Man commits suicide at Ground Zero

November 6, 2004, 7:11 PM EST

Distraught over the re-election of President George W. Bush, a Georgia man traveled to New York City, went to Ground Zero and killed himself with a shotgun blast, police said yesterday.

The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, 25, was discovered just before 8 a.m. yesterday when a worker for the Millennium Hotel looking at Ground Zero from an upper floor saw a man lying atop the concrete structure through which the 1 and 9 subway lines run.

The worker, thinking the man was sleeping, alerted colleagues and the Port Authority police were notified.

But when they got to Veal's body, they realized he had killed himself with a shot to the head from a .12-gauge shotgun.

No suicide note was found, but according to a Port Authority police source, family members said Veal, a registered Democrat, was despondent over Bush's defeat of Sen. John Kerry. A second source said Veal, who lived in Athens, Ga., and worked for the University of Georgia, was also adamantly opposed to the war in Iraq.

More than three years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Ground Zero remains a top tourist attraction, the site rife with symbolism.

Visitors there yesterday reacted in different ways to news of Veal's suicide. Bobbie Jensen, 54, a Republican from Phoenix, said that while she understood how Bush's victory disturbed those who dislike him, Ground Zero is not the place to act on those emotions.

"You can be upset about the war, about Bush, but this is a sacred place," she said. "You got to accept what happened and not kill yourself." But Frank Franca, an East Village artist and registered Democrat, suggested the suicide was symbolic.

"I'm very moved by it," he said. "Obviously, this person was devastated. I can see why he would come here."

Franca's friend, Jeffim Kuznetsov, a 25-year-old student from Russia who lives in Atlanta, said the suicide is evidence of how deeply many Americans were affected by Kerry's defeat.

"It's a national tragedy," he said. "This election is devastating to all who believe in democracy."

Another visitor to Ground Zero, Arushi Raval, 34, a businesswoman who lives in Chelsea, said Veal might have been active in campaigning for Kerry, only to taste defeat.

"Maybe he felt ineffective," she said of the victim. "You feel ineffective if you tried and it all failed.

"I know so many New Yorkers who are depressed over this."

This is beyond my belief, or maybe I'm just sick of the whining, but what this extremely unbalanced man did will haunt his loved ones forever and, somehow, those of us who voted for GWB will be tried and convicted in some society's eyes for this man's decision to end it all.

Perhaps I'm being heartless, but it seems the media are tryng to lay the blame for even fallen bakery buns on GWB voters.

For a man to commit suicide at Ground Zero (or anyplace at all) because Bush got elected is the sign of a very unbalanced mind. Sorry for the rant, but like I said, this is enough.

Let me see if I've got this right. You're angry at someone who was obviously in alot of emotional pain, because you don't want to be blamed? Wow. Good one.

Blamed for what? For voting for Bush? Sorry - I really don't feel any "blame" for this emotionally disturbed young man's suicide at all.

This story reeks of liberal emotionalism to the extreme. It's very sad to think that a young man would end his own life over an election. How devastating for his family. But the blame belongs soley to him and his misguided political beliefs.

Did the democratic party teach him this fear? Makes me wonder where he learned such cult reaction.

The Pulse......
Did the democratic party teach him this fear? Makes me wonder where he learned such cult reaction.
The fear is preached in the colleges and Universities, on the nightly news, in the favorite fringe coffee shops and hang outs, via email! Remember the sick email campaign that sent college students and their parents frightening emails claiming Bush was going to start the draft? :shk:

A cult is a cult. They all work the same way. They use peer pressure, buzz words, mantras, and most especially *fear* to break down their subjects and bring them in..Their subjects are rewarded for their belief and for their actions....they are made to feel as though they belong to some greater good. The cult isolates them from others who don't share that belief - even their families. They are made to believe that their parents and every other conservative leaning person in this country are ignorant and blind to some vast Bush conspiracy - Only they (the lefties) - and their cult know the truth.....

When their party loses the election and simply walks away - without offering any exit or closure to their cult members - a lot of them tweak. We are seeing this in the news everyday since the election. The media love to exploit it!

