Good Morning, All! And a very Happy Mother's Day!

It's another rainy day here, but the only thing on the list for today was to go to Daughter's house and have lunch with her and my grandsons - which will likely lead to taking a nap later this afternoon :) Some silly person stayed up waaaaay too late last night re-reading books 1-3 of the Walking in the Rain series by William Allen (apocalyptic/prepper fiction) - made it through the first several chapters in book 4, but will have to start at the beginning of 4 again since I'm pretty sure I was sleep-reading through part of it. I bought the 7 book series (one was written by MC Allen) a while back, but the series is currently available to read through Kindle Unlimited if anyone needs something to occupy them through some rainy days.

Plans for this week include going back to work from my vacation - Bleah! (And once I get there, checking the vacation calendar to see if anyone has snagged the vacation days of the RN who just quit  ) I do have some required online learning to complete before the end of the month - 3 new ones were added to my list since my vacation started, some of which I hope to get done here at home later today and tomorrow. Yeah, I don't get paid for doing them at home, but on the other hand, my co-workers will be pleased that they don't have to listen to me yelling at the people in the Active Shooter video again; and I have been assured that we don't have to play video games for BLS/ACLS any more, so I won't have to find a 10 year old to help me

Looks like the rain has stopped, at least for right now - I heard it hitting the windows hard about an hour ago. The low temp for today/tomorrow is supposed to be 37*F overnight tonight, but I don't trust it, so will be pulling plants up closer to the house and covering the tender ones. We've got 5 days of clear weather forecast starting tomorrow; 3 of which I have to work, so I will have to be sleeping at least one of them, and napping on the other two. It's going to take at least 2 or maybe 3 of those days for the ground to dry up enough to be able to till it. I'm hoping to be able to go over to the sale barn on Thursday or Friday for another load of composted manure to till in to at least the front garden.

The lemon balm I cut last week has come back with a vengeance - I need to dig it up and move it to somewhere I won't care if it goes crazy - maybe around the stock tank where I catch rainwater. I did find some yellow pole bean seed in my seed box; they were from 2019; I set some to soak in some rain water and they did (finally!) all sprout, so I'll be putting enough more of them to sprout in water in hopes of planting a 20' row of them this coming week, along with the green pole beans. We like to mix the green and yellow wax beans when we can them. I'm contemplating seeing if I can find some pole lima bean seed as well; we don't eat a lot of them, but do add some frozen ones in to veggie soup.

Well, I have grandsons video messaging me, so I guess I'd better finish this up and call them back to thank them for the Mother's Day wishes. You folks all take care out there; stay safe, stay sane!!

We had another adventuresome night last night. A series/line of severe thunderstorms rolled over us again. We were bracing for them, and by the time one of those storms got to our community, it had turned into a rotating storm on the radar. That qualifies as a tornado that hasn't touched down, yet. We got the warning, and we headed for our safe room, and hunkered down. No damage on our place, but that wind and the roar of the funnel cloud was horrendous! I don't want a repeat of that anytime soon! I thought, for sure, that we were going to lose some of our trees, and maybe our roof! God was good!

We had rain and thunder last night but it didn't seem all that bad. Supposed to rain off and on for the next two days, the the percentage of a chance is not all that high, so I'm doubting we get much.

Still hoping one of the shelving units arrives today, its been shipped but not tracking information, so only God knows when it will get here. I've got a space for it but I keep having to make myself not stack something in that space. I'm really in limbo with moving forward in my pantry room. I guess I should have gotten a couple of shlving units at Lowes when we were there a week or so back. They were more expensive but I could have mad a lot of headway in there since then.

I don't have room for any more shelves, but what I'm needing more of are the buckets and lids I get from TSC. I have several packages of Ramen Noodles to store in those, before bugs find them! They are in cases too large to store in my freezers for the time being. Last time we were in TSC, their supply of those buckets were in short supply. I will not order anything from Amazon. I'll just have to wait on TSC. I haven't tried Walmart, yet.

