pineapple is the food of the gods when it is ripe, but be prepared to make a huge mess in the kitchen. The juice will run everywhere.

Here's a simple phlegm fighting list.

I hope he's doing deep breathing every 30 to 60 min. Did they give him a flow meter to breathe in to at the hospital?

You could take pineapple juice and freeze as a popsicle or slushy.

Get him to sit outside a get some vitamin D too.

Give his doctor an update when abx is done, or before if needed.

Edited: didn't like my wording.

No, on the flow meter. He was under O2, level 4 at the highest point. I'm keeping his O2 checked here at home. Yes, he's doing deep breathing, and went for a little walk outside, today.

Thanks for the link! I'm printing it out.

I buy it fresh if at all possible. Basically I just cut the top off and then slice it in half and then pieces. Cut the rind off or eat around it. That thick stem part is like a tube up through the middle of the pineapple.
If you can even get canned, maybe put it on a little ice cream?

For ease you could also buy pineapple already sliced in the produce section. Yes, I know it’s more expensive, but when you are tired and caring for someone, sometimes it is worth it.
Muellin tea (not sure how to spell it) also helps with respiratory illness. Hubby recently had “something” - I doubled up his vitamins and added that tea to it as well with some honey. It helped him a lot. I ordered it from Amazon.

Sherree, frozen pineapple juice is as good as fresh. But a whole pineapple isn't difficult... and I'll bet there are multiple YouTube about it. So, look for frozen, but if you have to get a fresh one, you can do it!

Canned juice isn't useless, but is MUCH weaker than fresh or frozen.

yes on the pineapple juice. And if you can get him to eat yogurt, even better. Some type of probiotics - like what is in yogurt is a must after antibiotics to replace some of the good bacteria in the gut. If he will do it, chicken broth with poultry seasoning will help loosen stuff as well, and the herbs in it are antibacterial - rosemary, sage, thyme.

I am tired. We butchered 80 chickens today with the help of some friends who wanted to learn how. We had done my older layers (that will be turned into chicken salad and canned) and some fast growing cornish crosses. They really did turn out nice, and DH figures we have about $11 in each bird. Not bad considering the price of feed, the price of chicken in the stores, and how much better ours taste.

DH started up the wood stove for the first time tonight. I know he is hesitant to go to it due to my lung issue, but honestly, I am doing so much better. Lunch was chili, cornbread, leek soup, and pumpkin cake. Supper will be leftovers.

We start our bi-weekly testing tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. Already I get texts every day to try to get me to work extra - and what they are paying is outrageous - but people are still saying no. I don't know if it's from burnout (most likely),being pissed about the mandate (also part of the problem), or just being tired and realizing that no amount of money replaces you in your kids' lives.

Progresso canned soup on sale, there was a limit but hey sometimes you take what you can get.

Will be checking on thickness of cans from now on. Got some cheap organic beans in ultra thin metal cans on sale a few weeks ago. They dent super easy, not good candidates for storage. The beans in the cans didn't look right, like they were not cooked long enough. They tasted ok but were miserable for gas. I know TMI. Good thing DH loves me.

Cary is doing much better this morning. He's up and about wanting to do his normal chores. I don't want him doing too much all at once, though. The congestion is much better, too.

I'm going to try to get to the grocery store tomorrow. I'm all out of yogurt, which is something we both like, and I'm sure will help him out. I'm going to stock up on pineapple juice and canned pineapple chunks. I will get him some fresh pineapple from the produce section in those little plastic containers. We also need more vit. C and eye drops. I'll also be doing my bi-monthly grocery shopping. I don't think Cary is up to shopping with me, but he may go, and stay in the car. He really doesn't like me going out and about by myself, and I don't like doing it much, either. Exceptions are made when warranted, though.

Sam's shopping will be done Friday while in big town, after seeing Cary's PC doctor for his follow up visit. I have several items for storage I want to get.

I got a notice this morning that my new wedding band has arrived at the store, so I'll be picking that up Friday, too. Yeah, we spent our 45th anniversary in the hospital. I'm just thankful that he's still alive!

I built a small cantilever rack to hold my scraps of wood that I can afford to get wet. It keeps them out of the dirt.

Finally finished the frame work for the Chicken coop in a manner that I am happy with. I had to cobble together a system due to lack of materials at the local hardware store, but then they got what I wanted, so I redid it this weekend. Now it is secure.

Started the framing for the door for the coop. Using a metal door so that it doesn't rot. I should have pictures when I am done.

The front is on the greenhouse, we're expecting a frost/freeze Thursday. Even without the sides I'm going to put the blackberry cuttings and a few other things in there. I'll cover the greens, they pretty are hardy. I need to find some rain barrels, we are going to run a gutter on the front of it. I want to paint the back of the greenhouse and the wood at the bottom, but there is rain forecast until after Wednesday.
Laundry needs to be done, blanket season is here already.
I've got several boxes of stuff to donate. Trying to downsize the stuff in the house.
I'm emptying a bookshelf in the office for preps.

