I keep a 3-ring binder with all my emergency notes, checklists and inventories. This week I'll be working to revise my Emergency Binder. It's amazing how much changes from year to year and I want to keep it up to date. The perfect project in looking at the weather ahead.

The emergency binder is what keeps me organized and confident that everything is taken care of. I can feel that I don't have to do it all in on day, I can spread it out over the year. This is where my weekly prepping-to-do checklist is which keeps my prepping tasks to less than two hours a week because, you know, I have a life, too.

It's also comforting to know that a trusted family member can pick up the binder and know what we have, where it is, how to use it and what to do in the event that I'm not unavailable.

In an emergency I have all the information at my finger tips without having to search. If we have to evac the house, I can grab this one book and have everything I need to rebuild after the disaster. My binder tabs are:
  • Family Emergency Plan: 1 page, cause you don't have time to read a book
  • Evacuation Checklist: 1 page (also posted on the inside of a kitchen cabinet door)
  • Emergency contacts: utility outage updates, family, friends, neighbors, medical pros
  • Emergency ID cards; photos and descriptions to help identify/locate each family member after a disaster
  • Emergency recipes and food/water prep - points to another binder with more info
  • Natural and manmade disasters; CNBC, power outages, etc. -points to binders with more info
  • Encrypted thumbdrive with copies of scanned
    • Home inventory and insurance policies
    • Legal Documents; will, power of attorney, living will, etc.
    • Medical Information; px lists, immunization dates, power of atty, advanced care directive, etc.
    • Pertinent papers; driver license, passports, military records, deeds, registrations,
    • Financial information: credit cards, banking statements, taxes, etc.
Do you have anything different in your emergency binder? Did I forget anything?

Continuing laundry. Not just wash and dry, but stuff from the last couple of washes that were spread out on my inversion table are now getting folded and put away. The inversion table is now cleaned off and ready to use. Things that needed to be done before we got sick are now getting done. Lots of stuff to do though, but I'm seeing some progress, its a good feeling.

I need/wanted something from amazon and caved and added a case of butter beans to make up the total for free shipping.

I'd like to see how long I could go without going to the grocery store, but with the way things are in the world now I don't think that's a good idea.

God is good all the time

better have DMV vehicle proof of ownership >>> possible checks at official roadblocks for stolen vehicles/RV/boat/trailers

anything to do with your education, training, certifications and previous work history is important >>> might make the difference in a pinch ...

if you have smaller kids that can't self ID - have permanent attachable ID like dog tags - permanent marker to write name & Soc Sec # on body limbs

It's been snowing off, and on all day here, but no accumulation. It's just a wet soggy mess. A good day to stay indoors and read a good book. Cary did venture out to bring more firewood into the house to refill the wood box, but that's it.

I'm still coughing a lot to the point that I'm still taking cough med. Sometimes, I can't catch my breath, and other times I'm short winded when I exert myself. Congestion is getting better, though. I'll be glad when this ordeal is over! I think my mom has it, now. I talked to her, yesterday, and she said she had the sniffles with a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. I'll call and check on her tomorrow morning. I don't like to bother her on Sundays. She is already on antibiotics for an ear infection, so if she does have the virus, maybe those will help.

My shopping has all been done for another 2 weeks. Not much prepping going on now. I think I just need to stick with the basics for a while. It's getting quite expensive to keep stocking the way I have in the past. I got a sale catalogue from Sam's, yesterday. I was hoping that there were items/food on sale this time that I could take advantage of. Nope. Not a single thing.

I put a London Broil in my crockpot this morning along with potatoes, carrots, and quartered a large onion. Mixed a packet of pot roast seasoning mix with a cup of water. Poured that over the whole thing. It simmered all day. I opened a can of my southern peas to go with it, heated some Kaiser rolls, and Cary really complimented me on the meal! I don't know what I must have done differently this time, but he went on and on about how good it all was. Maybe, he's trying to butter me up for something......I'll have to keep my eye on him! :hmm:

I got alot of the seeds I ordered in the mail, and so yesterday I pulled out one of my indoor plant lights, plugged that puppy in, and set out the first forty future plants. I use Park Seed’s seed starting system, as I have had excellent success with it the last few years.

I can set up up to 40 plant starts at one time using that system. I have several different varieties of romaine and buttercrunch lettuces that I am starting up, plus two different varieties of cabbage and two different varieties of broccoli.

I have some garden area that is covered by winter row cover, and that is where I will eventually plant most of these. This is zone 7, so growing under row cover is feasible if the plants are given extra TLC during cold spells.

A few of the Little Gem variety lettuce plants will not go into the ground at all - they are a small, fast growing heading lettuce, and so I will just plant them in one gallon plant pots. I can raise them on the porch, and carry them inside on nights that get too cold.

