Canada halts flights from U.K. in response to new coronavirus strain
Canada joined several European nations in halting incoming flights from the U.K. on Sunday in an effort to prevent a new, potentially more contagious strain of the coronavirus from spreading to this country.

Canada joined several European nations by halting flights from the U.K. on Sunday in an effort to prevent a new, potentially more contagious strain of the coronavirus from spreading to this country.

CBC News obtained a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by Transport Canada stating that all commercial, private and charter flights transporting passengers from the U.K. will be suspended as of midnight tonight. The restriction doesn't apply to cargo flights, aircraft landing for safety reasons or flights that land for technical stops where no passengers disembark.

The notice said Transport Minister Marc Garneau "is of the opinion it is necessary for aviation safety and the protection of the public, to prohibit the [operations] of commercial air ... from the United Kingdom for the transport of passengers on an inbound [flight] to Canada."

Data from the flight tracking website Flight Aware show that at least 10 nonstop flights departing from London airports arrived in Toronto, four in Montreal, and two in Vancouver over the past week. Some of those flights continued on to other destinations, including Calgary and Edmonton.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair tweeted that the restrictions "will be initially in place for 72 hours after which time they could be extended or enhanced."

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said in a statement passengers who arrived in Canada Sunday from the U.K. are now subject to enhanced screening measures, including stronger scrutiny of their quarantine plans. Passengers who arrived in previous days from the U.K. will receive direction from the Canadian government, the statement said.

Air Canada said it would temporarily suspend all flights between Canada and London's Heathrow Airport as of Monday. Two final flights will depart from Toronto and Vancouver and fly to London Sunday evening, the airline said.

"We regret the impact of the government directive to immediately suspend flights on our customers' travel plans in the middle of the holiday season and will continue to monitor this dynamic situation closely and adjust the schedule as appropriate," the statement said.

The decision to restrict U.K. flights followed an afternoon meeting of the Incident Response Group (IRG), a group of cabinet members and senior government officials.

Garneau, Blair, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Health Minister Patty Hajdu, Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc all attended the meeting.

No cases of new strain identified yet in Canada
Hajdu and Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, updated the group about the genetic variant of the virus that causes COVID-19, "including its reportedly higher transmissibility," according to a readout of the call from the prime minister's office.

"Genetic variation of viruses such as the one that causes COVID-19 is to be expected and have been previously observed in parts of the world this year," PHAC said in a statement. "While early data suggest that the United Kingdom variant may be more transmissible, to date there is no evidence that the mutations have any impact on symptom severity, antibody response, or vaccine efficacy."

PHAC said no cases of the new strain have been identified in Canada, although public health officials and researchers are working to determine whether the strain is already present.

The IRG meeting was convened as several European nations restricted travel from the U.K. after Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed on Saturday that a new variant of the coronavirus that is more than 70 per cent more transmissible than existing strains is driving a rapid rise in the number of people testing positive for COVID-19 in the U.K.

Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Italy all blocked flights from the U.K. — some for 48 hours and others for longer. Germany called a special crisis meeting of EU countries scheduled for Monday to co-ordinate the response to the virus news among the bloc's 27 member states. Champagne told the IRG about the measures other countries took in response to the new variant, according to the statement.

With a new strain of coronavirus sweeping across southern England, several EU countries have stopped travel to and from the U.K. 3:27

Canada has severely restricted travel into the country since March. Broadly, only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and specialized foreign workers — most of whom travel from the U.S. — are granted entry. There are some exceptions, including for close family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to Canada.

Travellers who are granted entry to Canada are required to quarantine or self-isolate for 14 days upon entering Canada.

The prime minister's office said the new measures provide an additional layer of protection.

"These new measures complement the robust travel restrictions and border measures that have been in place since March 2020, notably mandatory quarantine measures that require travellers to quarantine or isolate for 14 days immediately upon entry to Canada," the prime minister's office added in a statement.

Opposition politicians press for action
Prior to Trudeau gathering with his cabinet ministers, Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet called on the government to follow Europe's lead and impose a travel ban on the U.K. to prevent the strain from reaching Canada.

"It will be several months before the pandemic is contained, especially with the number of [vaccine] doses available remains far too small," Blanchet said in a statement released in French.

"If a variant of COVID-19 were to spread with increased speed among vulnerable people, the effects could be devastating on people's health as well as on the health-care system and staff already under tremendous pressure."

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh echoed that call in a Twitter post, saying that while more information is needed, flights from the U.K. should be suspended in the meantime.

"With vaccines still very rare, if this new strain gets loose here in vulnerable populations, it will be a disaster," his post read.

Conservative health critic Michelle Rempel Garner called on the Liberal government to provide more information about the new genetic variant and to explain any decision to restrict flights.

"Canadians are looking for accurate information about the new variant of COVID-19 that has been identified in the United Kingdom," Garner said in an emailed statement.

"The ties between our two countries are extremely close, with many Canadians' families overseas ... if the Trudeau government is considering a similar travel ban, they need to clearly communicate this to Canadians and their rationale for doing so as soon as possible."

