I have found that the jar adapter for vac sealing jars seals them poorly. Some people (not me) buy expensive (about $500+) cabinet style vacuum sealers that pull a very hard vacuum and do an excellent job.
I do have a more inexpensive cabinet sealer that seals with enough vacuum that you need a lid lifter to open the jars rather than just using your thumb. I have not tried oven canning but I'm sure it works fine for items not hurt by the heat (like crackers).
Yeah, that sounds like it would work well. I'd probably run them in the oven (lowest setting) or dehydrator for 10-15 minutes or so, just to ensure low moisture, unless you live in the high desert.

I went to buy meat from one of our smaller neighborhood stores as their meat is very reasonable and good. Omygoodness, it was pretty empty! Here food stamps come the 1st, 5th and 10th so it's usually well stocked. Slim pickings for sure. I'm going in a bit to a different store, hopefully they are better stocked. I want 10lbs of hamburger to cook up for the freezer.

One thing I found at Walmart yesterday was three HUGE boxes on the floor of their brand of fleece throws. They were marked down from $3 to $1 each. I have about three or four old suitcases full of them, but picked up a couple more. I have them for barter purposes. I live in Florida and it seems that nobody prepares for cooler weather around here, they just crank up the heat. Light blankets (or use the material to make clothing) would be good barter material. Cheap, but bulky, thus the old suitcases in the garage.

Hey I use those throws for curtains. Hold them on the rod with clothespins lol. Everyone likes the look.

Hospice. Oh my.
I know there are plenty who sing their praises.
But from my experience first as EMT transporting, then with nursing home work and then family members.
Patients are kept so heavily medicated, they won't eat or drink or know where they are. Then the morphine starts. And the dose is continually increased until the patient passes. This happens pretty quickly. Sometimes in a day.
More than once I overheard staff stating that said patient had been started on the morphine protocol and the room would be free soon.
Also on a few occasions, there were patients in sub acute area for hip replacement or some such. They got infection or had a small complication. Doc wanted to start them on the morphine. Family argued and said no. Docs said patient was going to die and let's make them comfortable.
Family said no. Patients actually recovered and did well.
Now that said, there are plenty of times it is truly called for. And it's a relief to be able to ease their pains and let them go peacefully. Happened with my MIL.
Just my two cents. Worth that much.

We got huge manure pile spread on garden. Whew what a job. Hubs used tractor that helped a great deal.
Our anniversary tomorrow. Going out to lunch.

Meemur, what kind of crackers? I've given the last 2 boxes of saltines to the chickens! They just don't keep anymore.

These might keep better because they have more fat. I don't use them for daily snacking: they are on the high end in terms of calories. This company makes other crackers, too.

I canned more pork loin yesterday so another six 24 oz jars for the shelf. DH found Ball regular mouth canning lids yesterday so bought 6 boxes. We don‘t want to clear the shelf when we do find them and so far this is working to keep somewhat ahead for future canning while I’m also canning now. I hope to find more wide mouth soon. I want to get one more canning project done this week especially since the rest of the month is going to be busier than usual.

Sunday I used some ”new to me” instant potatoes I had bought from Sam’s last month, Baby Reds with sour cream and chives. The potatoes were really good and all you need to use is water to prepare them so I looked last night on Sam’s to order some more but they don’t even have them on there, not out of stock, just not there at all. Oh well.

Added a large pack of D batteries for a couple of lanterns and flashlights we may need this winter.

Prayers up for good/better health for us all.

I use those instant potatoes all the time. I like the variety, too. I always find the baby reds with sour cream and chives at our local Walmart. I don't think I've ever seen them at our Sam's. I stocked up on more a few months ago when they were $1/pack. I used a pack last night with brown gravy, meatloaf, cole slaw, and lima beans. The potatoes was one less thing I had to actually cook.