Sherree, sometimes if you ask at the bakery in the grocery store, they will give, or sell you some. They don't always have lids, but I just take whatever they'll let me have.

I know you can do that at Walmart, but I don't shop "in store" there anymore. My little grocery store doesn't have a bakery. Hopefully, when we go back to TSC in another week, they will have more in stock. If not, I'll see if I can borrow some room in Mom's big freezer. I'll even offer to share some cases of the Ramen Noodles with her. I should not have bought so many cases at Sam's right here at the end of cold weather, but I did. Cary only eats the things for his lunch when the weather is cold. Now, I have to "over summer" them.

You may be waiting a long time getting them from one source. I do think walmart has the 5 gallon buckets in different colors in stock. Last year I was able to order 5, 3/12 and 2 gallon buckets from walmart, they came 10 to a box. So I'm well stocked in that respect. The buckets I got are generally no longer in stock. The brand is Argee.

I suggest you get what you need where ever you can, they may be impossible to find in the not too distant future. The prices are much much higher than they were last year.

I'd check home depot and lowes, and walmart in the store. The prices on amazon are way expensive.

Here is a link to home depot that has the Agree 10 pack in stock, my favorite size is 3 1/2 gallon but the do have the 5 gallon size. To me this is the best price if you want to order in bulk. I like the argee lids too. If you buy in bulk you have your future needs covered. the 5 gallon lids also fit the 3 1/2 gallon bucket.

We were up in Colorado visiting our kids over the weekend, just got back.
Brought back two -55 gallon metal barrels. Going to use one to store gas for our big generator.
Also got a bunch of coal for my coal forge. Had a good time with the kids.

Almost done rebuilding the grape arbor. Termites did a number on the treated posts, so went back with steel posts. Added a roof to it this time, made of a kennel cover framework and a couple cattle panels. Should allow for a lot more growing room and still be able to access the bunches when they are ready.
Made sure all the fuel containers are topped off, especially with the refinery cutting back crude processing.

The 'new' job I am looking at will be posted this week, but I was also offered a part time gig at my same facility. I guess the more jobs I can do, the harder it is to fire me!! This week will be really busy - the only day I truly have off is Friday, then I work the weekend. It's been raining here quite a bit, so I can't get out in the garden or yard anyway. Might as well work!

Wife has been busy refilling the freezer...the (not so) old one died, and we didn't catch it for several days. Not good is an understatement. Everything was thawed :(
Ended up making a road trip up to Meridian to get a new one since noone had any around here. Decent price and nearly twice as large...with a temperature alarm!
She also found a local farmer that grows and delivers produce and meat...all home grown, so less cash goes to the conglomerates. Tastes better, too. Plus they grow several different varieties than we do.

My shelving unit saga continues. The first one was cancelled. The second one was supposed to be delivered today, it was supposedly packaged but never shipped out, it was cancelled out of stock. Last week I ordered another one, it was supposed to be delivered on May 18, now its supposed to be delivered Friday May 14, I'll believe it when I see it. With the one cancelled today I ordered another one, its seems this one is back in stock, its supposed to be delivered on May 21, I asked for an express delivery, we'll see. The have given me discounts on the two that are still in the pipeline. We'll see, I'll believe it when I see it. This shelving unit is much more expensive elsewhere, if they even have it.

I'm trying to move all the canned food on the shelves in DH's office out of there. DH has agreed to let me use those shelves for books. I want to put all of my cook books, homesteading books, gardening books, herb books, etc out there. This is the first room coming into the house and I do not want it to be filled with food for anyone to see. Much better to have books out there. This is a big thing on Dh's part, he is not a book person. My mother told me that books are my friends and I have taken her seriously.

Had my eye exam today. Glasses are now in the pipeline. Hope they get here.
Cleaning at the dentist tomorrow.
If the senior health fair is held on Friday, I'll go get my blood pressure checked and some other free to inexpensive tests. That's what passes for my yearly physical, but for $10 - $15, at least I can get some test results and if anything looks scary, I can follow up at a clinic.

