Has No Life - Lives on TB
Good morning! Best way to greet the new year was a pounce by my son that had lots and lots of hugs, bear hugs, tickles, and raspberries. He even had a few words and learning attempts to hug me and not completely squish me.

And laughing, because he heard the cats scolding me, so he let them out.

Yes, we both have a cold. But I'm already starting to feel better. I expect he will as well in a day or so.

Good morning. Wishing everyone a blessed New Year.

We were at friends last night when my son messaged me. His blood pressure is running high. He will be 40 this summer. He will be seeing a dr as soon as he can get an appointment. He doesn't even have a dr. But I gave him the contact info for ours. He can go to the mediquick dr till he can get in to one he is going to see regularly.

Hubby is dealing with another kidney stone. I pray it passes today. He has had many over the years and now only goes to the dr if he needs an antibiotic for a UTI.

Today I hope to get my canned chicken put away. My kitchen needs to be cleaned too. I didn't do my dishes before we went to our friends house yesterday afternoon.

I thought I would share this here ….. remember in last week’s thread I mentioned what I wondered I should focus on in regards to preps and that I would have to think on it. When this happens, I tend to take pause and ask God to “nudge me” on the direction I should go …..

I awoke this morning with a “nudge” to work on our OTC medicines. I can‘t explain it - I just knew that’s what I should double -check. A few hours later, I get on here and FB and saw four different people / posts mentioning OTC meds and having a hard time finding them. It was like immediate confirmation of my nudge.

I have since seen a couple more posts about it. I feel like our OTC meds are good, but I will definitely be double and triple checking what we have.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I got bad news this morning that my oldest uncle passed at 5:30 this morning. He was 93 yrs. old. Needless to say, we'll be tied up with family gatherings and memorial services for the next few days. This uncle was Mom's oldest sister's husband. I'll certainly be out of my comfort zone while this is ongoing. I'm waiting, now, for Mom to call with all the arrangements and her plans.

Prayers for your Uncle and your family, Sherree...

It's worth paying attention to those nudges, isn't it briches! I like to check on-line prices at places like Wal-Mart, etc.., and then compare them to the sale prices at places like Walgreen's and CVS if you have them locally. CVS usually runs 'Wellness' ads in January. Just checked - and they have Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen as part of a 'Spend $30/Get $10 Extra Care Bucks' Deal; and have lots of different brands of vitamins/supplements on sale Buy One/Get One Free. I'll be picking up another year's worth of my preferred multivitamin, along with a few other vitamins.

CVS also has certain batteries on a buy one get on half price sale - good time to pick some up for those smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Dang coyotes were sure wound up last night - they must have been celebrating New Year's Eve too  I wasn't able to fall asleep until about 4 am because of their running through the yard howling - it had me fussing and worrying about the shed cats; but Hubby said they were all present and accounted for when he got up earlier this morning. I'm pretty sure I need to pencil in a nap on my list for today - I'm already yawning!

I'm still not over the cold Hubby blessed me with last week, but did find one more bottle of the Dollar General brand of cold med to replace the one that we have been using; it seems to help. Not sure what - if anything - else I'm going to get done between now and bedtime but I'm pretty sure a nap is going to be a part of it. After having an odd work/sleep schedule for so many years, it's hard to get used to 'normal people' time.

We'll have the standard corned beef, cabbage, blackeye peas, carrots and corn bread for lunch today for luck in the coming year. With just the two of us being here for New Year's dinner, I decided not to get a brisket out of the freezer and just got a pint jar of home canned corned beef out of the pantry instead. Now I'm trying to decide what to do with the other 3/4 head of cabbage; may just shred and dry it to use in veggie soup. The humidity isn't supposed to get below 80 for the next few days, so it may take a while to dry.

I did manage to go to Aldi, Wal-Mart, and Rural King this past Thursday; was able to stock up on 7 cases of canned and two medium size bags of cat food for the indoor cats, plus a bigger bag of cat food for the outdoor cats. I also picked up another 3 large packages of chicken thighs to cook for the cats - got lucky and found 3 that were marked down with a use by date of the next day - they went right in the big crock pot when I got home. One tub of cooked chicken went in the freezer, the rest in the fridge - except for the bit Hubby and I used fixing supper yesterday - awful kind of the kitties to share their chicken with us... I'm planning to hit WM for more chicken next Thursday and see if I can get lucky with another markdown - never hurts to try!