Thanks, but I'm not a fan of the Savoritz brand crackers. I got a couple of bad boxes that were like they pulled them out of the oven too fast, they didn't cook in the middle. Aldi gave me my money back, but I'm hesitant to try them again. I was hoping it was one of those specialty things they only had around the holidays.
I may try oven canning some Ritz if it cools back off.
I put away all my summer clothes last week and it's back in the 80's.
It will probably snow for turkey day.

Another question! What is everyone's plan for adding fat to your diet when it all goes down? Summerthyme has mentioned that geese are the perfect food good protein and high in fat. Any ideas from anyone else? I think I remember someone else mentioning sesame seed. I am all ears!

We're blessed with cows, so butter and cream are going to be the main fat source. But if you have to grow your own and can't keep geese, hulless pumpkin seeds are very high in fat, and so are oilseed sunflowers. Both are very easy to grow.

The cavies have landed.
I was using the massage chair at WM a week or so ago, and met a couple who had cavies, and I was able to buy a mated pair for $20. They are young, so I'm pretty happy with that. Way better than $45 each from a pet store.

Pumpkin seeds are super food is what I've always read. We save them from the pumpkins and roast and salt them. They are good snack
Oh, yeah...I'm snacking on some of our first batch I roasted yesterday! The hulless ones pop like popcorn... best snack ever! I've got 20 more pumpkins to do, but we moved them into the greenhouse so they'll keep while I'm working them up.

Patagonian cavies! So that's what that thing was! I saw one in the woods when I was a kid camping with family at Disney World in Florida. I got looked at funny when I described a short eared rabbit with strange paws and no tail.

Posted on another thread: Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds and sesame seeds all can be grown in a temperate climate. Sunflowers, flax and sesame may be good for guerrilla gardens. Who's going to recognise flax and sesame flowers and think fat/food?

I got the organic flax and sesame seeds in bulk at the health food store. They sprouted.

There are some pints of canned pork cooling on the counter. Who knows if it will do any good in the long run? For right now it makes me feel better know we have it.

DH and I stopped off at Kroger after my Dr. appt. today. I think I’ve only been in there once in the past year since DH does most of our in store shopping, I don’t miss it LOL

They have the Swanson broths on sale right now for .49 cents so we bought 30 cans of beef broth which they were out of when hubby was there last week. We still have several cases of chicken from last years sale (we go through lots of broth). The Red Gold tomato products that were on sale for the same price were no where to be seen but we are decently stocked on most of those anyway. Those Idahoan potatoes SB and I were talking about were also on sale for $1.00 a pack so we bought several different flavors and beef and pork Pioneer gravy mixes. Unfortunately they didn’t have any turkey or chicken gravy mixes. Between sales, digital/store coupons we didn’t do too bad but prices are definitely going up.

We already had a turkey for Thanksgiving in the freezer but we bought another one today. They really didn’t have anywhere near the amount of turkeys they usually have and I only saw a few Butterballs, they are .99 cents a lb. limit of one and with an additional $25.00 purchase and the rest was the Kroger kind (I think Riverside) at .87 cents a lb and also with a $25.00 purchase and limit of one.

I got the other herb book that I ordered in the mail yesterday. I think I have enough to help us some if medication gets scarce.

We went to the cost plus grocery store in the next town. The shelves were looking like early pandemic days. They were low on lots of things; crackers, cookies, canned fruit, noodles, pickles, etc. We got everything on our list I think. I noticed prices were up a little on everything.

We stopped in at the farmers co-op and bought some roundup. The worker told hubby they had 2 pallets, but when that was gone, that was it. He could not get any more. He did mention another herbicide, and said he had not heard that it would be affected. It is a different chemical.

I am thinking I may dig my three Italian pepper plants up and pot them into buckets to bring in the house. They were hard to find this year. Also they are loaded with tiny peppers. Hopefully I can keep them alive.

You see very few mask being worn anymore in our area. Only a few businesses have signs asking you to wear one.

took down a big white oak for a neighbor first of the week . . . lots of stove wood there. I like try to keep 12-14 cords stacked, covered and seasoning around the place at all times. I'd been a bit light this year since I was injured in February and had to undergo cervical spine fusion . . . then some foot surgery in June. this will help get me back on track.

