Praying that everyone has a great week ahead! Judy, I hope to see you and your DH making great improvements!

We're gonna have another lazy week. I don't have any prepping planned. I'm trying to find a place where I can hang the shoe rack that Philkar suggested in another thread. I think that's a great idea for storing packets of gravy mixes and instant potatoes and pasta. I may have to rearrange a bit to find a good place. I'm getting the rack next trip into town.

Warmer temps are in store for us this week. Highs in the low 70's with lows in the 40's. No need for firewood, just gonna use the propane wall heater at night. That gives me a break. I'm so glad that all of our yard work has already been done for the season. No more yard mowing, weed eating, or leaf blowing!

Today, our Sunday home fellowship is cancelled, due to Cary not feeling up to it. Everyone understands. He's doing much better, but doesn't feel up for company. His BP if finally showing improvement, too. His BP being back up to somewhat normal is making him feel better, and stronger. About the only thing I'm letting him do is mess around and read here on the forum, though, besides taking a short walk outside each day. He's beginning to get "bossy", so I know he's feeling lots better, LOL!

You guys have been in my prayers!

Other than doing a lot of organization, I'm not planning on a big week either. We are supposed to warm up a bit, so I want to be outside enjoying the fresh air as much as possible.

Thank you for the prayers!

Yeah, our weather is going to be beautiful for the next few days. Good outdoor sunshine and warmer temps makes for a nice afternoon walk.

SB- I’m glad to hear Cary is doing/feeling some better.

Prayers up for all who have been feeling under the weather.

I canned six of the 24 oz jars of pork loin chunks yesterday and plan to do some more this week. I sure wish I could hold up to do things as I once could, because I have a lot that needs to be done but not enough energy! I have pork, chicken and beef waiting in the freezer to be canned, I’ll feel better to have more meats on the shelf.

I had a tag in my nightshirt that was irritating me and it took me a really long time to put my hands on a seam ripper, even though I know I have at least two. I had tried with scissors but just couldn’t get all the stitches out. I decided to just go ahead and order a few more to have on hand along with more hand needles in different types/sizes and a new supply of safety pins in various sizes.

sb, still praying for ya'll. I'm looking to make some strides this week, I'm actually sitting at my computer and not totally exhausted yet. I am feeling better, just get so tired. DH is up and out and doing things and can't seem to understand that I'm not feeling that energetic. What ever. I'm still leary about falling, I had a couple of falls before I got sick, so I'm being careful. I'd like to going outside but its cold.

No prepping for the time being. I need to access what working while we were sick and what didn't.

God is good all the time

Judy delighted to see you back among us!

Oldest grandson spent night and is here for the day. Gifting oldest daughter some produce when she gets here.
Resting in cabin then back inside. Really want to get my sew machine working. Besides regular stuff that's probably it for now. The pantry is completely stuffed.
I'm pooped but sons bedroom is done. I'll see if I can post a pic.

I'm so happy to hear that ya'll are doing so much better. Just don't push yourself. Your body will heal in it's own time. I know how exhausting just getting to the computer can be. Cary has been going through that, too. He gets to the computer, reads or posts a bit, then he has to go lay back for awhile. He's been watching old reruns on tv.

Reassessing what works and what doesn't from time to time is a great idea for everyone.

I sure wish we both had those! I could take mine around with me in my purse/bag. I'd never get caught at the hospital again without a way to contact all you guys and gals!
Watch Amazon for deals on Kindle tablets. I'll admit, they drive me nuts because they're slower than I like, but they are very functional and darned inexpensive. Even 8f you just had one to share, for the travel or sick times...

One to share. That's a good idea. I'm hoping to have that added to my Christmas wish list......I've been hinting at one for 2 years now.

Amazom has their kindle fire on sale for $45. Great price. I got one for hubby for Christmas. I think he will enjoy it. He hates apple products.

I use my iPad to access the forum. I rarely use a computer unless I’m at work.

