Huge queues have been seen at stations and on the roads as desperate Londoners flee the capital ahead of Tier 4 misery from Sunday.
On Saturday afternoon, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed that a third of England - including London and swathes of the home counties - will be thrust into a brutal 'Tier 4' lockdown from midnight.
The draconian bracket will see non-essential shops shut, and travel restrictions including a 'stay at home' order for Christmas Day itself - even though Mr Johnson insisted just days ago that it would be 'inhuman' to axe five-day festive 'bubbles'.
The introduction of the new tier seeks to curb a new more infectious strain of the virus, Johnson explained during a press briefing.
Christmas plans for millions of Londoners were thrown into doubt by the Prime Minister's announcement, with many planning on travelling out of the capital during the relaxation of coronavirus measures between December 23 and 27.
But with the planned relaxation cancelled, and the new rules coming into force from midnight, people were tonight scrambling to get out of London while they still could.
Passengers faced packed train carriages out of London as many attempted to flee the capital following the announcement of tougher coronavirus restrictions.
Travellers were told that social distancing 'will not be possible' due to the volume of people on board, and those that felt 'uncomfortable' should not stay on the train.
Reacting to the announcement, Nigel Farage mockingly tweeted: 'Congratulations Prime Minister and your experts, you have caused the first evacuation of London since 1939.'

I told Nightwolf last week that if I had the money, time, and people; I'd record this song for this year's annual "Christmas songs for Charity" charts they do every year. I'd even see if any of the members of Matty Prior and Steel Eye Span wanted to be in on it - it is so TIMELY...Melodi

Command is giv'n, we must obey,

I'm beginning to think that Boris Johnson is one of "them". :shk:
A wolf in conservative clothing.
Lock downs are proven to make things worse. Is that what he wants???
I don't get the impression he's a "Wolf," Joseph P. Farrell went to school with him at Oxford and said, "He was just the same then as he is now."

This seems to me (my opinion) to be another slightly rakish Public School Boy (Private school very expensive), who has a certain charisma and charm (sort of), who really isn't nearly as bright or as clever as he thinks he is.

He is, however (or was) somewhat lively and entertaining, with a good sense for playing on people's feelings and emotions, especially when he was on a roll.

He knew there were huge anger and resentment in parts of England outside of London and the southeast against the EU and he used that quite skillfully to lead a BREXIT crusade (the best term I can think of).

But since he had COVID, he's been subdued, tired, puffy looking, hesitant, and made one bad decision after another; often taking draconian stands on things like "We will NOT shut the schools" (oops) or "Christmas is non-negotiable, we will have Christmas" only to have outside events (or pressure) force him to change course at the last minute.

Personally, while this has been denied, I think he has LONG COVID and really needed (and still needs) a very long period of rest and not to be a Head of State, he went back to work way too soon for someone that ill and he's just never gotten his "BoJo Mojo" back.

I suspect this is his WORST mistake yet and if BREXT also becomes as chaotic as it looks to be (no trade deal at all not even a normal one), he won't be a Head of State by March, if not long before.

London is in total chaos tonight, thousands of people have likely been infected in this panic especially if there is a new and more contagious mutation out there.

In other words, he managed to create exactly the situation he was trying to avoid.

The first rule of pandemics I mentioned here back in March is:

Expect people to either lock themselves in their homes and wait to die OR to drop tools and flee into the countryside spreading the disease everywhere.

If you read that full UK article, you can see it is already likely doing just that!

Tier 4 restrictions announced for London and swathes of southeast England
Travel chaos as trains and motorways loaded with people escaping London for Christmas
Many tickets from capital to Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Glasgow for evening of 19 December sold out

Travel chaos took hold on Saturday evening as people rushed to leave London before the introduction of tier 4 restrictions.
Traffic data showed jams increasing inside London and its surrounds, and train prices were surging with increased demand.

Additionally, train tickets were selling out quickly. By 7pm on Saturday evening, there were no trains available online from several London stations including Paddington, Kings Cross and Euston.
Footage taken at London's St Pancras station showed passengers streaming down the concourse to board trains heading north.