I drank Swanson chicken broth while really sick and trying to get some nutrition. I need to replace those cans.

I have been very sick for about 6 weeks ...Neg for covid but rather some type of bacterial infection....doctor put me on Z pack and then a bit over week or so later a much stronger antibiotic ...if I was not improving he wanted to do chest x-rays blood work...but the second antibiotic finally kicked it's butt.....getting my strength back is time consuming

May have appeared from the grocery store. .veggies or meat. I have been cooking for the 60 to 70 years. .so know all the safe handling suff. So be super careful. .....

I had a bunch of cream of chicken soup for cooking ....DH was fixing that for me...he figured in had a little more in it than just broth....
We are replacing it also....but for your information it worked well in place of broth.

Finally, Cary has fully recovered from this round of illness. He got a call from his primary care MD, yesterday, to check on him. His BP is still not too high, so MD wants him to continue to stay off his BP meds, unless something changes. It would be wonderful if he no longer needs them. He has another follow up check in two weeks.

Still no prepping being done. It's a nasty, rainy day, so we're just sitting by the fire doing mostly nothing. Reading around on the forum, mostly.

Given everything that has happened with Cary, since January, I'm a bit anxious about this happening again. It's like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I can't seem to shake the feeling. A bit of depression is beginning to set in, too. Everything happening in the world isn't helping, either.

I'll have to remember about the cream of chicken soup, I have some. But at the time about all we could manage was to open a can of the broth and pour it in a cup.

And yes, it does take time to recover completely.

How do you “oven can” crackers?
Thanks
I sanitize 2 quart canning jars (but you can use any size you like) in the dishwasher. I spread oyster crackers on a cookie sheet and out them in the oven at 250 degrees for 10 minutes (to crisp them up and drive any moisture out). Then I scoop them into the jars, apply lids and rings, and put them back in the oven for 20 minutes.

They seal as they cool.

I use this technique with nuts, as well, and they keep for years ...

Bacon, bacon, bacon! The hogs outnumber the people in Iowa, and there are enough CSAs around me that I'm not worried about fat. Actually I'm not worried about food at all, just spare parts, like for cars and bikes and home repairs.

Yeah, it's bacon for us, too. I save every drop of bacon grease. It stays in my fridge, except the grease can I keep on the counter, but I will can it if I have to.

Meemur I did a 12 week stint while in nursing school at a Mental Health Institute near Waterloo. You are right more hogs than people. Kept asking what the horrible smell was... I was there during Spring, turns out it was hog poo that they were spraying the fields with! Now that IS using everything but the pig's oink! Cant for the life of me remember the name of that little town.

We had a hog farm less than a mile down the road from us that did the same thing. The smell was awful while the fields were being sprayed.

Chicken poop sprayed on fields is a smelly mess. There are chicken houses around here. Although no one near me farms that much anymore, hardly even grow a tomato plant.

They are running out of RoundUp?

Yippie!

Great day of Joy when that happens!

Maybe GMO seeds might be the next thing to become scarce. Wouldn’t that be great. Let the Heirloom Seeds rise again!

I continue to work slow and steady here …. replaced some items we had used up while it’s cheap to do so (deodorant, toothpaste) etc. I’m still of the ”use one / buy two (or 3) mindset.
I keep a running shopping list on my phone of what is needed when I stop into the dollar tree or dollar general. Some items (stevia/mouthwash/jar mushroom) they haven’t had for weeks. I’ll keep looking and waiting.

Our food lion does have turkeys for 33 cents a pound (if you spend $35) - limit of two. We don’t have room in the freezer so will be making some adjustments to accommodate that. We still have a fee turkeys in the freezers so will be covered for the holidays but I’d love to replenish those. I’ll also be keeping my eye for spiral ham to go on sale. I’d love to pick up 2-3 of those to have. Lunch meat prices are soaring. These items could greatly help with that.