The end times are here.
I have read that the original covid was never isolated, scientists had to guess what it was and what it looked like.
So how can they identify a more virulent strain? How would they know it's different?
To me, this is just another lie to stampede and terrify the sheeple.
I don't believe these liars.

U.S. Officials Urge Calm Over New Covid-19 Strain Abroad
Scientists say mutations are unlikely to affect efficacy of vaccines; no evidence variant is in U.S.

Officials across the U.S. urged calm and continued caution Sunday, following the identification of a new strain of Covid-19 in the U.K.

Researchers in the U.K. estimate that the variant could be as much as 70% more transmissible than more established strains. Some of the changes are on the spike protein on the surface of the virus, potentially enabling it to more easily cling to and enter human cells. Scientists don’t believe it is any more deadly.

The new strain was first detected in England in September and was identified last week. The European Centers for Disease Control said Sunday that a few cases of the new strain had been reported in Denmark, the Netherlands and possibly in Belgium. A similar mutation has appeared in South Africa, scientists said.
Moncef Slaoui, the chief science adviser for Operation Warp Speed, the U.S. government’s coronavirus response program, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that health officials don’t know whether the new strain is already in the U.S., but they are closely watching it.

Notes on the News
The news of the week in context, with Tyler Blint-Welsh.
He noted that viruses mutate frequently and RNA viruses such as the coronavirus are particularly susceptible to changes. However, the protein cannot mutate very much, so the mutations are unlikely to affect the efficacy of vaccines.
“Up to now, there hasn’t been a single variant that would be resistant to the vaccine,” Dr. Slaoui said.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said Sunday that the mutation doesn’t mean the virus is more dangerous.
“We don’t even know if it’s really more contagious yet or not, or if it happened to be a strain that was involved in a super-spreader event,” Dr. Adams said. He said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that there weren’t any indications it would affect efforts to vaccinate people.
Some countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy, raced to ban travelfrom the U.K. after it announced new shutdowns Saturday. The top U.S. official overseeing coronavirus testing said he didn’t foresee a quick U.S. ban on travel with the U.K.
“I really don’t believe we need to do that yet,” Adm. Brett Giroir said on ABC News’ “This Week.” “We have not seen a single [virus] mutation yet that would make it evade the vaccine.”

The U.S. State Department recommends travelers reconsider visiting the U.K., while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends against going there.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, on a call with reporters Sunday, slammed U.S. health officials for not taking a stronger stance against U.K. travel, saying the U.S. should consider a ban on flights or, at minimum, require travelers be tested for the virus. He called it a repeat of the spring when flights from China were halted before flights from Europe.
Coronavirus Daily Briefing and Health Weekly
Get an early-morning briefing about the coronavirus each weekday and a weekly Health newsletter when the crisis abates.
Other people are banning people coming in from the U.K.; we have six flights a day coming in from the U.K. and we are doing absolutely nothing,” said Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat. “Today, that variant is getting on a plane and landing at JFK. How many times in life do you have to make the same mistake?”
The governor said that the possibility the new virus may already be here “kept me up last night.”

Erica Pan, California’s acting health director, said the state is seeking more information about the new strain, including why British scientists believe it is more transmissible, but called that finding a concern.
Dr. Pan said California’s system of tracking the genome sequencing of Covid-19 cases hasn’t seen any evidence of the U.K. strain there, but if people are continuing to travel it could arrive at any time. She said that refraining from travel is important not just to keep from spreading Covid-19, but to keep new strains localized.
“It’s just another point of this virus continuing to keep us all on our toes,” Dr. Pan said.
Aides to President-elect Joe Biden said his team would receive a briefing on the strain early in the week. Mr. Biden’s public health adviser and his choice for surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the strain “does not change what we do in terms of precautions,” adding that wearing masks, keeping physical distance and washing hands “are still the pillars of preventing Covid transmission.”
Viruses mutate constantly as they replicate and spread. Many variations don’t result in any functional changes, though sometimes one or a series of changes can affect the infectiousness or the severity of a virus.
It is challenging to distinguish whether a specific variant becomes more prevalent simply by circumstance or something functional that makes it more virulent, scientists say.
“If it was just a random mutation that was becoming more common, I’d lean on epidemiological circumstance,” said Trevor Bedford, an associate professor in the vaccine and infectious disease division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
But because the new strain does have some changes on the spike protein that could affect its function, “we have more concern that something real is going on,” said Dr. Bedford, who is co-developer of Nextstrain, an open-source project that analyzes and tracks the genomes of pathogens including the new coronavirus.
There is currently no evidence that these changes might mute the impact of the Covid-19 vaccines that are being rolled out.
A Moderna spokesman said that while studies continue, its data so far indicate its vaccine will likely work on the U.K. variant.
Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE are monitoring coronavirus mutations and working to generate data on how well serum samples from people treated with their vaccine are able to neutralize the new strain, a Pfizer spokeswoman said in an email.

So much dumb.

All a 48 hour ban accomplishes is political theater and more FEAR.

I t certainly doesn't stop the spread of avirus.