Travellers were told that social distancing "will not be possible" due to the volume of people on board, and those that felt "uncomfortable" should not stay on the train.

Harriet Clugston, a passenger, said that people on board the trains had attempted to secure space for themselves, but that there was not enough room to do so.
"As expected, train is crammed," she wrote on Twitter.

"Announcement on tannoy says social distancing 'will not be possible' due to volume and to get off if you are not comfortable with that.
"People have tried to secure social distance by placing [bags] on seats but being asked to remove them by other passengers as the train is so full."

One woman, who did not wish to be named, said she and her partner had made the “split decision” to take their young son to her parents' home on the coast.

“We just made the decision to leave based on the fact that my parents said come, and we couldn't bear the thought of no fresh air and a toddler going rogue round a small flat for the foreseeable,” she told the Press Association.
Anectdotal reports suggested motorways leaving London were packed with drivers heading out to beat the new restrictions.

Some people were driving to leave their newly-restrictive areas for a long stretch of time, while others were leaving to spend the last few hours without tier 4 anywhere.
Izzy, 22, from Bristol, said that she wanted "the security of being home for Christmas" and that her parents had come to collect her before the restrictions came into effect.
"I have a slight nervousness that they might block the roads or something stopping me going home," she told Press Association.

Boris Johnson announced on Saturday that all areas of east and southeast England – including London – that had been in tier 3 would go into the newly defined tier 4 from midnight.
Tier 4 effectively returns residents to the rules in place during the national lockdown.
Those in tiers 1, 2, and 3 are now only able to mix with other households for a Christmas celebration on 25 December instead of the longer stretch initially planned by the government.

Where the heck are they all going? Do they have "country places", relatives in the outlying areas, or are they headed for hotels and B&B type things? I know parts of the UK are under different levels, but yikes.

Guess I should equate the mentality of London with NYC-ites. Also the crazy cramped living conditions they are normally stuck in.

This is a normal historic response to this sort of sudden mandate - not that wise or thoughtful people do it - but the panics that result. Where do people think they are going "out of the area" is the answer, in this case fleeing North into parts of the United Kingdom that were not in such a severe lockdown yet (wait a few days) also France, Northern Ireland, anywhere and everywhere that was "away."

By waiting until 4 pm in the afternoon, canceling the most important holiday in the UK, telling people there were "no more bubbles" and they should "not leave their houses" for a month or two - or and by the way they had until midnight to get home- he helped create this mess.

Without even a full day to get ready, people just panicked.

Anyway, the horse is now out of the barn and other nations are now banning flights and travelers from the United Kingdom, Ireland may do so later this evening (except for Northern Ireland, as they are on the same Island).

A blast from the past, during another time of plague in London...

48-hour restriction on flights and ferries from Britain over new Covid-19 strain

Stephen Donnelly said everything needed to be done in order to protect the health service

Travel restrictions on flights and ferries arriving from Britain are set to come into effect from midnight tonight.

It follows concern over the new Covid-19 strain emerging in southern England.

The restrictions, which will be announced later this afternoon, will remain in place for an initial period of 48 hours, before being subject to review.

Officials are still meeting to finalise the details.

A discussion of the three coalition party leaders concluded earlier this afternoon.

Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have already banned passenger flights from Britain.

Earlier, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said everything needed to be done in order to protect the health service.

Speaking on RTÉ's This Week programme, Mr Donnelly said that Irish people who cannot come from the UK due to the new restrictions are in an awful situation.

Mr Donnelly said the vast majority of Irish people abroad had decided not to travel due to the virus, but a small number had planned to come home and he said his "heart went out to them".

He said the Government was taking the situation very seriously, as the new strain is up to 70% more transmissible.

Elsewhere, the Dutch government said it was making a decision to curtail travel from Britain after finding the first case of the new, more infectious coronavirus strain.

The ban, from 6am local time until 1 January, came hours after Britain announced a stay-at-home order for part of England to slow the new variant.

