…… Tips on passing kidney stones, and\or preventing their reoccurrence?

I am usually a font of unsolicited advice, but know nothing about pallative or preventive care of kidney stones.

The unlucky patient self reports as having a not rosey disposition on a normal day, so having more to offer than drink lots of water and switch out to 100 proof as needed seems prudent.

So, what is our collective wit and wisdom on this issue? After, or in conjunction with medical care..

I've had a few. If you're a male, I recommend LOTS of water and frequent sex.

If you're a female, I recommend lots of water and frequent sex. (The sex doesn't really help the females pass a kidney stone but it at least improves the disposition.)

Unexpected wisdom, indeed. Think I will stick to just the water recommendations at this time, though, least my information be misconstrued.

Your vocabulary will be widened- I did not say improved upon. You can use those handy new words while watching the Democratic Primaries and all their hijinx.

Drink lots of water- and lots of Cranberry juice.

I have nothing at all to report on the frequent sex angle. Sorry.

Well, personally I would buy the SUGAR FREE cranberry juice or enough lemons to put at least half a juiced lemon in my water. Drink cranberry juice straight. Caveat: if you spill it it STAINS. You could also use apple cider vinegar. Idea is adding acid in. Brush your teeth often bc of the acid.

This probably wouldn’t work to dissolve existing stones (possible but not thinking it is very probable.) Should help keep new stuff from forming depending on their composition. This is just a WAG on my part and something I would personally try. No evidence either medically or anecdotal. Praise the good Lord for that. My hubby used to get kidney stones and it was horrible. Good luck!!!

Chanca Piedra - "Stone Breaker" in Spanish - is an herb I've seen recommended on various fora. No personal experience with kidney stones, just passing along something I've seen others talk about.

Chanca Piedra tea or tablets.

Possibly refrain from calcium, including milk products. Another anecdote was that the Atkins diet caused them.

my dh had them and he began a kidney stone protocol which aggressively included: fresh lemon juice and organic olive oil mixed and drank (just about equal 1:1 mix, sometimes it's a bit more juice), Chanca Piedra extract taken as directed...he used Herb Pharm brand), organic apple cider vinegar diluted at night is good also (just rinse mouth well with plain water afterwards), apple juice helps soften the stones, my personal favorite sites are earthclinic .com, naturalnews.com and YouTube vids. Just what I suggested is cheap, easy, and dh found highly effective....specially maintaining Chanca Piedra after stones are dissolved......….THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF STONE SO FIND OUT IF POSSIBLE WHAT YOU HAVE...…...

For us, lots of water, tea, or lemonade. The acidity can help. Cranberry capsules. Most likely an antibiotic of some type because the stones will scrape/scratch as they travel.
They hurt and not many painkillers are helpful. Cranberry helps sooth the irritation some though.

Have also heard very good things about chanca piedra. Works a South American Herb, and the word in Spanish means stonebreaker. Strongly recommend.

After the second bout of kidney stones Flomax is one of my every day meds now. Also helps with regards to prostate issues as I was told. Tamulosin is the generic form of Flomax; take it daily.
Here is a website on the drug Flomax/Tamulosin.

https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a698012.html

Cranberry juice helps, I chug the sugar free variety pretty regularly. My doc also recommended that if I get stabs of pain (stabs, like being bludgeoned to death. No kidding) send the missus out for a 12 pack of ice cold beer and drink it-all of it. Keeps the fluid levels in the body up and keeps the kidneys "active". (I've got a great doctor!) But I won't drink beer cold. Yuk. Saint Pauli Girl dark served warm is delicious however. He said warm beer works just as well.

If you haven't had kidney stones try your best NOT to get them. The pain levels passing a kidney stone on a scale of 1 to 10 average somewhere between 150,000 and infinity. I've been beaten, punched in the guts in more than a few past scrapes; none of it measures with the intensity of passing kidney stones.

Flomax. Get Flomax. It widens the pathway the stones take. The pain, as explained to me by my urologist, comes from piss that is backed up by the stones.

I had a stone about every 12 month over seven years. No fun. I started taking cheap over-the-counter magnesium suppliments, one a day for a year.
Most stones are calcium oxylate. Magnesium tends to replace calcium and magnesium compounds are more soluable. It especially helped with the small nuclei in the kidneys. The larger stones will have to pass but will tend not to get any larger. I have not had a kidney stone in over 25 years now. Perhaps my body chemistry changed but I do believe that the magnesium suppliments helped. They are cheap to try to see if it helps you.

My grandfather drank Cranberry juice every morning and for lunch. Cut out Milk and drank plenty of water. Worked for him.

A neighbor lady drank a beer every evening with supper and cut back on a whole list of things like milk, cheese, etc. Work for her.

A Urologist said that you can not drink enough cranberry juice to make a difference and says to buy the pills. A lot of people who have kidney stones will develop a urinary tract infection as well. It can lead to sepsis. I think having a sex partner while you have a kidney stone could infect the partner so be careful. Be careful drinking a lot of lemon juice as it will melt the enamel off your teeth.

