Prep Genrl Weekly Prep Thread: December 4-10

Good Morning, All! It's a chilly one here - though considering it is December, I suppose I shouldn't be complaining as the weather hasn't been nearly as cold or snowy as it has some years. The thermometer is showing 18*F right now and there is a pretty heavy frost on the ground, but it is supposed to get up to 40*F by afternoon. We have high temps in the 40's and 50's forecast for this week, but also rain starting in on Tuesday and carrying through Friday, so anything I want to get done outside, I'll need to do today or tomorrow afternoon.

The two younger grandsons are here, so I'm going to enlist them in helping with some yard clean up once it warms up a bit. I'm repeating myself from last week's thread (and the week before, and the week before that lol!), but I still need to get my flower seed heads pulled, the dry beans picked from one of the trellises, tomato cages and trellises pulled, and posts pulled, cleaned, and put away.

While it's still warm and dry I also need to clean my van and get all the winter emergency gear put in it. I'm thinking about going to Menard's to pick up some plastic shelving tomorrow, so I need to put the back seat down anyway; and maybe the middle row seats as well. My emergency bag that holds car stuff (tow strap, tools etc... is in one of the middle row seat wells; and my winter emergency bag is in the other one - guess when I put the seats down to make room for the shelving it would be a good time to sort/organize/replenish both of those bags

We got a propane delivery on Thursday, so are back up to 85% in the tank; that will run us for a bit unless the temps are really cold. We are planning to turn the thermostat down a couple more degrees so I picked up another heated throw when I went to town to pick up the grandsons yesterday - it should be less expensive to run a heated throw to cover one little old lady while she is reading than it is to heat a whole house to a temp said little old lady thinks is comfortable. I've been getting by with a down throw and a heating pad in past years, but now I won't have to move a heating pad back and forth between my feet and my hands.

Well, I hear boys stirring around in their room; guess that's my cue to stop typing and get to work on breakfast for them...

Take care all; stay safe out there!!

Another week closer to Christmas! This week will be sorta busy. Shopping for groceries in small town tomorrow. Wednesday, I'll be seeing Cary's long time PCP for my BP, and maybe, my shoulder. He's a great doctor, and he knows me by me being with Cary on most of his visits. Yeah, sometimes, I go back with Cary, because I want to hear what the doctor has to say.

Today, not much going on. Our home fellowship is cancelled. Since DDIL's brother is down for a visit from Idaho, her, her mother, and sister want to spend the day with him, before he leaves going back home. Today is the first time they've all managed to get together at the same time, because of work schedules.

It's cold, rainy, and just dreary, today. A good day to stay inside by the fire. Our forecast calls for rain every day through next weekend, but temps will be fluctuating from cold to warm. Today's high temp will be 53, but Wednesday's high is supposed to be 76.

I plugged into my TENS unit for my shoulder last night. I had it turned up so high that it actually hurt a bit, but, at the same time, it felt good. Does that even make sense, LOL? I used ice on it off and on, yesterday, too. It didn't hurt much last night, so I got some much needed sleep. I do think it's better this morning. I'll continue to do the exercises, too. There's not been much housework being done, but Cary has been good at helping me with some chores. I don't know what I would do without that man! My soulmate!

When I saw the dates for this weeks, it kind of shocked me. Saturday is Dec 10, oh my. Next year is almost upon us and all that entails with the predictions that have been coming out.

I was just thinking about the cost of the food I've eaten on my 500 calorie days. I payed 1.00 for the canned chicken and the canned squash and cabbage was under a dollar. The chicken is now 1.25 and the veggies are 1.42, so instead of under two dollars for the two ingredients, it will cost me almost 3.00 to replace one meal, I guess I'll be lucky if the store even has the products. There are, of course, other products I can eat but they will have gone up in price too. I'm blessed to have what I have on hand, which is why we prep.

This afternoon we go to Shreveport to a hotel to be in town in the morning for DH's ear surgery. We have to be at the hospital at 5:00 am (I may be repeating myself about this). I'm always greatful for what the VA does for us. My only concern is the truck getting vandalized because we will be at the downtown Holiday Inn. Anything downtown is dangerous. And we will be going to the hospital in the dark.

I was just noticing the date on my canister of collegen, it is 10/24. It says to use two scoops a day, but I use a heaping scoop. Makes the canister last longer of course, and I figure a heaping scoop is better than none. The canister cost almost $30, which is a lot for me. I look for the best price and I'm two canisters ahead. Several years ago I bought a case directly from the company and it tasted awful. I complained to them and basically they said tough. It was cheaper that way, but I don't want 6 canisters that I won't use, four went to waste.

We'll be praying for safe travels for you and your DH and for his upcoming surgery. I was wondering when ya'll were going to be heading out.

