Sheesh, Erdogan isn't pulling any punches here. He is now headed towards Aleppo, WHICH IS CONTROLLED BY ASSAD'S ARMY AND THE HEZZBOLLAH SHIA MILITIAS UNDER THE CONTROL OF IRAN. Further, Erdogan has now thrown all of Northeastern Syria into total chaos by advancing south of Jarablus towards KURDISH MILITARY POSITIONS. Erdogan is also advancing towards Aleppo according to some reports.

Um, this will bring Erdgoan, his Turkish military and their Gray Wolves, ISIS types, Al Qaida types into direct combat with the Kurdish Peshmerga of the two separate Kurdish groups.

Putin will not allow Turkey to crush Assad. Putin will not allow Turkey to crush the Kurds either. My gut tells me that tens of thousands of the Kurdish Peshmerga, now in Iraq, are going to abandon the push on Mosul and pour over the Syrian/Iraqi border and FLANK TURKISH FORCES. It is only a matter of how much fecal material the Kurds are willing to eat from Turkey before they respond. When that happens, Turkey will have to start bombing inside of Iraq to deal with the Kurdish Peshmerga. And when Turkey does that, they will engaged Coalition Air Power, both US and Russia, over the skies of Northern Iraq and Northeastern Syria. How Russia stays out of that free for all I don't know. The USA which supports the Kurdish Peshmerga inside of Syria will face a stark choice of supporting them with airstrikes, or abandoning them to their fate under Turkish F-16's.

The USA has screwed the Kurds several times, but if they do it here, RUSSIA WILL PICK UP THE SLACK, AS WILL IRAN.

Geez, about the time I think Erdogan can't get any crazier, he goes off the scale again.

Yeah, Erdogan is going to make an armor/mechanized infantry thrust into sovereign Syrian territory with the goal of Aleppo while though the TAF can supply some CAS, they can't reliably supply a CAP/BARCAP for those same ground forces due to the purge of the force (never mind that they'll be within the firing envelope of the S-400s on the coast).

Turkish army thrusts deeper into Syria, 35 villagers killed

KARKAMIS- Turkey's army and its allies thrust deeper into Syria on Sunday, seizing territory controlled by Kurdish-aligned forces on the fifth day of a cross-border campaign that a monitoring group said had killed at least 35 villagers.

Turkish warplanes roared into northern Syria at daybreak and its artillery pounded what security sources said were sites held by Kurdish YPG militia, after the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported fierce overnight fighting around two villages.

Turkey's military said 25 Kurdish militants were killed in its air strikes. There was no immediate comment from the YPG, but forces aligned with the group have said it had withdrawn from the area prior to the assault.http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4847373,00.html

Clashes between Turkey, US-backed Kurds in Syria
'unacceptable' for US

29 August 2016
http://www.france24.com/en/20160829...s-backed-kurds-syria-unacceptable-us?ref=tw_i
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Clashes between Turkish forces and units
affiliated with a US-backed Kurdish-led alliance in Syria
are "unacceptable", the Pentagon said Monday, calling on all sides
to "stand down".

In a statement sent to AFP, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook
condemned the fighting south of the Syrian town of Jarabulus.

"We are closely monitoring reports of clashes south of Jarabulus
-- where ISIL (IS) is no longer located -- between the Turkish armed
forces, some opposition groups, and units that are affiliated with
the SDF (Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces)," he said.

"We want to make clear that we find these clashes unacceptable
and they are a source of deep concern."

"The United States was not involved in these activities, they were
not coordinated with US forces, and we do not support them," he added.

"This is an already crowded battle space. Accordingly, we are calling
on all armed actors to stand down immediately and take appropriate
measures to deconflict."

The comments come after Turkish forces began a two-pronged operation
against IS and Kurdish fighters from the People's Protection Units (YPG)
inside Syria on Wednesday.

The YPG is the main component of the US-backed Syrian Democratic
Forces alliance, which has been fighting IS in northern Syria.

Turkey considers the YPG a "terrorist" group and said Monday it would
continue to target the group if it failed to retreat east of the Euphrates
River.

Turkish forces backed by pro-Ankara rebels seized the town of Jarabulus
from IS on the first day of the operation, but have since then clashed
with local fighters affiliated with the SDF.

On Sunday, dozens of people were killed in Turkish bombardments
in Syria as Ankara ramped up its unprecedented offensive.