This past few weeks of being off work, and the month before that at work that was really crappy had me frazzled for a while. I'm finally starting to get back on track with planning things that I need to get done around here by making a list. Since I was used to being in work town 4 days a week (3 work shifts, but since it was night shift, I was there at least part of 4 days), I did a lot of my shopping before or after work. That's probably going to change if I don't have to go to work town. I live close to a small town, and daughter's town is only 9 miles away; work town is 25, but it has an Aldi; otherwise the stores I use are about the same.

Well, my co-worker Buddy just pulled in, so I reckon I'd better post this and pay attention!

Take care all; stay safe out there!

And another main community water line has busted for some weird reason. We are now on a restricted water usage, until further notice! Waiting to see if we go back under a "boil water" notice, too. The water issues we've had recently has sure prompted Cary and I to make sure we restock and add even more water to our storage. If I can just find time to get back to Walmart!

We were blessed with 6 cases of water last week because of our water issues during the freezing rain. I'm in good shape with individual bottles of water, but short on gallon jugs. I also have empty gallon jugs that I keep filled, if necessary I could boil some of that water for potable use.

Praying for you Sherree and Britches, et al.

Thank you for the prayers. I think I’m doing well post surgery. I believe I am healing as I should. Post surgery appointment Wednesday with the surgeon.

I was a little sore last night which surprised me some as I hadn’t been doing much. I guess a reminder to keep doing nothing.

Happy New Year everyone!

I‘m ready for all this holiday stuff to be over with and get back into a halfway normal routine, I can’t keep my days straight. I’ve got my to-do list written out for tomorrow and I got a head start on a few loads of laundry today after the family left.

A local store had boneless/skinless chicken breast for $1.37 a lb last week for a #40 box, so DH bought one. I had planned on taking some of the breast and putting marinades on them and freezing, grilling some for quick fajita meat and canning around #10 since I don’t have much freezer space, but those breast were the size of boneless turkey breast. Although it wasn’t in my plan for Friday I canned it all as I figured that would be the best way to use it, so I added 7 quarts, 10 pints and 11 half pints of chicken to the pantry.

Prayers up for all.

We're moving along this morning at a steady pace. We're going to Walmart, today, to get groceries, before all the bad weather moves in later this afternoon. I need a RX refilled and the D1000 vitamins, too. I'll only be replacing what I've used, and will get more meat for the freezer, since I haven't bought any in a month. I really dread going. Once upon a time, I enjoyed going to town shopping. Not too much anymore.

Tomorrow will be filled with family gatherings, and Wednesday morning will be the memorial service for my uncle. Right now, I don't know if I'll do both. I'll be stepping back into a lifestyle that I walked away from, once Cary and I married. I haven't had a lot of contact with this side of my family since then. If Mom didn't keep me updated as to what all is going on with this side, I would be totally in the dark. I do see some of them from time to time when out and about or on special occasions.

I still haven't made it to walmart myself, nothing really urgent on my list. And with DH working on the pantry if I brought more food in the house, well, he would not be happy. Fresh things would be okay be stuff to be put back I'd have to hide it and right now even I don't want to buy more storage food.

We are starting to run short on jars and totes, may have to go to the store for that.

Strong storms later this afternoon and all night, flood warnings. We are on a ridge so no worries personally about flooding.

I've let the laundry get away from me, so I need to get on that, and the kitchen counters are over flowing again. Fortunately I'm starting to feel better and much less coughing. I may have had a touch of bronchitis, who knows.

One of the shelving units in the pantry room needed to be taken out, DH has done that and started the bones of the shelves he's building. God bless him he does love to build things. And we can actually see day light in that room, its a miracle.

My days of continually stocking more food away has probably come to an end. I'm totally out of room, unless I want to start storing it in view when folks come to visit. I'm having a hard enough time just replacing what I use to keep the level of food storage maintained at the same level. I cleaned out a medium sized spot in the laundry room and have just enough room there for canning garden veggies this year. Hopefully, we'll have a great garden. I still have cases and cases of quart and pint canning jars out in my mini barn, but I'm going to keep buying them and extra lids for a while longer. At least, I still have room out there to store them.

I had a huge supply of new canning jars, but DH has put a big dent in them, still have some left but it would be a challenge if I had to start canning stuff from the freezer.

What I do have are many many cases of jars that need to be washed. They were stored in a shed that got roaches in it, and the cardboard boxes they came in needs to be trashed. And then I have all the canning jars that DH had that are in totes and they need to be washed. It would be nice to have a dish washer to do this but alas I don't.

