Sen. Reid Beefs up “Base Bill” to
Destroy Gun Ownership

"Unholy alliances" could become a concern

We now know a lot more about what's going to happen with gun control legislation than we did a few days ago.

First, the number of the bill we are fighting is S. 649. Harry Reid introduced it on Thursday and brought it directly onto the Senate calendar. This means the bill can now come up at any time — probably soon after the Easter recess is over.

Second, the bill is a lot worse than even we anticipated.

We expected it to contain the Veterans Gun Ban, which would mean that you would sell, gift, or raffle a gun in America at the risk of a 15-year prison sentence because of something you didn't know about the veteran/buyer.
But, surprisingly to us, the Far Left has convinced Reid to include the original Schumer version of the Universal Registry Bill. This would ban private sales of firearms, unless purchasers first get the permission from the government. If Senators can pass this de facto registration bill, they will be well on the way to confiscation (see, for example, Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York, who has a gun owner registry and has called for gun confiscation). If this bill is passed, Senators will claim that they "broke the back" of gun owners in America.

Third, there is still every evidence that Reid will move to proceed to the bill under "regular order," which means he will need 60 votes to advance to the "gun control buffet."

GOA has been talking and making our case with a host of Senate Republicans, and we would hope that everyone in the Senate understands the importance of stopping the "motion to proceed" to Reid's gun control legislation.

Fourth, as we predicted, anti-gun zealots have begun to use the "ObamaCare Paradigm" to threaten, bribe, and coerce senators into submission on the most far-reaching aspects of gun control, including Feinstein's proposal to ban shotguns, rifles and handguns that millions of Americans legally own. So if the "motion to proceed" to S. 649 is adopted with 60 votes, then Feinstein's ban could be passed in the Senate with only 50 votes (plus Biden). Click here for a more technical explanation as to how this would occur.

Already, articles are being published to intimidate any Democratic Senator who votes against any gun control and threatening them with the prospect of facing an anti-gun primary challenger — just like we saw on ObamaCare.

Fifth, there may be unholy alliances at work which could succeed in achieving a dangerous gun control compromise. One Capitol Hill newspaper is now reporting that "Sen. Joe Manchin and the National Rifle Association are quietly engaged in private talks on a proposal to broaden background checks on purchasers of firearms." We hope this is not true, however you should be aware of this report and use whatever contacts you have to prevent this from happening. Be assured, you can rely on Gun Owners of America to never engage in any compromises!

ACTION: The strategy remains: We need to defeat this bill by filibustering and voting down the "motion to proceed" to S. 649. Please contact your senators and distribute this alert far and wide.

Click here to send your Senators a prewritten email.

Show up at their offices with a delegation during the congressional recess. Rally and conduct demonstrations and call-a-thons and writing campaigns. Know that the anti-gun Left will be doing the same.

But, but, but.....Reid was given an A rating by the wonderful, powerful and awesome NRA for his reelection. How could they be wrong?

Of course they only care about guns right, not politics. They were too STUPID to realize when you back a commie he's going to act like a commie.

So he thinks he can get three-fourths of the states government's to agree and ratify it? Also it started in the wrong house as only congress can start a bill for a constitutional amendment.

The name of Harry Reid's bill ( S. 649.) is called The Safe Community Safe School Act of 2013. Isn't that special? Making communities safe for criminals to pillage at leisure and schools undefended target rich environments for future whack jobs. IMHO it takes an entirely new level of stupid to believe criminals and the criminally insane are going to be deterred by gun control legislation.

They are NOT concerned about criminals and criminally insane. The ARE concerned about a heavily-armed, law-abiding, middle class .......

The NRA already said they were opposed to ANY new anti-gun legislation including any new background checks/universal registration bills. Please check your facts before flaming.

Federally Licensed Firearms Retailers Overwhelmingly Oppose "Universal" Background Checks

According to an online survey of federally licensed firearms retailers conducted this week by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, those retailers overwhelmingly oppose so-called "universal" background checks.

As noted an NSSF press release, when asked whether they supported or opposed "universal background checks," 85.7 percent of the responding firearms retailers said that they opposed them. To the question of whether they believed that such legislation would prevent criminals from obtaining firearms, a nearly unanimous 95.7 percent said no.

In addition, the retailers reported that that they feared these proposals would result in greater regulatory and record-keeping burdens, increased risk of license revocation for record-keeping errors related to private party sales of firearms, additional delays in processing of National Instant Criminal Background Check System requests, low government-set fees that will not cover their costs, and increased liability exposure from having to process private-party transactions.

The online survey of 640 federal licensed firearms retailers nationwide was conducted on Monday, March 18.

Please continue to contact your U.S. Senators and tell them to oppose "universal" background check legislation. To identify and contact your elected officials in Washington, D.C., use the "Write Your Reps" feature at www.NRAILA.org, or you can reach your member of Congress by phone at 202-224-3121.

The problem is that poll after poll shows that the public is overwhelmingly behind any bill that keeps guns out of the hands of madmen and other undesirables. I had been kind of wondering how the NRA was going to handle that. As has been posted here, O's first order of business is to gut out the political power of the NRA. This might be one way of doing it, put them in a position of opposing something that has overwhelming public support.

Well, THIS public doesn't support it ! (dh and myself and a whole lot of other people I know personally and this includes the leadership at the NRA)

I think Cox came out a week or two ago stating that they were NOT supporting of the Universal background checks bill. That it was a RUMOR going around. And I don't doubt that the gun grabbers started it to put indecision into the minds of the American public.

Like I said. The NRA is against this legislation and any other anti-gun bills. Period.

Almost all criminals get their guns via the black market, or steal them themselves. "Universal background checks" are worthless in keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. And even if a person fails the background check as a felon, how many of those get arrested and prosecuted? ZERO.

Psssst! Hint,hint, hint....

If we are made criminals, we can legitimately use that avenue also. Their 'Universal Background Checks' will quickly become 'No Background Checks'. Black Market full-auto just as illegal as a 2 banging derringer. I suspect the supply lines across the southern border are stocking up for a booming increase in customers....

Maybe the Russian Mafia can recoup some of their stolen monies in this enlarged black market....