Ankara said it had killed 25 Kurdish "terrorists" and insisted the army
was doing everything possible to avoid civilian casualties.

But the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said
at least 40 civilians were killed in Turkish shelling and air strikes
on two areas held by pro-Kurdish forces, the first report of significant
civilian casualties in Turkey's operation.

Friendly Fire:
Intense Clashes on Turkey-Syria Border
Endanger US Forces

03:52 29.08.2016(updated 09:48 29.08.2016)
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160829/1044725388/turkey-airstrike-ypg-kurds-americans.html

Tensions rise following the first death of a Turkish soldier at the hands
of US-backed YPG Kurdish forces with whom American Special Forces
are often embedded.

The crisis in Syria has taken on another dimension with war being
waged on several fronts among mixed allies and enemies after Turkey
vowed to intervene more aggressively in the fight against Daesh (ISIS),
but have trained their weapons instead on US-backed Kurdish forces
out of domestic self-interest.

The United States now finds itself aligned not only with the Erdogan
regime, but also with Kurdish YPG forces considered by Ankara to be
a terrorist organization aligned with the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK),
the latter of which aim to carve out a separatist stronghold in Turkey.

President Obama’s delicate balance between the two opposing forces
who share the mission of defeating and degrading Daesh in Syria
appears to be collapsing following an intense offensive by Turkish forces
that have left at least 70 people killed, the majority of whom are
civilians according to local monitoring groups, in Kurdish dominated
areas.

The Turkish military, by contrast, claims that it killed at least 25 “terrorists,”
the majority of which are believed to be Kurds rather than Daesh jihadists,
claiming that they are taking all necessary measures to protect the
safety of noncombatants.

Regardless of whether the Erdogan regime struck civilian or military
installations, the Obama administration now finds its soldiers stuck
between the two sides – both of which are US allies.

American Special Forces remain embedded with YPG forces who earlier
this month helped to oust Daesh from the strategic enclave of Manbij
less than 20 miles from the outbreak of Saturday’s airstrikes.

Those same US Special Forces also work with their Turkish counterparts
who they rely on for rear supply lines according to Wall Street Journal
sources.

The Obama administration now faces yet another major crisis in Syria
with American Special Forces potentially in the crosshairs of Turkish
bombing campaigns as the Erdogan regime seeks revenge against YPG
Forces after the Kurds successfully struck a Turkish tank killing one
soldier.

The clash between Turkey and Kurdish forces is not the only mixed
allegiance that the United States finds itself locked in at present
as the Obama administration continues to provide arms and support
to the so-called "moderate" rebel opposition to the Assad regime
while engaging in bombing of al-Nusra Front (formerly al-Qaeda)
terrorists – the only catch is that the rebels and al-Nusra Front
have joined forces under the umbrella group The Army of Conquest.

With yet another major military force drawn into Syria to conduct
an operation focused on self-interest first and the fight against terrorism
second, the question is now whether that delicate balance can be
maintained or whether confusion over who each side is really fighting
will turn chaos into tragedy.

Russia, Syria and the Kurds need to start blowing Turk aircraft out of the sky. US should be warned that flyovers in Syrian airspace will make them targets.

As the Turks approach Aleppo, the likelihood of them directly engaging Iranian, Hezbollah and Russian troops along with the SAA goes up exponentially. They may think they're going to get a free pass hitting the Kurds (which they won't) but they definitely won't get that directly engaging those forces.

US Slams Turkish Bombing Of American Coalition Partners
As "Unacceptable And A Source Of Deep Concern"

by Tyler Durden
Aug 29, 2016 10:50 AM
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-...tion-partners-unacceptable-and-source-deep-co

Things are turning increasingly sour for the US, which is barely able to keep track
of which feuding factions it supports in the escalating Syrian war.

Recall that over the weekend we reported how
"Joe Biden Humiliated In Turkish "Appeasement" As Erdogan Bombs US Allies In Syria."
Concerned by Turkey's recent overtures toward Russia, which even hinted at military
cooperation between Moscow and Ankara, Biden arrived in Turkey last Wednesday,
just as Turkey sent tanks into northern Syria, with nothing but appeasement for the
Turkish president whose unprecedented crackdown on human rights has left over
100,000 Turks arrested, terminated, or otherwise "purged."