It is heartbreaking to see, and infuriating, at the same time.
Nightwolf is researching this "new" strain, he said the way that the UK Government is reacting is more what would medically be expected for a sudden outbreak of Small Pox or Ebola; so either they are just idiots (I don't doubt that is possible) or there is something else also going on here.

He's going to research the medical side and I'll be looking for hints on the political/BREXIT/trade breakdown side.

Nightwolf did saw that real medical protocols if there WERE an outbreak of something as serious as Ebola, Small Pox or a new fast-killer disease would be to NOT give people a few hours to get out of Dodge.

In those cases, the rule is to lock down EVERYTHING and FOR REAL, RIGHT NOW! He said if that were the case, the Prime Minister should have said, as gently and as firm as possible - you MUST get HOME NOW!!

Probably with the military already ready to shut off every major route out of the area, all the trains stop as they get to the station, etc.

That still creates some chaos for many people - they might have to run special buses to get the elderly home and NHS workers to the hospitals but most people go home and they stay there - no several hours to leave.

Otherwise what will happen is exactly what did happen last night, people will spend hours in crowded stations, trains, buses, boats, highways, etc all fleeing the city (just like they did in 1666) and take whatever the current plague is with them.

Northern Ireland is having an emergency meeting in about 4 hours (late at night at 9pm) to decide what they are going to do next.

I will update on the new strain as I get information from Nightwolf.

This one is supposed to have some gain of function. Not good. The vaccine may or may. Not work for it . Was about time for china to release another one.

"Gain of Function" as in the virology term of art? Or a natural mutation that adds bad 'features' to the bug?

Please combine these two threads, I don't mind you leaving the title for this one as it fits the current situation better but I just don't want to have to retype and repost the articles a second time - and this is important information and a breaking story.

From the Vaccine Thread (which I don't want to combine with this one, I deleted that it was an accident - I just wanted to combine the two UK threads) but this is important and tonight's update:
UPDATE FROM NIGHTWOLF (via Melodi - not an article)

OK, gang, this is the FIRST review of public medical information so it is too soon to make definite conclusions.

This could CHANGE very quickly.

As of now:

1. Yes there is a new strain floating around the UK, it may be more contagious or it may be simply that the tracking is getting better, but there has been an increase in cases that have this variant.

2. No one on planet Earth knows if the vaccine will protect against this strain - it may, in fact, he said there are some technical things about the mutation that may make it even more susceptible to the vaccine making it work BETTER.

However, NO ONE KNOW YET and anyone who says they do is LYING.

3. He said in his opinion (for now) based on the public information, the need for total and sudden lockdowns, barring of cross country or even localized international travel, etc. based on 6 hours notice to lock everything down is pure Bull Poop (only he used different words).

4. This creates two likely possibilities based on public information:

A. There is something much worse about this strain than is being publically admitted (totally possible but no way to tell when it isn't even in the medical literature yet).

B. BoJo (and his government) are using this as the perfect excuse to lock everything down as much as possible so when the no-trade deal BREXIT goes through and everything descends into total chaos (it is halfway there already) people will blame the Virus and Not the government.

Understand what I mean by "no-Deal" BREXIT at this point isn't about the UK staying in the EU, it won't be; it is about just getting a normal, every-day trade deal as the UK has with Canada or the EU has with the USA.

One that would allow food, medicine, and goods to keep flowing between the UK, the EU,and Ireland via the usual land and sea routes; perhaps with some tariffs but mostly with agreed-upon ways of keeping things moving.

At the moment trucks are already piled up for miles on both sides of the channel, with shortages of some supplies already happening (don't forget things like animal feed and farm equipment).

Finally - Nightwolf said this on his OWN as speculation, so it wasn't just me coming up with this option.

He said if this is the case, it might also explain why Europe and Ireland would go along with this because it also gives them an excuse to keep down the chaos on their sides of things and prevent a mass of duel-passport refugees (and there are a lot of them) flooding onto the continent all at once.

On the other hand, it may be that this new disease IS as bad as is being put out there, and the medical information just isn't there yet - but we are watching - like hawks!

This affects our family too....

Sounds like Mr Johnson is still suffering from long term Covid damage. A few brandy's should stiffen his upper lip.