Because of food prices these days, we've had to start limiting our Sam's shopping to once a month. I'm still just buying to replace what I use. I'm trying to cook in a way that we will always have leftovers for the next night, like the roast I made, then used the leftover for hash. It's saving me money by doing it this way. If I can get two meals out of one can of chicken (12.5oz) from the pantry, that saves, too. So, I'm in the process of planning out our meals better than I have in the past.

I had some stuff going on last week so forgot to reply to the "Hash" posts. We prefer corned beef hash to roast beef hash, but both are good. I use home canned corned beef or roast beef for the meat, Hungry Jack dehydrated hash brown potatoes (come in a little milk carton shaped container), dried onions, and a bit of shredded carrot (unless I've got some leftover cooked carrots in the fridge). I dump some dehydrated onions in the hash brown container, heat up liquid from the home canned corned or roast beef and pour it in the hash brown container and wait for everything to hydrate. I use fat from the top of the corned beef jar to grease the skillet. I toss everything in a skillet and cook until the meat is heated through, and the hash browns, onions and carrots are done. Then I make a few openings in the cooked hash and drop in an egg and cover it until the egg is done (my guys like them a little runny - ick!)

We too are planning meals to make more meals out of things....
When we go to Costco..those chickens are so worth it...we most often get 4 or 5 meals from one...think of all the flavors of Lipton Sides and how boned chicken and canned, frozen or dehydrated veggies can make a meal from one package along with some onion, garlic, green pepper and celery...or Rice a Roni and chicken and veggies ...plus with all the different flavors...so many varieties that things stay new and different. Variety is the spice of life...the more different recipes from prep food the better..I know a guy who has prepped..with not much more than beans and rice..and salt and pepper..that is not for me..packaged risotto is another great thing to add stuff to.

I saw an MD doctor on the web talking about D3, K2 (mk7) and magnesium...it was very interesting..he said a study of 25,000 people had been done...he said that the 3 in combination would help joint pain...my right shoulder has been a bit sore so I tried and it really made a huge difference.. don't know his name or site...was interrupted and lost the link...but it seems to help my old joints..the real test will be this week 5 days of rain in a row coming

I tried that 2 ingredient biscuit recipe..equal amounts of self rising flour and whipping cream..came out great..makes a soft dough so put plenty of flour on your hands, board, kneed a few times , add flour as needed, roll out and cut biscuits to desired size..bake until browned in a 425 to 450 oven...put the left over ones in a sandwich bag and they were still good the next when nuked...it would even make a good square biscuit to use more like a breakfast sandwich..

I had a few carrots left from my roast. I should have chopped them up and added them to the hash. It was my first time making it, so I was just sort of guessing about all the ingredients. Mine need a bit of added liquid, because it was sort of dry at the end of warming. I'm going to save some of the liquid from the roast next time to add to it.

Once I found out about Rice A Roni and the various ways it can be used in making delicious meals, I stocked up on it. I vacuum sealed it up in pint canning jars. A meat of your choice, plus some added veggies of choice, and a good meal is served. We get 2 meals out of one box, along with some hot bread of choice and a nice salad.

Since we eat what we store, I have lots and lots of recipes to use foods right out of my pantry. I love variety. I don't think I could live off beans and rice, but I have lots of recipes for using those with other ingredients added. Lots of different pastas and spices, too.

Mom always used self-rising flour, so I've always used it, too. I just omit the ingredients that you have to add to all purpose or plain flour when the recipe calls for all purpose flour. I saw that biscuit recipe but have never used it.

hd5574, could you tell me a bit more about K2(mk7). Where I work, K2 is a street drug that makes people bsc (bat xxxx crazy)

Oh - and the two ingredient biscuit recipe too? I make a sweet cream freezer biscuit recipe, but it is like a full biscuit recipe that uses whipping cream (heavy cream) as the liquid. I've never used self rising flour; may have to pick up a bag!

I am talking about vitamin K2....the best form is the MK7....most people think of vitamin K1....that is the one that makes the blood clot..
D3 is a semi hormone...it can move calcium from the bones to the arteries..taking K2 with D3 stops that keeps the arteries clean and the bones strong...as you age D3 is harder to absorb so dh and I also take beta carotene which forms vitamin A and helps the body to absorb ..the D3
This new information said that adding magnesium in the combination helps the joints...
I get my K2 from Vitacost.... their brand..100mcg
Source naturals Beta Carotene 25,000 iu
Nature's way magnesium complex..2 caps 500 mg
D3 we take 10,000 iu every day...he said minimum of 5,000 iu per day..
I am going to be 76 this month and dh will be 70 his next birthday....we have been taking the above for years and we have had no virial infections..my last cold was over 20 years ago....now we are adding the magnesium to the mix....my joints are not very bad but I can do things to get them aching..the magnesium seems to stop that...I also have a book on Vit D3 that mentions all the things that D3 can help...it is mind blowing...all things it can help and heal..