Meeting with Erdogan and Turkey's prime minister in Ankara, Biden delivered
a message of alliance and conciliation: "Let me say it for one last time:
The American people stand with you ... Barack Obama was one of
the first people you called. But I do apologize. I wish I could have been
here earlier,"
Biden said.

That is all Erdogan needed to hear as he then proceeded to launch a bombing
campaign not against Islamic State holdouts
in proximity to the Turkish border
- the stated reason for the Turkish incursion - but against his legacy foes,
the Kurdish militia, the YPG
, which problematically for the US, is part of
the broader U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) coalition
.

So, less than a week after Biden's attempt to appease Erdogan, earlier today
the United States, now finding itself in the paradoxical position of directly supporting
two warring factions, criticized clashes between Turkish forces and some
opposition groups in northern Syria as "unacceptable," calling on all armed
actors in the fighting to stand down and focus on battling ISIS
.

Cited by NBC, Brett McGurk, the special presidential envoy for the coalition
to counter ISIS, said on his official Twitter account that according to the DOD
"we want to make clear that we find these clashes — in areas where [ISIS]
is not located — unacceptable and a source of deep concern."

"We call on all armed actors to stand down... the U.S. is actively engaged
to facilitate such deconfliction and unity of focus on [ISIS], which remains
a lethal and common threat,"
he added.

At the start of Turkey's now almost week-long cross-border offensive, Turkish tanks,
artillery and warplanes provided Syrian rebel allies the firepower to capture swiftly
the Syrian frontier town of Jarablus from ISIS militants. Since then, Turkish forces
have mainly pushed into areas controlled by forces aligned to the Syrian Democratic
Forces (SDF), a coalition that encompasses the Kurdish YPG militia and which
has been backed byWashington to fight the jihadists.

NATO member Turkey justifies its attack on the US coalition member by claiming
that YPG is an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK),
which has waged a three-decade insurgency in Turkey's largely Kurdish
southeast.

As we previously reported, a group monitoring the tangled, five-year-old conflict
in Syria said 41 people were killed by Turkish air strikes as Turkish forces pushed
south on Sunday.
Turkey denied there were any civilian deaths, saying 25 Kurdish
militants were killed.

Turkish officials say their goal in Syria is to drive out ISIS but also to ensure
Kurdish militia fighters do not expand the territory they already control along
Turkey's border.

As a result of today's verbal condemnation by the US, we expect Erdogan
- who continues to hold all the Trump cards over Europe's future with some
2 million Syrian refugees housed within its borders, and which can be released
into Europe on a moment's notice - to unleash another verbal assault on the US
and its western allies, coupled with another Russian pivot threat, to show
the Obama administration who is and remains in charge of the latest escalation
in the 5 year old Syrian conflict.

Meanwhile, the US will find itself increasingly pressed by its "coalition partners"
who will demand justification why some allies remain more equal than other allies,
and just how the administration decides why and who gets preferential treatment.

Russian troops head to Aleppo City

Aleppo, Syria (10:10 P.M.) – Local activists in Aleppo City reported
on Monday that a convoy of Russian Marines were seen traveling
along the Al-Castillo Highway towards government-controlled parts
of the provincial capital.

According to these local reports, the total number of Russian Marines
that arrived in Aleppo today is estimated between 80-100 military
personnel.

If true, this news would follow the recent diplomatic developments
taking place between the U.S. and Russian governments regarding
the possibility of conducting joint airstrikes against the jihadists.

These reports could not be verified by Al-Masdar’s military sources

Um, Erdogan has stirred the pot very nicely. The fact he is now facing a three front war: in the north with Georgian Kurds, in the south with the Syrian Kurds and now from the east with the Iraqi Kurds.

IT IS ALSO A FATAL MISTAKE FOR ERDOGAN TO CONTINUE ADVANCING ON ALEPPO WHERE HE WILL NOW DIRECTLY ENGAGE SYRIAN MILITARY FORCES, HEZZBOLLAH/SHIA IRANIAN FORCES ALONG WITH RUSSIAN MARINES. The whole way to Aleppo he will be engaged with the ENTIRE KURDISH PESHMERGA IN SYRIA.

Oh yeah, Housecarl, the whole area is now going to explode. IT IS PATHETIC TO SEE THE OBAMA STATE DEPARTMENT, ALONG WITH BIDEN, GROVELING BEFORE THIS PSYCHO NUTCASE ERDOGAN.