Would you believe that I STILL had my last 2021 autumn cabbage plant thriving under that row cover as late as yesterday morning?

That cabbage was supper last night.

I have some nice, nutritious, green weeds growing in that garden under the row cover, too - volunteers that drifted in by way of the autumn winds.. My chickens love those wild weeds, and these particular weeds grow well when it is too cold to grow other stuff. So I let the weeds have my garden bed this time of the year. They have only shallow roots, but they help keep ths soil from eroding in a heavy storm, and they are easy to harvest and get totally out of the bed when it is time to put the first 2022 plants into thebgarden.

I have also hatched new baby chicks this week.

They will live inside my home - in a heated brooder - for a few weeks.

At five weeks old, I will move them outside, into the Juvenile Detention Center - a special, pre-fab housing unit I built especially for youngsters too old to remain in a protective brooder, but not old enough to live with the adult hens.

They will remain jailed inside the Juvenile Detention Center until they are old enough to mingle with the adult hens and eat adult layer feed - about 15 weeks old.

The Juvie Center is actually really nice. It is a two story, wooden frame structure with both a Cozy Coop heater for winter and a small fan for summer, inside their sleeping quarters. Their sleeping quarters and nests are in the upstairs portion of the structure. There is a fenced in, rain-protected play area for them downstairs.

Last year, I built an additional 8 foot by 4 foot by 4 foot high, fenced in chicken run extension to their original play area. This is providing them with more room to play, and more access to sunshine.

Their entire housing unit and run is totally enclosed in hardware cloth panels to keep all manner of predators out (that includes adult hens). But their housing unit is right alongside the adult’s chicken yard. This is so that they will be familiar with the adult birds during their growing up time.

When they get to be about 15 or 16 weeks old, they will be paroled from the Juvenile Detention Center and sent to live in the General Population Unit.

They begin to lay eggs shortly thereafter.

The dr thinks daughter and her husband have covid even though their test were negative. Our 4 year old grandson was only stuffy and had a little cough 2 days. But his mom and dad have been home sick since Wednesday. Daughter already called in for today. Not sure about her husband, if he is going in or not. Daughter thought he would not work either. They are both vaccinated. Work required. Grandson is not vaccinated. We are going to take them some homemade potato soup and chicken and dumplings later today. I am also taking some Bear Creek instant soup and canned pineapple. The soups are quick to fix and much better than Campbells stuff they have been eating. We have 2 other family members with covid. They are vaccinated too.

Hubby ordered me another 6 dozen Tattler canning lids. They had a sale on bulk orders. I do most of my canning with Tattlers and use the metal lids on things I give away.

I placed a seed order too. I really didn't need anything this year, but they will store in the freezer fine. I want to try a couple new heirlooms anyway.

The chickens are laying good again. I still need to cull some of the older ones. DD wants me to cull some of her roosters. I need a new rooster, so maybe there is one in her culls that is nice. She just has too many. They were all hatched last spring.

I talked to Mom this morning, and she feels fine. I was so worried that she might have Omicron, but she doesn't.

Tomorrow afternoon, we're finally getting fiber optics run to our house! We'll no longer have to depend on Hugh's Net or Direct TV for our satellite service. Plus, it's a lot cheaper. I'll finally be able to watch videos, too. I'll probably be offline for a while as everything is getting switched over. I don't like the idea of the guy having to come in my house to do his thing, but he shouldn't have to go anywhere in the house, except right to the spot where Cary wants it installed.

I made a butter pecan cake this morning. It's almost cool enough to frost, and sprinkle with chopped pecans. YUM.

I went out to run 3 quick and easy errands. The first, the county clerk/recorder, was closed for MLK day. The second, Dollar Tree, wasn't open an hour after it's usual time, and no sign about when they would open, so no go. Finally, Smoker Friendly was open and my cigs were on sale, $10 cheaper than usual, so cheers to them.

1 out of 3 isn't very good business practice. Pooey on it!

After my obsessing about sugar free hot chocolate, it came today and its total garbage health wise. I should have listened to DH about making my own, I have a good supply of cocoa and milk, both boxed and instant dry.

And I got two bottles of equate tylenol, 500 mg. I went to put it up and found 4 more bottles, i need to keep better track of what I have.

I ordered a couple of things from amazon, including a flat of butter beans and I cancelled the order, I really do not need those things.

Thank you for starting the thread this week, Judy; I appreciate it!

Toosh, I don't suppose you hire out for for building emergency binders, do you? Most of our stuff is in the safe, but it's not nearly that organized!