My cousin in AZ goes to an MD who basically only prescribes antibiotics.....he believes that natural things can heal the body....she now takes garlic and is off the blood pressure meds....she is about 3 years younger than me....he just increased the garlic until she had normal blood pressure..she is now fixing her husband's high blood pressure

The is on Amazon..it is Vitamin D3 Miracle
By Jeff T Bowles.

I did know there was a street drug known as K2.....LOL

Do you know how much garlic she takes a day for the high BP? I've tried taking it, but I might not have been taking enough. I'm all for natural medicine, but no matter what I've tried, my BP is still too high. I already take D3 daily and Calcium.

Kyolic garlic formula 109.
This is what she is doing taking
She started with h a couple a day...taking her blood
They just kept increasing the number per day until she had normal numbers..I imagine it depends on the person...no set amount ...
I have never heard of any garlic side effects..

Hope this helps..I also know that olive leaf extract lowers blood pressure....among other things..if I take it I have to be very careful because I have a relative low blood pressure..but try garlic first.

Cooked the ham tonight. OMG! That was amazing. I cleared off the bone and put the bone in the crockpot for broth, along with the pan drippings.

Some will be lunch tomorrow. The rest will be frozen for other meals.

Maybe next weekend, I'll make large batches of the brine. Then I'll pull the two other hams from the freezer and repack them with brine. That way, next time all I have to do is defrost it and cook.

Got a lot of work done on Christmas gifts and on cleaning. My Mom's canning mat is to the hand stitching point for the binding. And I'm working on a piecework double oven mitt for my nephew. He's moved into his first home. By next weekend I should be working on the one for my SIL. If there is enough time, I will be doing a couple of square ones for Mom, nephew, and SIL.

We were planning to go grocery shopping, today, but the weather is terrible, so we decided not to go. It's pouring down rain, and it's supposed to keep this up all day. I looked over my shopping list, and there's nothing on there that can't wait. Cary and I get paid again next week, so we're going to wait, until then. That will make us only shopping once this month. What a savings! It's so good to be able to walk into your pantry to do your grocery shopping from time to time. Although, it will take more to replace what I use by skipping this week, but I still think it will save us money.

My shoulder is so much better this morning. I'm continuing with all the exercises, Aleve, and using the tortuous TENS unit. I had it turned up so high last night that it was actually moving my whole arm, but it still felt so good, even though it was painful.

I'm making ham, cheddar cheese, and fried egg sandwiches with hash browns on the side for our supper, tonight. Today, our doggie's heart worm pill is due, and the only way I can get him to take it each month is to chop it up into small chunks and mix it with scrambled eggs and cheese. Thus, our supper, tonight. I have tried to put his pill in other things, but he will not have it. He loves eggs and cheese, though. The cheese melts onto the pill, and he never knows he's getting it.

Have you tried Pill Pockets? My cat takes thyroid meds twice a day and he gobbles down the pill pockets. They make them for dogs or cats.

Prayers up for Judy’s DH and safe travels for them.

SB~ Definitely save the liquid from your roast, it makes a wonderful base for a soup too. I strain it, refrigerate and then scoop off the fat. Prayers that your shoulder keeps improving.

hd~I’ve made those two ingredient biscuits and they’re delicious!

Renee~ Your hash sounds really good.

The weather is so gloomy here today, rainy (which I‘m grateful for) and cold. Today is laundry day and I took a couple of throw rugs to drape over a couple of chairs on the back porch to dry not realizing how cool it was, so I’ll be finding a warmer/drier spot for them.

We have plenty of leftovers from yesterday‘s family meal so I don’t have to cook today, yay! Besides laundry chores I’m trying to get some lists made of things I need to get done for Christmas, gifts still to buy, wrapping gifts when no kiddo’s are here and other shopping. DH wants to make a Costco and Sam’s run before Christmas (my heart just isn’t in it LOL) especially since Costco means we’ll have to go either to Nashville or Franklin. Those trips wear me out for days.

Thanks for the prayers and good wishes. The surgery went well, he’s still in recovery and I’m hanging out in the truck. I was uncomfortable in the waiting room, and my knees were killing me. We got a front row parking space, so the truck is not far. I can stretch my legs out and they feel much better and I even got a little shut eye.

So just waiting on him, then get him something to eat and then the trek home.

It's supposed to rain thru Sat --- blech! So I had to go run some errands early in case it floods and I can't get out until the middle of next week. I really didn't have enough trash to bother to go to the dump, but I took it and got rid off it. The cat and I sat down to rest in our barn chair yesterday morning and it collapsed out from under us. It wasn't repairable so I threw it out.
I got the old horses their senior feed and stocked up on shavings. I don't know if those come part way by rail or not, but the garage is stacked full and that should last me until mid Jan unless the barn floods.
I finished most of my Christmas cards and got them mailed off before the kitten and puppy managed to eat them.
Cut down some limbs that were in the way and got one of them cut up for kindling. I will have to get after hubs to make him get some more wood in the house this afternoon, there's nothing small enough left that I can cut, and if we have freezing rain the power will go out.