The first Turkish shell that lands anywhere near Aleppo is going to have 100 Russian and Syrian jets shooting down anything between Aleppo and Turkey. The fact the main Turkish airbase was mortared is also a huge dot. I am still waiting for 100,000 Iraqi Kurds to pour over the border and start heading for Lake Van.

And remember that big Russian deployment of fighters to the airbase in Armenia: the one on the Turkish border with Armenia?

Heck, I'm waiting for the Syrians/Russians to make the point of who's "sovereign territory" it is by cranking up that S-400 battery at Latakia or ToT a Turkish line of march to Aleppo bottle neck with a couple of SCUDs.

Erdogan isn't even bothering to hide his moves anymore. Housecarl, Fars also has two stories about Syrian jets pounding the crap out of some al quaida or isis types outside of Aleppo. Yep, the USA is left whining about Turkey allowing ISIS troops over the border to attack the Kurds south of Jarbous. Sheesh.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Regional media outlets disclosed that over 3,000 fresh terrorists have entered Northern Syria via border with Turkey to take part in Jarabulus operation in Northern Aleppo.
"In addition to the dispatch of a large number of tanks, armored vehicles and their crew by Turkish army, over 3,000 ready-to-combat fighters have been dispatched to Northern Aleppo to join the Turkey-linked terrorist groups' operation in Jarabulus," the Arabic-language al-Hadath news reported.

"The terrorist groups have raised Turkish flag on their base at Turkey's border crossing and are using the base to collect and forward tens of vehicles and fresh forces to Jarabulus region," the news website added.

"The terrorists have entered Syria via the Turkish town of Qaqamshi," it disclosed.

Reports said earlier today that the Free Syrian Army (FSA), backed up by Turkish army troops, has engaged in an intense battle with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near the town of Jarabulus at the border with Turkey, sources said, adding that both side have suffered heavy death toll.

"The FSA and its affiliated groups, backed up by Turkish air force and artillery, have thus far captured the villages of Ein al-Beidha, Bolbolan, al-Amareneh, Sothern Da'es and Ba'ar Kousa after hours of fierce clashes with the SDF fighters," the sources said.

"Tough battle between FSA and SDF has been reported near al-Amareneh," the sources added.

"The villages of Thaljiyeh and al-Hadheibat in the Eastern side of al-Rai also were captured by the Turkey-backed FSA," the sources went on to say.

Syrian Air Force Smashes Terrorists Planning to Join Aleppo Battle against Gov't Forces

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian air force pounded the shelters and concentration points of the terrorists who had been ordered by their commanders to join others in the Southern parts of Aleppo, inflicting heavy losses on them.
"The Jeish al-Fatah terrorists had just arrived in Idlib from Darayya after reaching an agreement with the Syrian government to leave town in the Damascus countryside and were ordered to join other terrorists in the Southern Aleppo," a battlefield source told FNA on Monday.

The source noted that after receiving relevant intelligence tips, the Syrian fighter jets launched precision strikes on the shelters and gathering points of Jeish al-Fatah terrorists.

There is yet no report on the precise number of terrorists' casualties, but some sources announced that at least 20 terrorists were killed and tens of others were wounded in the Syrian airstrike.

The Jeish al-Fatah terrorists had been stationed in the Syrian army officers' housing complexes which are under the terrorists' control in Idlib now.

On Friday, the militant groups inside Darayya formally agreed to surrender the town after negotiating with a Syrian government delegation.

Under the terms of surrender, the Syrian government agreed to transport the remaining militants from Liwa Shohada al-Islam and civilians to their requested destinations.

Darayya’s civilians were transferred to the opposition-held Qudsiya District, which is located just West of Damascus City.

The government agreed to provide those civilians humanitarian aid and medical assistance, which was administrated by UN groups.

The militants were then transported by government buses to Jeish al-Fatah’s frontlines in Idlib province.

A long convoy of buses carrying terrorist groups' members and their families left the city of Darayya in Western Ghouta heading towards Idlib on Sunday.

Al-Mayadeen reported that terrorist groups' members in Darayya were totally around 1,000 out of which 700 militants called for evacuation from the town.

With the last convoy of terrorists' family members, who left Darayya, the total number of militants' families in Darayya did not surpass 2,000 disclosing that the claims that over 4,000 family members of terrorists were trapped in Darayya were shier lies.

On Monday, informed local sources disclosed that different terrorist groups in the Eastern part of the city of Aleppo have been demoralized as their comrades have left them alone to join the battle in Jarabalus along the border with Turkey.

