Wow. What a nice little pissing contest we've got going on here. Geeze, folks, does this help with ANYTHING?

"You're the dumba$$."

"No, YOU'RE the dumba$$!"

"Double Dumba$$ on you!"

C'mon. Where is this discussion to go? Does it help?

No where. :shk: Thanks for pointing that out.

This just too funny.

Some of us think the government is hiding numbers and making it less than it is.

Others think the government is embellishing the truth and making it sound worse than it is.

And everybody has numbers to back up their theory.

The less group criticizes the more group and the more group lashes back at the less group.

And none of us has a clue.

See....we do agree on some things.:spns:

There is a difference between respect and fear. Mother Nature is a well known B!t<h. Contagious disease is just one of the weapons in her arsenal. I respect things like the potential dangers of: flu, lightening, poison ivy, flat tires, hurricanes, snow storms and stinging insects and will go out of my way to avoid or prepare for them.

Nice post.
I particularly liked this:
10. Scientists, "experts", even "GENIUSES", in their particular narrow field of knowledge do not necessarily have any more or even as much circumspective awareness as your local grocer, bank teller, farmer or cop AS TO WHAT IMPACT THEIR WORK COULD OR MIGHT
HAVE ON OTHER PEOPLE, BUSINESSES, SOCIETY, GOVERNMENT, HEALTH, FREEDOM AND THE FUTURE WE HAND TO OUR CHILDREN.
Oppenheimer seriously regretted his contribution to the Atomic bomb, but only after the genie was let out of the bottle.

With all the media/government hype, and that Obama's DHS Janet Reno clone is taking the lead instead of the Surgeon General, I lean towards this being a lab rat stimuli/response experiment by the Social Engineers, exploiting what is, basically, a annual round of flu.

Not worried but suspicious the the globalist/dem/repub devils are up to their usual treachery.

I noticed today that the newfound congeniality of the board borne out of this "crisis" has already started deteriorating...

It doesn't have to deteriorate. But I would submit that it is a symptom of being bombarded by stressors from all directions. What fun. :shk:

Not the current rendition of H1N1 - it's the possibilities of the "next wave" come Sept/Oct. this year that's of concern.

Viruses - oh what did they say in Jurassic Park? - "Nature will find a way..."

The problem is just what kind of 'way' that nature finds that's troubling.

China Connection

TB Fanatic
You tough guys should come to China and work or Indonesia or other high population country here in Asia. What I got in Indonesia which was bacterial they gave me three days to live by the time I got back to Australia. Here in China during my first year I ended up in hospital twice with raging fivers. Once by the time friends got to me I couldn't get up to answer the doorbell. I was lying in bed shaking like a leaf. I couldn't stand without help and I had been teaching that same day. Wait to you get a good bug and feel what it is like. Here in China no money no treatment. No friends to help, you are in trouble too. Now a pandenic is something much worse that what I've been through.

No, thank you. Don't wanna' go! Well, I wouldn't mind visiting China, but wouldn't want to stay long enough to get a big, bad bug! Thanks for asking, though. :)

I was very concerned when I first heard of the flu and read the initial reports coming out of Mexico. Now, not so much. CDC has the count at 279 cases with one death as of 1100 5/4/09. Doesn't seem to be too virulent at all. I have topped off supplies and will try to keep well stocked just in case something changes.

No it does not scare me at all. I am more than tired of the hype and hysteria over this. I am protected and covered by The Blood of The Lamb, and Almighty God.

Plus I take reasonable precautions out in the world, and I have no doubt that I will be fine. It's pretty much a non-issue for me. Nope, I don't do pestilences.

When I lived in the Peoplez Republik of Kalifornia I was sick more times than I have ever been in my life. This is a state with a high population of foreigners and many Asian flu strains wondering around.

Do not underestimate the potential for outbreak and the ability of that outbreak to mess you up. It's so easy to be complacent and think that this thing is all hype until you actually get sick at which time you will regret your arrogance in more ways than one.