And with all the coments from authority figures about how the vaccine should stop it, makes me tighten my tin foil hat a smidge.

y'all know that it's looking like 1984 was an instruction manual albeit outdated. I'll give a new years prediction. Flash forward 3-5 yrs when this great reset has reset, when our freedoms are a fading memory, and there will be people saying 'if I only knew then what I know now, I would have started shooting back then'.

The social anarchy has now officially begun, in London, England. The chaos is staggering. Masses of frantic people stuffing on train platforms, trains etc. The increasingly FASCIST government of Boris Johnson sending in police, well I'm not sure what the feckless British police are going to do against this level of MASS HYSTERIA.

The link is below.

Chaotic scenes as Londoners try to escape the city before midnight lockdown. Police deployed to prevent non-essential journeys.

  • The sudden announcement that London would be put on lockdown resulted in many Londoners trying to escape the city before midnight.
  • Trains were fully booked shortly after the announcement was made.
  • Footage emerged of a crowded St Pancras train station. Matt Hancock called it "totally irresponsible behavior."
  • Police will be deployed at stations to prevent non-essential journeys being made, the Transport Secretary announced.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.
Following yesterday afternoon's announcement that London would suddenly be put on lockdown, crowds of people made a last-minute attempt to escape the capital.

Train stations were mobbed as desperate Londoners tried to flee Tier 4 restrictions. Those trying to leave the city had a deadline of midnight before the tougher restrictions came in.

Trains out of London appeared to be fully booked, according to BBC journalist Lewis Goodall.

There were no trains available from the major terminals at Paddington, Kings Cross or Euston after 19:00 GMT, reports the Independent.

Yes, the new and improved Chinese version. It is unclear how lethal this mutant strain is, just that it spreads faster. Still, the near total chaos in London means the system is nearing total collapse into chaos. Nobody believes the authorities at this point. The vaccine looks to be a half assed, low quality control, and dismal production and distribution efforts.

Seriously, London just popped tens of thousands, at a minimum, of hysterical, panicked people out like one pops a zit.

I watched that movie 28 days. The pics from the train stations show PANIC.

Nightwolf is researching this "new" strain, he said the way that the UK Government is reacting is more what would medically be expected for a sudden outbreak of Small Pox or Ebola; so either they are just idiots (I don't doubt that is possible) or there is something else also going on here.

He's going to research the medical side and I'll be looking for hints on the political/BREXIT/trade breakdown side.

Nightwolf did saw that real medical protocols if there WERE an outbreak of something as serious as Ebola, Small Pox or a new fast-killer disease would be to NOT give people a few hours to get out of Dodge.

In those cases, the rule is to lock down EVERYTHING and FOR REAL, RIGHT NOW! He said if that were the case, the Prime Minister should have said, as gently and as firm as possible - you MUST get HOME NOW!!

Probably with the military already ready to shut off every major route out of the area, all the trains stop as they get to the station, etc.

That still creates some chaos for many people - they might have to run special buses to get the elderly home and NHS workers to the hospitals but most people go home and they stay there - no several hours to leave.

Otherwise what will happen is exactly what did happen last night, people will spend hours in crowded stations, trains, buses, boats, highways, etc all fleeing the city (just like they did in 1666) and take whatever the current plague is with them.

Northern Ireland is having an emergency meeting in about 4 hours (late at night at 9pm) to decide what they are going to do next.

I will update on the new strain as I get information from Nightwolf.
I’d love to call my daughter to get the “lowdown.”
She sets protocol up with Physicians for oncology research drug studies then manages all the data until the study closes.
She’s put her Father (he has black lung) on tight (go nowhere) “lockdown” 3x.
Besides that all I heard way back in March was, “This chyt is real Mom and it will mutate!”
She can’t tell us what info comes across her computer screen.
We don’t ask.
I’d sure like to know. She seems to have a heads up before it goes south.
She is not an alarmist. Very level.
She seems ancy about Covid.
H1N1 was a bullet missed.
I can’t even remember how many times it mutated.
I remember the drug companies had to hurriedly keep changing up the vaccine as it was ineffective every time it mutated.
My kid’s company at that time were in competition to get the final effective vaccine.
I won’t be telling her I’m not taking that vaccine.
I don’t tell her what I think about the possibility this is a designer bio-weapon.
Nope, she’ll have me committed or something.
I have my doubts on this vaccine working the way it was rushed through the human studies.
I doubt they know what the long term effects will be.
We are guinea pigs as far as I’m concerned.
It’s all about the money.
Thx to NightWolf for his time researching and you sharing the info!

I just think that Boris HIMSELF panicked, instead of using the “calm gentle approach”, as you called it, no matter what the reason behind this sudden lock down.
Surely he had to have known the kind of chaos this would create, so to me, panic at the top is the only logical solution for doing this!

Or, it just could be he DOES know more at this point(?)

Well, to be fair, one can make the case that populations are best served by treating a fast moving and debilitating illness from their home locales, and not where the heck ever they ended up on their holiday jaunts.

Resource allocation and all the pesky, but vital components, that are make or break in these situations would likewise be best served if you could get everyone to go home, stay out from underfoot and out of contagion zones, and try to slow roll this thing until you know what you're up against.

That is the trouble with every evil liberal effort- it always sounds so reasonable, but has been perverted to be used against us.