"The al-Shamiyeh Front terrorists are very discontent with their commanders for dispatching a large number of their militants to Jarabalus at Turkey's request," the Arabic-language media quoted an unnamed local source as saying.

The source reiterated that the terrorists in Eastern Aleppo city have completely lost their morale because Jeish al-Fatah terrorists have failed to open a supply line for them through al-Ramousiyeh and refrained from sending aid to them via the Castillo Road which is under the Syrian army control.

Earlier on Monday, dissident media sources in Raqqa disclosed that the ISIL has acknowledged that it has lost a lot of its terrorists in Aleppo province, specially in Manbij and al-Rai regions.

"The Raqqa-based families of the ISIL terrorists killed in the battles over control of Manbij and al-Rai have been informed by the terrorist group that the ISIL could not retrieve their dead bodies from the battle zones," the Arabic-language media outlets quoted a dissident media source in Raqqa as saying.

The source noted that ISIL's move has been unprecedented because the ISIL usually buries the bodies of its dead militants at the presence of their families, and said, "But this time the ISIL announced that it could not bring back the dead bodies and that it is considering exchange of dead bodies with the rival militant groups."

Syria: Russian Air Force Smashes Jeish Al-Fatah Terrorists near Aleppo City

TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian fighter jets pounded Jeish al-Fatah's centers in the Southern and Southwestern parts of Aleppo city, inflicting major losses and casualties on the terrorists.
The Russian army aircraft bombed terrorists' concentration centers in al-Ramousiyeh, Tal al-Mahrouqat and al-Moshirfeh, leaving tens of the terrorists dead or wounded.

In the meantime, the Syrian government forces have gathered a large number of fresh forces in the towns of al-Hadher and Abteen to use them in a large-scale battle in the region.

Hundreds of army soldiers have left army's positions in al-Safireh to join their comrades in battlefields.

Reports said earlier today that Syrian army soldiers and their popular allies have launched large-scale offensives on Jeish al-Fatah's positions in military academy buildings from the Northern and Southern flanks.

"Syrian government forces have thus far cut off a road connecting Khan Touman and Eastern Idlib to al-Jabes in the Southwestern part of Aleppo," the sources said.

"The Syrian army struck Jeish al-Fatah's positions in military academy buildings from Um al-Qara'a in in the South and al-Ramousiyeh square in the North," the sources further added.

"Jeish al-Fatah has suffered a heavy death toll in the attacks," they went on to say.

U.S.-led coalition planes hit Islamic State in north Syria: Turkish military

U.S.-led coalition warplanes hit Islamic State targets near the Syrian frontier town of Jarablus overnight, the Turkish military said on Tuesday, as forces backed by Ankara pushed deeper into north Syria.

Two A-10 planes hit and destroyed two Islamic State targets, the military said in a statement, without elaborating.

Turkey-backed forces seized Jarablus from Islamic State militants last week. They have since pushed into areas held by Kurdish-aligned militias that are supported by Washington.

Differences over Syria policy have long complicated the relationship between NATO allies Turkey and the United States.

While Turkey is a member of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State, it is concerned about Washington's support for Syrian Kurdish fighters, which it sees as an extension of Kurdish militants who are waging an insurgency in Turkey.

The United States has scrambled to get its feuding allies, Turkey and the Kurdish YPG militia, to focus their firepower on Islamic State instead of each other after clashes that have threatened to unravel U.S. war strategy in Syria.

Turkish Offensive on Islamic State in Syria Caught U.S. Off Guard

Behind scenes, coordination between Washington and Ankara broke down at senior levels, according to officials

When Turkish ground forces delivered a lightning strike on Islamic State fighters in Syria last week, the Pentagon hailed what it described as close U.S.-Turkish coordination.

But behind the scenes, cooperation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners broke down at senior levels, according to officials on both sides. The two countries weren’t as aligned on the operation as their public statements indicated.

While the White House was preparing to consider a secret plan to have American special forces join the Turks, Ankara pulled the trigger on the mission unilaterally without giving officials in Washington advance warning. When clashes started between Turkish and Syrian Kurdish fighters—who are directly backed by U.S. Special Forces—the Pentagon issued unusually blunt calls for both to stand down.