I was scheduled to work Fri/Sat/Sun nights; and we had snow in the forecast for Saturday morning, so I packed up some stuff and dropped it at co-worker Buddy's house on my way in to work Friday night. I'm glad that I did because we did get snow, and the roads just to get from the hospital to his house were pretty slick so I'm glad I didn't have drive any farther. The roads were clear by the time I got off work on Sunday so I headed on home. Woke up sick as a dog about 2 pm and called in to work - and then got calls from 3 different co-workers wanting to know if I had the 'Rona. Sorry guys, just gastro/headache; knew I shouldn't have gotten that breakfast sandwich at Mc Donalds... (I'm one of the few unvaccinated on the unit so they are all waiting for me to come down with it.) Other than taking time to call in and gulping down some water, I slept pretty much from the time I got home on Sunday morning until noon today - and now I'm ready to go back to bed!!

I'm itching to get my seed orders sent in but am waiting for one more catalog - the one with the yellow pole bean seed. I think it's Stoke's, but I could be wrong... I talked to Hubby about tilling up the 2nd garden - we haven't used it for a couple of years but I think I'd like to have it just in case. It's right next to the clothesline, so I have to be careful what I plant in there, but tomatoes and green beans shouldn't cause a problem. I also want to order more strawberry and raspberry plants, but those will go in a different area.

Yawning so big I can hardly see what I'm typing; guess that means I'd better head to bed... You folks all take care out there; stay safe!!

Over at son's as he works a 24.
Went this morning to meet with the county 4-H guy. Very sweet people. Finished the paperwork and so on and we are now an official group!
Stopped at Dollar general, they were pretty well stocked.
I have a small ulcer. Got some meds for it.
My dog is doing better. Still hobbling but getting around better.
There are a few odds and ends I'll pick up later but don't need anything.
Propane company came out and hooked the wall heater up to the smaller tank for daughters bedroom. Hubs already had it ready to go. He and SIL worked on it over the weekend.
It was 23 and snowing when I left the house this morning. Ug. It's 17 miles of back roads to town so I don't go very often.
Bestest friend holding her own in hospital. Sats are up to 90 now so I'll take it.
We won't be planting till May. I do like to use some tires too. Put empty chicken feed bag in and then compost. Tires warm faster than person soil so can plant earlier. Plus no weeds.
Everyone stay safe.

Renee.. it sounds like we've had the same bug! All I did all day was doze and lay around. Had a splitting headache and my stomach was just enough "off" that I had NO appetite. I caught it either from hubby or 4 year old granddaughter... they both were sick Saturday. It is short lived, thankfully!

If you are wanting half gallon canning jars, start looking in the stores. My husband was lucky enough to snag one that had been put out at Walmart yesterday. Funny, I had been searching on Walmart.com to see if I could order them for pickup, and one magically appeared.

I bought a few cases of them last year at Hometown Market near us. I haven't been back there, lately, so I don't know if they still have them. Last year, there were cases stacked almost to the ceiling. I use them a lot with vacuum sealing.

We use them for vacuum sealing as well. I don't know how many cases I have, but with a FD, they do get used up quickly. I know I can get about 60 eggs into one.

Glad to hear you are feeling better, Summerthyme!

Wanderlore, sorry to hear that you had the bug as well :( I do have to say that it's great that the 4-H leader deal is progressing! I can't wait to hear more about your group and what they are doing!

I got a 20 questions call from Infection Control over my call-in; guess that is now a thing. Told her no respiratory symptoms at all, but she said I needed to come in to test for the 'Rona; told her I was actually driving over for my weekly test right then, and would that do or was there more to it? "Oh? Oh! Yes, that will do fine." No call from IC or the Boss so far, so I guess I passed my test and will have to show up for work tomorrow night

I did wake up with a headache and feeling achy and blah this morning; started wondering if maybe I should have asked for flu test while I was getting the 'Rona swab - took me an hour or so to realize that I hadn't had any coffee since very early Sunday morning...... All better now  Note to self: buy more coffee... LOTS more coffee! And have a plan to ration it....

I did go ahead and strip my bed this morning; have the sheets in the washer and the pillows and mattress pad hanging out on the line - if the cold doesn't kill the germs, maybe the sunshine will!

Our nearby Amish market has half gallon and gallon jars in stock most of the time; the half gallon ones take a wide mouth canning jar lid, but the gallon jars require a one piece lid - you have to either use an oxygen absorber, or poke a small hole in the lid then tape over it to vacuum seal them; it's a pain to do the tape thing, so I usually stick with half gallon and quart jars to vaccum seal. With just the two of us here most of the time, it makes better sense.