Some errand running today. Picked up more pasta, spaghetti sauce, distilled water, and minor other things. Have managed to get 2 dozen pint jars from Walmart this week. The old dehydrator I dug out of storage does work, but I only have one rack left and it runs hot. It is working right now to dehydrate bags of frozen corn. First one done, second one just in. Might have to ask for a new one for Christmas :)

Briches, thank you so much for getting the thread started this morning - I appreciate it! I ran my errands, came home, fed cats and fell into bed. That darned extra time change hour at work did me in

Judy, I can't tell you how glad I am to see you back and posting :apc:

Prudent Watcher, check the thrift stores first!! What brand of dehydrator is it? I have an ancient round Golden Harvest dehydrator that I've bought additional trays for - they trays are not Golden Harvest brand, but they fit. There are two original trays left, but I picked up others here and there - I've got two bright white ones and a half dozen clear ones that all fit the dehydrator base. An aside - have you ever dehydrated applesauce to make homemade fruit roll ups? I don't add sugar to the applesauce; I leave it plain or use a teeny bit of Kool-Aid powder to change the flavor (Strawberry and Cherry are yummy!), Then spread on my plastic sheets and dry in the dehydrator. You can also mix applesauce with Jello powder and drop it in blobs on the sheets to make 'fruit snacks' or gummy type candy. My grandsons loved them!

I finished the week out by stopping on my way to work on Friday to pick up de-icer type windshield washer fluid and de-icer spray; then stopping on my way to work on Saturday at two different Dollar Generals to use my two $5 off $25 coupons. I picked up 2 jugs of their brand of light weight cat litter and a package of Charmin tp at each one. I had coupons for the Charmin. The DG cat litter works as well as any and is less expensive. I'm going to put one jug in my van to use in slippery winter weather. I need to remember to pull out the plastic floor mats for the van, too. And find my boots. And, and, and... :xpnd: I am so not ready for winter to be here again!!

My prep purchase to get this week started out on the right foot was trash bags - there is a certain kind I like, and they are only carried at one local store. I picked up 5 boxes, and also grabbed 5 boxes of the small bags that I use when for cat litter, so I am set for several months. Tomorrow's prep will be exercising at the pool

Re: Amazon Kindles - pay the extra and get the ad free version - it's worth it!! There is a black Friday ad on amazon right now - $44 for an 8" Kindle is a decent buy. They don't tolerate much abuse and the charging ports are not tough enough to withstand kids plugging and unplugging them, but when used by an adult for light surfing and reading, they are okay.

Take care all - have a great week!

I'm saying prayers for everyone.

All of the sick people reminded me that I should add a few more items to the "quick eats" portion of my pantry, plus I keep several of these items handy on the shelf near the microwave: instant oatmeal, peanut butter, instant potatoes, instant tea, cup of soup packets, fruit cups, and crackers, which are an odd German type from Aldi, but they've been keeping better than regular soda crackers.

I also do my best to keep extra eggs on hand, some hard boiled.

Under normal circumstances, I greatly dislike instant oatmeal and potatoes! But when I'm under the weather or I'm too tired to stand in front of the stove, these items can be on the table quickly, and sometimes just getting something warm into my tummy makes a world of difference, even the cup of soup and a few crackers with peanut butter on them greatly helps.

Today, my focus was on getting ready for the week, as well as trying to get all of the summer clothing washed, repaired (where necessary), and put into clear storage bins, which will be stacked in the main bedroom closet. This is a new system for me. I'll see how it works. I'm trying to only store about 8 days of clothing in the tiny closet next to my "dressing area" (large chair). If I can make this system work, it will make planning my wardrobe for the week much easier. I can also rotate out the lighter fall pieces and bring in the heavier ones.

Yes, I'm missing working at home. I could toss a nice blouse over a pair or jeans or sweats and call that good! It was easy enough to collect 10 days worth of nice shirts and hang them in the small closet, along with several pairs of jeans, sweats, and hoodies. Done! Oh, well . . .