When I started canning again this year..I found I had a ton of Ball brand lids I had purchased as long ago as 2009....I figured that they were too old...boy was I pleasantly surprised......I found that they sealed great...I just put them in rings and put in a small pot on the stove and heated to a simmer....not a single one of the old ones failed....(the way the old women taught me about 50 years ago.. total old school)....I tried all kinds of different lids this year.... and simmered all the different types....and I only had one jar fail to seal out of over 200 at that was a new Ball lid....and I am pretty sure that was my fault..I don't think I got the ring on tight enough on that jar..it was wide mouth..

None of my lids were stored in temperature control areas they got hot in the summer and cold in the winter..some I had to pry off new jars...lol but they all worked.. .was interested to find out how durable they really were...

I was in Walmart on Saturday and they had lots of canning jars.....two displays..one of wide mouth and one of regular mouth Ball jars..I was surprised they had so many this time of year..... so I say stock up on everything you can...

Today is my birthday. I’m spending it reading and relaxing. I started a new book, and it is SO good. It’s nice outside so I’m going to go back in the sunshine and put my nose back in my book. ❤️

I made the chicken salad and realized I have run out of celery salt. Not sure how that happened, but made a note of that on my list to replace. I think I will double check all my spices (Not today).

Slow and steady.

I, too, have several hundred lids that I bought several years ago, one or two boxes at a time. A friend saw the tote full and said that's why there are lid shortages, to which I said I bought them a few at a time over a period of time and was depriving anyone else of lids. This woman is a good friend but sometimes Karen comes out in her.

Good to know walmart has jars, although they have gone up about $2 a case in price, but still cheaper than they were during the pandemic.

Happy birthday britches.

I was sorta surprised that Walmart had such a huge supply of canning jars of all sizes and plenty of lids, today. I got another case and extra lids.

No shortages to speak of there. Some items were low, but still plenty available, including children and adult cold and flu med's. There were no limits on those, either.

Mostly, I just plugged a few holes, today, with food items I had used over the past 2 weeks. Refilled our water stock and bought extra. I was surprised to see that eggs were the same price, $4.82 for a dozen large. I didn't need any with 4 dozen already in my fridge. Yeah, I use a lot of eggs. Something that I've been neglecting in my preps that I took care of, today. Plastic forks, spoons, and knives! I have tons of paper plates and bowls, but no disposable utensils to eat with. When you go without water to wash everything or have to boil all your dish and rinse water, all of that comes in really handy. I also picked up more aluminum disposable casserole and cake pans with lids of different sizes to have on hand. My stash has gotten low over the holidays. Since it's been a month since I bought any meat for the freezer, I restocked that, today, also (3 lb bags of chicken breasts, roasts, pork chops, bacon, packs of thin sliced center cut round steaks for steak and biscuits, and another half ham, etc.) It was all quite expensive, but I'm thankful it was all there to buy and that we could still afford it on my budget.

All in all, it was a good run. I also stopped in at our new wine shop and refilled the holes in our wine cabinet. I like this store better than our normal one in big town. Prices are about the same.

I'm out of room too, so I'm focusing on being more self sustainable. This year we plan to add water storage to our downspouts, more cold frames, and possibly more livestock.

I have not shopped since November 22 and my list is getting very long. The extreme cold, blizzard etc. kept me from going, then my car battery died and it was 8 days before I got it replaced and now we're having freezing rain, rain and snow for the next 12 hours plus the wind is howling so no shopping for another few days. I picked up milk and eggs locally, but prices are way too high to do more than that here. I do the majority of food shopping at Aldi and have for many years.

My pantry has some empty shelves since I can no longer eat beans of any kind I've been clearing and giving those away. Makes me sad because I love beans plus seeing $'s spent buying flying out the door. I have a turkey, pork loin, ground venison and chicken in the deep freeze that I'd like to get out and canned. I'm still dealing with long covid which leaves me exhausted most days so I'm hesitating to start a major canning project until I get beyond the fatigue.

I have a lot of dried beans that I will be giving away in the future, but for now am trying to clear the grocery store cans. My dil takes the home canned beans but lives in an apartment so can only take a couple at a time. This is so discouraging because beans were always a major portion of my preps as both my late dh and I loved them. Now he's gone and I have medical issues that mean I cannot eat them.