If you are directing your reply to me, Dex, I would tell you this - I am not being arrogant, only realistic.

I am worn out with the warnings about this flu. I am fully prepped, and will take precautions as I see fit.

That said, I will go about trying to enjoy my life. Believe me, I know only too well the shortness of life. Dear Quilter went Home two months ago today.

What Stormy said.

It has nothing to do with arrogance. It has to do with being tired of seeing an entire first page filled with idiocies such as "I coughed. Do I have swine flu?" Or: "Three people in local emergency room. Should I prepare to die?"

It's simply common sense vs. hysteria. I prefer to go the common sense route.

Just back today from the New Orleans Jazz Festival partying with 100,000 people for 4 day so no, I'm not scared.

I remember getting on planes after 9-11 and you would look around to see if any jihads were on the plane. Now every one looks around to see who is sick. Every time someone sneezes on the plane you can feel the tension ..

I'm worried about it mainly because my husband and I both have COPD and our youngest has an immune deficiency ... a common cold worries us.

One thing is that since our youngest had his tonsils and adnoids removed he fights off things much better and doesn't live in the hospital anymore.

If you, as you say, DO get it, perhaps you would enlighten the rest of us as to where it came from, what it is, and where it's going. Seeing a conspiracy at every turn doesn't mean you get it.

Worry on.....

BBDog, you directed the above comment at BertaBurtonLake. The fact is you don't realize who you are talking to there and she is not one to toot her own horn.
I am not saying she knows the answers to your specific questions you posed, but when she is cautious, there is a very very good reason. When BBLake talks, it pays to listen. She might know more than you think she does. ;)

As to the poll, I am trying to be balanced. Since the southern hemisphere is going into the winter months and the flu is over there, it bears watching. It might fizzle out but then again it might get stronger and nastier. I will not be stupid enough to predict it will absolutely be a non event before all is said and done. I hope to heck it does fizzle out.
If I get the flu, I think I might survive it. My Mom probably would not though as she has COPD, diabetes and is 73 years old.

And if enough people get it all at once, it could impact allot of services and supply of goods.
Old Gray Mare said to be respectful of things like this and I think respectful is the appropriate word.
I think Dex's opinion bears repeating as well:
Dex: Do not underestimate the potential for outbreak and the ability of that outbreak to mess you up. It's so easy to be complacent and think that this thing is all hype until you actually get sick at which time you will regret your arrogance in more ways than one.

Frighten me? Why? If the swine flu don't kill me, then it's the bird flu. If not that then West Nile, if not that then the Taliban gets control of the nukes in Pakistan, and we all end up extra crispy. If not that our gov shoves even more control down our throats and anyone who is not with it will be a terrorist. My immune system may be too weak for the virus, maybe too strong and turns on me. I could fall dead from a blood vessel popping in my brain. I could come down with cancer. I mean with all the bullets that fire about with my name on it, whatever. I like to keep up with what's going on, and to try to stay alive, but with all the hell that swarms around me, there is no need to be afraid, because there is too much to be afraid of. Might as well suck it up and mush on.

I think part of the reason the US has fared so well so far is due to the root of many of our other qualities: being spread out and mostly rural. We also are relatively antisocial, we have bigger 'personal space bubbles' than most cultures (though burkastan's keeping women in potato sacks may rival us). Likewise, despite popular opinions we do seem very obsessed with personal hygene as a whole, so again less likely to spread.

I'm waiting to see it loose in a tight population area like china. Or, perhaps even worse- toyko, japan; everyone in tokyo would have it by the end of the day. THEN I will decide whether to worry or not.

There is word that it mutates on the order of once every million bases or so, meaning it does mutate in every person slightly, but it seems that none of the mutations have been particularly meaningful so far. (no great changes in virulence to spread more than the original infecting strain)

I will say though,
It has potential.
