SOFT NEWS The Happy Barn Cat Book is out!

It is published! The book originally inspired by 40 single-spaced pages of questions about barn cats and pets cats that I downloaded from my inbox on this forum is finally (15 years later) a published book!

My publisher sets the prices (this is not self-published) and because it is a full-color picture book I am aware the hard copy is a bit pricey and the Kindle download was more expensive than most because it is a larger file (and they charge the publisher for extra photos).

If anyone has a blog and wants to review the book- let me know and I may be able to get them a complimentary copy as there are a few out there for reviewers (just PM me).

Do to the pricing I recommend getting the hard copy book to have around for a reference if you can afford it (and it is a lovely book).

Summertime and others have made contributions and I hope to get a webpage going for future updates and questions.

This is an advert from my publisher but you can also buy the book directly from Amazon.

I am very excited this is the first book I've written mostly on my own, though my husband did the herbal chapter and more advanced medical stuff.

Sadly, I have neither cat nor barn, but this looks like it could be a winner. Always feels great to get a book out, doesn't it? Especially these days with Kindle being a thing and all.

Hope your publisher/publicist can get it into Tractor Supply here in the states, there are other farm store chains as well (Fleet Farm etc) but TS is the only one we have here. It is a good cover and looks as if it would help sell the book!

CONGRATULATIONS!

$30 really isn't a high price for a hardbound book these days. I definitely want one and will get it as soon as I can figure out how to do it without having a credit card.

I give up.
Very nice. I will order a copy when I have a few extra $$$$$$$, even though I've never had barn cats; only indoor/outdoor cats.

:)

Hi - just to avoid confusion, my publisher has one or two copies (I am not sure if they are hard copy or digital) if anyone HAS a blog and would like to review the book there, its kind of first come, most likely to get a copy situation.

The cover I am so happy about, that is Prince Mordred of Emmel Castle, born (for real) on Mayday morning in a real Irish castle we were renting, his poor tiny (probably stray) Mommy had milk for only one kitten (him) and we bottle fed the entire litter.

He went on to rule our barnyard (and get mentioned here occasionally sometimes with nicknames like "Iggy") for 15 years before spending his last year or so in comfortable retirement in a warm bathroom with one subject to rule over (a beta tomcat) with hand knit footies for his back paralyzed legs and a walk-in cat box.

I took that picture here at the house around 2008 when the Fall leaves were everywhere - it was so obviously "The Happy Barn Cat" (we called it Mordred Laughing).

My goal (so far) is to be lucky enough to make enough money to replace that camera (not cheap but not insane for a business purchase).

Some of the money for books sales (probably about 5 percent at the moment, we are working on this) will go to Cat Rescues like The Kitten Lady and I hope to do something to raise money at World Con in Dublin for the local SPCA branch.

By the way, the next book probably will be "The Happy Housecat" (nonfiction) so stay tuned!

There is a lot of general cat information in the book, I hope to do The Happy House Cat in the near future with more information on introducing new cats to home, play toys, litter box issue, catios, walking cats on leads etc; but there are a number of good housecat books out there but none I could find on Barn Cats so that was first.

But a huge amount of information crosses over.

The herbal section my husband wrote is for all domestic cats, not just barn cats.

Cheers and good fortune to this endeavor!!

Almost tempted to catch up my blog .. don't forget to partner
with your blogging communites in give aways of the book.

I forget the #s, off hand, but there is usually some sales generated via that buzz.

Thanks, Vessie, that link to the hard-copy book wasn't up there yesterday my publisher was working on getting it on Amazon last night.

Since you are an active member of the Barn Cat Group, can you post it for me? I almost did it this morning but I wasn't sure what the rules are for personal advertising etc.

And thank you to everyone else! The Forum inspired the project and my publisher has already asked us to start work in The Happy House cat, though we have a couple of extra projects to do first.

My husband will soon be publishing "Extreme Herbalism" which people on the forum may also want, it is officially a "guide for writers" and includes things like "how to medicate a Werewolf, Vampire etc" but because it is "advice for fantasy writers" he can also include a lot of REAL herbal remedies and emergency medicine for humans (if the TSHTF) that he couldn't publish otherwise as it would be "Real" medical advice as opposed to "you can have your hero treat a knife wound with" this or that.

His information on herbal cat treatments will be similar in both cat books the housecat book will just concentrate less on emergency outdoor situations when there is no vet (like how to do an amputation if you have to) and more on things like hairballs or litter tray avoidance (housecat problems).

Hi Melodi!

I just messaged Bodhi about your book and if it would be ok to post the info and links of your book on the Barn Cat's R Us group! So, I'll let you know what she says and she may message you directly.

I think that your book would be Hugely beneficial for the group members to keep on hand, especially new members who have just gotten barn cats for the first time! V

Thank you Vessie that is perfect, I hadn't really had time to follow the group much less as I had been too busy with the book itself and I didn't want to look like "hi, I'm here to sell you all a book" lol.

I will try to be a bit more active there, next week I start the serious edits on my fantasy novel and husband is well on the way with the herbalism book.

He's also got a huge book about three-quarters done on Saxon charms and amulets (it is more academic) and we hope our 14th-century historical fantasy novels (already published in Germany) will be out in English again soon.

Congratulations!! It's so fun to have your work finally in print, isn't it? I look forward to your husband's book as well.

And if you want a T-Shirt with Prince Mordred on it - here it is, this was a nice surprise!
This can be ordered from my publisher but I don't know the price on it, I asked them to make one for me to wear at World Con in Dulin and they put them on to sell as well.

Very cool Melodi! I hope you had someone correct all your typos....

:lkick:

Yes Dennis, my husband who can write "cleaner copy" than the editors and often corrects professional edits of his books, did all the editing and a good deal of the formatting.

He actually had to correct our publisher several times, though part of that was his preference for UK English over American - I let them sort that out lol.

Don't worry, I don't even blog anymore without at least using my fancy spell checker program which as we both know doesn't catch everything but still makes things a whole lot better than they would be otherwise.

Fantastic! You are luckier than me, I'm still waiting for my author's copy lol! Glad you like it, my publisher did most of the actual layout.

I gather they have now added coffee cups to the T-shirts, I may have to get one of those too.
