23-24 degrees forecast as lows for first of next week…..slightly north of central Illinois.

That’s a few weeks early for here.

Maybe that old farmers almanac gunna be right, for once….

Cold and snowy winter here we come.

Now where’s that face-palm emoticon ?

Whenever I find an oak leaf on the lawn, I remind myself to go looking for the tree. I want to make acorn flour.

Use the acorns from the rounded lobe leaves…..white oak family.
Bur oak is best….biggest acorns/least amount of tannin.

Hull them.
Split them.
Boil in 2-3 changes of water.

Dry well and grind as needed.

Mixed with whole wheat flour, or half and half with buckwheat and then whole wheat flour…..
A little real butter and maple syrup and you have the best pancakes the backwood homestead can muster.

Saw Tooth Oak is another good one for anyone interested.

And your right! Amazing pancakes that stick with you through lunch.

DW recalled that "they" are predicting a light winter here in the Southwest. Who knows? Haven't heard whether we're in a La Nina or El Nino year. That has a lot of effect in our area. Getting off and on small rain storms lately which is out of season for SoCal, but I'll take any rain we get as long as lightening isn't starting fires here on the mountain.

Fall has arrived in my neck of the woods. Temps have dropped to the 70s during the day and it is getting dark earlier. Leaves are dropping. It won't be winter until it rains and we get frost.

Day by day
We're supposed to be in the 30s Tuesday night/early morning. Crazy early for us, our cattle don't even have a winter coat yet.

The north wind has been blowing for a couple days. The high tomorrow is 33, tomorrow night down in the teens.
Yup. Same here. I think it's 20F out there right now and at dawn, of course, still dropping. So bloomin' windy the wild turkey flock won't even come out into the field this morning. Waiting for some sun I guess. They are very bright birds.

The mini horse mare has been getting furry for weeks now. But Bella, the little Quarter Horse *never* gets a winter coat... she stays slick and shiny, and I've had to blanket her here, because the barn is chilly... at home, with 50 cows in the barn, it at least stayed above freezing.

I rode her yesterday, and was shocked to see she's gotten *plush*! Certainly no long hair, but her coat is more like cut velvet. I've owned her for 8 years... this is the first time I've seen this. I hope it's a reaction to the first winter in the cold barn last year (is that possible?!) rather than the upcoming winter!