Prayers for everyone and better news from those who are ill!

New freezer is working great. Wife has been slicin' and dicin', blanching....and has it over half full of veggies and fruit. On a whim, looked for availability of another. Still a few around, but $50 more than two weekes ago.
Had a guy drop off a couple cases of dog food off. Not the best (Pedigree) but the boys will eat it as long as it is mixed in with their dry food.
Grabbed 400# of salt for water softener and more water filters. The filters had been out of stock for a few months.
Double checked the chimney for obstructions & loaded the firebox so that's all ready.

Slow and steady here …. Made a list of things we will need for Thanksgiving and will go ahead and get that this week.
I’ve also been working on getting Christmas presents squared away.

I am about to do my “menu plan” for the week. This will help me use up things so nothing is wasted as well as shop the ads and try to stick to my health goals.

Prayers continue for so many on this forum.

I already have everything I need for our Thanksgiving meal, except for the pumpkin and pecan pies. I'm thinking of just buying frozen ones, and be done with it. I'm just not in the holiday mood.

I found out a bit ago that my oldest (40+ yr old) chest freezer's seal isn't sealing well around the lid in a small spot. The seal is just worn out. Looks like I'll be getting a new freezer, eventually, or just going to only one.

DH has had our outdoor wood burner going for the past week or so but we haven’t needed heat yet so it’s just heating our water for now. We’re still using the a/c although there were a few very cool nights I opened a window, great sleeping weather!

SB-So glad to see your DH is feeling better. We use a bread knife to slice away the outside of a pineapple.

Still sending prayers up for Judy and her DH.

moldy- That’s a lot of chickens to do in a day!

briches- I’ve been working on Christmas for the grands but haven’t made much traction on our adult kids yet.

I hope to get some meat canning done this week and I should have gotten started today but I really needed a day to just rest. The Princess will be here bright and early in the morning and she keeps us on our toes.

Happy Anniversary to SB and Cary!

My everyone is busy!
Did my big shop today in bigger town. Ran errands and so on. Went by myself for the whole day. Just me and the Lord yakking away.

We got the squash put in the pantry. 4 huge U-Haul boxes. Daughter made apple butter and other canning stuff. Just isn't a lot of room left.
The little freezer from the barn is going in the pantry.
I didn't really see any shortages. Just looks like everyone went shopping on the same day.

I don't know where to put turkey and ham for Christmas party. Son said I could use his freezer if it will all fit.
I got him an end table and lamp and other little things, he is very grateful and starting to settle in.

It's been in the 40s during the day and 20-30s at night. Coal stove has been going for a few weeks.
I've been too tired to get out and get cabin stove going. Soon.
Stay safe everyone and still praying for Judy and Ed.

You might be able to get a new seal. Worth looking into anyway. I imagine that Cary (when he feels better), and you and your son and DIL could do it. I say ALL of you because I think somebody is going to have to hold the gasket tight until you can clamp it with C clamps, or something similar. I know Dad and one of the neighbors put a new seal on Mom's refrigerator. She was so disappointed, she thought she was getting a new one.
New ones may be more energy efficient, but they don't get nearly as cold.
When my ancient one quits, it will just have to stay in the house as storage, we put it in the house before they put the double wide together. There is no way to get it out without taking out a wall.

Cary thought about just putting on a new seal. We are thinking about just getting one large freezer, instead of having two medium sized ones. Both freezers are in the laundry room, and we've installed a wood stove, since they were put in place. The stove would have to be taken out in order to move out either freezer. That's going to be a pain. OTOH, I'd like to keep this old freezer for storage, and just have one medium freezer. Either way, I'm not going to do anything, until next spring, once it warms up. The freezer is still working, but I'm sure it's not too energy efficient right now.

We stopped in Neighborhood Market in Russellville Arkansas. Shelves were fairly well stocked. They even had 2 bottles of La Choy sweet and sour stir fry sauce. I have not seen any in over a year. I bought both bottles. Now I just need to make some egg rolls.

We tried the Bear Creek Cheddar and broccoli soup. We liked it a lot. But there is a lot of salt in it. I have some problems with MSG which is in it too. So it will not be something we eat often, but I will keep a couple on hand. The store was out of that flavor but had other varieties.

They only had 2 roll on Biofreeze. They had other varieties of it, just not the roll on. I bought the 2 they had.

We did a little stocking up. Mainly just replacing what we used plus 1 more.

We worked on the fire wood again over the weekend. We filled the wood rack on the porch and cut the ends off some that we bought a couple of years ago that was too long. Hubby cleaned the flue. We will build our first fire today.

I'm getting ready to leave on my grocery run to small town. Would ya'll, please, continue to pray for us? I'm not feeling well, today. My chest feels really tight, and I have a cough. I'm thinking it's just a cold I caught from Cary. He still has some sinus congestion, too.
