Texas lineman off team, sorry for racist Obama slur

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Former Texas backup lineman Buck Burnette apologized Thursday for posting a racial slur on his Facebook page about Barack Obama being elected president.

Burnette, a sophomore who played in seven games this season, left the No. 5 Longhorns on Wednesday. The team said Burnette violated team rules but would not elaborate.

His Facebook page had been deleted Thursday.

In a statement sent to The Associated Press, Burnette said he "made a terrible decision" to post a text message he received about Obama's victory that contained a racial slur.

"That lack of judgment on my part has had devastating consequences," the statement read. "Those that know me understand that this is not a true reflection of my character. I sincerely apologize to everyone that I have offended. I have had the opportunity to apologize to my teammates and coaches and have received support from many of them in return."

Burnette started one game at center in 2007 as a redshirt freshman and was a high school star at Wimberley High School, near Austin.

I'd like to see the "team rule" they claim he violated.

As with other cases like this, schools should not take actions against students for non-criminal activities done on personal time (unless he really did violate some sort of rule he agreed to follow when he joined the team).

For those curious... the most common racist comment I've heard is that "Obama is just another n*g*e*r begging for change"

I believe they do have to agree to an honor code in order to play. School rules state that what they do off-campus will be taken into consideration, since the team members are considered public figures, and what they do reflects on the school and the NCAA.

(Not saying I agree with this; just telling you what UT says)

Probably some sort of "morals clause" that he agreed to in order to play for the team. Ironic, if he'd posted something nasty about Sarah Palin or Juan McRINO; that kid would have been lauded as a hero and made starter by order of the University President.

Can you cite some evidence for this claim, other than your hind end?

Remember the people that hung the effigy of Palin? THAT was considered a 'Halloween art display.'

I feel sorry for this kid. My heritage was called 'garlic noses' by Wright. We're still waiting for the apology the Italian american league asked for. Guess we are really headed back to the days of slavery. Only this time the slaves are white.
RIP America. You are no longer the home of the free :bwl::dstrs:

That's because it was a Halloween display. So were the ones featuring Obama.

I fail to see how that's related to BL225128's claim.

You're so right. We've seen the double standard over and over. Well...at least some of the TB2K members don't have their blinders on.

A Halloween display of a candidate hanging? Thats a hate crime. But the law said it wasn't classified as a hate crime because 'she's white.' :screw: If I had a display like that featuring O'samabama (back then) the cops would have cuffed me & stuffed me. And you KNOW I'm right.

That would have been regarded, in today's climate, as a terroristic threat as well as a racial slur by the university.

No, you're wrong. There were instances of people hanging Obama effigies for Halloween where there was no legal action because it was done on private property, same as the Palin thing. Did you notice that one wasn't illegal either?

The two instances where people got in trouble over Obama effigies involved hanging them on someone else's property.

Hanging anyone in effigy is despicable behavior (burning them is equally disgusting to me), but it's not illegal.

If I drop a hammer and hear it fall, I don't need to look down to know that it has fallen. This is the same with political correctness in that colleges routinely play political favorites, giving the left wide latitude in whatever hijinks that they engage in, from stealing conservative college newspapers, vandalizing computers and offices, or making good on physical threats of violence.

And speaking of hinies, you certainly have the stains which prove your familiarity with Barry's.

So, why don't you use that big ol'brain of yours and show us the examples of where any leftwing protestors on college campi suffered for their portrayal of any conservative politician in the last 25 years. Names, dates, etc.

When Sarah Palin was the the effigy-ee this was NOT the case. The law was NOT applied equally.

I'm smelling cooked frog.

Sorry, BL225128, but you're the one who made the claim. The onus is on you to provide proof.

(hint: you won't be able to)

Feel free to attack me some more. I understand that you feel cornered when called upon to back up your claims, and attacking me makes you feel better.