My Doc told me I was a stone factory, I pass on a average 20 plus stones a year this year has been worse just this weekend I have passed one that was 14mm in length that's huge I was about to go to the ER with this one but with the help of Flowmax and plenty of beer it passed Lots of blood and pain. Normally a 6mm size stone is all the a normal person can pass.

I recommend ( Stone Breaker ) daily and real lemon juice 1 fluid oz to 16 oz water everyday when symptom's start.

I also have found that DoTerra brand essential oils work great for pain . The pure Lime oil when rubbed over the kidney area will stop the pain within seconds ..last about 2hrs and repeat as needed.
I no longer take pain meds I rely 100% on the oils.

Preventive measure's : I was told by my Doc to stay away from Green Veggies, soft drinks ,TEA #1 cause of my type stones . Drink milk the calcium molecules bind with the stone making elements and help it pass from the body, without the calcium those stone making elements will start to combine making a stone that will keep growing in size till it moves and finds away out. If they get too big surgery is a normal course of action Lithotripsy uses sound to break up the stones and you pass normally other procedures are more invasive.

Goodness! I had no idea so many folks suffered with these. Sorry! The phrase piss- miserable comes to mind!

Looks like many good tips, tricks, and wisdom borne from experience. Guess it's the first time I ve heard beer recommendation for health, lol.

Speaking of beer, AlfaMan, I cannot believe you are one of those types! Warm beer? Imma write that off your record as a temporary insanity response to the severe pain. Yeah. I know you're serious, but work with me here. Its not someting you want to get out

Anyway, thanks, everyone! I'm adding some stone breaker, and flomax to the DOOMAGEDDEN closet. Magnesium already has a spot, as does the rest of the wonderful items mentioned. Nice reminder too about risk of infection. Will have to refresh my memory if there's home diagnosis strips or not.

Just wanted to mention that this sounds similar to a program I tried for gall stones. Perhaps stones are stones? I do not know, but it jiggled my memory, and struck me as interesting.

the better half has had a couple, chanca piedra is a big help and lots of water. also ther eis a lemon juice drink that helps soften the stones and pass easier. takes a while but he said when he drank the juice and took the chancak he noticed a real difference and soon he could barely feel it unless he bent over a certain way. he passed one after a ferw months, he said he barely felt it, it did not hurt but he did feel it passing thru./
now he has another one and is slamming the juice and chanca.

personally from wathcing him he does not drink emough water dail;y, i think i read you should drink half your weight in water oz. if you weigh 200lb you need to drink at least 100oz a day. sounds like alot but if you have a 34oz water bottle and drimnk 3 a day, soon you miss it if you forget. clean water, no fluoride

kidney stone lemonade
1/2 cup lemon juice or lime juice or combine
7 cup water
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

drink all of this every day,
must pee 2 liter a day, keep urine pale
use honey or stevia to sweeten, no sugar.
he will add in home made electrolyte power we make

Thanks for the formula, Jazzy! I really suspect you're on to something re the amount of water etc...

I just happen to drink lemon water, and keep an eye on urine color\hydration out of habit. Bet it proves
to be the main culprit for the person in the OP, too.

He mentioned that sudden blissful cessation of pain, too. Perhaps he's aleady through the ordeal eh.
There's a happy thought!

My dad dealt with 64 kidney stones during his lifetime......after taking 250mg of Magnesium Oxide and 50mg of Vitamin B6 each day..he never had a another stone for the rest of his life. I believe he was being troubled by calcium based stones....magnesium is a regulator of calcium......just saying....not recommending .....he got his info to try it from Rodale Press's Prevention Magazine many, many years ago.

Some good suggestions above; I used some of those techniques. My blood test revealed abnormally high amounts of parathyroid hormone. Turned out one of my parathyroid glands was 4 times larger than normal. After surgical removal of the rogue gland my kidney stone problem disappeared over a few months.

Sorry but I made my warm beer statement and I'm stickin' to it. :) Yes, I AM one of those types. Try it, it's delicious!
Our ancestors drank beer rather than water because the water was so nasty. Don't think they had refrigerators for the stuff...............

Seriously though-do your best NOT to get kidney stones. And UTI's are prevalent with them sometimes. Don't recommend that either. UTI's turn a man into a wetsy betsy doll. Zero bladder control and lots of pain.

Glad to hear you found the right solution, and it's working well for you.

I'm beginning to think I might not wish these things on many of my worst enemies!

I will drink warm beer in England. Because...England. but I will stick to my opinion that warm beer taste like coffee that's been used as an ashtray, a urinal, and let set out a few days.

The idea of a "wetsy betsy" doll makes me almost happy to be flying solo! Although, love conquers all, probably up to, and including dribble dolls, stones, and severely compromised aim due to medical issues....but my lord, those eyes better twinklin & tease non stop iffin yer droppin' all that in my lap!

NO! Cranberry juice is great for UTI's, but not for kidney stones. It's high in oxalates, which combine with calcium to form the most common stones.