No, I've never heard of those. We've tried using peanut butter, raw ground beef, plain rolled up cheese, etc., but nothing works except scrambled egg and cheese.
Seriously, give them a try. I have never met a dog or cat that could resist them. Worth every penny. They are soft and kind of like play dough texture. Put the pill in the pocket, mush them closed and down they go.

Judy glad to hear hubby's surgery went well. Safe travels home. Like many of you, we had rain today. Warm but very wet. Fog alert most of the day. Cooked for the neighbors tonight. One man's wife died about a month ago and he is housebound. We usually take something to him that he can eat for several days. Turnips, butterbeans, and sweet potatoes out of the garden and a little smoked pork loin. Unfortunately that did NOT come out of the garden! But I will let you know when I figure out how to grow a smoked pork loin! We feel calm and peaceful even though the world looks chaotic. Obviously that is a God gift given to us. Hope everyone has a peaceful and restful night.

Liking the new job. A lot less stress. It's nice to finish at around 5. I'm getting a lot done in the evenings because I don't have a headache when I'm done.

FedEx misdelivered two packages from two different sellers this past weekend. As of this morning, I got a text that said if I didn't find the packages in the next 48 hours, contact the shipper. Screw that nonsense. It had already been 48 hours. I contacted both companies and asked for replacement orders by a different shipper.

Getting Christmas gifts done. At this rate, two will be done by this weekend. That leaves one more to sew before I consider a few addons for those folks. Found Dad a dovetail jig and letter stencils/jigs for the router. That will let him explore a few more wood things to sell. He's been making really nice cutting boards, quilt ,hangers, and earring hangers. And did well at a craft show this weekend. This weekend I'll take the time to clean them up and double check to be sure all the parts are there.

Looking forward to the Cricut. Found out that there are specific mats for cutting fabric. Mischief planned, like cutting fabric patches in the shapes of owls.

Well, off to put the stock from that amazing ham into the fridge. And maybe do some dishes. And more of the hand stitching. Because I'm staying up late waiting for another FedEx delivery.

Things have been a bit out of sorts here the past few days. Thursday, found out a friend had passed, Saturday was an aunt's funeral, had a gig Saturday night so I got home around 4 am Sunday.....blah...
Did manage to top a few things back off...coffee was on sale, misc. spices and such.
Replaced the control board on one of the ac units...dc to dc converter decided it wanted to start "singing." Time to break out the diagnostic gear and see if the old board can be saved.
Stay safe, all y'all.

It's still pouring rain this morning. I think we're supposed to get a break, Thursday, then rain for the next 7 days. Forecast high temp today is 74. December, January, and February are supposed to be our coldest months, but we'll see this year.

I finally got all of my shoe orders in. Cary still lacks one pair, and he'll be done, too. He sent off a book order for us, yesterday. 2 for me and one for him. Mystery/ Suspense thrillers are what we like with a little romance thrown in for good measure for me.

Tomorrow is my doctor's appointment. BP this morning was 138/91. I have a 2 week log of my BP readings, morning and afternoon, for him to be able to see what's been going on with it. I didn't use the TENS unit last night, and shoulder is a bit stiffer this morning. I'll go back to using it, tonight. I also cut back on the Aleve, too.

Since we'll already be in big town for my appointment, we're going to go ahead and make our monthly Sam's run. I need to get a few items for our Christmas meal, plus restock my pantry of items I've used that I always get there. I don't want to be back in big town, until after Christmas.

Tonight's menu.....bacon and pancakes! I haven't made that in a while, and Cary loves breakfast food for supper from time to time, just like last night's meal.

DH loves breakfast foods, but not for supper, I do though. Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with him, oh well, I love him anyway.

We are so glad to be home. The cup came off of DH's ear and he's so glad, cause it was hurting his ear. His pain level is manageable, he has a 10 pound weight limit for two weeks, so he's scrambling for something to do.

I'm being lazy today, more than usual and getting some much needed rest from being so stressed out.

We are so blessed to have so many people praying for us.

I do believe that Cary could live off bacon and eggs. He never tires of eating them no matter the time of day.

What kind of surgery did your DH have on his ear, if you don't mind me asking?

LOL, men can be hard to live with when they are under limitations. As me how I know!

Tympanoplasty, with mastoidectomy - right ear. What ever that is, I don't think either one of have a clear understanding of it. The issue started with bleeding from his ear, they said it was an infection, but only gave him drops, two times. And after several months "they" said he needed surgery to fix the problem, although it will not help his hearing.