That will get me current on medical stuff.

I wish I could have done this sooner, but I was working. I'm totally off this week from both jobs. It's nice not being tied
to the internet so much.

The rain here just won't stop. I have more tomato plants to set out. If the rain keeps going like it has been for over a week now, I'm going to have to take the shovel out to the raised bed, dig a hole in the mud, and set them out. They are outgrowing their pots. More rain and thunder woke us up this morning.

We lost all of our peaches and apples this year due to a late frost/freeze. Our muscadines and figs are really coming on, though. Looks like another good year for our mulberries and blackberries, too. It's still a bit early to see if our pecan tree will have nuts this year. No tassels as of yet.

Cary has a check up appointment with his Internist, tomorrow afternoon. He's doing great, so we don't foresee any problems. Mom also has a doctor's appointment at the same time with her doctor. We're taking her with us for her appointment. Hers is just for a check up, too.

We've got everything that will hold gasoline filled to the brim. Both vehicles and every gas can we have. I haven't heard of any shortages in our area, but the price for gas is definitely increasing. While in town, tomorrow, I'll be watching to see if there are any long lines at the pumps and the prices.

Yes, a gas shortage is going to put a damper on a lot of spring activities. That's also why I moved here. I'm not far from the bike trails, lakes, and rivers. I can enjoy nature without having to drive an hour or two away.

Yes it is. Cary and I were planning to take a trip down to Natchez, MS on the Natchez Trace Parkway, before the weather turned off so hot. Doesn't look like that is going to happen anyway soon. The gas shortages and the price will keep us at home for the time being. We don't drive much on a regular basis, but a day trip would be nice. I love the old city of Natchez, and it's been awhile, since we've been.

Yesterday, I got the last of my winter clothes washed and put away (I hope!) Re-arranged and moved some things in the pantry.
Today is my regular day to buy animal feed, so I decided I'd combine some errands. I usually just go and get feed and that's it. The feed mill is between where I live and town, there's nothing else there. I don't let my car get below half a tank of gas since I live so far from a station, and I forgot to fill up last week. It's going to take a while before I remember I don't have to go to work every day. My regular station was out, so I dropped my aluminum cans at the FD, dropped off the library books I had finished at the library, and headed to the next station. They had lines everywhere, but at least they had some gas. I had to wait 15 minutes to fill up, but I had stuff to read and a bottle of water. The women were being absolutely rude and horrible and blocking everybody in with their cars. The men were just kind of shrugging it off. One woman blocked the entire parking lot with her car, and no one could get in or not. The woman who owns the station came out and point blank told her to MOVE. Then she told a woman in a big Suburban to move and she told her that she would drive where she wanted to...
I thought about coming home and getting the truck to fill it up, but it has no turn radius and it literally takes half an acre to turn the thing around. People usually get out of my way but the way everybody was acting I decided not to risk it. And the gas was pumping so slow I figured that they would be out before I got back anyway.
At least the car is full and that should last me thru next week. I have to get hay in the morning and the truck has enough gas for that.
I finally remembered to stop at the hardware store and pick up some more nails and fence staples, and that cost me $25, but it should be enough to last until fall (I hope)

I still need to swap out seasonal clothing but the high here tomorrow is 53. It's May already. At some point we also need to think about a garden......sigh. I hate setting stuff out though the way the temps have been swinging. We've been busy though do some home repairs and general cleaning outside as weather allows. Next up is a new roof hopefully this week. They were supposed to start tomorrow but more rain is in the forecast.

I have a large closet (10x12) so I just move things around, no packing away. Although I probably do need to pack away sizes that neither of are wearing right now. DH lost weight, on purpose, and I gained what he lost, and that was not on purpose.

We've also had a lot of rain, the power was out for a couple of hours. DH has our system set up that its pretty quick to start the generator. Even if the power is out for a couple of hours he still turns the generator on.