U.S. officials say the Turks’ decision undercut a behind-the-scenes effort to clear rival Syrian Kurdish elements out of the conflict zone first and created a prickly, new challenge for the U.S. as two of its most important partners in the campaign fight each other instead of Islamic State. The breakdown in coordination adds a new layer of tensions between Washington and Ankara on top of those sparked by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s crackdown since the July coup attempt in Turkey.

Officials in Washington said they warned their Turkish military counterparts Monday that the U.S. won’t provide air support to Turkish forces pushing southward, deeper into Syrian territory. The U.S. will continue to provide air support to Turkish forces moving westward, into the border area threatened by Islamic State.

Likewise, U.S. officials told the Kurds that U.S. air support hinged on their forces moving east of the Euphrates River and on advancing south toward Islamic State’s self-declared capital, Raqqa, to ensure they wouldn’t come into conflict with the Turks, according to the officials. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Monday that the Kurdish forces had begun to move eastward, easing the friction between the two sides.

Turkey has long accused the main Syrian Kurdish militia of being an extension of the Kurdish separatist group that uses car bombs and suicide attacks in Turkey as part of a two-decade-old fight for more rights and autonomy.

A reconstruction of events leading up to Turkey’s ground intervention, based on interviews with U.S. and Turkish officials and Syrian rebels involved in the offensive, shows discussions between the U.S. and Turkey over a joint operation along the Turkish-Syrian border date back to the spring of 2015.

Under the original Turkish proposal, which Mr. Erdogan discussed with his top generals in June 2015, his government would have sent as many as 2,000 troops across the border. Turkish officials were so convinced of the political will to launch the operation that they had drafted news releases announcing the military decision.

In addition to Turkish forces, Ankara wanted the Obama administration to commit to sending in U.S. commandos, but the White House was cool to the idea, according to U.S. officials. Instead of using foreign ground forces, the U.S. and Turkey agreed to use air power and artillery to support thousands of Syrian rebel fighters who would move in to clear a 60-mile stretch of the border.

Turkey shared the names of the Sunni rebel units that it wanted to spearhead the ground operation, allowing U.S. intelligence agencies to vet them for any possible terrorist ties. One of the largest groups on Turkey’s wish list for the operation—Ahrar al-Sham—was rejected by the Americans as too extreme.

But talks between the U.S. and Turkey over the joint operation bogged down last summer as Pentagon leaders and some Turkish generals raised doubts that Ankara would be able to mobilize enough rebels to carry out the proposed mission.

The proposed operation was shelved as unfeasible when Russia intervened in Syria last year to shore up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, especially after a Turkish jet shot down a Russian warplane on the Turkey-Syria border. Many of the Turkish-backed rebel groups were too busy trying to fend off Mr. Assad’s resurgent forces in Aleppo to join Turkey on another front against Islamic State.

Talks renewed in the winter during a short-lived cease-fire. Then, in March, Turkey provided the U.S. with a list of 1,800 Syrian rebel fighters it had identified to lead the operation, a senior Turkish official said.

July’s attempted military coup against Mr. Erdogan ratcheted up tensions with the U.S. But top military officials on both sides said they didn’t want to let the discord affect cooperation against Islamic State.

After Mr. Erdogan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Aug. 9, Turkey sent a high-level military delegation to Russia to discuss its planned operation into Syria. The Russians assured Turkish officials that Moscow wouldn’t target Ankara’s forces if Turkey moved across the border, according to senior Turkish officials.

Turkey’s plans progressed after Aug. 13, when Kurdish-led forces backed by U.S. commandos seized control of the Syrian town of Manbij, which sat on Islamic State’s strategic supply route between Raqqa and the Turkish border.

That next week, alarm bells sounded in Ankara and Washington when some of those Kurdish units started to push north toward the Turkish border. Turkey had agreed to the U.S.-backed operation to liberate Manbij from Islamic State after receiving assurances from Washington that the Syrian Kurdish forces spearheading the fight would leave the largely Arab town once the jihadist group was defeated and move back to the east side of the Euphrates.

By Aug 17, Turkey was calling in Syrian rebel militias who were part of the battle plan, according to people familiar with the matter. Turkish security forces began transporting those friendly fighters to staging grounds along the Turkish border.

At the same time, Kurdish elements were taking more villages around Manbij, and not retreating as they had promised the U.S. Some Kurdish leaders also indicated that their next military objective would be Jarablus, a Syrian town on the Turkish border, instead of Raqqa. U.S. officials said the main Kurdish forces they backed never threatened to go to Jarablus.