The Dems produced this cult mentality.....and it's a shame! :shk:

SUICIDE IS A SUGGESTION FROM SATAN

Biblical Prophecy, which is 100% accurate, states that in the last days the times would be 'PERILOUS.'
The Bible also tells that those who are in Christ will have:

-Power
-Love
-Sound Minds

-Christians will not succomb to the GLOBAL ONE-WORLD AGENDA -
and will be hated.

- If there's any reason GW is hated it is because within him
dwells the Holy Spirit. Everything he is doing to protect America from
further attacks is twisted and perverted by this Dem-Christ-Haters.
For those here over 50 years old:

Think back 25-years.

1.
Would you have ever thought that a pres-candidate would stand before the world and promise, if elected, he would make sure there would be plenty of murdered babies available, so we could use their stem-cells and body parts?

2
Did it seem even feasible that a person wanting to be elected the President
would claim God made the homosexual marriage? Kerry SAID this in debate 3!
I noted some other 'UNUSUAL' subtleties in the debates.

Bush: ' find the terrorists and bring them to justice'

Kerry: 'find the terrorists and kill them'

Every time Kerry said that, which was about 4 or 5 times, it stunned me.

MY THOUGHT OF THE OUTCOME OF AMERICA:

--It began with a GW for President, and will end with our present GW.

--President Bush will be raptured, and what was once the United States will
either become an extension of the EU, (the New Roman Empire) or it
will be Nuked to smithereens.

@---Jerusalem will become the Capital City of the World.
@---The UN General Secretary will be the Mayor of Jerusalem.

-The above has already been suggested by Perez in a meeting with the EU.

Photo: The 2 Great GW's.
God's Hand of Power, Love, and Soundness of Mind is upon him.

And God be with our troops who are willing to go into harms way even for these terrible ones who are first in line to gobble the fruits - and first to condemn those who make their blessings possible.

Yes. There is jumping to conclusions.

What is known is that "Veal" was unhappy about the election and he's dead.

Everything else is guesses and supposition. We don't know what else he "thought" was hammering at him. Did he break up with a girlfriend, did he fail a class at school, was his health failing, bills, job problems, on and on.

We also don't know what the NYC WTC site meant to him.

Unless there is a note or someone come forward and says, "Well, I was talking to Veal last week, and like, Veal told me....." it's pretty much a wild-assed guess.

Much like what they do when they drag the DB's for "terrorist" traveler clues.

I have experience teasing data out of mega databases and life doesn't work the way people think it does. The basic problem is that people are far more diverse and complex than Joe-clueless-analyst thinks they are.

It's humbling to look at live data and dig into real situations.

Wow, did anyone but me notice how badly the reporters stretched things?

A gauge is a measure based on the weight of the size of a lead ball that would fit through the bore of a shotgun. A 12 gauge ball fitting exactly through .875 shotgun would be exactly 1/12 of a pound of lead. 16 gauge is 1/16; 20 gauge is 1/20; 28 gauge is 1/28 of a pound.

By the reporters exacting reporting, a .12 gauge ball would weigh 8.33 pounds.

Heck of a bore size, and I'm not going to do the math to determine what it is either.

And this catfish killed himself with a shotGUN because he abhorred war that is fought with GUNS so much?

Nope, had nothing to do with GWB being president and more with him being stupid and mentally unbalanced; and the internationalist socialist press being scum :kk2:

Doesn't sound to me like he killed himself over the election of Bush. He lived in Georgia, right? So if you're going to go all the way to NYC to kill yourself, you're making a statement, right? So if you're making a statement, why no suicide note so you can become a martyr for the cause? Sounds fishy to me. And just how easy is it to travel round NYC with a shotgun? Sure, he could have driven up from Georgia with it in his car. Did he drive or fly, though? Just a few questions I have. Sounds like the reporter may have taken some liberties, or all the facts aren't in yet. I just ain't buying it.

excellent posts both!

the demoncrats can't see the truth because they have been blinded by the lies they have been told since kindergarden. no matter how we explain it to them, they will always turn away.

they want democracy but only if they win, otherwise, the election was a fraud, a sham, a trajedy. the more closely one looks at their cherished beliefs the more one concludes that they are entirely deluded with self-righteousness and self-pity. they "feel" for the poor, so they they demand that government take money away from others to help them. Americans are the most charity-minded people on earth, giving generously to a zillion charities here and across the world. but nothing ever satisfies a Liberal, except being in Power.

