There are 7 movies this week.
I recommend watching or saving these sooner rather than later.

This thread on MAIN has the info about the movies and is the place for discussion about them.
However, all of the movie and download links are located in a separate,
members-only, thread in the MEDIA CENTER at this link:

----------->>> Link to the thread containing the actual movie links (click this) <<<-----------

This should help protect the source of the movies and keep them available longer.

If you watch or download a movie, please comment or like to guide future selections.
Click the "movies" tag at top to see a list of previous movie threads.

Movie trailers (from youtube) can be found in post #9 of this thread.
Click the "movies" tag at the top of this thread to see a list of all movies posted in the past.

Enjoy the Show!

The first movie is We Were Soldiers. This 2002 Vietnam war drama stars Mel Gibson, Madeleine Stowe, Greg Kinnar, and Sam Elliot.

In 1965, as America prepares to send its troops into South Vietnam's green Central Highlands, the devoted commander and seasoned paratrooper, Lieutenant Colonel Harold Moore, prepares to lead the young men of the First Battalion of the Seventh Air Cavalry into the war's first major ground battle. Hopelessly outnumbered--four hundred soldiers against a North Vietnamese infantry division of two thousand men--Moore's soldiers will fight in Ia Drang Valley, or the Valley of Death, during three days of inferno. We Were Soldiers displays the courage and the dignity of few men on the fierce battlefield, as well as the pain and suffering of all those who were left behind alive but, nonetheless, wounded.

The second movie is Joker. This 2019 crime drama stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Francis Conroy, and Brett Cullen. This is a very good, yet sad, film. It's well done and a personal favorite. It is R rated for a few scenes. It is the Joker and his descent...

- In Gotham City, mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck is disregarded and mistreated by society. He then embarks on a downward spiral of revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his alter-ego: the Joker.

Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks -- the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

The third movie is Gladiator. This 2000 adventure drama stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Neilson, and Oliver Reed. This is a movie about Romans, battles, and gladiators. It's gets bloody at times.

- A former Roman General sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery.

Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only desire that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge.

The fourth movie is Oblivion. This 2013 sci-fi adventure stars Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Zoe Bell, and Olga Kurylenko. This is a nice sci-fi movie.

In the distant future, Earth has been decimated by an intergalactic battle against an alien race known as the Scavs. The majority of mankind has been evacuated, leaving just a few solitary drone repairmen remaining on the planet's surface. Their job is simple -- stand guard over the ruins of a once-great empire by patrolling the skies, and ensuring the drones continue to function. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is nearing the end of his mission to extract resources essential to the survival of the human race when he witnesses a spacecraft fall from the sky. Upon investigating, Jack discovers the capsule contains a mysterious woman. With mission control watching his every move from high up above the clouds, Jack embarks on a spectacular adventure that will not only challenge everything he's been taught about mankind's most defining battle, but perhaps alter the entire course of human history as well..

The fifth movie is Seabiscuit. This 2003 horse-racing drama stars Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, and Chris Cooper.

- True story of the undersized Depression-era racehorse whose victories lifted not only the spirits of the team behind it but also those of their nation.

In an era when Americans were in great need of heroic figures to help them forget their troubles, SEABISCUIT comes to the rescue. The picture relates a moving story of friendship and devotion in rehabilitating the main characters 'fractured lives, as it interweaves the interactions between horse, jockey, trainer and owner and their adoring fans. The film accurately portrays the real people and events of those troubled times and how Seabiscuit "fixed us, every one of us."

The sixth movie is Secretariat. This 2010 horse-racing drama stars Diane Lane, John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh, and Margo Martindale.

- Penny Chenery Tweedy and colleagues guide her long-shot but precocious stallion to set, in 1973, the unbeaten record for winning the Triple Crown.

Housewife and mother Penny Chenery agrees to take over her ailing father's Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery -- with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin -- manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in twenty-five years.

The seventh movie is Sweet Home Alabama. This 2002 romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsy, Josh Lucas, and Candice Bergen.

- A young woman who's reinvented herself as a New York City socialite must return home to Alabama to obtain a divorce from her husband, after seven years of separation.

Melanie Carmichael, an up and rising fashion designer in New York, has gotten almost everything she wished for since she was little. She has a great career and the JFK-like fiancée of New York City. But when he proposes to her, she doesn't forget about her family back down South. More importantly, her husband back there, who refuses to divorce her ever since she sent divorce papers seven years ago. To set matters straight, she decides to go to the south quick and make him sign the papers. When things don't turn out the way she planned them, she realizes that what she had before in the south was far more perfect than the life she had in New York City.

"Enny you sumbitches calls me "Granpaw", I'll kill yeh." LOL!
Sgt Major Plumley - Sam Elliot.

Overall, a very intense and sobering movie. I know many Viet Nam veterans, and I appreciate them all the more. The scenes of the wives delivering the telegrams were especially poignant.

Secretariat is among my faves. Surprisingly, I have not yet seen Sea Biscuit. (similar genre.)

Out of a list of 7 movies this week, there has been 7 total reactions mainly for 2 movies. It seems that more popular, good movies are an increasingly bad choice to post. I'm assuming everyone already has those. I'm not sure what next week will bring, but it will be different.

Noooooooooooo don’t stop. This thread is the highlight of my week. I download for my winter off grid. I’ve tried to search for some titles and just don’t have the knack to find them like you do.

The Secretariat movie is one of my top ten movies. The finish of the Belmont in the movie made it look like Ron Turcotte could have finished the race, walked his horse back and ordered a beer before number two came past the finish. In reality, it was only about 3.5 seconds. Secretariat ran at about 49 mph and had a stride of either 25 or 28 feet (Penny Chenery claimed when his stride of 25 feet was measured, Secretariat was still accelerating).

By the way, Secretariat's heart was 2.5 times an average thoroughbred heart which accounted for his strength and ability to run short and long and Sham finished last with a cracked right cannon bone.

Thanks, 1911!! I get ideas each week for DVDs to purchase and limited movies to watch on our slow internet service. Keep them coming! I do agree with Dennis, though, that summer may not bring as many people watching due to other things. But with the other place to get the downloads, we can go back on icky days or when the weather gets cold and we're ready for cuddle up movie time. Thanks again!

Loves me some Oblivion!

Favorite quote:
Jack Harper: If we have souls, they’re made of the love we share. Undimmed by time, unbound by death.

I own a copy of The Lays of Ancient Rome. Little tiny leather bound tome.