Wishing everyone a great week with ever-improving health!

While physically recovering for weeks after hospitalization, I too realized that those quick meals were so important. I usually have several meals partially prepared and in freezer. But I saw the need to make those available from my food storage. I am putting easy recipes in a notebook for hubby and making the recipes so I can make sure they are acceptable to everyone!

That IS the problem with the self-sufficient lifestyle- if we get sick or hurt, keeping up is difficult or impossible. When I developed the MRSA bone infection, even when not I the hospital, I was still too weak and in pain to do much. My 13 year old daughter took over the kitchen and laundry for a year. Her younger brother, who was 9, became the pastry and dessert chef! (He was so proud of himself when his older brothers would come home from highschool (ds was being homeschooled) and tell him there was no way he could have made the cinnamon rolls or cupcakes! I coached him over the phone from my hospital bed...

But this is a big part of the reason I always keep jars of home canned stew.. beef, pork, chicken. It's simple enough to cook some rice or noodles, but if you're even too weak for that, you can nuke it in the jar and pour it over a piece of bread.

Canned juices, Gatorade, herbal tea bags... all need to be part of the health preps.

Other than the floor the greenhouse is done. I can't decide what I want to put down. Can't wait to get my plants in before the freeze.
I ordered 3 pair of pants for me the price was great and I needed them. I've been pareing down our clothes, my husband alone could cloth a small army. Lol
All the throws and afghans are clean now, I brought the ones at the farm in so we have extra. We closed on Friday and handed the keys off to the young homesteading family we sold to. They raise quail for eggs and meat, she makes sourdough bread and raises houseplants to sell at the farmer's market. We now own our car and on Monday we will own the house!!!:chg:
Prayers for all of you! Here's to a great week!

We were gifted 3 chickens that had stopped laying. They are now 12 quart jars of chicken noodle soup with garlic and green chile for cold season. Also did 12 quarts of turkey vegetable soup, along with smoking another turkey and a chicken. Turkey is 98 cents a pound so it’s the cheapest protein going. Scored 2 cases of wide mouth quarts and 6 boxes of lids and bands at Goodwill today.

Meemur, what kind of crackers? I've given the last 2 boxes of saltines to the chickens! They just don't keep anymore.

Still working on organizing my books, but I ran out of shelves, so I had to move some things around.
My bed sits on a platform of drawers. Half of them are not easily accessible, they're too close to the wall. I probably hadn't looked in them in years. Well, I found enough sweat shirts to last me the rest of my life --- including a favorite one that I thought I'd lost. A brand new hoodie and heavy thick sweat shirt, and the insulated underwear I looked for last year and couldn't find.
Also found some horrid clothes that Mom insisted I keep, I don't know why in the world I didn't put them straight in the dumpster when I left her house. They are headed that way now. the GoodWill never re-opened here after Covid, and there's no where to donate them. This is crocheted items that I can't even use as rags...
I like to get to the dump early before all the rifraf gets out, but it was just too cold this morning. I will pack up and head out in a little while.
Hope everybody continues to feel better!

Good morning, All!

I got up doing laundry this morning. I have one load in the washer, and another ready to go.

Cary is much better this morning. His BP is holding within normal range, but he hasn't started back taking his BP meds, yet. Unless his BP goes up above where his MD wants it, he's been told not to start taking it. The weather is going to be so nice, today, I think he'll be ok to go outside and do a bit as long as he doesn't overdo it. He's about to go stir crazy being in the house so much. He's an outdoors man.

I keep several different types of ready to eat meals here in my pantry. Canned soups, mostly. I've learned from this latest experience that the one thing I could get Cary to eat was canned fruit. Even while in the hospital, he would always eat the fruit that was brought on his meal trays, diced pears, peaches, pineapples, etc. when he didn't eat anything else. I don't have a lot of canned fruit in my pantry, so I'll be buying more to have on hand. I bought several cans of pineapple the other day.

