Picked up the last of the boys' school supplies yesterday; granddaughter came along for the ride as for once she didn't have some sort of practice or workout, so she was able to get her school supplies as well. Hit Aldi for weekly type groceries, and stocked up on a few pantry items at both WM & Aldi since I was there. I was finally able to get in for a much needed haircut and the young lady hit the perfect length - not long enough to be annoying, not too short to pull back or put up; gotta remember to ask for her the next time I go in! I did managed to run one canner load of tomatoes in quart jars - dipped in boiling water, peeled, cut in quarters or halves depending on size of 'mater, dumped in jars and squished down until solidly packed to 1/2" from the top, added a little salt, then BWB for 30 minutes.
We have been inundated with fresh broccoli, so after I picked another canner's worth of tomatoes, I picked today's harvest of broccoli, blanched it, then chopped it before putting it in the dehydrator - which I plugged in to the side porch outlet
I prepped and put another 7 quarts of tomatoes in the canner, then brought in a couple of 2 gallon buckets/lids from the shed and cleaned them up; while they are air drying, I'm going to vac seal some of the beans, rice, and pasta I picked up yesterday in heavy gallon vac seal bags and put them in those buckets to use for short term storage or handouts in case of an emergency. Teaching the grandsons water conservation this morning - they shared bath water last night, then I let it cool in the tub until this morning before siphoning it out into buckets and letting them use it to water the non-edible plants in the flower beds. I explained why we weren't using it on the food plants in the garden - older grandson broke it down for younger one by telling him: "It has butt germs in it, Dude; you get sick if you eat butt germs." I love kids
My pole beans have finally started vining so I may end up with a crop this fall; pretty sure the heat was keeping them down. I halved some of our yellow cherry tomatoes, sliced one of the cukes I picked up yesterday, chunked up an onion and part of a green pepper, then sliced a string cheese stick in rounds and layered it all in a 24 oz freezer jar, dumped some Italian dressing on top, and put on a tight lid; I'll shake it up now and again; maybe turn it on it's top, and let it marinate, then serve it up for supper along with fried fish from a nearby town's festival that benefits their Volunteer Fire Department/Ambulance Service; thinking about getting an order of those cool 'tater chips too - where they spiral cut a large spud and deep fry it.... Of course, it's right before I'm supposed to get my annual labs done for the wellness program at work
May as well up the HgbA1c with some lemon shake-ups and ice cream that's been churned by an old hit 'n miss engine while I'm at it
Still need to get the boys haircuts as that went by the wayside yesterday, but may have to hold off on that until next week (unless I can con Hubby into using his clippers on them) as various activities keep popping up - like laundry
Not sure how two boys who seem to spend half their time running around in their underpants managed to generate so much laundry - other than the towels I keep mopping up various spills with!
Well, the neighbor girl just got dropped off by her grandmother so I reckon that's my cue to get some work done.
Take care all; have a blessed weekend!