Skipping back a few days.... I did hit two Dollar General stores on my way in to work Saturday evening, and got two jugs of cat litter at each one. I had found a couple of coupons for it plus had a $5 off $25 coupon for each store - and got another $5 off $25 purchase coupon at each store to use this coming Saturday. I thought I was going to have to use part of it on the parking lot at work as it was pretty slippery when I went in! Also had $4 coupons for the kind of razors that daughter likes and was able to get her two packages at each store for $2 each after coupons. That was pretty much the extent of my stock up shopping this week. I really need to do another inventory sometime soon - Hubby carries stuff down to the pantry, but just puts it anywhere he can find an empty place - and that's if he doesn't put it in the current use pantry...

I've got another 3 day weekend off work coming up, and the local grocery store/butcher shop has a sale on Sirloin Tip Roasts for $3.99/lb. I plan to pick up enough to can at least 2 cases of pint jars of beef cubes, but will probably have to pick them up one or two at a time. We use the canned beef cubes for beef stew, soups, hot shots (hot beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes), etc... I can the beef cubes with a very light broth made from onion soup mix. Very handy to have in stock in the pantry.

I use to get sirloin tip roasts and cut them in half length wise and broil them like a steak, that was back in the early 70's, really tasty.

Starting to work in my walk in closet (10x12 room), it buldging at the seams. And I really need to work in my office too. Seems like I'm having more energy to get things done, even if its a little here and a little there, I'm seeing progress.

Took boys and friend to Lego club at library. Hit the dollar general that's in the little village and guess what? ALL Christmas stuff is .25 cent! Anything Christmas related is one quarter.
So got a fair bit for like $2. Don't know if you guys will see that where you are but wow good stock up. Got two travel mugs for .25, as they come as a set. Huge box Christmas cards, etc all a quarter.

Well, the guy never came to install our fiber optics, so I guess we'll sit here all day waiting for him to show up. If he shows up at all. I hate it when someone tells me that they will be here a certain time and day, and never show up. He never even called to say he wasn't going to be able to make it.

Has anyone bought the flour tortillas in packages at the grocery store and frozen them to keep them fresh longer? I have 4 packages in my fridge drawer that are getting close to their expiration date. I was wondering if I could freeze them. We use these a lot when I make Mexican type meals, so I like to have plenty on hand.

You can freeze flour tortillas without a problem.

We just put in a Chewy order for canned cat food and litter. We restocked on bags of cat food last week.

A trip to Sam's got more paper towels (we were actually running low). Trips to the grocery store resulted in more coffee, cereal, plastic freezer bags, and canned tomatoes. I am almost done dehydrating veggies as I am almost done with my four cases of quart jars.

We freeze them too, but sometimes they will stick together badly when thawed so pop in microwave for a half a min or so.
You can also stack them and cut in quarters and fry in some oil, makes great tortilla chips.

Got bagel and bread doughs rising. Made a chocolate cake. Boiling big pot taters. Will have corn and rest of ham, all for dinner.

Sherree,
I have frozen tortillas that have been im my freezer for 2 years. I do use them every week or so and I have not noticed funny taste or freezer burn. I do put them in freezer bags. I used to make tortillas all the time but then I moved to town and the grocery store was just around the corner. Now that I am back in the country and 30 minutes from the nearest store I am making them again! I had everything in preps so I didn't have to add anything new to be able to make them. Takes about 5 minutes!

Thanks. I always keep a good stock of them in my fridge. We use them a lot, and it's just too convenient to already have them made up. All I have to do is heat them. I have bought some in the past that had a year's shelf life, but I don't see those much anymore. It's good to know that they will keep well in the freezer. I just need to put mine in freezer bags. I forgot to do that, earlier. Oops.

Went to new Doc today in the little town as Sherree says. Pleased so far. I fired everyone else including my cardiologist. Learned some new herbal medicinal things today. Will start making tinctures tomorrow for my family.
Stopped by the grocery in the little town which also has a WM but its shelves are BARE. A good little meat sale
l but we get a cow butchered every year and eat deer so I have no meat needs but it was a good sale!
We have about 65-70 thornless blackberries that need to be transplated. We are gifting them to whoever wants them. Same with blueberries. Several families that have little ones that have spoken for them.
Have a good evening everyone!

4-H Frontier Explorers

Yay! State waived all fees. We won't have dues.
Just cost of the shirts. Everyone will supply their own fair projects and I'll have most of meeting projects here. Couple notebooks and so on.
I don't think we will do a fund raiser, but definitely will do community service projects.

We're going to do one project on the Fibonacci sequence in nature.

Sorry don't mean to detail thread but excited as I didn't know if I could get through all the paperwork!

I loved having just picked blackberries and strawberries to mix in Cary's oatmeal for his breakfast each morning! We lost all of our thornless blackberries to a severe drought we had a few years back. Lost most of our vineyard and orchard, too. Cary never wanted to restart anything. He's just not much into gardening anymore. I guess it more has to do with age and health problems than anything.