I live neighbor to a senior housing complex and took 12 cans of beans there. They are all outdated but still fine, but the "use by date" Nazis got rid of them. I'm now working on a way to sneak past them as I know there are some people there going hungry. I have a friend that lives there who will assist me with the contraband. We just need to find a time when the Nazis are out of the building for a couple hours to succeed.

We went under a tornado watch during the night, and is still in effect, until 11 am. It might be extended, since the major bad weather for us isn't coming in until this afternoon. It's really spooky outside this morning. Too hot for this time of the year. It was 70 degrees when we got up this morning. Everything is so still and quiet.

I've got empty containers to refill this morning from my shopping trip, yesterday, plus more canning jars to refill and vacuum seal. All just replacing what I've used.

We have to be at Mom's at 4pm, today, and then on to the funeral home to meet the rest of my whole extended family there. We are a very large clan, so I'm sure there will be a crowd. Tomorrow at 11am is the memorial service and a catered lunch will be set up for the whole family at my aunt and uncles' church or country club. I don't exactly know what happens after that.

Cary and I will be stepping out of our comfort zone today and tomorrow to step back into the lifestyle and bump elbows with the "rich and famous". So, we sure could use some prayers if Ya'll feel inclined.

I can honestly say this is the first time in Jan that I have EVER slept with all the windows open. Gonna have another 70 degree day today. I really need to get out and curry livestock before the weather turns nasty again tomorrow. Don't know if I'll have it in me after I get the barn chores finished though. I already unloaded 1000 pounds of feed and shoveled my sand quota for the day.
My wonderful mechanic fixed my car, so that's one worry out of the way. Now I (hopefully) won't have to drive the truck in town traffic, which it doesn't like.
I need to get back to work but I think I'm going to go sit out in the sun with a book for a little while first.
SB, I hope the funeral isn't too stressful for you. I took the high road and behaved myself at Mom's funeral, but there are a couple of people that I really wished I'd smacked upside their heads. (Mom didn't like them either, she would have thought it was hilarious)

Yeah, I'll try to behave myself. I don't want to embarrass myself, or anyone else. Mom's side of the family, aunts, uncles, and first cousins are all filthy rich. Doctors, politicians, large business owners, etc. When I married, I was so sick of their lifestyles and pompousness that I walked away from all of that. I just wanted a small house in the country to raise my family and live a simple country lifestyle. That choice ruffled lots of feathers. It caused me to be looked down upon by the rest of the family, including my parents. I was expected to uphold the family standards and become wealthy and live their lifestyle like everyone else. Nope. Not for me. Cary and I aren't poor by anyone's standards, including theirs, but I just simply don't like their snobbishness towards me for choosing a different path. I've always been a country girl, and I'll die one. They can have their jet setting lifestyles and I'll have mine.

I loved my deceased uncle and my aunt, and I would never think of not honoring him at his memorial service and family gatherings, even if it means stepping back into the family fray.

I'm just chugging along. My son is doing better and becoming more active. That's providing amusement. New job is still going well.

We are under tornado watch today. That'll be fun. We are also having flooding due to the rain. I may go need to move my car back about 50 feet if it keeps up.

The FedEx mess has resulted in some amusement on my part. Now my packages are delivered before 9 pm (if just barely), with accurate pictures, and with bags if it is raining. I'll take those changes.

Meanwhile, just chugging along. Lots to do.

I’ve been feeling a little rough today. I overdid things yesterday and this crazy weather has the fibromyalgia flaring big time. We kept getting awakened last night with the storms and tornado watches/warnings. DH finally told me around 3am to try and go back to sleep that he was going to go to the living room and keep an eye on the radar. Neither of us got much sleep though, and it’s definitely made me feel worse.

I did get all the stuff from under the kitchen sink gone through and decluttered finally. We bought one of those weather tec mats to go in that cabinet, should help on keeping the wood dry the next time a leak happens and we don’t know for awhile. Looks much better and should be easier to find the things since some items are now in a basket instead of loose and falling over.

DH wanted to deer hunt this afternoon so we decided we’d each take care of our own supper since I wasn’t up to doing much but didn’t want to wait on him to eat. Made myself some over easy eggs and toast which hit the spot, first time I’ve made them that way in a really long time.

I didn’t get much done off todays to-do list, hopefully I can get more done tomorrow. The refrigerator needs a good going over and I wanted to make a list of what’s in there that needs to be used soon. Trying extra hard to make the most of all food and not let things go to waste. Meal planning for more than a day or so ahead (and that’s not always successful LOL) has never been my strong suit but I‘d really like to change that.