The goats broke into the chicken yard yesterday, or rather our big billy did, so Dh just left it open and closed off the feed room. When Dh went out this morning about 5:00 am Buddy the goat and Lucky the dog were in the chicken house. Buddy was just standing there, he is allergic to getting wet and Lucky was laying down. I guess the hang out together more than we realize. Lucky does go out in the rain, hopefully the chicken poop will wash off, yuck.

The rain has about stopped for now and DH is out working. Its looks like we won't be getting our hired man any more because he will not stay off his phone and that causes him to make mistakes, plus it dangerous. DH is plugging along on the build of his cabin, all by himself. All I have to do is walk out the door and I get bitten by bugs, so I don't go out for very long.

My winter clothes are still out because it's been in the 40s at night. Maybe next week I can air out the winter blankets and start putting them away for the summer.

I need to come up with a better system, one where I have both some winter and summer clothing always at hand, so if there is a sudden hot or cold snap, I don't have to go digging in the main closet.

I need to do that, too (a better system). With the weird weather we're having, I don't know what to wear from day to day. It's in the 80's (which is normal for this time of year) for a few days, then it goes back down into the low 60's for a few days. Back and forth. I've already got all my winter clothes put away, and find myself having to go dig them back out. It's only in the 60's for our high, today and tomorrow. Should be well into the upper 80's by now.

In Louisiana we never know what the weather is going to be, hence not packing any season clothes away completely.

There is a lot more rain coming our way later today, the sun almost came out for a little while earlier.

We have several too many roosters. 5 of them are out of the cicken yard and I can see them out my office window. The are absolutely beautiful, Dh puts them out of the chicken yard because they torment the hens. I think there are three in the chicken yard. And there went 3 baby goats running along where the roosters are. We are so blessed.

My shelving unit that is supposed to be here by friday is on the move, it finally got out of california and is now in arazonia.

DH threatened to just kill the 5 roosters that he has shut out of the chicken yard because a 50 pound bag of corn is now $10. I gave him $10 to buy a bag for them. These are big beautiful birds, a couple of them are multi colored and they are just to pretty to throw away. One is black and one is red. The last one is kind of scrawny and redish. Its fun to watch the goats, wonder dog and the roosters out there together not bothering each other. Life on a farm.

I live in a farming community and few people have chickens and definitely don't want the roosters to butcher.

There has been too much bad news lately and like always when I get a little spooked I order more supplies. So I now have a couple hundred dollars worth of food and other supplies coming from Walmart. Plus I think later this week I will go into the hardware store and get some other things I have been thinking about just to have on hand.

I know the feeling. I wish I had a couple of extra hundreds to spend! Oldest DS gave me a nice gift card for Mother's Day from one of my favorite specialty shops. I'm going to take it, and spend it on things for the house.

Same here, Judy. Farming community for growing crops and cattle. No one has chickens. The ones who have had chickens in the past, got rid of them, because they didn't want to butcher them. All they wanted were the eggs not the meat.
DH does not butcher, at least he hasn't in a long time. He tosses dead chickens across the highway and down the pipeline. I did tell him if he butchered one of the roosters that I'd cook it in the crockpot. We are not big chicken eaters though.

Hiwall: in the past I'd be ordering more too, but I simply have no more room for anything. And I probably have at least 200 cans of vegetables out in the she shed, in addition to the hundreds I have in the house, all over the house.. I check on them and so far they are all fine. I've got stacks of canned foods out in my van from awhile back, no where to put them. I'm no longer stashing food in the living room and I'm determined to keep the sofa area cleaned off.

No more rain, thank goodness, the last of it passed us by, but Sheree you may be getting it now.

So thankful! Glasses on order, dental cleaning done, got in at the "free" clinic (nothing is free) and got blood pressure checked, sugar checked, hearing checked (not a full test), and an arm mole looked at -- probably not cancer -- but make an appointment at the regular clinic if it gets bigger and/or changes color. I'm going to try eggplant and vinegar on it.

So glad that's behind me! I hate doing that stuff, but staying on topic of potential medical issues is a prep, too.

I don't want to be locked down, again, but if we are, I won't worry about medical issues for awhile.
