I can't disagree - WHATS THE ANSWER? you're NOT gonna "vote it away".

better we take an aggressive stand against it becasue the alternative is that we continue on our merry slide into thuggery, widespread criminality and growing brutality. eventually that leads to threatening virtually everyone and anyone out and about. what comes after that? the eventual human butchery in the streets and oblivion?

time to recognize we'd better stop the progressive madness. for any "given event or happening" you'll find you're either at the CAUSE POINT of it or you're at the EFFECT POINT. we can see how well being the effect point is working out.

bear in mind - NOBODY is suggesting that we as individual citizens begin the wholesale slaying of thugs in the street - AT THIS POINT. rather what 's intended is actually preventing that from occurring. HOW? simple - those with the authority and right to protect their property (think the of station owner in Philly as an example) begin doing so. this should REASONABLY extend to grocery stores and other similar establishments nation wide. IF it does NOT then WHY does it not? seems to me that's what needs to change. further those establishments SHOULD have the collective power to act toward achieving that end.

WHY is that not being done?

Self Checkouts, the people wearing the Wally World shirts doing nothing and the Useless 'Door Exit/Receipt Checker.

I've often considered loading a bunch of crap into the cart, bagging it then ringing up a lot of small items-single serve candies and stuff, a few boxes of Ramen and watching as they 'Scanned' the receipt, glanced at the top of the cart and waved us thru.

Heck, needed some rubber boots for outside, got and paid for them at Sporting goods, tossed the receipt into one of the boots and droppedthe bag into the cart. We then shopped and, at checkout, piled all the bags in together. Woman at door looks at the Receipt and waves us thru. I could take half the jewelry counter if I wished, bag it and out it on the bottom.

Useless.

Shoplifters come in many different flavors, from the poor, internet sellers,
average middle class on into the extremely wealthy.

The poor group is hammered in court, no mercy for them.

Many of the shoplifters that I've arrested over the years carried enough
cash on them to bail out of jail. They seem to be looking for a thrill?

I can think of one lady, middle 50's, well dressed and worked in the local
courthouse. She knew what she had done was wrong, but when she appeared
in front of the judge, her story changed to that of an innocent victim,
it was just an accident and didn't mean to do it. Not guilty for her.
A lie with a sincere smile goes a long ways.

I can think of another shoplifter, extremely wealthy business owner, who paid
$250K to a local non-profit for it to all go away.

This is the same business owner that I had written a speeding ticket to.
He plead not guilty on the speeding ticket, and received a court trial where I was order, as the witness,
not to show up for court. Dismissed.......

Oh but clearly the solution is to eliminate cash bail like Illinois is now doing, and many other states have already done.
That will solve all your problems.

I noticed just last week that one of our local Walmart’s now has two security guards at the exits. They didn’t appear to be doing much other than chatting. My son works at Target and they regularly have scammers coming through. He’s had counterfeiters, people coming in with stacks of cash that they count in front of him while secretly pocketing some of it, and he’s even rung someone up and bagged everything just to have that person run with the merchandise before paying. Luckily he’s caught most of the scammers. I never realized how prevalent it was until he started working there. We live in a wealthy area of Charleston.

It has gotten so bad it is no longer funny.

They have about a dozen guys who arrive 3-4 times per week. Load up a shopping cart full of expensive items, then hit the emergency exit load up a car / truck and are gone in less than 15 minutes.

The staff is told not to do anything to stop them other than standing in front of the exits and hope they don't get assaulted

Other than that, nothing else is done

I’m sure no one there wants to stand in front of the exit unarmed and hope they don’t get assaulted! That’s ridiculous to even suggest that your employees do that.

I have something that may cut the theft way down. Install video cameras at store entrances along with security. People wearing masks would have to remove them before entering so the cameras would get a good look. They can put them back on in the store if they are afraid of catching something. If you don't comply you don't get in.

I know of a wal mart in nj that was in a nice area. Very busy. But…the criminals a few Towns over had no wal mart…just a big ghetto…the shoplifting was out of control as they all drive to this one…So they closed it.

90 percent of the theft is just going out the door. Less than 10 percent is done at self checkout. Reason we can’t confront someone we think is stealing is twofold one our safety but biggest issue is someone accused someone and they didn’t ding ding we have a giant lawsuit they they will win. Drugies commit largest amount. Stupid people are second pros steal biggest dollars but stupid people trash more stuff.

All retailers have to do is add an ai piece and have a tunnel corrider to enter and exit that auto locks if it detects a shop lifter and then gases them for police to pick them up if they get violent, or will not allow them to leave until the item is paid for.

Make the corrider impossible to destroy and it will literally fix the issue after a while.