GROUND ZERO SUICIDE
By PHILIP MESSING, JOE McGURK and CYNTHIA R. FAGEN

November 7, 2004 -- A Georgia man despondent over the outcome of the presidential election climbed into the construc tion pit at Ground Zero and blew his brains out with a 12-gauge shotgun, authorities said yester day.

Police said Andrew Veal, 25, of Athens, Ga., had a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey at his side when he took his life sometime Friday night.

Although he did not leave a note, the sources said they had information that Presi dent Bush's re-election fueled Veal's desperate act.

Veal, who worked as a project coordinator in charge of conducting phone polls for political and non-profit surveys for the University of Georgia, went missing late Tuesday, Election Day.

"I don't know if he was pro-[John] Kerry, but I knew he was anti-Bush. I just didn't think he would take his frustration out in such a way," said a close co-worker, Stacey Sutherland, 20.

She said Veal, who worked part-time at a friend's Italian restaurant because he wanted to switch careers and become a chef, apparently did not tell his fiancée or his mother that he was headed to New York City.

"He was a wonderful person. He loved to clown around. He had a great sense of humor. This is a complete shock . . . because he used a gun. He was anti-violent and very opposed to the war in Iraq.

"I can't believe he would shoot himself. That was the hardest news to take, even though I can see it as a political statement," she said.

The lanky six-footer had pinned on the wall of his office a poster for the documentary "Control Room," about the Middle East TV news service al-Jazeera and its perspective on the Iraq war.

She said that the Univer sity of Georgia Survey Research Center where Veal worked had conducted a political phone poll a few weeks before the election and that "we were aware that President Bush was going to win Georgia."

Another co-worker, Lee Hall, said she, too, was shocked. "Besides, he had a wonderful fiancée, Audrey, and they were very much in love," Hall said.

Sutherland said that Veal's family began to worry because he was supposed to go to Seattle on Wednesday for a vacation with Audrey.

"Andy's mom was looking for him," she said. "He came to work on Tuesday and left, and that was the last time anyone heard from him," she said.

Police said Veal scaled an eight-foot fence by the No. 1 and 9 subway line entrance on Church Street.

Sources did not know how he was able to slip past a security booth and into the restricted area late Friday, when police said he apparently took his life.

Sources said Veal eased himself on top of a "concrete box" before shooting himself in the head.

His body, with the shotgun lying on his chest, was discovered by a Millenium Hilton hotel patron who spotted "a man sleeping" from a room window and notified hotel security.

Investigators were trying to determine how Veal obtained the shotgun, which cops said had not been reported stolen

Veal very probably got raging drunk after the election in Georgia, stayed drunk, ended up in New York and died drunk, God rest his soul.

His poor family.

The article claimed that Veal killed himself because he did not get an outcome that he wanted in the election. Thankfully he never got denied anything he wanted at work, because he may have chosen to harm others, instead of himself.

Do you mean someone's response here makes you think the poster believes that Veal's actions reflects on them in a bad way? Why would anyone think that?

What is distasteful is the family. I agree that Veal's actions over an election do tell a story about his general instability. So the family must be well aware of it, but instead decided to capitalize on their anger at the election results to use it as a scapegoat. ICK.

There was no note. Family members mentioned that he was depressed re both the election results and the Iraq war - so do we know which thing upset him more, or was that just the bias of the reporters claiming it was the election? That is what is despicable here - the family and the reporters using the kid's instability and death to make their own political point. ICK.

But the answer to that, of course, is to simply blame the Democrats, as so many in this thread are doing.

actually, i hope this catches on! self-immolation at Times Square, police suicide at Penn Central, leaping onto the floor from the high beams at MSG just as James Taylor begins to sing, suicide beltbomber takes out the Boathouse restaurant in Central Park . . . it's gonna be a great 4 years i tell ya! all this AND the impeachment of bush for war crimes. woohoo!