I am so relieved to see our sick members are on the mend. Take it slow and continue healing.

Last week was busy. We bought a truck load of rough cut pine. It is level with the bed of the truck. Some of the boards are over 10 feet long. We got a good deal because the mill was moving to a new location and didn't want to move it. We also got more work done on the barn wood rack. Hopefully we can start moving the wood at hubby's parents house soon. We still have to unload the rough cut lumber too. We just parked it in the barn and have been driving the other truck.

We got the dirt work at hubby's parents house done this weekend. The other kids had been over and going through stuff. They left us some canned goods on the counter. I am sharing them with our kids. I pulled a couple of things out of the trash that hubby's siblings had thrown away. A bedspread, we are going to need moving blankets when we get to the furniture, and some clear plastic I can use on a Cole frame.

Hubby is thinking of getting another back injection. He is in a lot of pain lately. He is doing too much. But just sitting is not good either.

We found out some disturbing information about my father in laws stay at the nursing home. He went under the recommendation of hospice. He quit eating and drinking, which they didn't tell us for days. My sister in law asked that they check him for a UTI, they told her they would, which they never did. Then the nursing home administrator told my sister in law last week that they don't treat UTI in hospice patients. He also informed her that the dr stopped his blood pressure and heart medication when he stopped drinking. They had him so doped up he could barely sit in his wheelchair. I doubt he could hold his cup. He died of a heart attack a week after they stopped his medication. He had dementia but went into the nursing home walking on a walker and feeding himself. He just would not give his dying wife any peace. He did not understand she was sick and dying. None of us had a house that he could get in and we were trying to take care of mother in law. But we never dreamed that the nursing home experience would be so bad. He passed first and she passed 8 days later. Hubby's sister said if she gets to that point as her dad was, just smother her with a pillow instead of sending her to a nursing home. I think we all feel the same. Hospice only works with 2 nursing homes in the area. The first had no opening for weeks. Now we know why this one had more openings. We feel like the home was took pay to kill him. They had a new patient coming that day for his room. So they never lost a penny on his room. I better stop here.

We bought 500 pounds of 13-13-13 fertilizer for next year. I intend to get our fruit tree spray this week. The fertilizer had been $11 and change at the beginning of the year. Last week was 17.89 a bag. But we are good at least a year. I am not sure if we will be able to fertilize the hay next year if prices increase too much.

Whether it's nursing home hospice or in home hospice, it's all the same. My dad was placed on in home hospice care. All his medications were stopped, and they wouldn't treat him for anything. All they did was kept him doped up on Morphine more and more, until his heart finally stopped. It was a terrible experience for all the family. It was as if they were just wanting/waiting for him to die, so they could move on.

They did treat my mother in law for a UTI in home hospice. And she was given anti nausea pills so she could eat. She had cancer and was alert and eating till the last week. She just could not eat much because the tumors took up so much room. She took her blood pressure pills till the last week also. But that was the only maintenance prescription she had. She might have lived to 100 if not for the cancer. She was 89 when she passed. Overall we were happy with home hospice. But the nursing home was a disaster.

Just popping in quickly. So glad everyone is improving! Summer, is dry canning crackers better than vacuum sealing them in jars?
In my experience, the seals hold longer with the oven canning. I gave up vacuum sealing jars, as I had too many failures in storage. However, if you have it figured out, it should be equivalent. The only thing I think might be a factor is if you first heat them on a pan before putting in the jars (for oven canning), you know they are completely dry... in humid areas, you can actually have dry goods absorb too much moisture from the air for long shelf life.

I have found that the jar adapter for vac sealing jars seals them poorly. Some people (not me) buy expensive (about $500+) cabinet style vacuum sealers that pull a very hard vacuum and do an excellent job.
I do have a more inexpensive cabinet sealer that seals with enough vacuum that you need a lid lifter to open the jars rather than just using your thumb. I have not tried oven canning but I'm sure it works fine for items not hurt by the heat (like crackers).