By Aug. 20, Turkey had a new reason to launch its attack: A suspected Islamic State bomber targeted a wedding celebration in Gaziantep, a city of about two million near the Syrian border. At least 54 people were killed.

Turkish and American officials said the Turkish military wanted to look decisive and to show loyalty to Mr. Erdogan, particularly after the coup.

With their Syrian rebel allies massing, the Turkish military briefed their American counterparts based in Turkey on their plans.

They asked for a contingent of U.S. Special Operations forces to enter Jarablus alongside Turkish commandos, according to U.S. and Turkish officials. U.S. commandos would help call in airstrikes and coordinate with rebel fighters on the ground.

Pentagon leaders backed the plan, which called for deploying at least 40 U.S. commandos. Then, early last week, they began talks with the White House about the proposed joint ground operation.

The Pentagon was looking for a speedy answer. Instead, the White House—cautious about putting American troops on another front inside Syria—told the Pentagon that it wanted certain questions answered before proceeding. Specifically, the White House wanted to know how Special Operations forces would be protected given the presence of al Qaeda-linked fighters in the area, officials said.

Military officials said the White House’s request for more information amounted to a rejection of the plan because they knew the Turks wanted to move quickly.

As White House officials awaited answers to their questions, the Pentagon pressed Ankara to give U.S. deliberations more time. Meanwhile, U.S. officials were trying to get Kurdish forces to leave areas where Turkish forces would deploy.

Late on Aug. 23, the White House told the Pentagon that it was prepared to convene a high-level meeting the next day to consider the Pentagon’s proposal to insert U.S. Special Operations forces as part of the Turkish operation.

But overnight, Turkey launched its offensive without giving officials in Washington advanced warning. The proposal never reached President Barack Obama’s desk, according to a senior administration official.

While Turkey publicly cast the campaign as a joint operation with the U.S.-led military coalition, the first airstrikes carried out by Turkish jets on Jarablus were done unilaterally, not under the coalition umbrella.

Turkish aircraft fired from Turkish airspace, not Syria’s, according to U.S. officials.

When U.S. military commanders in the region realized that Turkish forces had launched their operation without the Americans, the head of the U.S. military’s Central Command, Gen. Joe Votel, used existing authorities to have U.S. forces in the region provide the Turks with limited air support via drones, F-16s and A-10s.

Instead of participating at the front line, U.S. Special Operations forces took up positions on Turkish soil overlooking Jarablus to try to help direct U.S. strikes from the sidelines. But officials said the commandos could do little from the distance.

The battle for Jarablus, which U.S. officials thought would take days or even weeks, was over within hours as Islamic State militants pulled back without putting up much of a fight.

Turkish officials seized on the quickness of their victory as evidence that the Americans were wrong to doubt their capabilities. “Obviously, the liberation of Jarablus by the Turkish military and the Free Syrian Army is proof that our troops were always up to the task,” a senior Turkish official said.

U.S. officials acknowledge that they misjudged Islamic State’s determination to hold that town. But they say they are more worried now about the danger that a NATO ally could get bogged down in Syria and inadvertently take pressure off Islamic State.

Ankara sends its troops deeper into Syria but the US issues a warning over Turkish - Kurdish violence

last updated: 30/08/2016

Ankara is sticking to its aim of pushing both ISIL militants and Kurdish fighters away from its border by sending its own forces deeper in to Syria.

Both Turkish troops and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) they are backing have already driven ISIL out of Jarablus.

The Turkish military carried out 61 artillery strikes on 20 targets around Jarablus in 24 hours, Turkey’s state news agency Anadolu reported on Monday.

Turkey has insisted Kurdish militia, which it regards as terrorists, retreat east across the Euphrates river.

critical

But the US is highly critical of the continuing offensive as the Turks are increasingly attacking Kurdish-aligned forces which Washington sees as an effective force against ISIL.

The US says attacks on Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) which includes Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) is unacceptable.

“We do not support, and we would oppose efforts, to move south and engage in activities against the Syrian Democratic Forces. Further action against the SDF would complicate efforts to have that united front against ISIL that we want,” said Washington spokesperson Ben Rhodes.

Turkish concerns

Turkish which is fighting its own Kurdish insurgency back home became increasingly concerned as Kurdish expansion in Syria increased after the SDF took control of the strategic Syrian city of Manbij from ISIL two weeks ago.