I was thinking it was the liberal Democrats fault.

He probably read all of the gnashing of teeth of places like Democratic Underground who claim the world is going to end and saw all of his rich liberal friends making arrangement to move to New Zealand and Canada.

Being a man of humble means he couldn't go with them and took the only steps he felt were available to him since his rich liberal friends abandonded him.

So bad to be abandonded by your friends. They are to blame and I hope they can sleep.

I've had a suicide in my immediate family and I will say, based on that experience, that many family members will go out of their way to look for people to blame, especially if they themselves are feeling somehow guilty or responsible for the suicide's problems.

I pray that when he fell, God caught him.

I am really confused here. I grew up in Indiana, just outside Indy. I grew up in one of the suburban counties. My high school was growing with suburban growth. It was basically all white kids (we had a few minorities, only one black girl that I remember). During my time in school (K-12), the are went from rural suburban and is now changing to suburban to urban----minus all the nasties from the big city.

That being said, I had only a few cases of any sort of 'agenda' in school. Most of my teachers were good people. Married with kids, most attended church I believe. They were all decent folks. Here are the 'agendas' I was 'brainwashed' with. This all happened in high school:
#1: 9th Grade government class. Our teacher was an asst. football coach. He was a right wing, pro-Republican to the core. He had Guns and Ammo _AND_ Soldier of Fortune magazines in his class room that the students were allowed to read. This was in '91-'92. He told us of how Clinton plans on banning ALL guns!!!

#2: This was in 9th or 10th grade--spanish class. This guy was a nice guy. He didn't get into much politics, but when kids asked...he admitted he supported Clinton and what the Dems stand for. Actually, this had to be in 9th grade for this to have happened. I do not remember him ever going into detail. I know he was the sponsor for left-leaning student groups (Enviro group, etc.). I was not doing well in this class (I was lazy, my fault), so he said that if I and another guy were to show up and help him with some class cleaing/decorating....he would give us some extra credit. We both showed up and got the class ready for some holiday coming up. He helped us with our Spanish a little and I remember that Bush was coming on with a press conference. He said, "Let's hear what the Pres has to say." He might have made a joke, but it wasn't that bad. He actually wanted to hear Bush out.

#3: 12th grade physics class. The teacher is a flip-flopper. Early in the year, we do a problem to find the speed of a bullet fired from a gun in MPH. He states "Guns are cool!" I was surprised at that, but he was a pretty good teacher. Then a few months later, he says that he saw a program on a news magazine about Canadian gun deaths and US deaths. He said they have more gun control and maybe we should look into it. Talk about a flip-flop!!!!

College:
I had only _one_ professor that I felt tried to force her leftist views on the class. She got very bad reviews as _everyone_ in the class did not agree with her also acting like Dems were the party in the right. I think she got fired that year. Anyways, I wanted an easy grade so I wrote a bunch of leftist crap on the test and got an A!!! (This was a sociology class called 'Social Problems')

I later found out that two other professors I have had are leftist. I know this from seeing political cartoons on their office doors. They _never_ brought up politics in the class room (Econ/Statistics). I acutally had more respect for them after that. Now that things are really split in this country, they might be trying to 'brainwash' everyone...who knows.

I also had a history professor who shot himself in the foot. We were reading "The Jungle", a book about poor work conditions. That went hand in hand with a discussion about unions, corporations, politics, etc.. He blurts out stuff about how the Republicans just don't care about the working class. He actually said "Regan was evil." Then he knew what he had said and his quick fix was something like "Well, well....I shouldn't say evil. Blah Blah Blah" The whole class was not like that and I had done well with my right leaning test answers so I don't think he let it affect his grading.

When it comes down to it...it was my right wing, gun owning high school government teacher that tried any 'brainwashing'!!!!!!!!! I remember how we would all sit around and bash Clinton in front of the other students (My friend and I were listeners of Rush Limbaugh). We also talked a lot about guns!!!

I always laugh when I hear of the radical left-wing liberal agenda in public schools....my school was a complete 180 from that!!!!