Turkish-backed troops now appear headed for Manbij which the SDF recently retook from ISIL. SDF fighters say they are reinforcing the town but that won’t include Kurdish YPG fighters.

Washington has urged Turkey to stay focused on ISIL and not engage the SDF. The issue is likely to feature in bilateral talks between Turkey and the US at next month’s G20 summit in China next month.

Hmm, the USA was caught flatfooted by the Turkish coup attempt in July. And now they are caught flat footed by the massive Turkish military INVASION of Syria so they can exterminated the Kurds in the 2016 version of the 1915 Armenian genocide.

My, my Housecarl, what does Kerry do when he isn't blowdrying his hair? Sheesh, I think the issue of whether the USA can last till January 20th is a valid one. I also think Obama has decided to do as much damage to the USA as he can before he is finally kicked out.

The Kurds are now totally fortifying that city. This time around the Turks are going up against combat veteran Kurdish Peshmerga, in fortified positions, and with about all the modern toys, bells and whistles you can get. MANPADS anybody?

Turkey has apparently decided to occupy most of Northwestern Syria and also Aleppo, where the Russians just deployed combat troops.

Well, eventually the Syrians, the Russians and Hezzbollah,Iran are going to start fighting the Turkish military directly. Now ain't that special, Housecarl? In a black humor, WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE KIND OF WAY!

It looks like my prediction about the Kurdish Peshmerga getting its paws on lots of anti-armor and MANPADS is proving to be correct. They also just blew up three Turkish tanks today. The decision to use them has now been made. I expect Turkey's "invasion of Syria" to get a lot tougher as they advance on the Kurds.

Terrorists Sell US-Made TOW Missiles to SDF

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and other Kurdish fighters are in possession of a large cache of the US anti-tank TOW missiles purchased from the terrorists stationed in Northern Aleppo and Northern Idlib, sources said on Wednesday.
Informed sources were quoted by Hadath News as saying that the al-Shamiyeh Front terrorists sold a large number of TOW missiles to the Kurdish forces in Northern Syria during 2014 and early 2015, adding that their arms deals were made in Afrin city.

According to the sources, the terrorists had received their weapons directly from the US.

It is surprising that the US, despite its claims of supporting the Kurds, has not armed them with the TOW missiles and has only supplied them with the French MILAN missiles or different types of Russian missiles bought from the Eastern Europe countries.

Online media linked to the ISIL terrorist group had in December released photos showing the use of US-made TOW anti-tank missiles, in another case of arms supplies meant for "moderate" rebels ending up in the hands of ISIL.

Social media accounts linked to ISIL released photos of the group's fighters using US-made TOW anti-tank missiles in Syria's Aleppo province at the time.

According to the release, the missiles were located North of Kuweires Airbase, which was liberated from ISIL by the Syrian Army late 2015. The ISIL-held area in that part of Syria is adjacent to the Turkish border.

The source of the US-made arms is unknown, although previous reports indicated links to both Turkey and US-backed rebels for arms procurement.

Kurdish Forces Target 3rd Tank of Turkish Army in Northern Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) destroyed another tank of the Turkish army in Northern Aleppo, increasing the number of Turkey’s damaged tanks in Syria to three.
The tank was destroyed by the SDF and YPG in the Western side of the border town of Jarabulus in Aleppo province in retaliation for the Turkish army's occupation of Syria’s lands.

Three Turkish soldiers were also wounded in the attacks.

Meantime, the ISIL terrorist group claimed earlier today that it has smashed two Turkish tanks in the Western parts of Jarabulus in Aleppo.

The ISIL claimed that it has targeted and destroyed two tanks with guided missiles after the Turkish military forces and their allies occupied Kaliya village in Western Jarabulus.

The Turkish army had declared on Tuesday night that one of its tanks was destroyed by a rocket, wounding three forces but didn’t reveal any information about the attackers.

Turkish military sources said on Tuesday that the Turkish military has not agreed to any ceasefire with Kurdish fighters in Northern Syria, , after a Kurdish official said a truce was holding.

Separately, the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement that Turkey's military operation in Syria would continue until all militant threats to Turkish security were removed, Reuters reported.

It said comments from the United States, which is seeking a de-escalation between Turkish-backed forces and Kurdish fighters, about the target of the Turkish action were unacceptable and Ankara expected a US pledge that Kurdish fighters would remain East of the Euphrates to be fulfilled.
